A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

College Registration successfully completed Independent schools are inspected by the New South Wales Educational Standards Authority (NESA) to ensure compliance of educational programs, teacher registration, policies, procedures, governance, financial management, WH&S, facilities and a range of other issues which satisfy federal and state law. Scots All Saints re-registration inspection took place this week and the College was granted the maximum registration of a further five years. I wish to thank the staff of the College, teaching and non-teaching for the attention to detail in ensuring that the College is fully compliant in all areas of operation. Winter Holidays All students and staff have worked hard this term to ‘normalize operations’ after a very restrictive 2020. It’s been great to see our students involved in so many of the additional programs available whether this be in the sports, music, debating, cattle team, equestrian or outdoor education. Time for everyone to have a well-earned rest and refuel for next term. Year 12 Study Break The Winter break is a really important time for Year 12 students. There needs to be a balance between some holiday time but even more importantly catch up and preparation for the final term of schooling. Students undertaking major works or performance-based subjects must have these completed or performed by early August and the Trial Examinations, which contribute to final rankings begin in August as well. This holiday break is crucial for ultimate success at the HSC which begins in early Term 4. Mr Weeding, our Deputy Head, will be conducting important preparation seminars this Monday at the College to assist students in making the most of this three week period. I encourage all Year 12 students to be there! Until next term… Campus East (Scots) Senior School, Boarding (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

From the Chaplain Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain

A spark starts a fire! From this next story, many of you shall quickly discover that I can be, at times, absent-minded! On the weekend, Mel and I did a big tidy up. So I cleaned out the fireplace and took all the ash and coals out and dumped them next to the compost behind our shed. For the next hour or two, I spent some quality time with my wife weeding the rose garden bed. As we were chatting away, I noticed heavy black smoke climbing into the sky behind the shed. Mel and I ran down to the shed and discovered that the compost, which had piles of clippings and weeds, was alight. As flames climbed the shed wall, we both grabbed buckets and in the ensuing minutes managed to get the situation under control. What fascinated me was that the coals from the fireplace were not hot, so it seemed impossible that a fire could start, let alone start so quickly. What seemed so innocent very quickly got out of control and could have caused a lot of damage. As I reflected upon the event, it reminded me of James 3:5ff – “Consider that a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” What James, the Lord Jesus Christ’s brother, is explaining, is if words matter at all, words matter most! Therefore, be careful in what you say and how you communicate. He continues, to

paraphrase: “A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can inflame a friendship. By our speech we can turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation of others, ignite hatred, and ruin the world" (James 3:6). Now I agree, when you hit your thumb with a hammer, or someone cuts you off on the road, it is difficult to find the appropriate, non-offensive words! James is trying to address these situations, but also to get us to think a little deeper than just ‘reactionary’ words, such as when we lie, gossip, argue or fail to keep promises. Of course, James is not limiting our words to what we speak, but rather he is encouraging us to reflect upon all forms of communications. As we reflect, he asserts that our words reflect who we are and what we are really like at our core. Throughout his letter, James wants to remind us of the power of our words. They can build and encourage or burn and destroy. So let me encourage us all, and I include myself, not to be foolish with our language, like I was with the coals, but to think about our words and how they reveal who we are as individuals. Blessings to your all. Amen.

Semester One Student Reports Yesterday you would have received your child’s Semester One report. We trust that the report will provide you with a thorough overview of your child’s progress and our teachers look forward to discussing the report in further detail at the parent-teacher interviews. Happy Memories from Term 2 Students have enjoyed many fun and engaging activities in recent weeks. Following the launch of our Innovation Centre, our students had a fantastic time with their dance lessons and also at the Footsteps Disco. The ‘fluro glow’ theme sure was a hit! More recently students benefited immensely from the Literature Festival sessions with a range of guest authors and illustrators and despite a brief rain intervention it was awesome to see so many Junior School students joining in and trying their best at our Junior School Athletics Carnival. Personal Research Project I’ve seen some amazing work on display in all the classrooms as part of our Personal Research Project. The students love the opportunity to learn about a specific area of interest and show off their learning to others. I’d like to congratulate all the students on their effort throughout the term.

Seussical the Musical Last Friday at our assembly we announced that our Junior School Musical for 2021 will be Seussical the Musical. Whilst Year 4 will take on many of the lead roles, all of our Junior School students will begin to work on specific items for this event in Term 3. The musical will be presented to parents and friends on Thursday, 28 October.

Happy holidays I would like to wish everyone a safe and restful holiday. The holidays are a perfect opportunity to ‘slow down’ for a few weeks, to gain some much needed rest and to give thanks for the many opportunities and experiences we are fortunate enough to have. School resumes on Monday, 12 July.

Holidays What a busy term we have had! Visits from Bricks for Kids and Lumination in the Innovation Centre. The Literature Festival, Footsteps Dance Company lessons, the Disco, just to name a few of the exciting activities students have been involved in this term. Everyone deserves a well-earned rest over the holidays and I look forward to seeing the students back, refreshed and ready for an exciting Term 3. Term 3 classes start on Monday, 12 July. Innovation Centre Over the past week we have had the audio system installed in the Innovation Centre. The students have begun using the Centre for a range of activities and are loving the environment. The Official Opening of the Innovation Centre will be on Tuesday, 13 July where we will have Honorable Mr Andrew Gee (Member of Calare) and Mr Bruce Clydesdale (College Foundation) coming to open the Centre.

As the Stage 3 students and teachers reach the conclusion of Semester 1, it is a perfect time to reflect on all we have achieved this semester and practice gratitude for all that we have in our lives. Studies have found that people who practice gratitude report fewer symptoms of illness, including depression, more optimism and happiness, stronger relationships, more generous behaviour, among other benefits (Greater Good Science Centre, Berkeley University of California). continued page 6

An effective way of starting the practice of gratitude is for students to reflect on their own strengths and interests, as an awareness of these allows us to feel more socially competent and connected. In Stage 3, we encourage our students to consider their own strengths and interests and via our pastoral care program, and, as the students receive their Semester One reports and complete their own evaluations of the semester, we encourage them to consider what has given them a sense of achievement. We look forward to sharing these reports with our Stage 3 families early in Term 3, for parent, teacher, student interviews.

Mrs Jo Nicholl, Stage 3 Coordinator The end of term is nigh, and this will bring to close a very busy but full term for all students and teachers in the Middle School. The past fortnight has seen the middle school a hive of activity; this has included the Literature Festival, Footsteps dance group, the disco and the athletics carnival all on top of the everyday things that happen in classes. Stage 4 The Literature Festival had many components to encourage and engage the students throughout the week. The students could elect to do an illustration and or creative writing workshop with the authors and the whole stage group where given the opportunity to talk in a Q&A session with one of the authors. The return of the Footsteps dance group and having a disco was an excellent opportunity for the students to have some fun dancing and getting some normality back to school social life. All students and teachers were provided with dance lessons leading up to the disco on the previous Friday night. The disco was an excellent success in terms of participation and student involvement with all the dancing on the night. The year group has also been busy throughout the term with the Wellness program during their core group classes. This term has seen the students explore the themes of ‘Dealing with difficult people’, ‘assertiveness’ and ‘Empathy’. These units help build,

The term has finished well and I commend the students for the way they returned after the long weekend. They got straight back to work on Tuesday and made the most of the final teaching days prior to the mid-year break. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the Year 10 students for the way they approached their exams this week. Their mindset was outstanding and many expressed optimism as to their performance after each exam. Stage 6 Study Day As outlined in the last The Roar, it is important Year 11 and 12 students consider the break as an opportunity to get ready for their exams next term. To assist with some study techniques, there will be a workshop on Monday, June 21, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Boarders will have an opportunity to join in through a Zoom link. Students who intend to participate must register their interest with Mrs Norris. Stage 5 Reports for both Year 9 and 10 will be emailed home today. Year 10 student/parent/teacher interviews will occur on 19, 20 and 21 July. Students are encouraged to actively participate in these interviews. Mrs Norris has already sent out details regarding booking an appointment online. This will be followed by an information evening for selection of Year 11 subjects on Tuesday, 27 July. More details about this evening will be sent in a separate communication from Mr Jones. All the best for a well-earned break. All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator

It’s been a short week but a big week on Campus West with our Junior and Middle School carnivals taking place in, you guessed it, freezing conditions. It has been unreal to see our students take to the track and field with unbelievably awesome attitudes and amazing sportsmanship – a few College records were broken along the way too which is always nice. We’ll announce all our winners and age champions in our next The Roar report and award medals in an upcoming assembly.

Congratulations to our entire team of AICES representatives: Todd Nelson, Miller Rivett, Jake Kearney, Emily Bennett, Amelia Craft, Lucy Tallentire and Lucy Bennett. Netball Our WAS Opens Netball representatives travelled to Netball Central at Homebush on Tuesday to compete in the AICES Open Netball Carnival. After an awesome day of netball against some brilliant competition, our very own Mia Baggett was selected in the AICES team. Shout out to Lucy Proctor, Jorja Hazel, Lauren Cant, Grace Evans, Holly Stokes and Tilly Proctor. Here’s a happy snap of our WAS representatives rubbing shoulders with Giants Goal Keeper, Sam Poolman.

A massive thank you to all the amazing parents who fought off frost bite and volunteered their time to rake long jump pits, push stopwatch buttons and answer the question on a million occasions, “Excuse me, what time did I get?” We really couldn’t have done it without you. CIS Cross Country Last Thursday, our CIS Cross-Country runners took to the track at Sydney Motorsport Park. They packed a little Bathurst weather with them for the trip, as Sydney experienced its coldest day in 37 years. It all worked in our favour with our runners posting some amazing results. Here’s a few of the highlights: - Todd Nelson 1st in the Multi Class 16 Years Boys - Miller Rivett 4th in the 15 Years Boys - Jake Kearney 10th in the 10 Years Boys - Emily Bennett 13th in the 14 Years Girls.

MOST RECENT ADDITIONS TO THE SCOTS MUSEUM

Back in 2004, Mrs Kinleyside’s Year 1 class made a quilt. Each member of the class cut out a piece of fabric the shape of their hand, and it was sewn on to the quilt, along with their initials. Time rolled on until 2015, when the littlies were considerably larger and finishing their schooling. They thought it would be a good idea for the students of 2004 who were still at the school to have their photo taken with the quilt, that had been hanging up all this time in a corridor in the Junior School.

Photo of year 1 2004 with quilt features: Nicholas Thompson, Luke Newman, William Brancourt, Zoe Behrendt and Aiden Telfser.

Following the integration of Scots and All Saints, Mrs Kinleyside made sure that the quit was safe, and earlier this year, after visiting The Scots Museum, she decided that was the best place for the quilt to be kept. There was a spare spot for it on the wall next to a display cabinet that a Year 6 class had donated to the Junior School, and which now serves as a showcase for Junior School memorabilia.

HICES Debating Round Four

Tuesday, 8 June saw debaters from Years 5-11 travel to Kinross Wolaroi School to compete in the final preliminary round of HICES Debating. The Year 12 debate was conducted over Zoom, minimising disruption for our Year 12s at this critical stage in their HSC studies. Mrs. Jo Nicholls and Mr Andrew Maher accompanied the students and were impressed with their exemplary behaviour on the day. The Year 5 team of Twiggy Thompson, Georgia Rennie, Emily Nicoll and Lara Kearney debated Blue Mountains Grammar School and were very excited to secure their first win of the debating season. The Year 6 team consisting of Charlotte Bateman, Nolan Stafford, Lydia Brown and Lezaan Schwartz performed admirably on the day but were bested by Kinross Wolaroi School in their debate. The Year 7 team of Eliza Rennie, Suhaila Murshed, Jake Robinson and Grayson Jacobsen and the Year 8 squad; Deliah Wu, Tyler Copson, Angus Dowton and Bella Irvine suffered losses at the hands of Blue Mountains Grammar School and Macquarie Anglican Grammar School, respectively. Both teams are to be commended on the way in which they have grown in confidence over the course of the competition. Year 9, represented by Eloise Fairley, Hannah Howes, Jai Valabjee and Elizabeth Walsh acquitted themselves

admirably but were ultimately defeated by Kinross Wolaroi School. Their Year 10 counterparts Luke Woodhead, Emily Brown, Ella Kay and Kitty Sharpham were narrowly defeated by a worthy set of opponents from Blue Mountains Grammar School. The Year 11 team of Alexandra Strutt, Hannah Lambert, Dusty Fitzpatrick and Rebecca Howes championed their team’s case valiantly but were unable to overcome the opposition they met in Blue Mountains Grammar School. The Year 12 Zoom debate saw our thus far undefeated squad square off against a formidable opposition from Kinross Wolaroi School and in a closely contested round, our team of Simi Atluri, Jonah Siede, George Butler and Callum DuncanKeen were narrowly defeated. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Nicholls and Mr Maher for their assistance on the day and throughout the course of these preliminary debates. Special thanks and mention are also due to Ms Christine Sams who coordinated the Zoom debate for Year 12, enabling them to uphold their commitments in this round of the competition. I would also like to acknowledge the enthusiasm and dedication of all those students who have participated in the first stage of HICES Debating this year. We wait now to receive the final results that will determine if any of our teams will be progressing to the next stage of the competition. Mrs Angela Davis
