Chester Music
Instrumentation Soprano solo Chorus (SSAATTBB) 2 Violins Viola Violoncello Doublebass
Duration: c. 10 minutes The score is in C. Orchestral parts are available on hire from the publisher.
Commissioned by The Crossing and Donald Nally, conductor, with major support from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. The first performance took place on 24 June 2016 at the Episcopal Cathedral, Philadelphia, PA, U.S.A. with The Crossing and International Contemporary Ensemble.
Notation Abbreviations cbc con bocca chiusa b.pr. bow pressure l.b.pr. light bow pressure for an airy effect m.b.pr. much bow pressure for a distorted effect s.p. sul ponticello m.s.p. molto sul ponticello c.l. col legno salt. saltando ord. takes back all special effects/performing techniques applied, including (but not limited to) sul pont., light bow pressure, much bow pressure etc. w with
General Accidentals apply to one measure at a time.
Former effect/sound/technique/indication gradually becomes the following one.
All glissandos should be played/sung throughout the duration of the note value it is written by. For example, w , slow glissando that at the beginning of the note and glissandos throughout the four beats of the note value. Similar with i , faster glissando (depending on the destination of the following pitch). h
A small notehead above the stave indicates the note’s duration (applied for quarter note and a half note with stems only).
When pitches are sustained/slurred through an extended period of time, breathe/bow as necessary, not synchronised.
B I ¾ á
Quarter tone flat Quarter tone flat above b Quarter tone sharp Quarter tone sharp above #
Voices In mm. 53-55 & 59-61 the words are sung between vocal groups. The part of the word that should be annunciated is written in normal text and the remainder of the word is shown in brackets in smaller letters, as shown on the left.
Strings Indicated with various performance techniques such as col legno, col legno saltando, much bow pressure etc. Place left hand (not only one finger) lightly on indicated string, around given pitch area, not on harmonic. Fingers are not to be placed on exact pitches. This produces an un-pitched airy sound. The lower small note head indicates the open string to be performed on, the upper note head indicates the approximate position of the hand. When the note head is indicated with a glissando, move hand up or down the string as indicated (this will produce various harmonic colors to the airy sound as hand glissandos over the string/s), for example: Dynamics for note heads on air are relative to the sound so that a lighter dynamic indicates slower bow strokes and a higher dynamic indicates faster bow strokes, but does not indicate more bow pressure. A mp e.g. is a subtle airy sound (and sounds less in volume than p played on a pitch).
Text by Guðrún Eva Mínervudóttir
I fall to my knees I fall I fall I fall to my knees and ask forgiveness for lazy thoughts, unseemly hunger and the beautiful, wild stampede of my fear I fall to my knees I fall I fall I fall to my knees and into the dark haze of the purple, innocent sky I fall deep into the sky and beg for clarity, true satisfaction and union of the soul I give myself up I give I give up
I fall to my knees I fall I fall I fall to my knees and worship the eternal music
