A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks RUOK? Across Australia, Thursday 12th was national RUOK? Day. RUOK is the abbreviation for the all-important question, “Are you ok?” A question we are encouraged to ask our family members, school friends, work colleagues and others who we think could be struggling with life… and if they are, take action to help. The RUOK? website, www.ruok.org.au/joinr-u-ok-day, provides guidance and assistance in enabling all of us to help people struggling with mental health issues like anxiety, stress, loneliness, depression. Here are some tips from RUOK: “This year in the build-up to R U OK? Day we’re encouraging everyone to Trust the Signs, Trust your Gut & Ask R U OK? We want everyone to feel confident they know the signs someone might need support by listening to what they’re saying, seeing what they’re doing or knowing what’s going on in their life. Whenever you notice a change, no matter how small, we want you to trust your gut

and start an R U OK? conversation. Got a niggling feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are ok, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.” Organisations available to help if you or someone you know needs some advice include, but not limited to: Lifeline Australia 13 11 14 Mensline 1300 78 99 78 Relationships Australia 1300 364 277 Beyond Blue 1300 224 636 Kids Helpline 1800 551 800

Today's Reflection Mr Samuel Gittins Chaplain

He was despised and rejected – a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down.

Tried to comfort someone and heard: “What would you know?!”

Isaiah 53:3 [NLT-SE]

It is easy to believe that someone else cannot understand our hurt, our pain. And yet, long before He was born, it was spoken of Jesus:

Not only does God know and understand our suffering, in Jesus He bore them upon Himself.

6pm for 6:30pm performance at the Bickerdike Centre, All Saints Campus Friday 1 November Week 3, Term 4.

Student Leadership Development Program Thirty-four Year 11 students submitted applications to join the 2020 Program. The quality of the applications was very high, and it was a difficult task to decide on a shortlist. The students who did not make this list should be very proud of the applications they submitted, and I hope that they will join one of the Leadership Committees that will form early in Term 4. Twenty-four students have been listed as candidates and have nominated for student leadership positions, including College Captain, House Captain, Academic Prefect, Boarding Prefect, Chapel Prefect, Co-curricular Prefect, International Students’ Prefect and Social Justice Prefect. Each student will attend an interview during Week 8, before the selection panel again convenes to consider appointments for each position. Thrive Conference 2019 On Friday 6 September, I was fortunate to accompany Ms Tracey Leaf, Mr Chris Jackman and Mr Samuel Gittins in attending the Thrive Conference 2019 held at Knox Grammar School in Sydney. A number of wonderful speakers provided insights into the disciplines of Positive Psychology and Faith, and explored how these two areas can intersect and work together for the benefit of students and their school communities. The Conference provided an invaluable opportunity to see how the science of Positive Psychology can be implemented effectively within a Christian school environment.

Pre-Kindergarten Pre-Kindergarten have concluded their Community Workers unit for the term with a special visit by the paramedics from Bathurst Ambulance station. The children had the opportunity to explore the inside of the ambulance and took turns using a stethoscope

and heart rate monitor. As spring inches closer we tried our artistic skills at a still life painting using beautiful wattle. As we explored the letter “Z”, our Pre-K Pizzeria was open for business. The children loved taking orders and creating delicious pizzas for all!

HICES ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2019 The 2019 Scots All Saints College Junior athletics team was bursting at the seams. It was particularly exciting to be able to take such a huge team to represent the college and compete at the HICES athletics carnival this year. With such a large representation, the team over the course of the day, collectively racked up the points. After some confusion in the official’s box, Scots All Saints were eventually named the winners of the Division 1 Average shield!

Spring Fair Family Fun After an enormous effort from Tracey Finau and her Committee, the annual Spring Fair fundraising event on the All Saints Campus was held last Sunday. Despite the cool, windy weather over the weekend, our school community continued to show its strong spirit welcoming hundreds of people from across Bathurst and the region to the College. I wish to thank Tracey and her Committee for their efforts, and the parents and friends of the College community who volunteered their time and helped drive the event. Most importantly I wish to recognise the amazing effort from the College maintenance team who were so accommodating of the requests made of them in the weeks coming up to the event. This event can only be a success with the wonderful support of the P&F working together with parents, friends, family and Scots All Saints College staff. Thank you to everyone for their help with this event. Your efforts are tremendous and have not gone unnoticed. A big thank you to all our sponsors and those who donated prizes for our raffle. For those that did not make it on the day, you missed out on a fine offering of food choices, including heart-warming homemade soups, fish and chips, the traditional BBQ, coffee, and sweet treats including cakes and pavlovas. Thank you to the teaching staff and volunteers who continue to grow our children's minds and provide them with co-curricular opportunities. We were

entertained throughout the day by our student performers with dance, singing, music, band ensembles and the Pipes and Drums. The young at heart were able to enjoy their time at the Spring Fair on the traditional carnival rides, like the dodgem cars, or the giant slide, and try out the mechanical bull, laser tag or the virtual reality experience driving remote control racing cars. There were opportunities to shop at various stalls from both local suppliers and our amazing families who donated their home grown produce, plants, and food. A highlight of the day was the official opening of Stage 1 of the Old Bathurstians’ Museum, housed in the Watson Room at Esrom House, All Saints Campus. A Committee of the Old Bathurstians’ Union with Mr John Cranfield and Mr Tim Sergeant attended with Head of College, Mr John Weeks and Mrs Denise Weeks to launch the museum. The Old Bathurstians’ Museum houses memorabilia and displays from the early education at the school stemming back throughout 145 years of history. Only yesterday we held our latest P and F meeting, and I look forward to providing you with some insights form this next week. Take Care. Lindsay Wild P&F President

Every step of the way they are guided to build skills in goal setting, project planning, critical-thinking and problem-solving. Senior Space School is management training for young leaders. With greater program depth, students have incredible access to NASA. They visit areas not accessible by the public; and engage directly with NASA experts to design and plan their own space mission within a given budget.
