A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Just have a go! One of the great strengths of our College is the extensive co-curricular programs which are available to all our students. When we think about co-curricular it includes the sports program with summer and winter options, the performing arts programs with music groups, musicals and drama performances, public speaking and debating, the agricultural program with experiences such as the Cattle Team, the equestrian program and increasingly the opportunities to serve in the social justice program. All of these programs and experiences have their foundations in the core academic program of the College, such as English, Music, Drama, PDHPE, Agriculture, Science, TAS and Visual Arts (etc). It is in the co-curricular experience where these formal skills are brought to life, where we often see the relevance of what we learn in class and experience the satisfaction and fun of putting all those pieces together. It has been wonderful to see so many of our children, across the age groups K-12, re-engaging with enthusiasm and passion in so many of these co-curricular activities to their great benefit. Senior School Campus Senior, Boarding (Years 7-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

We have reported in earlier editions of The Roar on such activities as Matilda – the Musical, 2022 Cattle and Sheep teams, the Equestrian competition, Sports activities, and others. Tomorrow night brings hundreds of students together in an outstanding 2022 Music Showcase at BMEC! Another wonderful opportunity for students to show their skills and talents. I encourage all students to get involved in co-curricular activities which interest them. There are many, with new options being developed for the future. As I said at assembly last week, our unofficial motto is: “Just have a go!”

2021 Yearbook The 2021 Yearbook will be sent home with your eldest child, 1 per family on the last week of Term 3. If you wish to purchase an additional copy they are $55 and can be purchased at front Reception Junior and Senior Campus eftpos or cash.

Hope Care: packing emergency hampers

hampers as well as family hampers. My hope is that students may emotionally and spiritually connect with this act of service and realise that they are involved in blessing many in our community who are doing it tough. Amen.

One of my favourite Bible verses is 1 John 3:17. In the ‘Message’ Translation it reads: “If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God’s love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.” I find the weight of those words both inspiring and also challenging. We are tasked with being the hands of God in every situation. Last Friday, I was fortunate enough to see God’s hands at work through the efforts some of our Year 6 students. Mr Jackman, students from 6N, and myself travelled over to Hope Care in Kelso. The students acted as my ‘guinea pigs’ to trial a new program that will start next term – packing emergency hampers for the poor, homeless, lonely and isolated. These hampers shall be distributed to families and individuals in the Central West through various agencies like Hope Care, Uniting Care, Anglicare, the Salvation Army and other similar charities. Our students were tasked with working solidly for an hour to see how many hampers they could pack. We arrived at Hope Care at 10.45am. The students started packing the various hampers with various items for three days’ worth of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners – i.e. Spaghetti, long-life milk, cereals, tea and coffee, and a variety of tin meals, etc. They worked extremely hard and within half an hour had packed 23 hampers. This was unbelievably fast. Sadly for me, I had allocated an hour of time, so Mr Jackman and I had to find half-an-hour of activities to keep the students occupied. Next term, this service activity shall see one class across Years 3 to 6 heading to Hope Care each Friday to pack around 30 to 35 emergency single person

Police Visit During Week 7, Senior Constable Joyce from NSW Police visited the Junior School Campus to speak to our classes, from Kindergarten to Year 6, about safety. The focus of the presentation for Stage 2 and Stage 3 students was the ways students can be Cyber Safe with their use of the internet (social media/ messaging/online gaming) and mobile phones. It was a terrific chance for all the students to hear about their responsibilities when using this technology, and we hope to get Senior Constable Joyce back to our campus for a Parent and Carer Information Evening in Term 3, so we can share the message of Cyber Safety with our College families. Briefly, here are the main points from the session held for Stage 3: • No-go zones: don’t use your phone/computer in your bedroom or bathroom • Don’t respond: if someone is sending you messages, information or making you feel continued page 5

uncomfortable, don’t respond. Tell a trusted adult who can help you deal with the issue. • Safety: only talk to people you know in reallife. Don’t share personal information about yourself or passwords. Don’t let people know where you go to school by posting photos of yourself in school uniform, don’t make ‘friends’ during online gaming and give away personal information. • You are breaking the law if you send child abuse material (even if someone else sent it to you or it is a photo of you). Reflection on Semester 1 We are almost at the end of Semester 1, and I am struck by how different this semester has been from the last couple of years. We are still dealing with the interruption of Covid and flu in our classrooms. However, it is timely to remind ourselves that in a social development and student wellbeing sense, the events of the last couple of years continue to impact our students. Within a Primary school context: • Students up to Year 2 have not experienced a full year of face-to-face learning since starting school. • During lockdown, students had far less time interacting with their peers face-to-face and participating within a social learning environment. School reports will measure academic gains and the progress and development of our students, but within the wellbeing space of schools, students continue to feel the impact of the time they spent away from their social learning environment. Many students cited that during lockdowns they felt disconnected from school, their friends and their teachers. At the College, we are trying to rebuild these positive connections in many ways both in and beyond the classroom; school discos, peer support, Bounce Back, the buddy program, House competitions, Music Showcase, to name a few. We encourage our students in the Junior School to participate in as many of these activities as they can, so they can reconnect to College life and other students and share common goals, experiences and successes.

Junior School Athletics Carnival Tomorrow we’re hitting the go button on our Junior School Athletics Carnival. The weather forecast looks good (touch wood!), and we’re looking forward to a day of good times (and jumps and throws). The fun kicks off at 10:00 am with House dances and runs through to the end of the day. Prep students will get involved at around 10:45 am and our K-1 students will hit the track at around 11:30 am. If you’re planning on coming along, please park in the carpark adjacent to Eglinton Road. Our P&F will be running a canteen so send a few coins along with the kids tomorrow morning. Championships in Cairns. The event consisted of a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike and a 42.2km run. That’s not a typo, folks! Gillmer completed the event in a time of 9 hours and 42 minutes, coming in just 9 seconds ahead of the 4th place finisher to secure a podium position. He has now qualified for the Hawaiian Ironman this October. We wish him well with his training through the Winter. By the way, Mr Gillmer has a weekly run on Tuesday mornings at 7:30 am for any students interested in coming to run club. I strongly encourage any keen beans to come along and steal his training techniques. After all, how often do you get to say you were trained by a Hawaiian Ironman! Young hoopers enjoy a whole heap of success Last weekend Charlotte Bennett (Year 7) and Sian Campbell (Year 7) competed at the John Martin Country Tournament as part of the Bathurst Goldminers U14 Girls Basketball Team. The team worked hard to remain undefeated in their round, quarter-final and semi-final games, to eventually take out the U14 Div 3 Grand Final in a hard fought 27-24 win over Goulburn. To make it all the way to the big dance, the girls had wins over Canberra, Newcastle, Shoalhaven, Orange, Illawarra, Canberra 1, and Queanbeyan. Not a bad way to spend a long weekend I say!

House Debating Competition House Debating has returned to Scots All Saints College in 2022 with eager orators from all five houses; Mawson, Cowan, Cuthbert, Booth and Dunlop, representing their peers with confidence and conviction. The format of the competition saw individual speakers assigned a topic and case that they had to argue in 3 minutes in front of an audience of their peers. The competition was held in two sessions on Thursday, 16 June, with our Year 12 speakers; Dusty Fitzpatrick, Jack McCudden, Riley Monico, Sophie Porter and Alexander Jonker, opening the competition. Each speaker presented their ideas with clarity and passion, and they canvassed some very interesting ideas on topics ranging from the de-platforming of public figures on social media to the role of

Olivia Carmody, Chido Mutyiri, Eliza Rennie, Jamie Healy and Heidi Matthews spoke with poise and precision, presenting their thoughtful arguments to the audience. Mrs Davis adjudicated the competition to determine the winning house on the day, with the victory going to Mawson. All speakers are to be congratulated on their participation and excellent presentations. EIGHTY YEARS OF THE SCOTS COLLEGE BRANCH SCHOOL

The third in a series of articles commemorating the 80th anniversary of the establishment of The Scots College Branch School. The staff who arrived at The Scots College Branch School had all left Bathurst by the end of 1942. Matron Rivers became ill with pneumonia. The teacher in charge, Mr Hedley “Zac” Palmer, joined the Air Force in July 1942. Miss Edna Norman, who came with the boys in April from Sydney, took charge, but she too left at the end of 1942 to get married. Her husband was a naval officer named Rhodes who was apparently involved in Coastwatch intelligence gathering. Mrs Rhodes had a long career at Scots Sydney, working there as a Prep School teacher until her retirement. The vacancy caused by Mr Palmer’s departure was filled by Miss Cortez. The Karralee Boys say, “she didn’t like us, and we didn’t like her”. She only stayed one term. From the beginning of Term 3, Mrs Daphne Singleton joined the staff. She was reputed to be able to write on a blackboard backwards. Her son John became enrolment No. 2 at The Scots School in 1946 and was the first School Captain. The Karralee Boys recall the maintenance man: Mr Spargo, who was a Bathurst local, although exactly when he started at the school is not known. The domestic staff were also local Bathurst people. During 1942, the position of Head of the Branch School was filled by the man who was to occupy it until the end of the War. Mr A. J. Coombes B.A. (1st Cl. Hons) was an elderly schoolteacher who had already retired and who supplemented his pension by baking in a pie shop. Rev. Alan Dougan found him in Sydney. Mr Coombes had a distinguished record as an educator, having written textbooks for the Department of Education and he had been Acting Rector of St. Andrew’s College in Christchurch, New Zealand. His appointment was typical of the conditions of the day. Long-time Scots teacher Howard Davoll and Mr Maher’s father were both born in the same year. Howard attended Canterbury Boys High, and Mr Maher senior went to Fort Street. Both had stories of the

schools being staffed by elderly masters who were at or past retiring age but stepped in to keep the schools running whilst the younger men were off at the War. Fort Street’s veteran Edwin Parker had been teaching for 42 years when he retired in 1948. Mr Coombes was offered the Headship of The Scots School when it opened in 1946, but having already retired from teaching once, he decided not to accept the position. There was also considerable local input from the local Presbyterian community, especially Rev. Alan Dougan. Mr Coombes convened a local committee to assist with the running of the branch school. In September 1943, this group was formalised into the Bathurst Advisory Committee, with Rev. Dougan elected as its chairman. Edwin Ray, the school’s neighbour, was a member, and some of its committee went on to join the Council of The Scots School. Unfortunately, the records of the Branch School were destroyed in a fire at The Scots College, and an official listing of other members does not exist, although it probably included Ivor Hector, Perry Taylor and Doug Trevor-Jones. This group later took up the cause of finding a Presbyterian school in Bathurst and succeeded in 1946 when The Scots School opened.
