A conversation with the Head of College

upcoming major events

Mr John Weeks

Welcome back to Scots All Saints College for the start of the 2020 academic year. A very special welcome to the 130 new students and their families who will start with us for the first time this year. We look forward to getting to know you and hope you settle into the College family quickly. It has certainly been a challenging summer for so many people with the continuing drought and the devastating bushfires. We are aware that some of our families and many of our students are affected in different ways by these issues. On behalf of the College, I want to assure you that we are focused on the continuity of each student‘s education and their sense of wellbeing. If you have any concerns where you feel we can assist, please contact my personal assistant, Catherine McDonnell for a confidential conversation so we can support you at this time. As if there wasn’t enough to deal with, the Coronavirus outbreak has put us all on high alert. As a College with International Students in our community, we have been in contact with the NSW Department of Health, which has put in place clear protocols for identifying and managing anyone with symptoms of the virus. You should have received a separate notice about this directly to your email account which outlines precautionary procedures we have put in place for our school community. As the authorities discover new information, health alerts are regularly being updated. The latest advice from NSW Health requests that students and staff who have visited mainland China and Hong Kong in the past two weeks not attend school or childcare services until 14 days have lapsed from their departure date from China. Internally our Registered Nurse, Felicity Brown will continue to manage this matter for us and will keep the community well-informed about it as we continue to ensure the safest possible environment for our College. As an additional precaution, the travel history of all our international students has been investigated and all students from overseas have been medically screened and will be closely monitored over the next few weeks. 60 Seconds with the Director of Boarding ..... What is your role at Scots All Saints College? Director of Boarding and PDHPE Teacher. What attracted you and your family to our College? The opportunity to take on the role of Director of Boarding at a time in the College’s history that is very exciting. For my daughter, who will attend the College, the Middle School was a very attractive proposition where we know she will thrive. What was your first job and what did it teach you? My first job was as a PDHPE Teacher at Covenant Christian School in Belrose, Sydney. It taught me that relationships are the key to making a positive impact in the lives of young people we have the privilege to teach. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Spending time with my wife and our two children. Who is an inspirational leader you admire? Nelson Mandela - “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” What are some exciting things happening in boarding in 2020? We have consolidated boarding into three houses. Thompson House will be the home to the Year 7-12 Boys, the Year 7-10 girls will live in Galloway House and our Year 11 and 12 girls will move into the newly renovated Ives House. With plans for the future to create a Senior boys boarding house to mirror the girls. This will allow us to best cater for the different needs of the boarding students as they move through the College. What’s your favourite sport and who do you support? As a PDHPE Teacher, I enjoy most sports but follow Liverpool in the English Premier League Football and hope that the Wallabies can improve under their new coach. ROAR THE

Senior School Mrs Tracey Leaf Head of Scots Campus / Director of Senior School & Boarding

It was wonderful this morning to see our students arriving on campus. It’s always fun to see how much our young people have grown and to hear their holiday stories. On behalf of the staff I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the Year 9 students and the new students in Years 9 to 11 who have joined us in the Senior School this year. In Assembly this morning I encouraged the students to see a new school year as the perfect time to set some academic and personal goals. Identifying areas for development and improvement (body, mind, spirit) and nurturing a growth mindset is a valuable strategy to becoming the best version of ourselves. I would also like to welcome the staff new to the Scots Campus: Mrs Lynne Woodlock will be working with the English, HSIE and Learning Support & Enrichment Departments this year, as well as running Ives House, Mr Alistair Meek joins us and will teach Agriculture and Business Studies and Mrs Jane Parkinson joins the Learning Support & Enrichment Team. We’re very grateful for the blessing of staff with knowledge and skills that benefit our students. Uniform Matters The phase-in of the new uniform continues this year. Thank you to the parents who are assisting by ensuring their children are in the correct uniform – whichever one they are currently wearing. It is important that students have a hat at school for break time and sport. I ask that parents check that their child has the appropriate College hat each day. As we continue to build our College, we are refining and developing our policies in many areas and it is important that parents and students are kept abreast of these developments. Please refer to the Senior School Handbook for the College regulations regarding jewellery and hair as some amendments were made to the requirements around the wearing of jewellery and hair styles. Parking on the Scots Campus Just a reminder that vehicles must be parked on the right hand side of the front drive. Between 8:15 am – 9:00 am, 3:15 pm – 4:30 pm the front drive is

extremely busy with buses. Cars parked on the left hand side of the drive hinder the flow of the buses and create duty of care problems for the staff on bus duty. If the front drive is full, please use the top car park. Parking on the ‘corner’ of the front drive or in the small driveway/access lane next to Karralee (reception) is not permitted. Vehicles parked in the wrong locations will be moved on. Any questions? Please feel free to contact the Year Coordinator if you have any questions. Our Year Coordinators work closely with the students in their year group and if they cannot assist, will ensure you are pointed in the right direction. ROAR THE

Co-curricular Mr Justin Adams Director of Co-curricular

We have many co-curricular opportunities for our students in 2020 and many of these resuming immediately or in the next week. We encourage our students to take advantage of the many offerings that are available and for them and their parents to seek information and registration procedures as described in the SASC 2020 Student Handbook. Some of our Co-curricular programs include: Music, Musical, Sport, Swimming Squads, Army Cadets, Rural Fire Service Cadets, Pipes and Drums, Highland Dancing, Equestrian, Cattle Team, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and our new Strength and Conditioning program and Summer Rugby program. Again, details about these programs are in the SASC 2020 Student Handbook which can be found on our website (on the starting at Scots All Saints page).

Sport Our summer sports season resumes this weekend. Please refer to sport schedules for details. We are expecting hot weather and this may impact on some fixtures. We will be under the advice of the various sporting competitions that we play in and as information is shared to us, we will communicate this to the students, coaches and parents. Students and parents are reminded to prepare for hot weather with plenty of hydration and sun protective measures. New Zealand Cricket Tour Our cricket tour to Queenstown in the last week of the holidays was highly successful, enjoyable and fun. Our students were outstanding ambassadors of our College. A full report will be presented in next week’s The Roar.
