A conversation with the Head of College

upcoming major events

Mr John Weeks

I’m often asked the question “What are the most important years of schooling?” The answer of course is all of them! Having said that, it is equally true that “the better the start the better the finish!” Children who are exposed to exciting learning experiences which promote their curiosity and sense of adventure in caring and supportive environments develop and retain a desire to learn all their life. So what do those exciting leaning experiences need to look like in the modern era? Take it as a given that basic skills “in reading, literacy and numeracy are significant skills to master early but we now need to add to this the ‘new basics’ like collaboration, communication, problem solving and creativity.” Social and emotional training, where we teach skills and attitudes to develop qualities like confidence, independence, appreciation and resilience, creates positive communities of learners which is essential. Active learning in safe, challenging and interactive environments should do more than just develop physical agility. Active learning also builds team work; provides experiences for planning, designing, creativity and self-expression. Stimulating curiosity through science and technology based learning, develops awareness, knowledge, and understanding of how things work. All of the above needs to happen as early as possible so that young minds and bodies are switched on and stay switched on. Many of these things are already happening in our Early Years program for Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2. In 2020, these programs will be enhanced even further with new programs and new resources. continued page 2

A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Our award winning ‘Bounce Back’ program will move into the next stage under the ongoing leadership of Dr Paula Robinson to support the social and emotional development of our children. Expanded play/learning areas, an animal nursery and mini farm will provide an enhanced learning experience. A dedicated expressive arts program of music, drama, dance and visual arts will round out this area. And finally, for now, our budding inventors, creators, and analysts will be nurtured in our new STEM programs. Our children are part of an exciting world where knowledge, information and communication is available at the touch of a button. Our approach to Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 experiences plan to be just as exciting so that our children have the best start possible.

Today’s Reflection Mr Samuel Gittins Chaplain

God has spoken. Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. Hebrews 1:1 [NLT-SE] We need not wonder what God is like, who He is, or what He requires. We look to Jesus.

P&F Meeting date change Due to the Spring Fair, the date for the next Main P&F meeting will be week 8, 11 September.

SASC SPRING FAIR 2019

We are really looking forward to offering an abundance of wonderful produce and plants at our 2019 Spring Fair!

Contributions of plants, seedlings and fresh or preserved produce would be wonderful! With over a month to until the Spring Fair, there is plenty of time to get something ready to contribute. Potting up seedlings or succulents, making jams, chutneys, producing oils, vinegars or any gourmet delights produced by our school community will be much appreciated! Fresh produce like eggs, freshly picked fruit and vegetables are most welcome! Scots Campus Pre-K, Boarding (Years 5-12), Senior School (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

ROAR THE

Youth Deputy Mayor for Bathurst Youth Council What does your role involve? As Youth Deputy Mayor for the Bathurst Youth Council, I have a role that comes along with lots of responsibilities. I work alongside the Bathurst Youth Mayor, Jack Lynch, the Youth Development & Community Events Officer, Dianne Jarman and Erin Trevor-Jones, and the 12 other Youth Councillors to voice the concerns for the youth of the community, as well as preparing, organising and hosting events specifically catered to them. These events include YJAM (a music event to acknowledge and listen to the bright stars of the Bathurst musical community), Food & Flix (an outdoor cinema event) and some How-ToAdult workshops we run at TAFE for yr 10/11 students to help them develop skills that will benefit them for future independent living. I also undertake a number of other roles like assisting with tasks and supporting the Youth Mayor, chairing meetings, representing and speaking for the youth council at community functions/events/meetings, and the most important - ensuring all Youth Councillors and the rest of the young people of the Bathurst Region have an opportunity to voice their opinion. I’m not perfect, none of us are. Whether big or small, I will be a listening ear to everyone, and be courageous enough to take action when required. How were you selected? In order to get into the Youth Council, I had to hand in a resume and answer a range of questions like why I would like to be a Youth Councillor, what I beehive are the most important issues facing young people in Bathurst and some projects I would love for the Youth Council to take part in. After that, the next step towards selection was an interview with members of the Bathurst Regional Council. They asked a range of questions and went through my application with me. They were all lovely and encouraging people. Then I received a phone call to say that luckily, I have made it past the selection process and was elected as a Youth Councillor again, but for the 2019/2020 term.

All Saints Campus Pre-K, Junior School (Years K–4), Middle School (Years 5-8) 70 Eglinton Road BATHURST NSW 2795

In order to be elected into the position of Youth Deputy Mayor, I had to write and present a 2 minute speech to the Youth Council about why I should be deputy mayor. The members of the newly elected council then had to vote for who they would like to see in that position and I was chosen. It is an honour and a privilege to be the Youth Deputy Mayor and my hope for the next 12 months is to provide a space (the youth council) where the young people of Bathurst feel as though they are comfortable enough to speak up for the issues that they face and to have their voice heard. As I have said before and continue to believe, our youth today is our country tomorrow. What do you hope to achieve in your role? In my role as Youth Deputy Mayor, my main hope is to ensure that the young people of Bathurst are being heard, and that they feel as though the Youth Council is a comfortable, safe space where they are able to voice any concerns/issues/ideas that they would like. Bathurst is my home and I, among many other young people would love to see it grow and flourish into a community where many more can call it their home in years to come.

ROAR THE

I would also like to organise, plan and run events catered specifically to the youth of the region, as I know sometimes it feels like there is not much in Bathurst just for young people. Events that raise awareness for serious issues like bullying, domestic and family violence and to celebrate the young people of our wonderful community, and to connect with older and younger generations through events, like during Youth Week etc. Lastly, I would also hope to be a great role model of my amazing school Scots All Saints College, and to make everyone proud of me. I know I will continue to do my best, and hopefully be a role model to the school community and the Bathurst community, and to make my teachers, peers, school community, family and friends proud of me. I loved my experience in the Youth Council last year as a youth councillor for the 2018/2019 term, and I am so excited to once again be apart of the journey, now, alongside all the young people of Bathurst who share the same desire I have to make our community strong and catered to all age groups. Its a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you get to learn more about local council, meet new people, learn more about yourself and what you are capable of and actively participate in the community, by being a voice to the young people around you.

From there, I am able to take their issue or idea and raise it to the Youth Councillors, confidentially if need be, where we are able to discuss it and take action that will better the young people of Bathurst from there. That was probably too much information but you can change it to however it needs to be. I would also love to be apart of the promotional aspect as well. Sounds very exciting and I would love to be involved! I have been lucky to have voiced some of the All Saints' College radio ads previously as well as some other regional ads as well for youth council during me previous term as a youth councillor, so I have a bit of experience in that. Natalia Burgess ALL SAINTS CAMPUS JUNIOR LIBRARY PRESENTS

If our students have issues that they would like to raise for the Bathurst region, how do they get in touch with you or have there voice heard? If any SASC students have any issues that they would like to raise for the Bathurst Region, their first point of contact would be just by approaching me in the playground or by email, I am always here to listen to whatever issues that the wonderful students of SASC have, or if there are even any ideas for future events for the Bathurst Youth Council, I am be all ears! I am always here for all of our students and I encourage them to speak to me about anything. Our students have the idea that can shape our community for the better, and they are very informed, insightful and cooperative so they will be able to share ideas with the council. Our students should be encouraged to ask me as many questions about the youth council as possible, or to voice anything they would like to.

Athletics Carnival Thankyou to all the parents who assisted with the Canteen and BBQ at the Athletics Carnival last Thursday and to those who generously donated the yummy goodies that were sold on the day! Your support is greatly appreciated and we wouldn’t be able to run these events for the children without your help or kind donations so thank you! All containers were returned to either the Junior or Middle School offices for your collection. Thank you also to Mrs Nelson for coordinating a sensational carnival. Our Year 6 students did a fantastic job preparing the house chants with students and it was great to see the students compete so well and display such fine sportsmanship. Uniform Standards We have a lovely uniform a Scots All Saints College and it is important that all students wear the uniform with pride. At our College, we expect all students to be neat and appropriately attired at all times. Our dress and uniform policy can be found on p. 43-44 of the All Saints Campus Handbook. A few key points of note include: • Students must ensure their shirts or blouses are kept tucked-in at all times. • Students must keep their hair clean and tidy at all times and wear it in an appropriate style. • Hairstyles that involve shaving all or part of the hair or undercuts and steps are not regarded as appropriate. • Navy, blue or red ribbons only may be worn. • Girls who have pierced ears may wear one set of gold or silver studs or sleepers.

• All students must keep their fingernails short and clean and girls only may wear clear nail polish on their nails. Sport Shirts The coloured house shirts were originally printed without the school motto under the crest. For a limited time, Noone will replace these house shirts free of charge (same size) with the school motto added underneath. This offer will be available until the end of this term. Please note that this is not compulsory. Courtesy and Good manners Our Year 4 student leaders have been talking to Junior School students about how they can display courtesy and good manners to others. The students have shared lots of great ideas including opening the door for the teacher, letting other s go first in the line, saying good morning to parents and being aware of visitors to our school. THRASS Information Nights On Thursday 15 August our Kindergarten and Stage 1 teachers will be hosting a practical information night relating to our THRASS program. Our teachers will discuss some of the benefits of the THRASS methodology along with some of the activities students are doing at school and what you can do at home to support. Kindergarten parents are welcome to attend the session in Mrs Walsh’s Kindergarten room, whilst Stage 1 families are welcome to attend a session in the morning reading room in the Stage 1 wing. Both sessions will commence at 6pm and run for approximately 45 minutes. Public Speaking Students will present their final speech of the year on Monday 19 August. This week as part of their homework, students should be using their planning proforma to prepare the speech via the use of key words or images on palm cards. Next week the focus should be on delivery and ensuring a fluent, expressive and engaging delivery. Book Week Book Week is fast approaching and our librarians have organised lots of fantastic activities. Currently the students from K-2 are reading the CBCA shortlisted books and will then vote for the “Book of the Year.”

TRIAL HSC EXAMINATIONS

SENIOR SCHOOL Term 3 started well and is continuing to ‘hum along’ nicely. As I walk around the campus I am thrilled to see the high level of student engagement that is evident across a range of activities and subjects. As educators we’re working to build a culture of academic excellence in our new College. One step on our journey is to have regular conversations with the students about their learning and their goals. This practice of engaging senior students in conversations about the what, the how and the why of their learning helps students to build ownership over their choices. Ultimately this sense of ownership will pay dividends in personal confidence, increased knowledge & skills and in improved academic achievement.

The Trial HSC Exams will run throughout Week 5 and Week 6. Students have been provided with an exam timetable. PARENT-DAUGHTER EVENING Friday 16 August, 7:00 pm in the Scots Campus Dining Hall. Please come along and hear Leanne Heyward (NSW Businesswoman of the Year) speak on her career and the place of women in business and leadership.

Road safety Keeping children safe in and out of the car A child who is properly secured in an approved child car seat is less likely to be killed or injured in a crash than one who is not.

• Make it a rule that every passenger must be securely buckled into a seatbelt or child car seat before you start the car.

Children aged between four and seven years cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows, unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than seven years in a child car seat.

• Always help your child get in and out of the car through the ‘Safety Door’.

National child restraint laws require your child to be restrained in the car as follows: 0 – 6 months Approved rear-facing child car seat. 6 months – 4 years Approved rear or forward-facing child car seat.

Never leave a child of any age in a vehicle without adult supervision. Children may rapidly suffer from dehydration, heat exhaustion and organ failure if left unattended, especially on hot days. For more information on keeping our kids safe around schools visit the parents section on safetytown.com.au

4+ years Approved forward-facing child car seat or booster seat.

MUSIC SHOWCASE

145cm or taller Suggested minimum height to use adult lap-sash belt.

Congratulations to the staff and students who have been working hard in preparation for our inaugural Music Showcase next Monday evening. Please mark this event in your calendar and come along & witness the amazing talents and gifts of our students.

For more information and to find and compare a range of child car seats, visit childcarseats.com.au Here are a few things you can do to help keep your children safe in and out of the car: • Children should remain in the car until an adult opens the ‘Safety Door’. This is the rear footpath side door of the car. • A sleeping child must remain firmly buckled up while in the car. • Assist your children to buckle up – always check the seatbelt is buckled up firmly and not twisted.

Messages to share with your children • Click, clack, front and back • Always buckle up • Get in and out of the car on the footpath side

Events like the Spring Fair need support from the parent body and I urge you to get in contact with us, to let us know how you might be able to support us, in setting up, helping out on a stall or cleaning up after the event.

From the P and F Mr Lindsay Wilde P and F President

Welcome to our first column for the P and F in The Roar. It is our aim to increase the level of communications between the P and F and the College community, in order to provide updates on what is going on and any planning that may be occurring around upcoming events.

You can contact the Spring Fair Committee by emailing springfair.sascpfa@outlook.com Main P&F meeting will be week 8, 11 September. Until next week.

The P and F meets twice each term, at 5:30pm on Wednesday of Week 2 and 7. The venue alternates between The Hubert J Richardson Memorial Library on the All Saints Campus in Week 2 and The Tim Richards Pavilion on the Scots Campus in Week 7. At our meeting last week, we were delighted to welcome our new Head of College, Mr John Weeks. John comes to us with extensive experience, and we were provided with an understanding of his strategic vision for the college, not just for infrastructure, but importantly strengthening the culture, that will benefit both students and teachers. Some matters considered on the night included discussion on: - Future events, both those delivered by the College, and the P and F. - The soon to be delivered uniform survey to be issued by the uniform shop. - The future structure of the P and F. Our upcoming event is the famous Spring Fair. To be held on 8 September on All Saints Campus, it is part of the historical fabric of the College, and a popular family event for the entire Bathurst community. The event attracts thousands of people and is a great opportunity for us to show off our wonderful school, facilities and most importantly people. The P and F generously funded the purchase of the books which are specifically written and printed for students who have difficulty with reading. Students are already reading these books on a daily basis and it has added an important facet to the reading intervention program in the Middle School. Mrs Melanie Jacobsen, President of the Friends of Junior and Middle School P and F, recently attended a Middle School Assembly where she presented a small selection of the books to the Middle School Captains. Student writing The Decay of Amusement Parks Rosie the Shark Amusement Parks have been the subject of many fantasies, with revenue steadily increasing for many Theme Parks, but rapidly declining for some. There was a 6.7% decrease in revenue for Australian Amusement Parks, partly because of the Dreamworld accident, where 4 people died. The Wildlife Wonderland Park operated in Bass, Victoria. It was shut down in 2012 due to animal welfare concerns and was being managed without a license. All the animals were evacuated by the RSPCA, all but one. A dead great white shark that was being preserved in formaldehyde was left behind.

“Rosie” the shark was again discovered by Youtuber, Luke McPherson, 9 months ago. Rosie was found dead in 1998 caught in tuna fishing nets, off the coast of South Australia. Rosie had never been gutted, so unlike the majority of stuffed animals, she was rock hard. After the video of the discovery was posted many urban explorers visited the Park and trashed it. Some smashed the tank, leaking toxic chemicals and causing an environmental hazard. As the YouTube video gained more attention, Rosie became a national concern. In February 2019, Rosie was purchased by Crystal World, a

prehistoric exhibition centre and has found a new home. If the shark was left in the formaldehyde, it would have deteriorated. Rosie the Shark’s story raises many questions. Should we have stricter laws for the preservation of dead animals? What happens to abandoned theme parks? Can anybody just trespass into abandoned and dangerous areas? What happens to the forgotten? But the main question is: If this much attention was given to a dead shark, why can’t we save the living ones? Simi Atluri

Regional Youth Orchestra Last Thursday 25 July, Emma Russell (Year 12), Isabella Taylor (Year 9), and I (Oscar Stocks Year 10) went to Goulbourn to play in the Regional Youth Orchestra (RYO). Emma was selected to play first trumpet, Isabella was first violin and I, second horn. It started with a two-hour practise with all of the other talented musicians, most who have completed grade 8 on their instrument, so I was quite nervous to join such talented students. There was even a collection of first year university students. We began rehearsing two beautiful works; Finlandia, Op.26 by Jean Sibelius and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony 2. Friday was filled with five two-hour rehearsals, yes 10 hours, with half an hour breaks in-between. Saturday started with a sectionals rehearsal (e.g. Brass, woodwinds, strings etc.) before a final rehearsal before jumping onto a bus to travel to Canberra to watch the Australian World Orchestra (AWO). These amazing musicians then helped the next day in our sections on our own pieces and giving us tricks and advice along the way to help us improve. They also told us the amount they practice and how to balance it. They said that they were practicing 2 hours a day while in high school, which isn’t an extraordinary amount but doable and encouraged us to all do a similar amount each day.

We then spent the afternoon with 2 more twohour rehearsals. Monday was performance day and also the last day, we spent 4 hours in the morning doing activities at the ANU (Australian National University) including watching master classes from university teachers. We also walked through their recording studio-WOW! After 1 Million dollars to design and build, the space is beautiful. We finished this amazing weekend performing the pieces for our families. The Regional youth Orchestra moves onto Tamworth next to perfect the works. We are very excited! Oscar Stocks

Year 12 Geography Excursion On Wednesday 24 July Year 12 Geography class took a trip to the Blue Mountains as part of their HSC course. It was a beautiful and warm sunny day in the mountains and we started with a two hour guided tour through the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site with an expert from the National Parks and Wildlife Service who helped students to understand the formation, ecology and management techniques used as part of the Ecosystems at Risk module. After returning to the top of the plateau on the Scenic World Railway, students were given a fun guided tour of Scenic World as part of the Economic Activity module exploring how Scenic World operates as an ecotourism destination with global links. This included a ride on the Skyway and Cableway. The students had a fantastic day with lots of fun and are able to use their knowledge in both their upcoming assignment and also their HSC exam.
