Childbirth Education Begins June 9th The birth of a baby is often considered one of the most exciting events a family will experience during their lives. It can also the most anxiety. SCKMC is now offering childbirth classes to help soon to be families achieve the most gratifying birth experience possible. Darci Hiten is a registered nurse at the medical center, and instructor of childbirth education. “Any question that you have that you are too embarrassed to ask your friends, you can come and ask me,” Hiten said. “We are going to talk about medical things like warning signs, as well as practical things such as tips and tools.” Prepared child birth classes are held at the medical center several times through out the year. The next session begins June 9th at 6:00 p.m.. Each session will consist of four twohour classes. You may register for classes individually or as a complete session. There is no charge for participants who plan to deliver at SCKMC. All others may enjoy the benefits of the class for a $10.00 per class fee. Classes cater to both new and experienced mothers. “It’s a great way for experienced moms to share what they did right and what they did wrong with some of our new moms. But they can also learn some new techniques. Technology is always changing, and every childbirth is different. So in a lot of ways it’s like the first time with each one,” Hiten said. But the childbirth classes aren’t just for moms, a significant portion of each class is targeted toward the support people. Birth is a family affair. This is something that everybody needs to be involved in. Dads come in a lot more apprehensive and uncomfortable than even mom. We talk about their fears of labor and what they can do to help mom and not be just a spectator, to be part of the birth experience,” Hiten said. During the session, participants will receive pre-admission services and tours of the family birthing center and the equipment used during delivery. Register by calling the SCKMC OB Department at (620) 441-5940 or e-mail darcih@sckrmc.org. “We have a lot of fun and I really enjoy doing it. Don’t be intimidated, it’s very laid back and you’ll be glad you came,” Hiten said. • June 9th - Final Stretch: Staying healthy and pregnant for 40 weeks, warning signs, and how to prepare for birth. • June 16th - Pain Management Techniques: Medications, epidurals, and non-medical techniques for managing labor. • June 23rd - Breastfeeding: Benefits of breastfeeding, skin to skin time, step by step instructions, and tips for success. • June 30th - Going Home: Newborn care, safety, and taking care of yourself after delivery.

Healthy Living: with Dr. Perry Lin Prenatal Care – Prenatal care is an integral part of providing a safe experience, delivering a healthy baby at the end of nine months, and ensuring the mother comes through with her health intact. A number of medical issues, conditions, and potential emergencies can occur even in perfectly healthy, low-risk women. This is why prenatal care is strongly recommended for all women. The recommendation is that, with the onset of pregnancy, a visit should be made with an obstetrician or a family doctor who does obstetrics as soon as feasible. The physician can make sure the pregnancy is normal and anticipate any potential problems. This allows time to prepare for problems or minimize the risk of their occurrence.
