SPRING SUMMER ‘23
JOIN THE
Welcome to our Spring Summer brochure filled with Clan stories, snippets of history and of course many beautiful tartans and products old and new.
We can’t fit everything into these pages so when you find something interesting don’t forget that theme will be expanded on ten fold on our website. Every day we add more clan information, links to Societies as we make their acquaintance, FAQ’s about Scottish traditions and the tales behind each product and how they came to be. We love learning something new every day and we hope you enjoy sharing the journey with us.
As always we are deeply grateful not just for your interest and custom over the last 20 years, but for the appreciation of what we stand for – our total commitment to Scotland, the fabulous textiles we produce here, the communities we are proud to be a part of locally and all over the world and everything that they represent, to the inherent sustainability of our products and to leaving you, our customers, amazed and delighted.
Enjoy!

Find Your Clan or Tartan
Visit our clan pages and explore your roots where you can search by name, colour or region.
Top tips:
• Every clan has many septs and other names associated with it – these are listed on the clan pages
• The sound of a name is generally more important than the spelling, as standardised spelling is a fairly recent development
• Many believe that Mac is Scottish and Mc is Irish but in reality this is simply another spelling variation or abbreviation in ancient records
• You might have a clan or district (regional) connection
What of our Celtic cousins?
The Celtic nations include Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man and Brittany. There are tartans associated with all of these nations and all of our products can be made in any one of these tartans.
If you need some help and advice finding your tartan our Customer Service team offers a genuine Scottish welcome. We also offer Clan Consultations & Measuring Appointments Virtually via video call, in person at our Edinburgh store, from our US base in Albany, NY and pop up events around the USA and Canada.

Clan of the Month
Every month we choose a clan and celebrate their history, castles, famous faces and an interview or two with interesting people from the clan or society. We always welcome your input, so if it is your clans turn and you have stories to share let us know. It is so intriguing to hear the journey of Scots overseas and how they ended up there, along with how you continue to celebrate your heritage in so many different ways.

Our Clan of the Month for June, the Armstrongs, were one of the most numerous as well as the most powerful and feared of the Border clans. They possessed the greater part of Liddesdale and later spread into Eskdale and Annandale. Their constant forays over the Border to plunder and raid England kept the Borders in turmoil.

As soon as we settled on Albany as our new US home, we knew we had to design a tartan to represent the Scottish Community within Albany County. Designed by our very own Emily, the tartan was used to celebrate the opening of our new US Store in the town of Colonie as well as highlighting the strong Scottish heritage found throughout all of Albany County.

Maple Leaf
Affection for tartan cloth crossed the Atlantic first with Scottish regiments, who served garrison duty in Canada before Confederation, and later with the Scottish immigrants who settled in the Maritimes and United Canada. The Maple Leaf tartan incorporates the green of the leaves’ summer foliage, the gold which appears in early autumn, the red which appears with the coming of the first frost, and the brown tones of the fallen leaves.
