The Term Two Parent Weekend is coming up on the weekend of 24-26 May with the main focus being on the Scots Campus for this term. The key aim of the Parent Weekend is for staff, parents and students to come together 23 May 2019 and make an extra special effort to celebrate as a community. The boarding Kindergarten 2020 Info Night 7:00 pm families particularly make an effort to join with us and it provides an parents who are interested in enrolling opportunity for parents to get to know each other better and to feel a part of For their child into Kindergarten in 2020 this special community. All parents should have received an invitation. • Foundation Day Chapel on Sunday 26 May at 9:30 am in the Aikman Hall, Scots Campus. As a special service it is an expectation for all students in Years 9-12 and parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

The next Parent Weekend and Foundation Day Chapel will be held at Scots Campus.
• Dedication of the refurbished Senior School Library and morning tea immediately following the Chapel Service at 10:30 am. The Dedication will be very short with an opportunity to tour this wonderful facility and to view displays. It was a real delight to be able to attend the Bathurst Highland Society Debutante Ball on Saturday night. Our debutantes and their partners all presented well and clearly showed the benefit of attending rehearsals every Tuesday night for about 10 weeks to prepare them for the formalities and to learn the dances.

They learnt 12 traditional Scottish dances during this time and clearly enjoyed themselves at the Ball. Scots All Saints College was well represented with 22 couples and great support from family, staff and school friends. It was also a wonderful social night for the families and friends of the Year 11 students who did our College proud. It was a real pleasure for me to be invited to be the Guest of Honour to receive the debutantes and their partners and to address the large gathering. I particular wish to thank Mr Chris Morgan (President of the Highland Society) for this great honour and for his very generous and kind words expressed on the night.
The Highland Society’s chosen charity this year is Daffodil Cottage. Proceeds from the Ball will lead to the purchase of a number of Syringe Driver Units which are used to control pain for palliative care patients over a 24-hour period. The unit comprises of a syringe, pushed by a driver, so that over a 24 hour period it will administer medication to keep pain under control for the patient. This allows patients to be looked after at home by family and carers. Each Syringe Driver unit costs about $1500 and Scots All Saints College is very privileged to be able to support this very important charity and the Highland Society through the involvement of our students in the Ball.
I was able to consider the relevance of such a ball in a modern world where gender equity is rightly the focus and where such events can be seen as anachronistic. This is just a small part of what I said in my address: Some would see Debutante Balls as something from the past in a time where gender equity didn’t exist and where young women were presented to society for matchmaking with eligible bachelors. This event is not about such a world and in that sense the idea could be seen as anachronistic. However, like many traditions of the past that are fun, it is still good to keep them going in a new way that honours all participants and keeps the fun going for a new generation. The Ball in 2019 is about young men and women joining together in a spirit of equality, to have fun together and to respect the individual qualities of each other and the traditional cultural aspect of the past. I have observed these young men and women treating each other with respect and in a perfectly natural and wholesome manner. I have observed some beautiful and passionate people from the Highland Society willingly share their love of dance with these young people. In doing so they are ‘elders’ in our culture imparting their skills and love for dance, and a great deal

The date for the Highland Jazz Night has been changed to Saturday 15 June. This is to ensure it coincides with a home Rugby fixture so that performers are easily able to play Rugby and perform at the Highland Jazz Night. The Aikman Hall is usually full to capacity for this occasion. The Highland Jazz Night showcases our Pipes and Drums, Highland Dancers and some of our music students. It is quite an informal night where guests are seated at tables of 8-10 with food and drinks supplied by the guests. Supper can also be purchased from the server. This is advance notice of the new date. Please keep a look out for upcoming information in The Roar over the next few weeks and join with family and friends for a wonderful night out.

The Music Department is busy with preparations for next week’s Amadeus Academy launch. This represents a ground breaking moment for our new College presenting new and exciting opportunities for our students. As part of the Academy Launch internationally acclaimed Australian pianist Aura Go will be presenting a workshop and masterclass for talented and interested students during period 3 and 4 in the All Saints Campus performance room. In the evening, the official launch will take place in the Scots Performing Arts Centre. Canapés and refreshments will be served from 6:30 pm with guests entertained by the Amadeus Academy String Quartet. The official proceedings and concert will be around 6:50 pm with guests entertained by Emma Russell, Isabel Randall and Charlie Croaker performing alongside Aura Go. New College bus service for Orange and surrounding areas Scots All Saints College will be expanding its private bus fleet to transport current and new students travelling from Orange and the surrounding district to our Bathurst campuses. While the finer details of bus stops and routes are being finalised, arrangements are well underway to have a new Orange bus run available and on the road from the start of Term 3. This decision is a direct result of popular demand and interest from families from across the region seeking a more affordable, family-focused and indeed, a more communityminded all-round College of excellence for their children in the Central West.

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Soloist’s Recital last week. Whilst I was disappointed to miss out on this event, it was great to be a part of the Lithgow Campus Open Day to welcome some prospective parents and tell them all about our great school. Similarly, I’m enjoying the start of our Winter Sport season and the buzz around our courts and fields in the afternoon. Our uniforms look terrific and distinctive and the cheering from the sidelines of a Saturday morning builds that great sense of community. CWA Public Speaking Tess Yordanoff (Year 3) and Sybilla Chapman (Year 4) will represent Scots All Saints College at the CWA Public Speaking Competition to be held on Tuesday 21 May at James Sheehan College in Orange. Both girls delivered outstanding speeches in Round 1 of our Public Speaking Competition and we wish them all the best as they take on a wide range of students from around the district. Bounce Back Bounce Back! is an award winning positive education approach to wellbeing, resilience and socialemotional learning for primary school children and we’re excited to be implementing it across our Junior School. All students will take part in a 25-30 minute weekly lesson and content will be embedded throughout the week. This term, classes will be focusing on courage, looking on the bright side and identifying emotions. School Photos Next Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 May is the Scots All Saints College Photo Day. Literature Festival – ‘Space to Read’ 17, 18 and 19 June 2019 Author/Illustrator introductions: This week, we would like to introduce you to Dr Martin Chatterton. Dr Martin Ed Chatterton, has been writing, illustrating and performing successfully around the world for the last thirty years. His books for children and adults have been published in more than a dozen languages, and have won or been shortlisted in awards in the UK, US and Australia. He has illustrated books by some of the leading names in children’s literature and has an ongoing co-writing relationship with global publishing phenomenon, James Patterson. As ‘Ed Chatterton’, he writes adult crime fiction and in 2017 completed his PhD on slavery.
Martin will be presenting book talks to students from Years 3 to 6 and conducting writing workshops with Years 7, 8 and 9.

Middle School Mr Chris Jackman Head of All Saints Campus / Director of Middle School
This time last week, I was paddling a canoe along beautiful Lake Yarunga in the Kangaroo Valley with the Year 8 students on their Outdoor Education camp. The water was like glass and the bright blue sky made the conditions idyllic for paddling. The trip lasted four days and not only involved paddling a Canadian canoe but encouraged the students to work collaboratively together, solving problems as they arose along the way. How will we cook dinner? Where will we camp? How do we light a fire? How do we get to our next campsite? All questions that had to be answered by the students alone. Our wonderful Year 8 students displayed fantastic initiative and proved to be more than capable of travelling and surviving in the Australian wilderness. I was most impressed by the manner in which they worked as a team and supported each other. Learning through experience and finding solutions to real-life problems in the outdoors offers powerful learning experiences that can be related back to home and school life. During the nightly debriefing sessions around the camp fire the students could clearly articulate the value their learning experiences will have in their day to day life. I would like to thank all of the teachers who enthusiastically participated in the Year 8 Camp. They too realise what a valuable experience such outdoor education camps have for the children.

SENIOR SCHOOL This week our Year 9 students have been sitting the NAPLAN tests. Few topics polarise like NAPLAN and if you have been reading or watching the news this past week, you may have seen the reports, articles and letters either in support of or calling for the discontinuation of NAPLAN testing in Australia. Like most educators, I certainly have my view on the value of data to inform our teaching and learning practices and the best method for collecting data. What I would like to focus on today, however, is how fabulously our Year 9 students engaged with the process this year. Students were organised with equipment, entered the hall in a mature manner and participated in the tests in a way that demonstrated they were giving it their all. What a privilege to work with young people who so capably exemplify the values of our College! NAPLAN results are provided to schools from mid-August to midSeptember and we will notify parents when reports are being sent out. CONGRATULATIONS to Breahna Burgess (Year 9) who attended the NSW All Schools Swimming this week. Breahna was the only competitor from Scots All Saints College to attend. A wonderful effort. Her results were: Girls 12-14 years 400 freestyle: 5th place, Girls 12-14 years 400 IM: 6th place SCOTS CAMPUS PHOTOS Just a reminder that the Scots Campus photos are scheduled for Wednesday 29 May (Week 5A). YEAR 12 PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS An email has been sent to parents of Year 12 students with instructions for booking through PTO for the upcoming interviews. The interviews will be held on Friday 24 May 3:30 pm – 6:45 pm, in the Aikman Hall. Year 12 students are expected to attend the interviews with their parents. If parents are unable to attend, we would invite students to still book interviews as this is a great opportunity for them to engage with their teachers in a formal discussion about their progress. The evening is divided into interview time slots of seven minutes duration. If you believe you will need longer than seven minutes, please contact the class teacher. I kindly ask that on the evening all participants promptly observe the signal to progress to the next interview as this helps us to ensure the evening runs smoothly and in a timely manner. 7-12 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Tuesday 21 May on Scots Campus. JUNE LONG WEEKEND & THE PUPIL FREE DAY Please note Tuesday 11 June is a pupil free day. The staff will be involved in professional development all day. Classes re-commence after the long weekend on Wednesday 12 June.

Co-curricular Mr Justin Adams Director of Co-curricular Swimming Success We congratulate Breahna Burgess (Year 9) on her outstanding results at the NSW All Schools Swimming Carnival on Monday 13 May. Breahna swam in the 400m freestyle (finishing in 5th place) and the 400m individual medley (finishing in 6th place). Her achievements at the NSW All Schools follow on from her fantastic results at the National Swimming Championships in Adelaide during the most recent holidays (15-21 April) where Breahna competed in the 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley, 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle and 200m breaststroke. Breahna swam some of her personal best times at these championships (particularly in the longer races) and reported that she found the championships an amazing experience. Breahna’s sensational results this swimming season demonstrate the extraordinary talent and commitment that she has for her swimming. She finds time each week to swim nine sessions averaging 4km each and does an additional two strength and conditioning sessions as well. RFS Cadets Our rural fire service cadets complete their training next Monday. The RFS Cadets have been fine tuning their firefighting skills and developing their theoretical knowledge of bush fires. The Field Day and Graduation will not be held until October. This is where our students take their skills into a competition against other schools. We are planning to run some practice sessions early in Term 4 to prepare the crews for this fun day. Life Guard Training Our swimming coach and program coordinator Sharon Inwood had an eager group of students last Wednesday afternoon being trained in Pool Life Guarding. The qualification that the students are working toward covers topics and develops skills in performing safe rescues, first aid, oxygen resuscitation, the use of a spinal board, and monitoring pool operations. A final opportunity to join the group is being expressed. It is best if students are

turning 16 years or over this year. In Term 3, Sharon will run a Teacher of Swimming training course. Winter Sport – attendance Thank you to all the parents and students in helping get prepared for the start of the winter season. We are now well underway and many of our teams are starting to form some great combinations. We remind students and parents that attendance at training and matches is extremely important and that should a student need to miss a training session or a weekend fixture that written notification is given in advance to the supervising staff member or master in charge of the sport. There have been some students missing training without explanation which is quite a concern and causes unnecessary stress for the staff member. Please be warned that repeat offenders will be given disciplinary actions.
7-12 Athletics Carnival A reminder from Mr Gardner that the Year 7 -12 Inter House Athletics Carnival will be held next Tuesday 21 May on the Senior Campus. It is anticipated that the carnival will start at 9:15 am and run through until 4:15 pm (it is a sport afternoon so we have a little extra time). Our Year 7 -10 students have been refining their skills and recording some trial times during PDHPE lessons. Being our first athletics carnival as the new College our expectation is for students to compete to the best of their abilities in at least one track event and two field events. As our age groups are much larger, there will be performance standards set to assist with getting through all the events. Students are required to wear their house polo shirts, college sport shorts or track pants, dark colored compression tights may be worn under shorts. Students are reminded to take precaution against the sun by wearing sunscreen and a Scots All Saints College hat (whilst not competing).

Historical tale exploring wars of the past On Friday, 10 May Year 9 was visited by the very talented Brett Hunt. The historic story teller is an actor, playwright, song writer and musician, and he performed for us his play ‘Fighting the Kaiser’. The play about World War 1 followed a man named Gassy, which was his nickname, and his recount of his stories in the war. Taken from the experience of an Australian, Gassy, who got his name because he was bombed with mustard gas, is clearly battling with the sad reality of shellshock. His mind is clearly deteriorating because the events of the play are spoken to his dead friend which he 'imagines' as alive. This play that is both entertaining and educational at the same time and I think I can speak for the whole grade when I say we are thankful he came and showed us a little bit more of our past. Brett Hunt, a musician and performer, has a longstanding history in Australian armed forces. His great grandfather, grandfather and father all fought for Australia in various wars, and though Hunt doesn't serve himself, he does the country well in his historical diligence. Hunt has dedicated many years in his search for historical accuracy to create the performances that have become so popular. Combined with iconic musical references and superb acting skills, Hunt’s historical tales explore wars of the past and the lives of those who fought them. He creates educational, accurate and engaging acts for all audiences. These performances include adventurous, adrenaline-pumping stories, little-known facts and tearjerking tales to captivate and educate. His performances honour those who defend our country, no matter how their story ends. One cannot help but become invested in his thrilling shows. Year 10 was granted such an opportunity on Friday 10 May. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about Hunt's father and the rest of Three Platoon on their journey through Vietnam. Titled 'Dusted Off' this performance featured stunning tales of dedication and selflessness. One of the musical excerpts featured was the iconic Redgum song, 'I Was Only 19'. The line "Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon" is a direct reference to Brett's own father, Francis Hunt. With such intriguing information, Brett Hunt's performances are not to be missed. An exhilarating experience for all and an afternoon to remember. Student writing Book Review: The Illuminae Files The Illuminae Files by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman are a futuristic, sci-fi trilogy set in 2575. The first novel focus on the events surrounding Kady Grant and Ezra Mason, more specifically the destruction of their home, the Kerenza colony, and their escape from the Beitech dreadnaught class battleship Lincoln while aboard the science vessel Hypatia. The second novel focuses on Hanna Donnelly and Nik Malikov aboard the Heimdall Station, the nearest warp gate to the Kerenza colony and safe haven for the survivors aboard the Hypatia, as it gets overrun by an elite BeiTech team. The final novel takes us back to Kerenza where the Beitech invasion force is struggling to keep the remaining population under control. It focuses on Asha Grant, Kady’s cousin and Rhys Lindstrom, Asha’s ex, who just arrived with the invasion force. The thing that makes this trilogy truly unique and captivating is the way it’s written. Kaufman and Kristoff have written the novel in third person, but it has a unique twist.

Instead of just telling the story the authors have written the novels using audio file transcripts and security footage that has been written out. Not only is this unique and allows for interesting page designs but it makes the reader feel more involved. Instead of having them just reading a book, they’re seeing through security footage, through body cams on soldiers. Kristoff and Kaufman have found the perfect balance between showing and telling. They give their readers the freedom of their imagination and then direct that imagination. However, none of this would work if the novels weren’t incredibly well written, and they are! The characters are unique and feel real, they all have their flaws and the way they overcome them fits nicely into the plot, which itself is incredibly unique. Overall The Illuminae Files are an incredible read, you will cry, laugh and be put on the edge of your seat. It is incredibly immersive and takes you to another world, which you yourself can shape and picture. This trilogy goes down as my favourite read of all time. By Digby Sharpham

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders received full voting rights in 1965 when WA was the last to demolish the restricting policies. People throughout our history have fought tooth and nail to have equality in choosing what happens to the land they live in, and I think we take that for granted. Many people don’t appreciate the importance of having this choice and throw it away, choosing to donkey vote, unknown to their own loss. Therefore it is vital that we condone the research into the political world of Australia’s government and make an educated decision based on your opinion and fact. This does not have to be an addiction where scouring the internet for the latest news becomes a daily chore, it is just a necessary step to have a say in what happens to your future. The earth is going through many changes that are proven to be detrimental, and as we are to inherit this land, isn’t it fair that we have a chance to voice what we think will help, and create a healthy environment to live in?
The Importance of Voting - By Isobelle With the Federal Election being held this upcoming Saturday, it’s time to talk about voting. As the minimum age in Australia is 18, generally only Year 12 students will be affected. However it is just as important to prepare young adults before this time and to educate them on the importance of voting. The Australian government holds elections as a part of our democratic society, to have the population decide on who is best to represent their area, voice and lead the country as a whole. For years, voting has been a symbol of freedom and empowerment, a blessing which often isn’t recognised or appreciated by this country’s younger generations. Voting hasn’t always been so available, women were only legally allowed to join their male counterparts around 1900, the earliest being 1895 in SA to 1908 in Victoria.
Primary Athletics The NSWPSSA Athletics Championships will be held from Wednesday 6 – Thursday 7 November. As this falls after the SSA Championship (18 - 23 September) a NSWPSSA Team will not be named after this event. Selection Trials - 2019 NSWPSSA Athletics Representative Team Date: Thursday 8 August Venue: Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, Homebush Applications close: 5pm, Wednesday 26 June, 2019 Age Eligibility: Participants must be in at least their tenth year (turning ten during the year of competition) in order to compete at a School Sport Australia Championship as per School Sport Australia policy. There are no events at the SSA 12 Years & Under Championships for competitors under ten or turning thirteen Application for Invitation to the NSW PSSA Selection Trials for the 2019 School Sport Australia Track & Field Championships. This trial is not for participation at the NSWPSSA State Athletics Championships held on 6 and 7 November 2019. Students will need to qualify for these championships through their school and association representative pathway.
