ER to Sponsor “Lifesaver of the Month”
Annual Mammogram Special Begins
Medical providers at SCKMC have recently launched a new program designed to honor staff who assist with the care of the facilities most critical patients. Providers with Integrity Healthcare Professionals (IHP) announced the recognition program earlier this week. IHP is partnered with the medical center to provide emergency room coverage at the facility. “Integrity Health is proud and honored to announce the initiation of our Lifesaver of the Month Award at SCKMC. This distinction is set forth to recognize those individuals at SCKMC whom have had a "lifesaving impact" in the recent care of our patients,” announced Dr. Joseph O’Donnell, Director of Quality & Co-Founder Integrity Healthcare Professionals. While the Integrity Providers concentrate on caring for emergency patients, the award program is open to all medical center staff. “This extraordinary individual may contribute from anywhere within the line of care of the patient, and from any department. Our hope is to fully appreciate and aptly recognize this person's special contribution to our culture of premier healthcare delivery at SCKMC,” Dr. O’Donnell said. The monthly recipient will have their picture posted within the facility, along with a brief synopsis of the exceptional measures taken to assure the best for the patient. In addition, the Lifesaver will receive a personalized coffee mug denoting the award, and a "family night out" package providing movie tickets, a dinner card, and a cash gift. IHP began seeing ER patients through the medical center in January of 2016. They provide coverage using a combination of physicians and mid-level providers working directly with the SCKMC staff. “We remain confident that the care rendered at our facility cannot be matched. Among many options, our staff has chosen to dedicate their lives to bringing only the best back home. Integrity Health is excited to join SCKMC in deservedly recognizing this heartfelt decision,” Dr. O’Donnell said.
A report from the American Cancer Society finds that about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. In 2017 alone, an estimated 252,710 women will be diagnosed and an estimated 40,610 will die with invasive breast cancer. At the medical center, specially trained technologists and doctors continue to work to diagnose and treat breast changes that may be cancer. Some of the services that provide an increased likelihood of early cancer detection include digital mammography and same day surgical biopsies. To increase awareness of this disease within the local community, SCKMC will give each woman receiving a mammogram screening during the month of October a certificate for a free mammogram screening to donate to someone in need. For more information about this offer, or to schedule an appointment contact the SCKMC radiology department at 441-5770.
Community Wide Baby Shower Scheduled The fifth annual Community Wide Baby Shower, hosted by the Breastfeeding Advocates of Cowley County, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7th. The free event will be held at the Winfield Early Learning Center, 400 E. 9th in Winfield, from 9 a.m. - Noon. The “baby shower” features educational displays, presentations and fun door prizes appropriate for expecting and existing families of young children.
Veterans Hold Flag Ceremony SCKMC was honored to receive a gift of a POW-MIA flag on behalf of VFW Post 1254. The flag was presented during a special ceremony for National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The ceremony included a speech from Post Commander Charlie Cravens, as well as the official flag raising. “As one of the highlights of our community service activities program, it is a great pleasure for us to be able to present to you this symbol of our distressed and missing comrades,” Cravens said. The National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag symbolizes the nation’s remembrance of those who were imprisoned while serving in conflicts and those who remain missing.
The Pharm Forum with Homer Mah, D.Ph. The flu season is fast approaching and in some areas has already arrived. Vaccinate now if possible and don't be to concerned about waning immunity towards the end of the season. For seniors who choose to receive a high dose vaccination, it may help prevent one more case for every 200 patients but may cause more fever, aches, and local reactions. It is OK to receive other vaccinations at the same time, just make sure a different arm is used or the vaccinations are least one inch apart. SCKMC staff vaccinations will be available starting Monday, October 2nd.
