Keep Safe Over Labor Day

2017 Landrush Winners Announced

Many people will savor the final days of summer by visiting the beach having a cookout over the long weekend. But do you know how to ensure a safe visit? Labor Day is the #1 holiday for the greatest number of injuries and trips to the ER, especially for children. The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips for an enjoyable holiday weekend: Tips for Safe Travel Labor Day is one of the highest traffic weekends of the year and one of the deadliest ones as well—the National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that there will be nearly 400 trafficrelated fatalities, with 42,300 people seeking medical care for accidents. • Take emergency supplies such as food and water, a flashlight and a first aid kit. • Let someone know your destination, your route and when you expect to arrive. • Buckle up and obey traffic signs. NSC estimates that 144 lives may be saved this weekend because people wore their seatbelts. • Avoid texting and talking on the phone while driving. • Don’t drink and drive. If you do drink, make arrangements for a designated driver or a taxi. Tips for Safe Grilling • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. • Keep children and pets away from the grill. • Never add charcoal starter fluid after coals have been ignited. • Use long-handled utensils. • Don’t leave the grill unattended while in use. Tips for Safe Swimming • Check weather and water conditions beforehand and throughout the day. • Always swim with a buddy in a designated swimming area supervised by a lifeguard. • Provide constant supervision to children in or near the water and always stay within arm’s reach of young children and inexperienced swimmers while they are in the water. • Young children and inexperienced swimmers should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. Questions about chewable tabs are sometimes asked. Chewable tabs can be swallowed whole in most cases. The stomach acid will usually dissolve the tabs if not chewed. There are always exceptions, some chewable tabs must be chewed prior to swallowing and check with your pharmacist if you have doubts. Chewable tabs usually don't work faster or slower than regular tabs. It still has to dissolve and be absorbed by the gut. Some pharmacies may allow automatic substitution of chewable tabs to regular tabs depending on state laws and the pharmacy's policies.
