Registration Begins for Landrush
Church Group Freshens Up Grounds
Last August the medical center hosted their first major fundraising event, the SCKMC Landrush. The twelve-obstacle, 5K race had 135 participants and raised over $9,000 in its inaugural year. Now hospital staff are preparing for the 2016 fundraiser obstacle race. “This year should be even bigger and better,” said Clayton Pappan, SCKMC’s Chief Operations Officer and chairperson for the race’s planning committee. “We wrapped up last year with a debriefing meeting to really break down what went well and where we could improve. That is exactly where the committee picked back up this year, taking those ideas and running with them, literally.” Scheduled for August 27th, the Landrush will have a new course layout for participants, and an expanded vendor area for spectators. However the biggest change is the addition of a 2K kids fun run for ages 8 – 14. “The minimum age for last year’s run was something the committee debated a lot. We eventually agreed not to allow children to participate, mainly because we didn’t know ourselves just how challenging the obstacles would be. But then we noticed after the event several kids running the course, playing in the mud, and just having a great time,” Pappan said. The fun run is an untimed event that will take place on a shortened track. The course will have six obstacles, each selected with the safety of the children in mind. Another change is the addition of corporate teams. Businesses who would like to pay for their employees registration fees will be provided with a unique code for their team members to enter on the race registration website. Use of the code waives all upfront fees for the runner and allows for the business to be invoiced for their team. “Many employers have health programs for their staff, and obviously health is at the core of our mission for this event. We were approached about the possibility of corporate teams and group invoicing, it made sense so we made it happen,” Pappan said. Businesses interested in a corporate team should contact Pappan at South Central Kansas Medical Center, 620-4422500. Individuals who would like to participate in either the adult 5K or kids 2K fun run can find out more information and register online at www.sckmc.org. An early registration discount applies to all entries before July 30th.
Pastor Mark Boxman, along with 14 volunteers from Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, spent several hours working in the hospital main entries as well as flower beds visible from patient rooms. “We had a wonderful evening. We hope things look good for the whole summer,” Pastor Boxman said. Supplies for the project were donated by the following businesses, groups, and individuals: Tyler Brown, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Boxman Lawn Service, Mark & Lynn Boxman, and Westlake Ace Hardware.
June Employee of the Month Congratulations Sarah Gillette, Registered Nurse with the Medical Surgical Unit, for being named the SCKMC Exceptional Service Award winner for June. Sarah was nominated by a patient for taking the time to answer questions and providing great care. Sarah (pictured right) was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Department Manager Tracy Austin and will also have a special parking spot reserved for her throughout the month.
The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. Getting enough vitamin B12 is important. It is needed for your blood cells, nerves, and brain. If you are deficient, you may have fewer red blood cells, feel weak, feel sad, or unable to think well. It can be found in foods such as meat, fish, and dairy products. Many people get enough B12 through their diet, however you can supplement it with a monthly shot or by taking an OTC vitamin. Look for "USP Verified" on OTC vitamin products. These have been tested for good quality.
