Tartan Clan

JOIN THE AUTUMN WINTER ‘23

Welcome to Autumn Winter 2023

Last year we celebrated 20 years of ScotlandShop and this year we celebrate 21, in human terms a coming of age, but in tartan with its thousands of years of history we have a long way to go! Since we shared our Spring Summer collection in March the year has flown by with so many fabulous pictures flooding in of tartan weddings, Highland Games outfits, and family celebrations featuring tartan at their heart. For our business to be a part of these memories is a true honour and you cannot imagine the pleasure it brings our team to receive them. Keep them coming!

This year we have designed tartans for some incredible organisations and there is nothing nicer than seeing those tartans come off the loom and being transformed into garments full of story and meaning. It has been really exciting to meet so many customers in our Edinburgh and Albany shops, on the Canada summer tour, at Highland Games in and around New York and back here in Scotland. Let us know if you are feeling left out and want us to visit your local Games or town as we are busy planning for 2024.

Our Clan of the Month celebrations continue, sharing your stories of ancestry and heritage from around the world, and if your Clan hasn’t been featured yet you can vote for it’s inclusion. We have tried to

include as many different tartans and inspiration in this most recent edition, but for the full experience the tartan finder on our website is the best place to start, and don’t forget out Virtual Appointments if you want us to talk you through or help with measurements. We do love to talk tartan!

Thank you as always for your passion for bonnie Scotland and her amazing textiles, we hope you enjoy this latest brochure and look forward to providing you with your little piece of Scotland very soon.

Enjoy!

Find Your Clan or Tartan

Search by name, colour or region

Top tips:

• Every Clan has septs and other names associated with it – these are listed on the Clan pages

• The sound of a name is generally more important than the spelling, as standardised spelling is a fairly recent development

• Many believe Mac is Scottish and Mc is Irish, but in reality this is simply another spelling variation or abbreviation in ancient records

• You might have a Clan or district (regional) connection

What of our Celtic cousins?

The Celtic nations include Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man and Brittany. There are tartans associated with all these nations and all our products can be made in any of these tartans.

If you need some help and advice finding your tartan, our Customer Service team offers a genuine Scottish welcome. We offer Clan Consultations & Measuring Appointments virtually via video call, in person at our Edinburgh store, from our US base in Albany, NY and at pop up events around the USA and Canada.

Clan of the Month

Every month we choose a clan and celebrate their history, castles, and famous faces, adding in an interview or two with interesting people from the Clan or society. We always welcome your input, so if its your Clan’s turn and you have stories to share, let us know. It’s so intriguing to hear the journey of Scots overseas, how they settled where they did, and how you continue to celebrate your heritage in so many different ways.

Steps to a perfect tartan fabric:

SHEARING

Trimming the woollen fleece off the sheep

CARDING

Brushing the wool fibres to organise them into a continuous web

SPINNING

A twisting technique to form yarn from fibres

DYEING

The application of colour to the yarn

WARPING

The accumulation of a number of yarns onto a single sheet or warp beam

WEFTING

Other yarns, drawn through and under the warp yarns to make the finished fabric

FINISHING

Removal of impurities and ensuring dimensional stability of the finished product

THE RESULT

Beautiful, sustainable, durable and traditional Scottish tartan

Wool, wonderful wool

Weaving is a long, careful, complex process, developed over centuries. The process cannot be rushed and it’s why the quality of our fabric is second to none.

Woven in Scotland

All our beautiful wool tartan fabrics are woven in Scotland by mills with hundreds of years of experience and tradition behind them. We offer a wide range of fabric weights suitable for every purpose from clothing and accessories to upholstery and soft furnishings. With over 500 tartans to choose from, you are spoilt for choice.

Tartan design

Commemorate your anniversary, corporate event or celebration with a unique tartan designed by ScotlandShop and registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.

Emily, our designer, will work with you to understand your story, identify significant colours, and define your dream outcomes, before producing beautiful, unique designs for you to choose from.

Looking for a tartan for uniforms or a particular garment? We can apply your design to a huge variety of images, to provide artists impressions of what the tartan will look like on kilts, skirts, waistcoats and more, before you commit to the weave.

Minimum cloth orders apply.

One of our favourite designs in 2023 where we created a tartan for The Washington Tattoo in 2 variations, one for the founders and members and another version for the general public.

St Andrew’s Day

St Andrew’s Day celebrations began in the 18th century in the United States, led by a group of wealthy Scottish immigrants in Charleston, South Carolina, wishing to reconnect with their Scottish roots and promote Saint Andrew’s philanthropic ideals. They set up the St. Andrew’s Society of Charleston in 1729 and began the tradition of celebrating on 30 November, while becoming famous in the area for their protection of widows and orphans. Similar Scottish societies were soon established across the United States and remain today.

Burns Night

Celebrating our national bard

Rabbie Burns was born in Alloway on January 25, 1759. Every year we celebrate his lyrical poetry and rewriting of Scottish folk songs with an Address to a Haggis… Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face, Great Chieftain o’ the pudding-race!

When it was proposed that a Robert Burns tartan should be created, it was decided to model it on the black and white Shepherd’s Check. The overcheck introduced ‘the hodden grey and a’ that’ and a little flavour of green fields was added.

Tee off in Tartan

The first record of golf in Scotland dates back to the 15th century when in 1457, golf was banned by parliament as it was seen as a distraction from military training. The ban was repealed in 1502 and King James IV made the first documented purchase of golf clubs in the same year.

Show allegiance to the Clan

Sharing kinship, the word ‘Clan’ derives from the Gaelic word ‘Clann’ or ‘Clanna’ for children, and describes a close-knit group of relatives, however you didn’t need to be related to the Clan chief to be considered a part of the Clan. Before Clan followers began wearing their chief’s Clan crest they wore their Clan plant tucked into their bonnet.
