Tenor, 2 soli:

I. Jalapeño Blues II. ¡Chicanofóbia! III. A Poem About Brandon Dever IV. Why Do Men Wear Earrings on One Ear? Jalapeño Blues (2007) for mixed a cappella chorus, written for the Chanticleer vocal ensemble and commissioned by St. Paul Sunday, draws on the words of renowned Chicano poet, Trinidad Sánchez, Jr. (1943-2006). “Trino” was the ninth of ten children and spent twenty-seven years as a Jesuit brother. After he left the order, he dedicated his life to prison ministry and human rights issues, especially those pertaining to the Latino and Latin American people. A hero in the Chicano community, Trino was also beloved as a poet who addressed topics such as social justice, sexuality, spicy food, and la familia.

As a composer, I first became familiar with Trino’s poetry when I discovered one of his most well-known poems, Why Am I So Brown?, in a children’s anthology. I loved Trino’s message to young Latina girls to take pride in their culture and set the poem for children’s choir with Trino’s blessing. In the course of many emails, I grew to consider Trino as one of my friends, and looked forward to setting more of his poems to song. That opportunity came when in March of 2005, Trino sent me the preliminary manuscript of his forthcoming volume of poems entitled Jalapeño Blues. I was at once taken with the lyricism, passion, and immediacy of his words. Honored to be allowed a preview of the new publication, I asked Trino if I could adapt his poetry for a large multi-movement choral work. After a good amount of work on my part, the ensuing result is a musical text that carefully splices together those poems that address similar topics, repeating words to create recurring strophic verses, all the while hopefully preserving the rhythm and spirit that is so uniquely Trino’s. During the course of this, a wonderful landscaper I was acquainted with since childhood passed away much too early. Married to a co-worker of my father’s, Edward Carl Rentner had always struck me as a gentle person with a wry sense of humor. He was also an outstanding singer, performing professionally in local choral groups. Before I even began composing music to Trino’s poems, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my new choral work to Ed. Tragically, in 2006, Trino himself passed away. I received the news while in Perú and, needless to say, this was also a great shock. I revisited several of his poems, reworking them into a new form. I hope that the resulting songs do his vision justice and that I honor both Ed and Trino’s memory. They will be missed. – Gabriela Lena Frank

I had never written a poem about Brandon Dever who drew pictures of crying clowns who were tired for his 80-year-old grandmother, his only local relative. She always seemed exhausted at the end of each day and would fall asleep saying her prayers. She had never taken him to the circus to see real clowns and did not know if he wanted to be one. She loved his smile. She loved his drawings of his clowns. They made her smile.

Performance Note Jalapeño Blues (2007) for mixed a cappella chorus is in Spanglish, a unique mix of Spanish and English brought organically to life in the everyday vernacular speech of Latinos in the United States. Hence, all words that are italicized are to be given a Spanish pronunciation. All other words are to be pronounced as American English. The first movement, I. Jalapeño Blues, features a prominent tenor solo that could be done by a solo alto, if so desired. In addition, a special effect is in use — The “tsk” sound which is indicated by an upside-down triangle. This is NOT a tongue-click, but rather the same sound that is used when one is scolding another person. These “tsk” sounds always occur at the same time as “nn” is vocalized as a pulsated rhythm. Also in the first movement, Spanish scat is used. A minimum of vibrato could be employed here as well as a slightly nasal quality to give a “brassy” sound. In all movements, when soloists finish singing, they are to rejoin the ensemble.

Maybe it looks much better than the nose... the toes?” “Maybe they lost the other one.” “Maybe to distinguish them from those who don’t...” “... and those who won’t.” “Maybe as a reminder de algo que no querían olvidar... like the last time they had sex.” “Or to be sexy-looking?” “Maybe they are sexually confused.” ”Maybe they are gay caballeros!” “Maybe to separate them from the women.” SECTION 2 (SOPRANOS AND ALTOS): “Maybe because as some women say: Men can only do things half right!” “Maybe to be imitators of the superior sex — halfway.” “Maybe to keep the women guessing and the men on their toes.” “Maybe they are undecided.”

To spoken section:

Phrases are to be assigned to individual singers, and should be spoken with wit and as if in dialogue. Section 1 features phrases to be spoken by the Tenors and Basses. Section 2 features phrases to be spoken by the Sopranos and Altos. Section 3 continues phrases spoken by Sopranos and Altos while Tenors and Basses begin to sing again. SECTION 1 (TENORS AND BASSES): “Why do men wear earrings on one ear?” “Who knows...

58 something is cooking. Because one earring’s cheaper. Because the moon is full. Because they are egocentric cabrones

SECTION 3 (SOP./ALTOS SPEAK WHILE TEN./BASSES SING): “Maybe to be cute.” “Maybe because life is short.”

[punks]

y buscan la atención!

“Maybe they are Republicans trying to be progressively liberal.”

[and they’re looking for attention?]

“Maybe they are Democrats disguising their conservatism.”

Maybe to distinguish themselves from los machos. ‘Cuz they’re undecided. Maybe to be cute. Maybe to tell you they are free and innovative, liberated, and avant-garde!

“Or leftists telling you they are in the right party.” “Or revolutionaries looking for a peace!” ALL SHOUTING ON CONDUCTOR’S CUE: “PEACE!” PROCEED IMMEDIATELY TO M. 136.

Maybe it depends on which coast you’re on, maybe to remind others which ear is deaf. Because one earring’s cheaper. Because the moon is full. Because they are egocentric cabrones y buscan la atención! Why do men wear earrings on one ear? Who knows… Maybe it looks much better than the nose… the toes? Maybe they lost the other one. Maybe to distinguish them from those who don’t… … and those who won’t. Maybe as a reminder de algo que no querían olvidar…

Maybe to keep the women guessing and the men on their toes. Maybe they are undecided. Maybe to be cute. Maybe because life is short. Maybe they are Republicans trying to be progressively liberal. Maybe they are Democrats disguising their conservatism. Or leftists telling you they are in the right party. Or revolutionaries looking for a peace! PEACE! Maybe por costumbre, maybe porque es la moda, or they made promesas, maybe for some vieja, because the chica selling them was so mamacita and they could not refuse! Maybe they’re looking for somebody good at cooking. Maybe it makes them look like that something is cooking. Because one earring’s cheaper. Because the moon is full. Because they are egocentric cabrones y buscan la atención! Why do men wear earrings on one ear? ¡Sepa yo!

[of something they don’t want to forget]

Repeat as often as necessary while maintaining a gradual crescendo. Upon conductor's cue, jump to shouting “Peace!” Proceed immediately to m. 136.

like the last time they had sex. Or to be sexy-looking? Maybe they are sexually confused. Maybe they are gay caballeros [gentlemen]

Maybe to separate them from the women. Maybe because as some women say: Men can only do things half right! Maybe to be imitators of the superior sex – halfway.

I had never written a poem about Brandon Dever who at 10PM called his grandmother He didn’t want her to worry. He would be out in three years. Time would go by fast. Told her he loved her. He would take care of her. Told her thanks… At 11PM in his cell, Brandon Dever hanged himself.
