A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
The Commonwealth Games I have really enjoyed watching our young athletes compete at Birmingham in the Commonwealth Games. There are many things to be admired about the success; the gold, silver and bronze medals and the big smiles that go with them! Impressive as these results have been, the thought which stands out most for me are the stories behind these young people; stories of dedication, hard work, resilience to overcome all health, injury and the gratefulness towards family, coaches and friends who have assisted them to compete at such a high level. Many of these athletes are still in their teens, some just a couple of years past Year 12. I hope that as our young people make their way through school, they will be inspired to set their future goals, be dedicated and determined, make no excuses and work collaboratively with teachers, friends and family to make the best of their time at school. In life, let’s all aim for a gold medal in everything we do. With that in mind, good luck Year 12, as you begin your Trial HSC examinations next week.

From the Chaplain Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain
Humiliation and Humility This year I have been discussing leadership with the Year 12 Captains and Prefects. We’ve been using John Dickson’s book Humilitas. The book looks at the leadership of Jesus Christ, which is based on humility, and how humility was perceived in the ancient world. When we look at the humility of Jesus's leadership, we see it displayed in many forms – healing people, washing the disciples' feet, and reflected in his teaching (eg. the first must be last (Mark 9:35)). However, there is probably no better place to see the humility of Jesus's leadership than at his ultimate humiliation.
Creating Scientific Bonds with the French
Dickson points out in his book that the ancient world regarded the crucifixion as a humiliating way to die. First Century Roman philosopher Seneca wrote: Can anyone be found who would prefer wasting away in pain, dying limb by limb, or letting out his life drop by drop, rather than expiring once for all? … I think he would have many excuses for dying before mounting the cross?” If Seneca or any individual in the ancient world was transported to modern times, they would be horrified by the way we use this symbol – on war memorials, as jewellery and in churches. So what transformed the crucifixion from a symbol of humiliation and death to one of justice, love and humility? It was, of course, Jesus Christ. His noble choice of lowering himself to this humiliation, as well as bearing the wrath of God upon all sin, was what changed the cross's meaning and transformed it into a symbol of hope. Thus humiliation became humility. The Apostle Paul explains these ideas of Christ’s humility and sacrificial love as examples we should follow in response to his love for us. We are called to live humble lives in the service of others – Philippians 2:3-8: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!” Jesus Christ, his humble leadership and life are a tough act to follow. But through the power of the Holy Spirit and our humble acknowledgement of Jesus as God's saviour, we are called and empowered to follow his example of living. Amen

Bonjour Bathurst never misses an opportunity to interview French speakers. A visit to the French Embassy was a dream come true, and a means to create a cultural bond. This week’s episode takes us into the world of Jules David, a remarkable character who grew up in Lyon, studied Engineering in Switzerland, has worked on various engineering projects around the world and speaks six languages. In May 2022, he was appointed as a Science and Higher Education Officer at the French Embassy. What was intriguing for us all was the realization that you don’t need to be a Career diplomat to work in an embassy. An expert in your domain that is desired by the embassy is all that is required. Bonjour Bathurst Team 2022 Watch it here first on ‘Bonjour Bathurst’, our very own French TV program.

Stage 3 debating Last week we commenced our first round of Interhouse debating in Stage 3. Once the students overcame some early nerves, they had a chance to see the formal and structured format of a debate and are starting to develop their skills in this arena. The Stage 3 teachers have been really impressed with the teamwork shown by the Year 5 and 6 students, and of particular note is the leadership role the House Captains are taking in helping to organise the members of their houses. The students have identified that preparation as a team is critical in debating successfully, and once Year 5 returns from their trip to Canberra, we will begin to prepare for Round 2.
Year 5 Excursion to Canberra As you read this, our Year 5 students are touring Canberra, visiting Parliament House, National Archives, Australia Botanic Gardens, National Museum, Questacon, Dinosaur Museum and the Royal Australian Mint. I am on the trip with them, and it has been a pleasure taking such a wonderful group of students away on an overnight excursion. Visual Art students Canberra excursion On 4 and 5 August, Visual Arts students went to Canberra to visit the National Portrait Gallery and the National Art Gallery. On the first day, we spent time attending gallery tours and talking about different elements of art as well as the techniques utilised to make the various artworks they had on exhibit. We visited Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works, as well as paintings by numerous well-known and diverse painters. As a fun treat, the art students played mini golf and went skating. We went to Canberra's National Arboretum the following morning. We learned about the origins of certain native artefacts from our guide. During the hands-on portion of our final art tour, we had the opportunity to sketch various pieces of artwork throughout the gallery. It required the art students to analyse 3D shapes, shadows and how light affects the object more closely, and helped them build a deeper understanding of shape and proportions. To complete our art excursion, we walked through the sculpture and land art exhibit outside the gallery. Overall, it was a very interesting and engaging experience. LET US NOT FORGET THE GIRLS! NETBALL AT ALL SAINTS’ AND MARSDEN. With the Bathurst Netball season close to the Grand Finals, we thought it would be an idea to pay tribute to the many Netball teams from both Marsden and All Saints’ who have continued to play in the Bathurst Competition from the early days. The first team we have a record of is from our Marsden archives in 1937 when the game was Girls’ Basketball, as the goal post held a basket, not a net in place. The ball was made of leather, so it did not cope with the wet winters of Bathurst and became very heavy enough to break a finger or two! Girls at Marsden chose either Hockey or Netball as their winter sport, and that was the only time they were able to leave the school premises to go into town on Saturday afternoon.
From 1976 on, Netball became a major girls’ sport at All Saints’ from one team in the town competition to more than twelve teams from All Saints’ across all divisions, and many came away as Grand Finalists in their different divisions. The teams would not be as successful without their devout coaches, and many can remember their coaches such as Tessa Jones, Kay Wilson, Margaret Stamp, Ann Gribble, Cassandra Pearce (Ex-First X11 1998), Rob King, Sue King, Trevor Press, Glenda Isbister, Sandy Tucker, Natalle Sutton, even Headmaster Dr. Tim Wright! There were many others in the school family who would spend winter afternoons and Saturday in the freezing cold encouraging their teams to “pass, defend, shoot”!
inter-school competitions were all part of the Netball scene, and many girls were selected to play in one or all of these competitions during the season. Today Netball at school continues to be a popular winter sport, and there are still a number of SASC teams playing in the town competition. We wish all of the team's success this year and hope they continue to enjoy the game and play after they leave school!
Each coach had their own style of coaching, from a walk along the river discussing tactics or other topical things, attending strenuous fitness programs or having ice cream at Annies’, but without doubt, they helped their teams to grow to love the game.
