A conversation with the Head of College
upcoming major events
Mr John Weeks
The past, the present, the future. Just as schools are important academic institutions, they are key social organisations that make significant contributions to our community. While our energies and focus are on the now generation, as it should be, we have past generations upon which the present school is built and we have a responsibility to plan for a sustainable and successful future for generations to come. It is important that those of us who enjoy being students, teachers and parents of Scots All Saints College “honour the past and build the future”. With this in mind, a number of projects are underway. On both campuses, museums are being created in non-teaching areas of the schools. On the All Saints Campus a committee of Old Bathurstians has worked quickly to establish the ‘Old Bathurstians’ Museum’. Stage 1 is almost complete and with their ongoing efforts, Esrom House will in time become a ‘living museum’ while continuing to operate as an administration centre. Likewise, at the Scots Campus, Karralee and the adjoining building is being prepared to house and display the memorabilia from the original school. Both museums will be available for student research, past student reunions, community use and administrative purposes. Importantly, both museums will begin a new collection, a new history, the one we are making right now. That is, of course, the Scots All Saints College built on the past, continuing into the future with confidence. At the Spring Fair on the All Saints Campus, call in to see the first stage of the ‘Old Bathurstians’ Museum’ and speak to members of the committee about the plans for the future.

Today’s Reflection Mr Samuel Gittins Chaplain
A call to the ombudsmen office. It is amazing what an appeal to the relevant industry ombudsmen office can achieve. To have someone with power and agency to mediate on our behalf is a wonderful thing. Yet, who could mediate for us before God Almighty? Who has the power and agency to stand between God and us on our behalf? … But now, once for all time, he [Jesus] has appeared at the end of the age to remove sin by his own death as a sacrifice. And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him. Hebrews 9:26b-28 [NLT-SE] Jesus is the great mediator. He alone can stand between us and God Almighty when He comes as the Just Judge. I’d recommend putting in a call. Chaplain Hebrews 9:26-28

5 Questions you can ask your child Do you ever ask your child what did they do during the day? Here are some questions you can ask your child at the end of the day to find out what they’ve been learning. 1. What did you learn today? 2. How did you go? 3. What did you do if you didn’t understand? 4. What are you most proud of? 5. What did you do today that was kind? Another great thing to do is to focus on effort. Talk to your child about an area where they have been trying hard. Ask them how it felt when they kept trying and finished a task. Premier’s Reading Challenge Not long now! Reading Records need to be completed by AUGUST 30! Please record all books online before this date and try not to leave it to the last minute to avoid delays due to heavy website traffic. Sport Shirts The coloured house shirts were originally printed without the school motto under the crest. For a limited time, Noone will replace these house shirts free of charge (same size) with the school motto added underneath. This offer will be available until the end of this term. Thanks Sasha, we really appreciated your help! We were able to run a Cake Stall on Friday, 16 August 2019 for the Middle School with the left over goodies. This was a huge success! The Friends of Junior and Middle School P&F made a total of $1,530.15 between the WAS Athletics Carnival and the Cake Stall. All monies raised goes directly back into resources for the College for our Children.

Book Week
Lithgow Book Week Students from the Scots All Saints College’s Lithgow Campus travelled to the Lithgow Library Learning Centre on Monday for their annual Book Week Presentation. After listening to several short-listed books, students enjoyed a treasure hunt around the library. Additionally, as part of the Library's competition for this years' theme of "Reading is My Secret Power", Pre-K entered a class poster, and K-6 individual artworks, which we were delighted to see hanging in the Library. Pre-K received three book prizes for their classroom library, and Mackenzie James (Kindergarten) and Chloe Bell (Year 3) received personal book prizes in K-6 for their efforts. Congratulations! Year 5 Canberra Excursion
On Wednesday, 7 August, 47 Year 5 students set-off for Canberra for a three-day excursion to explore the nation’s capital. Over the three days in Canberra, the schedule was packed full of experiences to complement the students’ learning in the areas of history, indigenous knowledge, science and to just have some fun together. There were many highlights during the excursion and certainly the chance to see democracy in action through our visit to Parliament House and the Australian Electoral Commission were among them. Through a family connection, we were also able to see local Indigenous artist Nyree Reynolds’ painting hanging at the Department of Environment and Energy; which was especially significant for the students after Nyree visited the class to explain how she painted the artwork and its meaning. Other highlights included a visit to the War Memorial, the National Museum, a night tour of the Dinosaur Museum and Questacon and a visit to the Australian Institute of Sport. Congratulations to our students, who were well behaved and represented Scots All Saints College with pride. We were impressed with their engagement in the learning opportunities they were given and it was wonderful to see them enjoy the fun of sharing rooms and travelling together enjoying each other’s company. Thank you to the teachers who joined us, Mrs Kay Murray, Mr Phillip Cant and Mr Warren Stocks and the parents who helped us, Mr Dennis White and Mr Matthew Lawson. Mrs Jo Nicholls

They’ve set out three demands for politicians to meet if they want to show that they care: no new coal, oil and gas projects, including the Adani mine, 100% renewable energy generation and exports by 2030 and to fund a just transition and job creation for all fossil-fuel industry workers. In the end, it doesn’t matter which generation ought to look after the Earth, as humans it is our job, every single one of us, to care for the world that we live in and ensure that future generations can live in a healthy and thriving environment. Compare that to the 390482 female high school players of 2018, pretty big difference, isn’t it? Throughout the world, the efforts and praise-worthy achievements of the soccer team is greatly encouraging young girls interested in athletics around the world, and as the rise of women in sport continues into 2019, the women’s soccer team also filed a lawsuit against US Soccer, saying that the discrimination they face based off gender not only affects their paychecks but also how often they play and where, how they are told to train, medical treatment, coaching and even the way in which they travel to matches. They filed this lawsuit shortly before they fought for the Women’s Cup title in France, which they ultimately won. What does the world of soccer hold for its fans next? Taylah Cooper

Student writing Killer Rain Rain is a common occurrence and one that farmers pray for in a drought exactly like we are feeling in Bathurst. But is rain pure? The answer is no, rain can be dangerous and toxic. I’m talking about Acid rain. What is Acid Rain? Acid rain is rainfall made so acidic by atmospheric pollution that it causes environmental harm. The main cause of acid rain is the industrial burning of coal and other fossil fuels. But this rain can be harmful and can cause health problems in people. The pollutants that cause acid rain can cause respiratory diseases or increase the symptoms of current diseases like chronic bronchitis. This damage can be temporary but mostly long term. Acid rain is extremely harmful to forests and trees. Acid rain seeps into the ground and can dissolve nutrients like magnesium and calcium which trees need to stay healthy. Acid rain also causes aluminium to be released into the soil making it difficult for trees to take up water. Trees located in mountainous areas are more at risk as they are exposed to acidic clouds and fog which contains greater amounts of acid. This acid, strips nutrients from leaves and needles, making it easier for infections, insects and cold weather to damage trees and forests. Acid rain affects lakes and streams and causes them to have much lower pH levels. In addition, aluminium released into the soil eventually ends up in the water supply. Increasing the acidity and the aluminium levels can be a killer to flora and fauna in these ecosystems eg frogs, phytoplankton, spotted salamander, crayfish etc. Acid rain can also damage buildings and more. Acid rain is deadly and the primary

Road safety
Keeping safe around school crossings For your child’s safety, it’s very important to ensure they use the school crossing. At all crossings you must wait on the footpath, at least one step back from the edge of the road. If there’s a School Crossing Supervisor, wait until they have stopped the traffic and called you to cross.
Lithgow Campus Pre-K–Year 6 1 Col Drewe Drive LITHGOW NSW 2790
If you are driving, you must not proceed until the School Crossing Supervisor’s hand-held sign is no longer displayed, or until the crossing supervisor indicates that you may proceed through the crossing. Children’s crossings Children’s crossings are usually part-time crossings that operate before and after school hours. They can also operate at other times when children use the crossing for excursions or during break times. When ‘Children Crossing’ flags are displayed, you must stop at the white line if pedestrians are waiting to cross. Drivers must remain stationary until the crossing is clear of pedestrians. I heard it before I saw it, it rung through my ears. My feet followed the beat of the music to a performance of the mind-blowing High Kings performance. What amazing musicians are ‘The High Kings’. After watching their spectacular concert from when they were at Dublin, they left me wanting more. In ‘The High King’, we have Martin Furey, Brian Dunphy, Finbarr Clancy and Darren Holden, and they were accompanied by an incredible array of musicians. The High Kings are a band who compose and perform songs in the genres of traditional Irish music, Folk music and Celtic music. They have been active since 2008 and have since released four studio albums, two live albums and two live DVD’s and are still performing today with all the same members. The concert started with their classic ‘The Rocky Road to Dublin’ and continued with some of their new songs and some famous and some lesser famed tunes. Stand out tracks played include, ‘The Holy Ground’, ‘Marie’s Wedding’ and ‘Phil the Fluter’s Ball’. Their closing song, ‘The Parting Glass’, was extraordinary and included a band of pipers playing Great Highland Bagpipes who came in. This performance was definitely deserving of the standing ovation leaving the fully satisfied but also wanting more. The concert was filled with audience participation and the overall feeling of the concert was alive with the crowd singing along and enjoying the night. What makes this group so amazing is there is no stand out frontman, they all take their turns and show their talents. The harmonising of the four of the group filled the room and left the audience mesmerised, each

harmony was clearly performed. I have never heard harmonising as outstanding as theirs. As well as singing the four frontmen all play a variety of instruments including the banjo, bodhrán, low whistle and guitars, showing their skill of multi-instrumentalism. Not only were the singers exceptional but the accompanists were also spectacular, their instruments include fiddle, double bass, diatonic button accordion, bodhrán and bouzouki. The player of the night, without a doubt, went to the fiddler, who soloed in multiple pieces with phenomenal skill. Playing allegro extremely clear without music, but we couldn’t forget the fantastic professional bodhrán players solo, showing extremely good technique and playing this simple-looking drum in such an advanced way creating different tones and beats. One of my favourite parts was when the bodhrán played a solo with the dancer on stage who performed an Irish jig to the beat showing amazing skill with the beat accelerating and decelerating, which left the audience amazed by his talent. Personally, I have never seen someone's feet move so fast. I could tell the songs were traditional Irish by using the components of, repetition, the use of ornamentation with the use of grace notes, cuts etc., their instruments, the beat and feel of their songs which made them so easy to dance along too and finally the formation of the songs. The songs used isometric and were built around patters of a bar-long melody of ABA semi resolution ABA final resolution or the form of binary divided into two parts with 4 to 8 bars forming AABB AABB AABB. In conclusion, this was a top-class concert, which showed the terrific musical talents of all who featured. It was a night of variety which everyone would enjoy not only the big Irish fans. It is definitely worth keeping an eye out for their songs and if you get a chance to go see them live definitely take it as this selection of musicians are truly miraculous and will definitely leave you breathless. SPOTLIGHT ON NETBALL This week we are shining the spotlight on Lauren Cant who represented the College on Monday playing in the AICES 15s netball team at the NSW CIS Netball Championships. The AICES girls finished runners up which is a fantastic result. Lauren plays primarily in the Centre court but has played in a range of positions this season for the College. Lauren is a vital member of both the SASC Colts and the SASC 2nd VII. She is a determined, skilful, intelligent and imaginative player. She has a very strong passing game and seems to read the play of the opposition easily, allowing her to take loads of intercepts each week. We congratulate Lauren on her successes this season and are grateful for her contribution to our College’s netball program.
