Ideas The Interface of a Cube

i started drawing some ideas for my final piece.

As you can see from the first page to the second page there is a difference. At the beginning i don't know how to involve the human body into my work, so what i did was, i did some research on artist that work with human body's and i found anthony garmold, hi was also one of my main source of inspiration

i drew my final idea and annotated.

As you can see from the picture i also explained a bit more the colors i will be useign and why chose them, i also have a picture of a sculpture that i like and was part of the inspiration of my final piece.

For this unit i was only allowed to use: Black and white colors, my outcome must be a 3d sculpture and it must include 5 found objects Since the beginning i knew i wanted to work with something that was related to op art I had a few ideas of what i wanted to do but i was never sure about it, working with black and white was not challenging and also i was happy that i got a 3D sculpture but including 5 found objects was challenging so i decided to ignore it and later on ďŹ nd a solution

I explored possible ideas for a sculpture related to optical illusion, that could change shape when it is moved. I explored a few ideas and structures before deciding that I wanted to make something based on a topographical map.

Levels of illusion

After drawing a few ideas and trying to ďŹ gure out which one i liked the most i decided to do, 4 circles, each one is different size, on top of each circle i added this spiral shape, so when you look at it from the top it makes this illusion with your eyes.

After under each circle i decided to add different size squares that are made of transparent acrylic so i can put pictures on it.

We can see on the left page the measurements of each piece.

On this page i have pictures of the maquete that i did of my ďŹ nal product, this helped me to visualise my ďŹ nal product, i was very happy with the results but i change one thing, the circles were supposed to be made out of white acrylic but transparent acrylic looks much better

Testing

i got the idea of making the circles transparent form julio le parc work, as you can see there's two pictures of his work, for me it looks like if it was glass with light under.

Decisions for my piece

On this page i was testing with different pictures that go behind the squares.

My ďŹ rst idea was having the same picture on the three squares, to kind of give you this illusion, my aim was to, when you look at my pice it would play with your brain but i didn't get the result i was hoping.

It was a bit boring for the eye So i decided to have three different pictures on each square, on the ďŹ rst one is the picture of the mountains, but i pretend the pictures on a way that i look like a panoramic photo, after i have a picture of a building but one of them is facing down.

For the last picture i just chose a normal circle

Julio le parc Light and Movement

Sharp lines and hidden shapes

The first time Julio le parc experimented with light was in 1959, he placed lights inside a Clown au petit chapeau vert, by Bernard buffet, The collection of clowns small box, he did this with multiple small boxes, this small boxes reproduced different has made the artist famous all over the world. These paintings of great shapes that give you different feelings, the boxes were combined with the screens made purity are the symbol of Harlequin who takes a myriad of different faces to of Plexiglas slates, prisms, squares and circle shapes, using a scale of 14 colors. After he mark the incessant passages from dark to light, from joy to sadness. The continued to experiment with light and has achieved really good results. faces are very long, sometimes sad sometimes happy and are made with a palette of dull colors. The lines are bold and the black lines very marked The piece that I like the most and the one that i will be analysing is going to be Lumières are typical characteristics of his work, These paintings of sad clowns alternées translate a deep misery with an existential anxiety. Beijing, 1 Jan. 1989, Julio le parc Clown au petit chapeau vert, 1989 www.artnet.com/artists/bernard-buffet-2/world-trade The reason why I chose julio le parc as one of my three artists research analysis is because Oil on canvas -center-a-_27iQyPHwz1vACNxrUmjVg2. if you see his work is similar as mine regarding the theme of optical illusion, since the 100 x 81 cm first project we had to do I was already interested in working with illusion on now that weQuantum Cloud , what Antony Gormley wanted to achieve with this piece was have the chance to choose the theme and want that people try to find the human body inside the sculpture, in order to achieve it you must move around and try to find it yourself, from some angles He made this piece in 1993. you can see the human inside but from other angels you can’t ,as you can see wood, motor, metal, light the sculpture is really big, 30 m tall is not your usual size of a human body, this 600 x 400 x 40 cm creates and shock impetion, also this piece is placed outdoors and the outside of the human body moves with the wind and the natural will create different 236 1/4 x 157 1/2 x 15 3/4 in shades.the main shape is the human body as most of his work is based around human body sculptures and is obvious that the focal point on this “HELENE BAILLY GALLERY - PARIS.” HELENE BAILLY GALLERY, I.e. sculpture is the human body. As you can see most of the lines outside the Moz, human body are just random lines, most of the are straight lines. Testing new techniques and looking at different options

In my first page i started to come up with ideas of pieces that involve light I only came up with two ideas but i was very convinced with my first one Later on i went into looking at different tones of light, to see which one will fit better into my pieces, what i wanted was something warm but not very strong so when you see at my piece it looks clean and organize I also looked at how i will be putting the light into my piece

In This page at the beginning i kept looking at different tones of light but now on a white wall, and this changed completely my opinion Before i was convinced that i wanted to use a warm light, after looking at it in a white wall i liked more how the cold tone looks, i think it will suit my piece better, i was looking for something clean and cold tone is the right one.

I also decided the background of it.

On the other side i added pictures from the inspiration of my work, all of them are from julio le parc Lumière en vibration – Installation," 1968.

Space dome

I was about to start making the idea io had, but i noticed that we didn’t have enough time to make it really good, so i decided to keep that piece for next year and come up with a new ided.

Keeping the same theme of illusion but i also wanted to work with something different. It all started with buckminster fuller dome and the ďŹ rst thing that came to my mind was to do something with space So i looked at Tom sachs, we works a lot with space

I went into more detail about the space theme, I decided that i will be using aluminium on the outside as i noticed that a lot of the equipment used in the space, have a lot of shiny materials, some of the look like aluminium but also like golf paper.

Later on i drew a few sketches that were inspired by this “space� theme. I used pictures from this page and previous page as inspiration Developing my ideas Looking at different materials

The third idea was the one that i liked the most it's hard to see on paper, but it's supposed to be a 3 work that goes from higher to lower, i will not only play with the dimensions but also

This are 3 pictures that i took while i was trying to test with this technique.

It's not the same but the effect it's kind of similar, the reason why is because the paint we have at school is acryl

This are pictures from different artist that i have found, that i thought they look very interesting, mostly i looked for the colors used and tones, this are techniques that i have never worked with but i would like to. I do feel like my work needs more color, i know its not obligatory but i have a feeling that it will make it look much better at the end, also i have being working with similares techniques last year and in order to improve i want to experiment new techniques

Here i have 4 different pictures of my work during different stages final piece.

Picture number 1 is showing the process of choosing the colors, as you can see most of the where pretty similar so i had to change them, to make them more noticable.

Picture number 2 is showing the difference after changing the colors a bit, now it's more noticable Picture 3 is a semi finished piece, but later on i changed the colors to make them more noticable .

Last picture, the back, which i haven’t touched picture number 5 shows the process made on the back, as you can see its almost finished I'm only going to let it dry and we will see the results

Josef Albers: Creating illusion with color I this presentation i will be looking at Josef Albers work in order to answer my main question

Introduction The main reason why i chose Albers as my artist to investigate is because right away when I saw his work, I really liked it but also since the beginning of the year, what I wanted to improve on my exhibition was to add a more color into it but at the same time keep the same theme of illusion. Josef Albers work’s is the best example, even do he works on a 2d format and most of my work is 3d is till gives you the illusion Josef albers was actually a, teacher, painter , sculpture and a poet.he was also an art theorist and ,he would talk about the use of colors, and how each tone gives you a different feeling. He’s style is considered op art. Op art is a type of work that gives you the impression that the price is moving or you feel like you are going through,this is achieved by the use of lines,the use of tones and the use of patterns normally op art artist work with

Artist Context Josef Albers was a german artist born on march 19, 1888 and died on march 25, 1976 in the US, His style and movement are : Op art Bauhaus amd Geometric Abstraction

Artistic movement

Bauhaus: it was a architecture school that was founded in Germany by Walter Gropius, it was in 1919 when Germany lost the first world war,the main goal of this school was to combine the art world and the industry world; modernism and constructivism played a big role on the influence of Bauhaus.

Through the school they tried to create pieces where useful and beautiful at the same time in orde to adapt to this new lifestyle. Home of squares was a set of paintings that was composed of more than 1000 pieces of oil paintings. This pices use simple colors and normally would use the same color a few times to create an illusion, Josef Albers was obsessed by the dea that you could create illusion of three dimensions by only using different tones of colors, and we can clearly see it on this piece, the dark greens on the side makes it look like the piece is coming out, after that light blue/green followed by the grey gives me the impression that there's a flat surface Josef Albers: Homage to the Square - For Sale on Artsy, www.artsy.net/collection/josef-albers-homage-to-the-square.

Albers would sometime get back from work and applied the paint directly from the tube with a palette knife straight into a canvas, depending on his mood or what emotions he felt that day.

His main goal was to create an illusion but that was easy for the human eye to capture, and we can clearly see it on this example.

Analysis of formal qualities

The use of sharp shapes and lines also creates that illusion, for example we can see that on the top is much bigger than the bottom, after the the lines on the corner also make you feel like you are going through the painting.

What i did last year was to create illusion but with shapes and lines and not so much with color. My opinion

Home to the squers Josef Albers Oil on Masonite 1955 Bauhaus 120.6 x 120.6 cm Panting

I have being looking at if for at least 5 min and im not getting tired of it. This piece gives me the feeling of refreshment and like a jungle environment,that dark green gives me the feeling of natural life as well as the yellow, in the other hand the green/blue makes me think of water and last the grey of minerals. I believe depending on your mood you will get different feelings for the work.

Developing ideas Living picture

Planning my year, i decided that i wanted to do different formats, in order to to make my exhibition more interesting.

I wanted to have a picture,painting and a video.

I started with my own photograph. I wanted to keep the same theme of illusion, but illusion can be represented in multiple ways.

The reason why i chose this photograph is because, we can see that it has great potential to work with leading lines

This photograph is full of texture and small details, this can be shown well on a picture, and highlighting the texture, by making it pop out

This photo has great lighting and texture to work with

This photograph represents wll the concentric circle but also real movement can be well represented

This photograph shows well the aerial perspective, something interesting can come out of this photo

This photograph is great for showing the different tones of light, this can be well represented 3d By placing them on different levels

The reason why i chose this photograph is because, as you can see from the highlights there's a lot of lines to play with, different angles, directions, different tone of light.

This picture, i chose is because it's full of aggressive shapes, it will be nice to show them on a 3d format

What i like about this photo is how the background is very dark, and the you have the main shape very bright. It would be interesting to show all of this rhombus 3d

This idea originally came from a previous project, that we did in grade 10, where some people had pictures over weir, later on i saw this picture that kind of looks like wier "Endless Time" Grandfathe 6'3" tall x 18" deep

This idea came by a watch that one day i saw with my, the numbers were not in the right order.

With this idea i played a bit with the order and changing the size of the shapes, i made them bigger or change the completely shape My last idea was to make the numbers 3d but not at the same level, some higher some lower.

This will be done with acrylic but keeping behind the picture

Type of illusions: Last year when i was doing my research about illusion, i found out that there is multiple types of illusion, which i didn't know, the one that i have been working with the most is trying to make the picture pop out, this was my ďŹ rst intention but later on, and idea came to my mind and was to try and add motion/movement.

I will be adding movement to my piece by making the hands of the clock move.

I will be printing the image twice on photo paper, size a3 and will be cutting the parts i need, after that i will be cutting those parts on wood, layering them one on top of the other. After that i will be adding the real hands of the clock to make it move

Crazy Hours Franck muller

This is the picture of the watch i was inspired, they produce it in multiple colors.

As you can see the the numbers are not in the right order and the numbers are a bit out of proportion .

This watch is made by frank muller and it's called crazy hours

This was the picture i chose for my ďŹ nal piece, i edit the photograph a vit, to make the colors look better. I chose this one because i like how the light is concentrated in one point and movement can be shown well

2 Nina Cambron This is a picture of some testing i did, cutting out the different parts i needed, during this process i had the idea on adding a real watch, so just the hands. To represent movement, i was planning on buying it on amazon and then just modify it, to make it suitable to my work .

After this i added foam board under but unfortunately i did not take a picture of this stage , i did this to experiment with the levels, and what looks better

Materials

Nina cambron, is not a very known artist, she's from the use and she makes a 1 od 1 pice, she works a lot with glass and very bright colors as you can see from the example but, also she's using different tones of the same color The reason why i looked at her is because ďŹ rst of all there's not a lot of artist that work with clocks, and second of all i really like how you start to forget that is a clock and you start concentrating on the shapes of the background rather than the clock
