A conversation with the Head of College
Student interviews were conducted last week, and student nominations were assessed on application letter, academic effort and conduct, and feedback from the College staff on how the student demonstrates the values of the College.
A short list of applications is currently being made, and a vote will take place with Senior Campus students and staff invited to vote for their choice of Oncecandidate.voting
We look forward to welcoming our new leadership team for 2023. Senior School Athletics Carnival
Many thanks to the parents who came along and supported the students in the Athletics Carnival this week. We had quite the array of fashionable gum boots on display, but we were thankful that although it was lightly sprinkling on and off in the morning, the temperature was fairly mild, and the sun did make an appearance in the afternoon. Apologies to our parents and carers for the muddy washing!
Mr John Weeks
Prefect Voting School student leadership positions are currently being decided, with Year 11 students nominating for the positions of School Captains and House Captains and various prefect positions, including Academic, Boarding, Community and Co-curricular Prefect.
Our next Coffee and Prayer Meeting will take place on Friday, 9 September 2022, from 8:00 am in the College Chapel on the Junior School Campus. Please note the change to Friday. This will be the final Coffee and Prayer meeting for Term 3, and we will focus on our Year 12 students as they near the end of their schooling and the planning and preparation for 2023. All parents, carers and staff are welcome to attend and give thanks for our many blessings.
The role of a leader within the College needs to be carefully considered as the role coincides with the HSC and final year of High School. All of our leadership positions follow a model of service and involve establishing activities, representing the College or assisting others. It can be time consuming, but very rewarding and is a great honour.
Some people approach the subject of God a little like these young men did with Joe Louis. They aren’t really familiar with who he is, rather they guess and make assumptions without asking questions or listening.

God’s business card – the Old and New Testament –clearly outlines who he is and what he can do.
Listening leads to understanding Sometimes when I listen to students share their reasons why they don’t believe in God, I find myself agreeing with them or at least understanding their point of view. For some, their notion of God has very little to do with Christianity, nor how God is presented in scripture. We live in a culture that tends to ‘shout’ through media and social media, and there isn’t a lot of listening going on. Because, culturally, people are so eager to assert their opinion rather than listen, we can often guess what we think the other person may think and believe rather than taking the time to listen and understand before we respond. I recently came across a story that illustrates this point. I was reading John Dickson’s book Humiltas with the Year 12 Prefect group. He told the story of three white American college students who got on a bus in Detroit during the 1930s. They saw an African American at the back of the bus, and rather than getting to know him, they took a racist attitude and tried to pick a fight with him. They yelled at him, and called him names, but he didn’t respond. Finally, the man stood up, and he was a lot larger than the young men estimated – indeed, much bigger! He handed them his business card, which read: "Joe Louis. Boxer." Those of you familiar with your sporting history will know that Louis was the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion from 1934 to 1949.
Christians believe that God still speaks to us in this current day and world through his word, found in the Bible, to those who take the time and effort to listen.
If you haven't picked up a Bible in a while, I would encourage you to start by reading Mark's Gospel to get a clearer picture of who God is through the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and what his purpose is for us. If you don't have a Bible and would like one, please contact me, and I shall send you a copy. Amen
The next Coffee and Prayer meeting will be held on Friday, 9 September 2022 from 8:00 am in the College Chapel on the Junior School Campus. Dickson points out that he is often regarded as the number one boxer of all time, just in front of Muhammad Ali.
The curriculum review has been informed by consultation with teachers and education experts from around the state, as well as a detailed examination of quality international education systems.
Here’s an overview of the new outcomes and content in the English K-2 syllabus.
Outcomes and content from the English syllabus highlight the importance of strong foundations in the early years across oral language, reading and writing. It supports the development of early literacy knowledge and skills while continuing to acknowledge the importance of learning about and enjoying literature.

Book Week – Fostering a Love of Reading Being able to read is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. Our Library lessons and special activities such as the Literature Festival and Book Week all help promote a love of reading in our students. As part of our Book Kindergartencelebrations,Weekto Year 6 students challengedweretorecord 600 reading sessions from Monday night, 22 August, to Thursday night 25 August. If the challenge was completed, Mr Roohan and I promised to dress up as our favourite book character. Needless to say, the challenge was a great success, and congratulations Kindergarten to Year 6, on your excellent reading efforts.

Code Camp I’m very excited to announce that during these school holidays, we’ll be hosting Code Camp in our Innovation Centre. Students can design, code, create and have fun with friends at Code Camp, Australia’s favourite school holiday program!
Innovation Week Innovation Week aims to provide students in Years 3-6 with the opportunity to inquire into something in which they have a high level of interest, passion or skill. In the lead-up to Innovation Week, students will use the inquiry process to plan and investigate their area of interest during weekly Library lessons before creating and exhibiting their learning on the day for their peers and the wider community. Innovation Week will be held in Week 10. Recently students have developed questions to explore their area of inquiry and have commenced looking at the learning assets (skills and dispositions) needed to complete learning.

Learning Assets
Congratulations to our Under 12s soccer team who have finished top of the table at the end of the regular season. We wish the team well as they commence their finals campaign this Saturday.
In other Library news, Mrs Mackay will validate all entries from this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge tomorrow. Congratulations to all students that took part.
Recently, I have been writing about how we seek to provide a contemporary education that seeks to assist students to thrive in all aspects of their 21st-century life. One way we can do this is by developing ‘Learning Assets’ in our young people. Kath Murdoch writes extensively about these assets in her book ‘The Power of Inquiry.’ Throughout my fortnightly section in The Roar this term, I will focus on one asset which seeks to develop students as learners both now and beyond school.
Thinking We all have the ability to think logically, creatively and reflectively. When we think about how we use our thinking, there are different strategies we can use to make our thinking visible to others. We should remain open-minded and know that our thinking changes as we learn. Below you will find a few strategies and terms that may be useful to discuss on a needs basis with your child/ children as we work together to develop this concept of thinking: use visual organisers to show thinking, thinking about and explaining how someone else might be thinking, coming up with new ideas to solve problems, giving a reason to explain thinking, thinking through a task before beginning. Happy thinking!!

Mobile Phones at School
We are enlisting students aged 15 and over that would like to develop bush firefighting skills. The O’Connell Rural Fire Fighting Brigade has long had an association with local schools and offers great practical training, particularly for students from rural locations. The sessions would occur on the Senior Campus after school on Wednesdays from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and are free. Students will be issued an RFS uniform, which will need to be returned on completion of the course. The training is also a great way to develop the skills needed for the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Interested students can collect an enrollment form from the Deputy’s Office and return it with their parent/ guardian's permission. We are looking to start the training on Wednesday 7 September. The program typically lasts for ten weeks, and students need to attend at least 80% of the sessions.
This seemingly growing dependence on being connected to the mobile phone at all times is a growing concern for us. On a daily basis, we have numerous phones confiscated from students who have been using them inappropriately in the classroom; they are secured in the Deputy’s Office and returned with a stern warning regarding their unauthorized use at the end of the day. However, with the sheer volume of students with mobile phones and smartwatches, particularly in Stages 5 and 6, using them between classes and at breaks, it is near impossible to enforce our current policy. Many schools across Australia are also battling with
Head of Senior School Senior School
Our current mobile phone policy, as per the student handbook, reads as follows. Mobile phones must be turned off, and out of sight from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm each school day. Phones being used without permission outside of these times will be confiscated. Families needing to contact their students may leave a message with the Receptionist. As you may imagine, since COVID, this policy has been extremely difficult to enforce, but we are battling away. We believe that parents at home possibly have a similar issue of controlling their child’s use of and reliance on their phones and technology. Some support for and advice for parents can be found on the following two websites. https:// www.esafety.gov.au/parents/gift-guide/smartphones https://www.families.org.au/article/5-tips-mobilephone-use

The College has received and has posted out the 2022 NAPLAN reports. The data collected is very valuable to the school. It provides our teachers with additional data that can be used to track the performances of our students and address students' learning needs. This is also a good opportunity to remind our students and parents that NAPLAN is only one measure of student achievement, and by no means does it define the allround ability of our students. NAPLAN testing is going to be even earlier in the school year in 2023. The tests are scheduled for mid to late March.
Car Park area and being safe We love our students, and we would be very upset if one of them were to be hurt in the car park. Please help us look after the students by being a safe and considerate driver on the school grounds and in the car park area. The pick-up and drop-off bay is not a waiting area. If your child is not ready and waiting to be picked up as you arrive, you will need to park the car in the parking area. There is also a recommendation to perhaps time your arrival in the car park for 3.40 to 3.45 to avoid the ‘peak congestion’, and this also gives your child a few extra minutes to collect their belongings, say goodbye to their peers and walk to the car park and pick up area.
HSC Trial Exams
NAPLAN Report
Our Year 12 finished off their Trial HSC examinations last week. They will be receiving feedback about their performances from the teachers. It is important that our students take on board the feedback and advice, reset their goals, adjust their study schedules accordingly, and finish the rest of their HSC year as strongly as possible. This is a vital time for the students to be more ‘switched on’ with their class work and study than before, as the value they can add is huge in the final weeks. We again thank our Year 12 students for the manner in which they approached and completed their Trial Exams, and we strongly support them in finishing well.

We look forward to working with the students, parents and community as we revise our policy for 2023.
How
The last of our HSC Major Works, Visual Arts, were handed in and locked away on Monday. The Design and Technology students were at the end of last week. It has been a busy time for these students and teachers as they completed some amazing pieces. We look forward to being able to view the pieces after the visiting HSC markers have marked them in the coming weeks. Student Leadership 2023 – update
The Student Leadership Committee had the great privilege of interviewing the 41 Year 11 applicants for Student Leadership positions for 2023. It was very interesting to hear some of the student's ideas on leadership and possible future activities/initiatives. We certainly do have some great potential leaders. The students and staff will be voting this week, and further interviews may be held in the weeks that follow. We thank our Year 11 students for being courageous enough to apply. For some, it was a very anxious time as they had never been to an interview before, thus making the process of ‘real’ education valuable to the students.

There have been quite a few anniversaries on the Senior Campus this year, and there is another of note for an event that occurred fifty years ago. What is now Ives House, formerly The Kennel, was not always on its present site until 1972. When the House was first built in 1948, it was located on the current site of Aikman Hall. At the time, it was the first major new-building project for the then two-year-old Scots School. It received its name from the nickname given by the boys to John Bulkeley, Housemaster of The Kennel, who was a large man with a booming voice who was given the nickname The Bulldog, and the building in which he lived became known, eventually officially, as The Kennel. During his time at Scots (1966-1972), Headmaster Michael Aikman and the School Council presided over a period of greatly increased enrolments and also the construction of a remarkable number of new buildings. At one Speech Day during the period, the Chairman of the Council, Mr Cam Alexander, is reported (by Ian Pike) to have said, “The British had the empire on which the sun never set, but here at Scots, we have the empire where the mortar never sets”. Michael Aikman’s nickname among the boys was Brickhead because of all the construction work. By 1972, attention was given to the building of the assembly hall. It was decided to locate the new hall on the site of The Kennel. With boarding accommodation in high demand, The Kennel was From the Scots School archives THE KENNEL

retained as a boarding house but was relocated to where it is now. In a scene reminiscent of The History Channel The Mega Movers series, The Kennel was cut into sections and then jacked up. A large multiwheeled vehicle was inserted under each section before they were driven the few dozen yards to the new site. In good Scottish tradition, the building was piped to its new site. Over the years, an additional dormitory was added, and the present staff flats on the southern end. A Head of House’s flat was added at the northern end, and new wet areas.

We sadly record the passing last week of Don Hicks, who was a much-loved member of The Scots School grounds staff. His daughter Lynda Scott commented on The Scots School Old Boys and Girls Association Facebook page:
Junior School

A tribute to Don Hicks
Over the years, many people have commented on the way the grounds at the Scots campus have been maintained, and during his time there, Don carried out much of the work needed to keep up the standard. He was one of the team in 1989 when The Scots School won an award for Best School in the Tidy Towns competition. Many other tributes have been paid to him by former staff and students of Scots. for use in 1982. At that time, The Kennel accommodated around ninety boys. When boarding numbers declined in the 1990s, various sections of The Kennel were used as the school shop, Health Centre, day house, and accommodation for the Korean Keystone Foundation. It was given a major renovation in 2018, opening as a boys boarding house for the first year of Scots All Saints College, then the girls took over from 2020, with some more rebuilding taking place. By this time, the association with Mr Bulkeley was not well known beyond the boys who were in the house in his time, and some parents looking to enrol children at the school looked askance at their sons or daughters being accommodated in the dog house! It was renamed Ives House after Betty Ives. The timber walls facing the two inner courtyard areas of the house are the only remaining cladding from the original 1948 building.
Kirilee, Laura and Izaak being at the College meant that Don and his wife Joan were regular visitors again after Don’s retirement.
