John Joubert THEY ARE HAPPY for SATB choir and organ
NOVELLO 27
Duration: c. 4 minutes
They are happy, whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his own. From the heavens the Lord looks forth, he sees all the children of men. From the place where he dwells he gazes on all the dwellers on the earth; he who shapes the hearts of them all; and considers all their deeds. Our soul is waiting for the Lord. In him do our hearts find joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, as we place all our hope in you. (from the Athanasian Grail Psalter Psalm 33:12-15; 20-22)

Paweł Łukaszewski CANTATE DOMINO for SATB choir unaccompanied
Chester Music 37
Commissioned by Brady Allred and Salt Lake Vocal Artists, USA.
Cantate Domino canticum novum, cantate Domino, omnis terra.
Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.
Cantate Domino, benedicite nomini eius, annuntiate de die in diem salutare eius.
Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.
Annuntiate inter gentes gloriam eius, in omnibus populis mirabilia eius. (...)
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous deeds among all peoples. (...)
Laetentur caeli, et exsultet terra, sonet mare et plenitudo eius;
Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
gaudebunt campi et omnia, quae in eis sunt. Tunc exsultabunt omnia ligna silvarum
Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.
a facie Domini, quia venit, quoniam venit iudicare terram. Iudicabit orbem terrae in iustitia, et populos in veritate sua.
Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness. (Psalm 95(96): 1-3, 11-13)

John McCabe THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD for unison upper voices and organ
NOVELLO 53
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me. … Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. … I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Nico Muhly THE BEATITUDES for SATB choir and organ
Chester Music 59
The Beatitudes is taken from the four-movement work Our Present Charter, commissioned the Choir of the Temple Church, Mother-Church of the Common Law, to Celebrate the 800th Anniversary of the Sealing of Magna Carta on 15 June 1215.
Duration: c. 4 minutes
Text Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the mercyful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peace makers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Matthew 5:3 King James Version)

Nico Muhly IN GREAT NUMBERS for SATB choir unaccompanied
Chester Music 77
Commissioned by Wigmore Hall, with the support of AndrÊ Hoffmann, president of the Fondation Hoffmann, a Swiss grant-making foundation. Premiered on 14 October 2016 at Wigmore Hall, London, by The Cardinall’s Musick, conducted by Andrew Carwood.
Text I am like a man sitting under a great tree, who sees wild beasts and snakes coming against him in great numbers. When he cannot withstand them any longer, he runs to climb the tree and is saved. It is just the same with me; I sit in my cell and I am aware of evil thoughts coming against me, and when I have no more strength against them, I take refuge in God by prayer and I am saved from the enemy. (Abba John the Dwarf)
It was also said of him that on Saturday evenings, preparing for the glory of Sunday, he would turn his back on the sun and stretch out his hands in prayer towards the heavens, till once again the sun shone on his face. Then he would sit down. (Abba Arsenius) from Writings of the Desert Fathers (Apophthegmata Patrum) translated by Benedicta Ward (1975)
Duration: c. 4 minutes 30 seconds

Sergei Rachmaninoff MAGNIFICAT & NUNC DIMITTIS (from the All-Night Vigil)
for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 97
The language used in the Russian Orthodox Church – and thus set by Rachmaninoff in his All-Night Vigil – is not modern Russian but Church-Slavonic. The languages have much in common, but Church-Slavonic is pronounced more literally than modern Russian. For example, the letter Ô/o is always pronounced as such, whether in stressed or unstressed position, whereas in Russian it is essential to know whether the letter is stressed or unstressed since the sounds will be different. Words and word-endings such as Ì Ô or -Ô Ô are pronounced yego or -ogo, and not as in the modern language yevo or -ovo. The modern letter Æ/yo is not used, so that for example ˒ˑˈˏ is pronounced poyem, not poyom as in modern Russian.

[surely] [pushchair] hard sign: prevents softening [bicker] soft sign: softens the preceding consonant [early] [yule] [yard]
Notes The vowels: Ì/ye, Ï/i, ã/yu and Ç/ya ‘contaminate’, that is soften, the consonant they follow; the effect on the letter b in the English word ‘abuse’ gives some idea. The soft sign á/’ has a similar effect. After the consonants Í/zh and Ý/sh, the letter Ï (normally rendered i) is pronounced ï. After the consonants Í/zh, Û/ts, and Ý/sh, the letter Ì (normally rendered ye) is pronounced è. In the method outlined here, the Roman symbol y never denotes a separate sound (as in, e.g. ‘likely’); it always precedes a vowel and should be treated lightly, subordinate to the vowel. Some consonants change character as a result of their position in a word and these changes are implemented in the transliteration. Examples include: Ê×Ì: literally vsye, pronounced fsye; -ÕÔËá (in eÔ×ÕÔËá): literally -pod’, pronounced –pot’.
Transliteration and translation The transliteration is a phonetic transcription into Roman characters of those portions of the Church Slavonic text set by Rachmaninoff in his All-Night Vigil. The words are here divided up on the principle used in singing, ie that every syllable ends on either a vowel or a voiced consonant -l, -m, -n, -r or -y. Stressed syllables are shown in bold type. Experience has shown that repeated preliminary reading aloud of a text presented syllabically before the music is introduced is a valuable learning aid for singers to whom this language is new. The division into syllables here is not necessarily identical with that in the score, which largely follows that in the score as first published. The transliteration should be used in conjunction with the recording of the text, possibly with the advice of a coach skilled in the pronunciation of Church Slavonic used in singing.
98
A recording of the text is available on-line and may be downloaded at www.hybridpublications.com, code RW006. The transliteration (sound) and translation (meaning) are presented below in a manner designed to keep them as close together as possible: no text can be sung intelligently if its subject is not understood.

For he hath looked upon the meekness of his handmaiden; for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Refrain. For He that is mighty hath done great things unto me, and holy is His name; and His mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation. Refrain. He hath wrought might with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the thoughts of their heart. Refrain. He hath put down the mighty from their throne, and hath exalted the humble; He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He hath sent away empty. Refrain. Judith Weir HOLY INNOCENTS for 2-part soprano chorus and organ
Chester Music 131
Commissioned through the generosity of the St Albans Ex-Choristers Association to mark the 20th Anniversary of St Albans Abbey Girls Choir. First performance given by the choir at Evensong on 25th June 2016, conducted by Tom Winpenny.
Duration c. 3½ minutes Score on sale: Order No. CH84788
HOLY INNOCENTS text by Christina Rossetti (1830-94) Sleep, little Baby, sleep; The holy Angels love thee, And guard thy bed, and keep A blessed watch above thee. No spirit can come near Nor evil beast to harm thee: Sleep, Sweet, devoid of fear Where nothing need alarm thee. The Love which doth not sleep, The eternal Arms surround thee: The Shepherd of the sheep In perfect love hath found thee. Sleep through the holy night, Christ-kept from snare and sorrow, Until thou wake to light And love and warmth to-morrow.

Leaf from leaf Christ knows; Himself the Lily and the Rose:
Drop by drop, He counts The flood of ocean as it mounts:
Sheep from sheep Christ tells; Himself the Shepherd, no one else:
Grain by grain, His hand Numbers the innumerable sand.
Star and star He names, Himself outblazing all their flames:
Lord, I lift to Thee In peace what is and what shall be:
Dove by dove, He calls To set each on the golden walls:
Lord, in peace I trust To Thee all spirits and all dust.

This introit was the winning entry for the Friends of Cathedral Music Diamond Jubilee Composition Competition, and was premiered by the Choir of Southwark Cathedral, directed by Peter Wright, on 25th June 2016. Busy choral conductor Janet Wheeler is increasingly in demand as a composer, with many choral commissions and a growing audience through performances and radio broadcasts. She read music at Cambridge, studying composition with Robin Holloway, before an early career in secondary education and then as a music producer for BBC School Radio.
We sing to Him, whose wisdom form’d the ear, Our songs, let Him who gave us voices, hear; We joy in God, who is the Spring of mirth, Who loves the harmony of Heav’n and Earth; Our humble sonnets shall that praise rehearse, Who is the music of the Universe. And whilst we sing, we consecrate our art, And offer up with ev’ry tongue a heart. Nathaniel Ingelo (1621-83)

Paweł Łukaszewski LIKE AS THE WAVES for SATB choir unaccompanied
Chester Music 177
Sonnet LX Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, So do our minutes hasten to their end; Each changing place with that which goes before, In sequent toil all forwards do contend. Nativity, once in the main of light, Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crown'd, Crooked eclipses 'gainst his glory fight, And Time, that gave, doth now his gift confound. Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth, And delves the parallels in beauty's brow, Feeds on the rarities of nature's truth, And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow. And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand, Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand. William Shakespeare

Paweł Łukaszewski WEARY WITH TOIL, I HASTE ME TO MY BED for SSATBB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 189
Duration: c. 4 minutes
Sonnet XXVII Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed, The dear repose for limbs with travel tired; But then begins a journey in my head To work my mind, when body's work's expired. For then my thoughts, from far where I abide, Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee, And keep my drooping eyelids open wide, Looking on darkness which the blind do see. Save that my soul's imaginary sight Presents thy shadow to my sightless view, Which like a jewel hung in ghastly night, Makes black night beauteous, and her old face new: Lo, thus, by day my limbs, by night my mind, For thee, and for myself, no quiet find. William Shakespeare

Julian Marshall HOW SWEET I ROAMED for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 199
How sweet I roamed from field to field, And tasted all the summer's pride, 'Till I the prince of love beheld, Who in the sunny beams did glide! He showed me lilies for my hair, And blushing roses for my brow; He led me through his gardens fair, Where all his golden pleasures grow. With sweet May dews my wings were wet, And Phoebus fired my vocal rage; He caught me in his silken net, And shut me in his golden cage. He loves to sit and hear me sing, Then, laughing, sports and plays with me; Then stretches out my golden wing, And mocks my loss of liberty. from Poetical Sketches (1783) Mercy, pity, peace Is the world's release. from ‘I Heard an Angel’, Rossetti MS

Peter Maxwell Davies A TORRENT OF GOLD for SSA chorus and piano
Chester Music 229
Commissioned by Hurstpierpoint College as part of their celebrations of 20 years of coeducation. First performance on 15th January 2016 at Hurstpierpoint College, Sussex by the Chamber Choir of Hurstpierpoint College with Kate Bray (piano), directed by Neil Matthews. Duration c. 2 minutes Score on sale Order No. CH84634
KINGS AND SHEPHERDS
‘Here’s the place’, said the kings And the black one set on the sill a rose. ‘At last, at last’, said the kings And the yellow one played, inside, his flute. ‘Open the box’, said the kings And the red one poured a torrent of gold. Then a troop of shepherds came. The shepherd boy was cold as a root And the old one like a thorn was cold And the five shearers stood blue as ice. The shepherds brought to the place a winter lamb. George Mackay Brown Kings and Shepherds was first published in The Scotsman newspaper (1983). Subsequently published in Christmas Poems, Perpetua Press (Oxford, 1984) and The Collected Poems of George Mackay Brown, edited by Archie Bevan (John Murray, 2005). The text is set to music and reproduced by permission of John Murray (Publishers) Ltd. on behalf of the late George Mackay Brown.

for SATB divisi choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 247
Commissioned by Conspirare. The first performance was given on 11 May 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fredericksburg, Texas, U.S.A., conducted by Craig Hella Johnson. Duration: 5 minutes
Text:
I am a spark without goal, without direction, Thrown into the universe as my journey began, Before long another sun bound itself to me And turning I lived for an unmeasured while, A kernel of life, empty in itself, Full of the energy that around me spun. O that I could without knowing for centuries Turn within the ungrasped radiating rose. Endless world, incomplete universe And without beginning, but where each part Image is of the whole and a lightshow Along the eternal ways, tell me, shall once, shall Ever there be an end to your steady fire, You, a diamond in the hollow of a hand?
Cirkelloop (Cycle), Albert Verwey (1865-1937), translated by Cliff Crego The words are used with the kind permission of the translator.

Richard Allain THE MAGI’S GIFTS for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 269
Commissioned by Merton College, Oxford as part of the Merton Choirbook, a collection of music being assembled to celebrate Merton College’s 750th anniversary in 2014. First performed on 19th January 2014 in Merton College Chapel by the Choir of Merton College, conducted by Benjamin Nicholas.
The Star That lights our steps, our minds; Our scholarly caution we leave behind. To journey, to believe. The Child Who holds our tearful gaze In helpless divinity, human grace, We rest, our quest achieved. The Dream That steers a safe return To tell – and still in truth ourselves to learn: To journey, to believe. How poor the gifts we offered, How precious those we received. Thomas Allain

Richard Rodney Bennett LULLABY BABY for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 277
Duration: c. 3 minutes
Lullaby baby, Lullaby baby, Thy nurse will tend thee as duly as may be. Be still my sweet sweeting, no longer cry; Sing lullaby, lullaby baby. Let dolours be fleeting, I fancy thee, I To rock thee and lull thee I will not delay me. Lullaby baby… What creature now living would hasten thy woe? Sing lullaby, lullaby baby. See for thy relieving, the time I bestow To dance and to prance thee as prettily as may be. Lullaby baby… The gods be thy shield and comfort in need! Sing lullaby, lullaby baby: He gave thee good fortune, and well for to speed, And this to desire, I will not delay me. Lullaby baby… John Phillip

Richard Rodney Bennett NOWELL, NOWELL, TIDINGS TRUE for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 287
Duration: c. 4 ½ minutes
Refrain: Nowell, nowell, nowell, this is the salutation of th’angel Gabriel. 1. Tidings true there be come new, sent from the Trinity, by Gabriel to Nazareth, city of Galilee: a clean maiden and pure virgin through her humility hath conceived the person second to deity. 2. When he first presented was before her fair visage, in most demure and goodly wise, he did to her homage, and said: ‘Lady from heav’n so high that Lordès heritage the which of thee would born be, I am sent on message.’ 3. Hail virgin celestial the meekest that ever was; Hail temple of deity and mirror of all grace; Hail virgin pure, I thee ensure, within full little space thou shalt receive and him conceive that shall bring great solace. 4. Suddenly she, abashed truly but not all thing dismayed, with mind discreet and spirit meek, to the angel she said: ‘With what manner should I child bear, the which ever a maid have lived chaste all my life and never man assayed?’ 5. Then again to her the angel certain answered: ‘O Lady dear be of good cheer, and dread thee ne’er a del; Thou shalt conceive in thy body very God himself in whose birth heav’n and earth shall joy, called Emmanuel.’ 6. ‘Not yet six months past,’ he said, ‘thy cousin Elizabeth, that barren was conceived Saint John, true it is that I tell. Since she in age why not in youth mayst thou conceive as well, if God will whom is possible to do ev’ry del.’ 7. Then again to the angel she answered womanly: ‘Whate’er my Lord command me do, I will obey meekly. Ecce, sum humilimma ancilla Domini secundum verbum tuum,’ she said, ‘fiat mihi.’*
*Behold I am the humblest handmaid of the Lord. According to thy word…be it done unto me.

Julian Marshall THE HOLLY AND THE IVY for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 299
The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood, The holly bears the crown. The holly bears a blossom, As white as the lily flower, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ To be our sweet saviour. Oh the rising of the sun And the running of the deer, The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir. The holly bears a berry, As red as any blood, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ To do poor sinners good. The holly bears a prickle, As sharp as any thorn, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ On Christmas Day in the morn. Oh the rising of the sun And the running of the deer, The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir. Trad.

Carl Rütti O NATA LUX DE LUMINE for SATB choir unaccompanied
NOVELLO 345
Duration: c. 3½ minutes
O nata lux de lumine O nata lux de lumine, Jesu redemptor saeculi, dignare clemens supplicum laudes precesque sumere. Qui carne quondam contegi dignatus es pro perditis, nos membra confer effici tui beati corporis. Laudes tibi nos pangimus, dilectus es qui filius, quem patris atque spiritus, splendor revelat inclitus.
O Light, born of the source of all light, Jesus, redeemer of this world, Of thy kindness, deign to take up the praises and the prayers of us, who humbly petition thee. Thou, who once wast content to be clothed in a body of human flesh, for those who had been lost, Join us together now, so that we may be made members of thy blessed Body. We sing our praises to thee, who art the beloved Son, Whom the renowned splendour of the Father and the Spirit does reveal. Trans. John Walters Š Novello & Company Limited
