In the movie Braveheart (1995), Mel Gibson plays the Scottish rebel named William Wallace, who is fighting for freedom from England and the oppressive control of King Edward. When Wallace is eventually captured and led towards his final end, the executioner asks him to “cry out for mercy”. Wallace, defiant to the end, remains true to his cause and shouts out “Freedom!”
The desire for freedom is at the centre of our culture, and it is at the heart of the Christian message. Often when we watch television, we are bombarded with advertising about how various products and services will help us to find the freedom we are yearning for. The definition of that freedom is rarely given because it is up to our own interpretation of the concept. Jesus Christ tuned into this concept of freedom too. He talked about having freedom from the tensions and problems of this world. In Luke 4:18, Jesus states that he has come into the world to “proclaim freedom”. Indeed, in John’s Gospel he affirms that, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (8:36). The great tension between the freedom the world offers verses that of Jesus is clearly seen in what we value and see as our purpose in life. The world advertises the pleasures and material possessions of life and says this is freedom – this will bring you happiness. Jesus says the opposite. He says: come to me all who are burdened down, and I shall give you freedom (paraphrased Matthew 11:28). I once read a great illustration by the English Anglican theologian John Stott, which goes like this: If a fisherman catches a fish and pulls it ashore and then lays it on the beach next to him, the fisherman has ‘freed’ the fish from the water, but this freedom is not in the fish’s best interest. The world offers us freedom from many things, but what are we being saved ‘to’? Will owning a bigger house make us happy? Or a better car? Maybe a luxurious holiday? Hugh Mackay, in his book The Good Life: What makes life worth living, calls this mindset the "Utopian concept". He outlines how it can never be achieved and how destructive it is for our mental health, our relationships and our Jesuschildren.offers us an alternative. He points out that the material world has very little to offer. The Gospel not only offers freedom ‘from’ the troubles and burdens of this world but also freedom ‘to’ something that we were created for – the Kingdom of God. As the 18th century preacher Jonathan Edwards once entitled one of his sermons, ‘Heaven is a world of love’. We have been created for heaven and to enjoy a relationship of love with God and other recipients of his divine mercy. Unlike the fish that finds freedom from the water, we find freedom in Christ from our troubles and for a life and future that far exceeds the advertisements of this world, a future that we were created to enjoy. Amen
Students enjoyed a visit from one of the ‘Bathurst Poets’, Sue Bowden, presenting ideas on how to construct poems from personal experiences. Students will contribute poetry to the Bathurst Poets’ next Anthology, to feature works from students in Bathurst.

The Year 5 students were wonderful ambassadors for the College on their excursion to Canberra last week. There were a lot of activities squeezed into the three days away, and we all arrived back on Friday evening very tired. The students were a pleasure to take away, and gained a great deal from the experience. School Mr Chris Jackman Head of Junior School

Kath Murdoch writes extensively about these assets in her book ‘The Power of Inquiry.’ Throughout my fortnightly section in the Roar this term, I will focus on one asset which seeks to develop students as learners both now and beyond school.
The most comprehensive reform of the NSW curriculum in three decades has commenced with new syllabus for K-2 being implemented in classrooms in 2023. K-2 English and Mathematics are the first syllabuses of the NSW curriculum reform and are key to building strong foundations for the years ahead. Key priorities from the reform include: • Building strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy • Valuing teacher professional judgement • Strengthening post school pathways. K-2 staff are working hard behind the scenes to prepare for full implementation. This week, staff have been focussing on the instructional sequence for phonic knowledge along with reviewing text requirements and use of quality literature in the classrooms. 3-6 teachers are also preparing for implementation of the 3-6 syllabus in the next 12- 18 months and are currently reviewing explicit instruction in Reading Comprehension.

Recently, I have been writing about how we seek to provide a contemporary education that seeks to assist students to thrive in all aspects of their 21st century life. One way we can do this is by developing ‘Learning Assets’ in our young people.
Bathurst Eisteddfod The Bathurst Eisteddfod is back and providing a great chance for students to perform, receive feedback from professionals and be inspired by other schools and musicians in Bathurst. Recently you would have received a schedule of our involvement in this event. Next week is shaping up as a huge week, with many of our choirs, orchestras and string groups set to perform. Students should ensure they are dressed in their correct uniform and have relevant instruments on their day. We wish all students well for their performances.

Innovation Week aims to provide students in Years 3-6 with the opportunity to inquire into something in which they have a high level of interest, passion or skill. In the lead up to Innovation Week, students will use the inquiry process to plan and investigate their area of interest during weekly Library lessons, before creating and exhibiting their learning on the day for their peers and the wider community. Innovation Week will be held in Week 10.

Communication Communication is all about being able to communicate ideas clearly and confidently, to listen thoughtfully to others and respond respectfully. Below you will find a few strategies and terms that may be useful to discuss on a needs basis with your child/ children as we work together to develop this concept of communication: retelling what someone has told us, using our body and face to communicate effectively, using props to help us communicate effectively, listen without interrupting and asking questions to help us understand.

We look forward to sharing the ideas, visions and talents of these students. We anticipate that voting for the positions to take place in Week 7.
HSC Trial Exams This week our Year 12 students have been in exam mode. We have fortunately only had a very small number of students impacted with illness and injury, and we hope that it stays this way. The early reports and observations have been very pleasing. The students are approaching the exams with confidence and maturity. Our presiding officer has the students well drilled in the procedures of the exams, and we are trying our utmost to deliver the optimal environment for the students to do their best. HSC Major Works August is typically also our busy period for the Year 12 students who study Visual Arts, Design and Technology and Extension English, with due dates for Major Works fast approaching. The ten months of conceptualizing, planning, drafting, trialling and improving come to an end-point for submission. Our thoughts and prayers go to our students, teachers and parents during this time. We hope that our students can proudly display their works ready for the HSC markers to arrive later in the term. Wet Weather – Go away! We certainly have had a good dose of rain this winter. Our grounds are really starting to resemble a swamp! We are very thankful for the rain, and we do apologise for the dirty shoes and clothes that come home. We thank our people responsible for cleaning uniforms and getting the students back to school looking respectable each Mr Justin Adams Acting Deputy Head P-12/ Head of Senior School Senior School day. A reminder goes out to mums and dads that if you find getting the correct uniform ready in time too difficult, we understand. Just jot a quick note down in the student diary or on a piece of paper excusing the alternate uniform item. Fingers crossed we can get a little bit of respite from the dampness and a few sunny days before the athletics carnival on Tuesday, 30 August.

In the holidays just gone, we (Harrex and Luke) travelled to the University of Technology in Sydney to compete in the state semi-final round of the UN Youth Evatt competition. The competition takes place in a model of the UN Security Council, where we debate mock resolutions acting as an assigned country. In the preliminary round, we were assigned the USA, and in the semi-final, we received Ireland. After a day wandering around the CBD, we travelled to UTC, where we discussed Iran's nuclear policy, the question of international asylum and a proposed reformation of the security council itself. These debates called on our research, quick thinking and speaking skills to work with and against the other competitors to amend and modify the resolution into a form that would please all nations involved. While we didn't make it into the next round, and not a single resolution actually passed throughout the competition, it was a great learning experience for both of us. We developed our speaking and improvising skills through the competition. The event was a great opportunity, and we can't wait to participate again next year. U18 Girls Rugby 7s big win against Mackillop Rewind your mind back to Saturday afternoon. It was freezing. It was raining. It was muddy. If you were lucky, you were at home, warm, and safely out of these annoying August elements. But if you were really lucky you were at St Stanislaus’ College, wrapped up in nine layers of clothing, wishing you had worn ten, and watching the U18 Girls Rugby 7s clash between Scots All Saints College and MacKillop College. Sure, there was a result. 15 – 5 to Scots All Saints if you’re really interested. But the actual result pales into Whatinsignificance.thoselucky so and so’s who happened to be at Stannies last Saturday witnessed was another big shift of the needle for women’s sport. In a matter of minutes, pristine uniforms became a muddy mess. Packed grandstands sang a symphony of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ as the big hits piled up thick and Therefast. were tries that made Rugby aficionados nod with Thereapproval.was teamworkathleticism, unbelievablecourageandbythegirlson the field. There was a whole heap of admiration from the punters who stood alongside it. Rugby once was a maledominated sport. ‘Was’ being the operative word! Go girls! Mr Mark Wilkinson

In a quiet corner of one of the downstairs Science laboratories on the Senior Campus is a very large map of Australia. Officially, it is known as A New Geological Map of the Commonwealth of Australia. It appeared in 1932, so this year is its 90th anniversary and was the last published work of Sir Edgeworth David, a Welsh-born geologist. David had a distinguished career. He was an expert on glaciation during the last ice age on the Main Range of Mt Kosciuszko and also studied even older glaciation in the Hunter Valley. He travelled to Antarctica with Sir Ernest Shackleton in 1907. David was part of the expedition that became the first to climb Mt Erebus in Antarctica with another notable geologist, Sir Douglas Mawson. He also led, on Shackleton’s behalf, an expedition to the South Magnetic Pole. After all this excitement, he became Professor of Geology at Sydney University. Our copy of the map came by way of Ian Pike, who was appointed as Head of Science by Michael Aikman in 1967. Mr Aikman had heard of a dynamic young science teacher of South Australian origin who worked in Darwin and appointed Ian to Scots, where he spent the rest of his career, retiring in 1992. During that time, Ian taught Geology and Junior Science. As part of his geology course, he would organise excursions From the Scots School archives MR PIKE AND HIS MAP for Years 11 and 12, alternating between the South Coast and Snowy Mountains. Ian’s extensive knowledge of important geological sites meant that the places visited were interesting and exciting. Ian also gathered a large collection of geological specimens that are still on display in his old classroom. When Ian died in 2017, his family let Scots keep most of his specimens and the David map. They continue to be a valuable teaching resource and have been used
The Scots archives has photos from days nearly forty years ago when Mr Pike collected two of his specimens. The fossilised leaves came from Coolah in 1985, and the ammonite held by Mr Dundon was the “big wet rock” found near Yass in 1986. This photo also gives a good idea of the size of the Edgeworth David map.
Some of the best granite in New South Wales comes from the Far South Coast, where this quarry at Moruya was the source of the rock for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From a 1984 excursion. Ben Crossing and the Big Wet Rock – “What’s this Mr Pike?” “A big wet rock.” It was in fact a very fine specimen of an ammonite that lived 425 million years
