A conversation with the Head of College
upcoming major events
Mr John Weeks Thank you to all those members of the College community who gave my wife Denise and I such a warm welcome to Scots All Saints this week. We are delighted to be a part of the College community and we are very much looking forward to working with you in the future. During the week, I have had the opportunity to address students at both Scots and All Saints campuses. It was a chance to get them thinking about having some goals and 'dreaming big' for their future. There were two words that I asked them to think about: YET and GRIT. You see, many people young and old alike have a fixed mindset and believe if they can’t do something now, then they never will. Actually, many students give up too early and too easily rather than understanding they are just not there YET. I gave the students the example of Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon. It took until the 11th Apollo mission for this feat to happen because they weren’t YET developed. What enabled that achievement was GRIT, perhaps even more so than knowledge and intelligence. It’s about that passion and drive to achieve goals and being mentally tough to keep going. My challenge to our students is to consider what they want to achieve. I ask them what passion might you pursue, what interests and skills do you want to develop? My assurance to them is that with GRIT – determination, ongoing hard work, by pushing on against the setbacks and disappointments, they can achieve amazing things. This term is a very important time for our Year 12 students with trial examinations. They are not there YET; they are still finishing their course work. This is where GRIT comes in; time to be fully focused, positive and determined. To dream the dream is easy but it takes courage, hard work and perseverance to turn it into a reality.

Scots All Saints Gold Lion Ball postponed
Today’s Reflection Mr Samuel Gittins Chaplain
Is anything too hard for the Lord? The Lord told Abraham that his ninety-year-old wife would bear him a son and Sarah, listening nearby, laughed the rueful wishful laughter of someone who had already resigned herself to missing out. Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Genesis 18:13-14 [NLT-SE] A year later Sarah held her new son and named him ‘laughter.’ God always keeps His promises; no promise is too hard for the Lord.

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of the College Community, After careful consideration and discussion with staff, parents, past students and the College Council, it has been decided to postpone the inaugural Scots All Saints Gold Lion Ball and reschedule it for another time. It seems the timing is not quite right considering the upcoming Higher School Certificate examinations, financial concerns with the ongoing drought, and other prominent social events for our families on the College calendar. We have the Spring Fair on Sunday, 8 September, the next Parent Weekend on the All Saints Campus and the Valedictory Ball for Year 12 students at the end of Term 3. For those people who got in early to show support and purchase tickets, thank you. Please be assured, the College will fully refund the costs associated with your online ticket purchase. Thank you also to my team of helpers working diligently behind the scenes. I thank you for your efforts and enthusiasm. The intention of the Gold Lion Ball is to engage our Old Boys and Girls with our current and past families and staff, to showcase the musical talents of our current students and to build friendships within the College community. We will inform you as soon as a more appropriate date has been set for 2020. If you would like to be involved with the organising of the Scots All Saints Gold Lion Ball, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs Belinda Boshier – Ball Coordinator

Hopefully our Premier’s Reading Challenge students were able to read some additional books during the holiday break and edge closer towards completion. Student Reading Records need to be completed by August 30! Please record all books online before this date and try not to leave it to the last minute to avoid delays due to heavy website traffic.

Middle School Mr Chris Jackman Head of All Saints Campus / Director of Middle School
Welcome Mr John Weeks – Head of College I would like to warmly welcome Mr John Weeks as our new Head of College and Mrs Denise Weeks to our wonderful College community. Mr Weeks has been working as a consultant assisting with the amalgamation of the schools over the past 12 months. John has built a deep understanding of where we have come from and more importantly, a great vision of where we are going, bringing extensive knowledge and expertise in leading schools in regional areas and most recently in Sydney. Mrs Weeks has also been working with our past students and archives team to ensure the history of both schools is preserved and honoured for the future generations. I look forward to working with Mr Weeks and see a very bright future for our new College under his leadership. New students I am pleased to welcome four new students to the Middle School this term; Maggie Rosewarne (5M), Lok Yiu Lam (6H), Masahiko Iizuka (7P) and Molly Duffell (8W). Please look out for them and make them feel welcome. Winter Sport The Winter Sport program continues with training having started this week. Students should ensure that they advise their coach well before game day if they cannot play due to a family function or due to illness. Jump Rope for Heart This year our students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH). This Friday we have a representative from JRFH, Alex Fernandez, coming to speak to the students and build some enthusiasm for the program ahead. Alex will be engaging the students in a 20 minute interactive health talk where he will discuss heart health, the importance of exercise and healthy eating, explain the fundraising and how our fundraising efforts support their cause. The students will begin the skipping program here at Scots All Saints during Week 3 (Daily Burst) and in PE lessons. Mrs Nelson will send more information about the program out to parents in Week 3. Macquarie Care Centre This term Year 6 students will have a turn at visiting Macquarie Care Centre to assist the residents with their weekly Bingo games. Each week, I take 8 students to Macquarie Care Centre on the school bus. A permission note will be sent home via CareMonkey seeking parents’ permission to participate in this program to build connections with our community. This is a special program our College has developed over many years and the residents always look forward to the visits from our students. Jeans for Genes Day Next Friday 2 August all students in the Middle School are invited to wear a pair of jeans to school with the rest of their school uniform and donate $2 as part of Jeans for Genes Day. Jeans for Genes was established in 1994 by the Children’s Medical Research Institute to fund revolutionary research that helps diagnose, understand, and find cures or treatments for conditions affecting children, including genetic diseases, cancer and epilepsy. This is an initiative by our Year 8 Leaders who have nominated this program as a worthwhile cause for the student body to support. Assembly Roster T3 2019 Week

Welcome to Term 3 Holidays are a great time for students, families and teachers to relax, unwind and reconnect and it has been great to hear some of the stories of what students did in their holidays. One young man, who will remain nameless (but he knows who he is!) seems to have grown another ten centimetres in just three weeks! I remember well the challenge of keeping food up to teens enjoying a growth spurt! It’s wonderful to have our students and staff back safely. On behalf of the staff, I extend a warm welcome to the new students and families who have joined our learning community for the start of Term 3. We’re delighted that you have chosen Scots All Saints College and look forward to working with you in the care and education of your children. If you have any questions, please feel most welcome to contact us. Important Dates I would encourage students and parents to keep an eye on their calendars as assessment tasks and events have a way of creeping up. Life Guard Training / Teacher of Swimming Training Our Life Guards will complete their training next week and sit their examination. The students who have registered for the Teacher of Swimming Training commence this Friday afternoon. We are appreciative that students have taken up the opportunity to gain qualifications which will benefit them in perhaps getting part time work during the holidays and for developing skills that are beneficial to them and to our community.
Winter Sport We trust that students and families enjoyed the recent break from school and sport. We are back into training and have games this weekend. A big thank you to the students who were able to play matches on the final weekend of last term. It was much appreciated as we did not have to forfeit matches as we had students willing to travel back or stay in town a little longer and other students fill in for other teams.

Interschools Horse Extravaganza On 27 June to 1 July I represented SASC at the Interschools Horse Extravaganza (ISHE) at Tamworth NSW. This event was really fun and the setup of the whole place was pretty impressive. This event brings together private and public schools from all around the state and caters for Kindergarten to Year 12. Some of the events offered where Sporting, Jumping, Dressage, Campdrafting, Cutting and for the first time ever, ISHE held Mounted Games. Mounted Games is an event which consists of 30 different activities with only 10 chosen for each competition. It requires four of five riders in each team to compete in relay type races. For example there is a stack the containers and a bending relay. This event was one of my favorites. I competed in Campdrafting, Sporting, Mounted Games and The Working Horse Challenge. I enjoyed the Campdraft and was very pleased with my results, in which I got the cow out of the camp and around the first peg. Overall it was an excellent few days and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to ride at this event. I will definitely be returning next year. Jack Graf

Keeping your children safe when dropping off and picking up at school Here are a few things you can do to help keep your children and others safer during drop-off and pick-up times during the school week: • Make sure your children are fastened in the correct child car seat for their age and size and that it is fitted correctly. • Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone and look out for children who may be about. • Watch for flashing lights on buses. They let you know that there may be children crossing or about to cross the road. A 40km/h limit applies when school bus lights flash. • Always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.
All Saints Campus Pre-K, Junior School (Years K–4), Middle School (Years 5-8) 70 Eglinton Road BATHURST NSW 2795
• Drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road in your school’s designated drop-off and pick-up area. Never call out to them from across the road – they may run to you without checking for traffic. • It’s safest for children to get out of the car through the Safety Door, away from passing traffic. This is the rear footpath side door of the car.
For more information on keeping our kids safe around schools visit the parents section on safetytown.com.au

The competition is open to all NSW students and they must write an imaginative piece of up to 500 words, using an image for inspiration. Each school is allowed a single entry per Stage. This year we asked Mrs Cath Dundon to judge the best entry for us to submit to NESA from Stage 3.
The following students should be congratulated for their efforts in taking up the challenge to write for the competition, an activity they completed in their own time; Lily Gray, Eliza Rennie, Ruby Thorne and Natalie Cooney. Mrs Dundon chose Natalie Cooney’s entry, titled The Hat, as our school entry. Good luck to Natalie, we will wait to hear how she goes. If you would like to read Natalie’s winning entry, click here
The Hat
Sarah Williams, an average girl in her twenties pushes her sandy blonde hair behind her ear, rolls off her covers and slips into her dressing gown. She walks downstairs and makes herself breakfast - eggs and toast. Suddenly her phone starts vibrating in her pocket, she puts it against her ear and answers. “Hello?” she pauses and then speaks again “I’ll be right there!” Sarah slips a blue shirt and pants over her body, shoves a blue cap on her head and rushes out the door. Her brows furrow as she gets into the car. The sirens wail as she drives down the street at a speed that sends dirt and rocks flying into the sky and fills the street with confused faces. She slams her car door closed as she runs towards the scene. Two men are getting carried off in stretchers and three women sit on the side of the street crying. She crouches down and shushes the women telling them to hide behind a nearby bush. “Sshh,” she says to the women “you have to stay here, you can’t let him see you.” She then goes inside the building wearing her bullet proof vest and holding out her gun protectively. “Come any closer and the girl’s gone for good” says a scruffy looking man pointing one gun at a girl’s head and the other in the direction of Sarah’s face. She stretches her gun out further, sweat drips off her nose and forehead. Not wanting to harm even this criminal, she shoots his gun out of his hand and waits for the other cops to wrestle him into the back of the police car. The tension leaves the room as the man is driven away. As Sarah walks outside holding the hand of the scared little girl the three women run towards her thanking her and hugging their niece and daughter. “Thank you!” the women say. “When we saw the ransom note we thought that we would never see her again.” Tears stream from the girl’s eyes and they walk away into their car. A group of policemen come towards Sarah and thank her. For saving the girl. For comforting the women. For shooting the man’s gun. For doing her job. The sunset reflects in the mirror as she drives home. She opens the front door, walk upstairs to her bedroom and changes out of her uniform. Now that Sarah’s job is done she sits on the couch, kicks off her shoes, takes off her hat and becomes an ordinary girl again. Natalie Cooney

Technology and English At the end of last term students in Year 7 and Year 8 English classes were immersed in innovative literary experiences through the world of technology. Year 7 students developed their visual literacy skills and enjoyed Shaun Tan’s picture book, The Lost Thing. Year 7 students were able to view a live stream of Shaun Tan being interviewed at the Opera House. He discussed his life, motivation and some of the universal themes of his books. He mentioned The Red Tree, Arrival, Cicada, The Rabbits and The Lost Thing and the students were able to see a clip from the film, The Lost Thing. Shaun Tan also offered many important life messages about patience, perseverance, how to handle rejection, identity, collaboration and self-belief. Year 8 students investigated online, multimodal and interactive texts in order to appreciate their power to communicate ideas and tell stories. This was in response to a growing focus on the importance of digital texts and the changing nature of stories and storytelling. The students • investigated Zen Pencils, a series of online comics created by Gavin Taun • viewed a Ted Talk which explained the thrilling potential of Sixth Sense Technology • appreciated multimodal responses to poetry, including a student’s analysis of A Noiseless Patient Spider by Walt Whitman • participated in the SBS Simulation Game, Asylum: Exit Australia which enhanced their empathy for refugees as they personally experienced the journey of a refugee • examined excerpts from the Award winning puzzle-platformer adventure video game, Never Alone. This game pairs world class game makers with Alaska Native storytellers and elders to create a game which delves deeply into the traditional lore of the Iñupiat people of Alaska • created their own multimodal website on Wix. com • crafted written personal responses and reflections based on digital texts

• composed an imaginative and discursive text relating to technology On Wednesday 26 June, as an exciting finale to their study of digital texts, students had a VR (Virtual Reality) experience of the text, Sea Prayer: a 360 illustrated film by award-winning novelist Khaled Hosseini. In this story “Hosseini commemorates the second anniversary of the death of a three-year-old Syrian refugee with an illustrated story animated in a virtual reality film. The night before a potentially fatal journey, a father reflects with his son on their life in Syria before the war – and on their unknown future.” The students really enjoyed this experience which was very powerful and thought provoking.
