A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
On behalf of the College staff, we look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Monday 31st January. We hope everyone has enjoyed a restful holiday and are feeling keen to get back into the new school year! Many things have happened since we broke for the summer holidays, and I am sure that everyone is looking forward to catching up and sharing their news. Lots of great things have been happening at the College. Most importantly and impressively were the receipt of the 2021 HSC results and ATARS. You should have received the separate report on these. Again, congratulations to our students, teachers and parents on a wonderful team effort. Scots All Saints is officially ranked as the No.1 school in our region. That’s something to be really pleased about! Starting back Details for the start of the new year were provided in your packs last term but these are summarised in this edition of The Roar by Mr Jackman for The Junior School, Mr Weeding for the Senior School. A separate letter has been prepared by Mr Le Couteur for our Boarders. If you are unsure about start-up detail, please send an email to the relevant person. Mr Jackman - Head of Junior School chris.jackman@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au
Mr Le Couteur - Director of Boarding anthony.lecouteur@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au Rapid Antigen testing kits We have taken delivery of these kits. Distribution procedures are noted in this newsletter. Following discussions with parents, Boarders will be tested by the Clinic staff. Heath department directives The following link will take you to the Health and Education Department protocols which have been developed for schools to follow over the next 4 plus weeks. Term 1 Covid-smart measures for schools. Most of this has been shared with you but the Covid Response Team (CRT) is ensuring that we apply these settings to our local conditions which best protect our children, staff, parents and wider community. Communication is the key As we start back to school, we are aware of the potential health risks we face. We all have responsibilities to inform, trust and support each other through these challenging times. We need to remain “ever vigilant” by monitoring the health of our children and family members and limiting the risks of infection. The College has a dedicated hot-line for parents to confidentially report any positive readings connect@scotsallsaints.nsw. edu.au so that we can alert others who are close contacts, so they in-turn, can take appropriate action. Hopefully this won’t happen but we must be prepared. Until next week!

Senior School Mr Andrew Weeding Deputy Head P-12/ Head of Senior School
Welcome to the 2022 academic year which commences formally on Monday 31 January. I hope all students had a nice break and are now rested and ready for the year ahead. A special welcome to the students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who join us on the Senior Campus for the first time. I start by stating the obvious in that the return to school is not what we hoped for when we finished up at the end of 2021. We do have very specific guidelines as from by the Department of Health issued to us through the Association of Independent Schools (AIS). These guidelines have been incorporated into our startup operations to ensure we can get all students into their studies as efficiently, but most importantly as safely as possible.
Day 1 - Monday 31 January When students arrive, they are to report to their Team Leaders who will issue them with their locker number, a hard copy of their timetable and diary. Team Leaders will be located as follows: •
Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) in front of Cooerwull House
•
Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) in front of the Day House
•
Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) on the Seniors Quadrangle in front of The Cameron Library
Students will go to their Period 1 class at 8.55am. As students will not know in advance what subjects they will have that day, teachers will not expect them to have all of their textbooks. For Day 1, it will suffice for students to arrive with their laptop, a fully equipped pencil case and an exercise book for each subject. Please ensure your child returns with the correct uniform, including attention to hair and jewelry requirements as per the Student Handbook. In particular, all students must bring their SASC broad brimmed hat or the formal hat (not the peak cap). Due to COVID guidelines, some activities including classes, chapel services and assemblies may be conducted outside and a hat will be essential. Pick up / drop off Over the break, significant work was carried out in preparation to lay an asphalt cont. page 4

surface in front of the staff carpark to facilitate a dedicated area for dropping off and picking up of students. At the time of writing, the asphalt hasn’t been laid due to the weather, but we are still counting on this area being ready. Please do not park in this drop off/pick up zone, it is strictly a 1 minute set down zone only to facilitate traffic flow. The driveway in front Karalee House is now for bus movement only and no longer a thoroughfare for student drop off/ pick up. During Week 1 there will be staff on hand to help everyone get familiar with the new arrangements. Please note that due to the COVID guidelines that we operating under, parents/carers are not to get out of their cars. Outdoor café and dining hall I am pleased to inform you that we can resume operation of the Outdoor Café. To ensure the café is operating as safely as possible in a way that minimises mixing of students in cohorts, there will be dedicated areas for students to line up based on year groups. Please note the Outdoor Café accepts cash, debit or credit card. As we did last term, students will only be able to report to the dining hall at a specifically allocated time. Full details regarding the Outdoor Café and the Dining Hall will be provided in the assembly on the first day back. Absences Full details of day-to-day operations can be found in the Student Handbook. I would, however, like to use this letter to highlight the arrangements for absences. If a student is sick, it is essential that communication is made by a parent/carer prior to 9am. The best way to make this notification is by using the dedicated email address seniorabsences@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au . If a student is to be late or depart early a notification must be received in advance using the same email address. Active Afternoons will proceed as per the timetable with Years 7 and 8 on Tuesday and Years 9-12 on Thursday. Mr Wilkinson will provide details to students in a separate communication.
Boarding school Mr Anthony Le Couteur Head of Boarding 7-12 I trust that you have all enjoyed a lovely
Christmas and New Year with family and that there is excitement building in your households surrounding the return to school. For some, there will be trepidation and for others overwhelming joy about seeing their friends. There will be homesickness and tears but rest assured, there will be laughter. We start the year at capacity of 150 in all boarding houses and a growing waiting list. There has been an enormous amount of work done over the holidays to prepare the boarding houses for the boarding community to be together on one campus.
We welcome Mr Matthew Oakes to the team as Head of Thompson House. Mrs Woodlock and Mrs Jones continue taking the reins in Ives and Galloway. At the end of last year, a number of our boarding assistants graduated from their respective universities and therefore moved away to start the next chapter in their lives. We wish them well and thank them for their service. As a result, we welcome a number of new boarding assistants to our team and look forward to the positive impact they will have on the boarding community. Unfortunately, Omricon still looms and is a challenge we will need to face, at least for the beginning of the year. Government directives are very clear that schools should remain open and therefore boarding houses. However, there is still a requirement that we do everything we can to minimize the risk. Government directives are that we start 2022 in a similar fashion to the way we ended 2021. Advice from NSW Health is that we may be able to lift some restrictions after the first four weeks of Term 1. It is my hope and desire that we have a boarding gathering at some point in Term 1 so that we can all get to know each other. Further correspondence regarding the start of term for boarders will be sent to boarding parents via email. Thank you all for your understanding as we navigate the start of 2022. All students are welcome back at school on Monday 31st January and the school will be operating under Level 3 plus restrictions.
picking up children from the Preparatory School must collect their child at the gate between 3.00pm and 3.30pm and there will be a staff member at the gate to greet them. If a parent/carer wants to drop off or pick up their child outside these hours they will need to call 63327355 and a staff member will come to the gate.
All students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will gather in their Year groups on the Chapel lawn from 8.30am on the first day of school. As in term 4 last year, due to Covid restrictions, the previous 'kiss and drop' arrangements still apply. More detail is noted below. We look forward to welcoming parents back on campus as soon as restrictions ease.
Parents and carers picking up children from the After School Care need to call 63327355 and a staff member will come and bring your child from the gate. Parents and Carers cannot enter the Preparatory School playground. All parents and carers picking up their children from After School Care must check in via the QR Code on the gate which is specific for After School Care.
Health Guidelines In preparation for the return, we need all families to be aware of the guidelines given to us by Health through the Association of Independent Schools (AIS) including;
Public Transport: Masks are mandatory on public transport and school buses.
Physical distancing and separation of cohorts: Where possible, students are encouraged not to mix with those in other Stages. On the first day back, students will be given directions on where they can be located at recess and lunch and which bathrooms to use. Masks: Masks are mandatory for all students over the age of 12 and strongly recommended for children under the age of 12. Hygiene: Teachers will ask students sanitise their hands before entering their classroom and then on departure. Students will also be encouraged to wash their hands with soap when using the bathroom. Teachers will ensure classrooms are well ventilated will windows and doors open.
Consideration of appropriate ventilation: Teachers will ensure that classrooms have adequate ventilation through the use of windows and doors be opened. Physical Education Uniforms: Students are required to wear sports uniform on the day they have practical Physical Education lessons to avoid sharing the change rooms. Whist we are using the swimming pool for PE lessons students should wear their PE clothes to school with their swimmers under them. They will need to bring dry underwear to put on after they swim. cont. page 7
Drop off and Pick up of Students: Where possible, parents are asked to remain in their vehicles at drop-off and pick-up to reduce the risk of congestion at peak school times. We do recommend that parents hold their child’s hand to cross roads if their child is 10 or under. Parents are not permitted to enter classrooms. Parents that need to enter the school grounds for any reason are asked to wait at the front of the main Esrom House Building on the lawn and are reminded to social distance, QR code in and collect their child and quickly as possible. Parents and carers dropping off children to the Preparatory School must deliver their child to the gate between 8.30am and 9.00am and there will be a staff member at the gate to greet them. 2022 Buses Following a substantial growth in enrolments ahead of the 2022 school year, a comprehensive review has been undertaken of the College’s own bus fleet, along with assessing the ability of local bus operator’s ability to transport our students to and from our junior and senior campuses. The College will continue to operate bus services to Orange, Millthorpe, Blayney and Lithgow areas in 2022. Growth in student numbers from the Blayney and Millthorpe region will see the 57 seat College Coach allocated to a combined Millthorpe/Blayney bus run in 2022. This will see a change to the Lithgow bus service, which will now be divided into two seperate services. In 2022 a more direct service will operate to and from Lithgow, along with a second bus service being established catering for students from Wallerawang/ Portland/Yetholme/Walang/ Napoleon Reef and Raglan. All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator Welcome back sports fans. I hope the break was great and the batteries are charged back up to 100%. As you know, the start of 2022 won’t be what you’d consider ‘normal’, but to use a sporting cliche we’ll take things one week at a time. I’ll keep you updated with all sporting related news via email or the weekly sports report that appears in The Roar. As always, if you have any questions please shoot me through an email. Active Afternoons With the restructuring of our Junior and Senior Campuses, we’ve slightly changed our Active Afternoons schedule. Our updated weekly schedule is as follows:
Rugby Pre Season Begins week 1 of term 1, Thursday After School with additional optional morning and after school sessions to be released shortly. This year there is the introduction of the Passport to Play which requires a minimum number of non-contact and contact training sessions to be completed prior to playing a game. This must be completed in Term 1 to be eligible for ISA in Term 2. Players and parents are encouraged to get in touch with our Rugby MIC, Mr Freeman, if they have any questions regarding our 2022 Rugby program. We’re also asking any boarders who are interested in playing Rugby this year to pack their Rugby gear for Term 1.
