A conversation with the Head of College
upcoming major events
Mr John Weeks
Just a few weeks ago I asked the students in our Middle School (Years 5-8) to write about their understanding of our school motto “All For Christ.” I have over 100 well thought out responses from individuals and groups – how good is that? What is so impressive is the depth of understanding our young people have about Christ and his teachings. Here are just a few of the responses I received. “All for Christ means we respect God in everything we do. We respect his creations and make people happy. God is the creator of life, love and faith and we make our decision in His name. One in faith, one in glory, one in grace” – Year 5 students. “Scots All Saints motto, All For Christ, means to share each other’s ideas and opinions, respect each other and be compassionate, kind and helpful towards others and to give each other the best shot at the future. We’re a Christian school and we try to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. God is the creator and ruler of the universe, we should worship and praise him. We have respect for him.” – Year 8 students. When I attend school assemblies I am also moved by the prayers which are written and delivered by our students. They are thoughtful and respectful with a focus on others – they reflect the heart of our students. A quote I remember about prayer goes something like this “Prayer becomes more meaningful as we share with Christ all things – our experiences, our gratitude, our needs and to know He is listening”. Praying for our College; our students, staff, families and all of our activities is an opportunity to unite in purpose as a community that is “All For Christ.” Each term parents are invited to the Scots All Saints Prayer meeting to pray for our College. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday 11 September at 10:30 am on the All Saints Campus, Eglinton Road. Our Prayer leader is Denise Weeks and all are welcome.

Today’s Reflection Mr Samuel Gittins Chaplain
Got friends in high places? … Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. 2 For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. 3 And this is the way to have eternal life – to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth…” John 17:1-3 [NLT-SE] 1
We can know and be known by the King of Creation… can’t get higher than that!

Scots All Saints College is pleased to announce that we are offering students the opportunity to join the CASE Space School International Study Program in 2020. CASE Space School is an amazing opportunity for students seeking to pursue success in a STEAM career. Students will be immersed in enriched and exclusive space science activities to explore the multi-facets of STEAM. Students will also learn and engage inQ an inspiring personal and leadership development program to truly empower them for changing times. Junior Space School is training for young explorers and is an engaging, hands-on adventure. Students learn about space travel, the development of space-related technologies and are led through several simulated missions. This program is focused on providing relevance to, and inspiring passion for STEAM through exposure to space and broader ‘earth’ science exploration. Every step of the way they are guided to build skills in goal setting, project planning, critical-thinking and problem-solving. Senior Space School is management training for young leaders. With greater program depth, students have incredible access to NASA. They visit areas not accessible by the public; and engage directly with NASA experts to design and plan their own space mission within a given budget. An immersive program that hones their individual leadership, project management, resource allocation crisis management and teamwork skills. Students learn from NASA experts and other leading organisations to foster new levels of collaboration and teamwork. Students are meticulously cared for by dedicated Group Managers who are trained and certified by the California Association for STEAM Education. All Group Managers are Working with Children and Australian Federal Police checked, and hold current CPR, asthma and anaphylaxis certification. Students return with big dreams and lasting confidence, inspired by the ultimate STEAM experience at NASA. An information evening will be held at the school on Thursday 19 September at Aikman Hall, Scots All Saints College where students and parents can learn more about the program. Click here to RSVP.

Recognition referrals It was very pleasing to receive a referral for a number of Year 10 students to recognise their effort and performance in the recently completed Geography assessment task relating to Coastal Management. The following students were included in the referral, and are commended for their work: Simi Atluri, Jac Burge, Sophie Cox, Isaac Cove, Callum Duncan-Keen, Loretta Francis, Tikira Hawken, Amy Horne, Austin Markwick, Jessica McCarthy, Callie Molkentin, Keeran Rajkumar, Charlotte Russell, Eliza Schoenmaker, Liddian Selwood, Jonah Siede, Thomas Siede and Isobelle Sotter. Student Leadership Development Program Year 11 students have been invited to apply to be part of the student leadership program for 2020. This program is part of a fresh vision for student leadership at the College, modelled on the example of Jesus Christ. When we examine the life of Jesus, we see that he cared immensely about developing people. The leadership style that Jesus exemplified was not about power or control; it was about building character and self-worth. The program aims to provide student leaders with opportunities to learn, practise and develop skills within a supportive environment that will better equip them for future leadership roles after they leave school. In addition, the program will provide greater opportunities for all students to become involved in planning and/or participating in different projects and activities to enhance their experience of College life. Junior School classroom visits I was enriched by the experience of visiting various Junior School classes last Monday, in the company

The students were working together very well as a team to provide entertaining renditions of two very challenging spoken items. As I write this piece, the girls and boys are performing at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre. No matter what the outcome of the competition, they – and their teachers - can be justifiably proud of their great efforts.

Students spend 12 hours creating their book for Write a Book in a Day Story and photo courtesy of the Western Advocate It took J. R. R. Tolkien over a decade to write his epic fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings, but a group of Scots All Saints College Year 10 students had just 12 hours to write their own story. These students participated in the Write a Book in a Day competition last Thursday, where they were given five parameters - two primary characters, a non-human character, setting and issue and five random words community, skipper, magic, canvas and stings - to help build their story. They titled their story The Adventures of Shirley and Watty + Rhubarb, with Shirley and Watty named after Sherlock Holmes characters Sherlock and Dr Watson. Rhubarb is a goat. According to Isobelle Sotter, it took about an hour to brainstorm the story's main characters and direction the story would go. "After an hour of brainstorming, we had the name of the characters," she said. "Shirley is a detective, while Watty is her little brother. "Rhubarb is the name of

the goat. How the goat came into it was we were thinking of how we were going to work the dog collar (the nonhuman character) into the story. What was meant to happen was the characters were to find a dog to put the collar on, but they couldn't find one, so they had to make do with a goat. "They can't have everything they want but they have to make do with what they have." She said that collaboration and using the different talents of the participating students was the best thing about the challenge. Students had to write the book, as well as creating their own illustrations, between 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Pre-Kindergarten news
Pre-Kindergarten have had an amazing term with lots of special visitors coming in to help us learn to care for our bodies including dentist Dr Theresa, firefighters Tim, Chris and Paul and Senior Constable Joyce. We also look forward to visits from the SES and paramedics in the upcoming weeks. As we have been preparing for Father's Day by creating, painting, singing, reading and sharing about our dads etc. we have most importantly been generously donating men’s supplies to give to the Uniting Safe Shelter this weekend. If anyone would also like to contribute there will be a box provided at the Father's Day breakfast on Friday morning.

Student writing Once in a blue moon... Watch out everyone, the moons about to hit! On the 30th of this month, the moon is going to be the closest in can possibly be to Earth in its usual orbit. This point in the moon’s track is called a perigee while the furthest tip is called an apogee. And yes, it is visible to the naked eye; the moon will appear 14% bigger and 30% brighter than if it was on the longer side of its elliptical orbit. Exciting isn’t it? Well you won’t get to see it, not well anyway. That’s because the Earth has decided to outshine its intergalactic buddy, literally.
Road safety
On the night of 30 August, 2019, the Earth will block out all light from the sun and throw the moon into darkness, yep, it’s a new moon. This phenomenon known as a ‘super new moon’ is also coinciding with an event called the ‘black moon’ which is the second new moon in one lunar month. This stellar event that is truly the star of the show this month is going to be very quiet, so start the countdown, grab a deck chair and if anyone has a keen eye, you just might be able to spot it. 40km/h school zones 40km/h school zones slow traffic on the roads around schools. This is to help protect children on their way to and from schools at the times and places where they are often in high numbers. Most 40km/h school zones operate between 8.00am and 9.30am and from 2.30pm until 4.00pm. The 40km/h school zone speed limit must be observed even if school children cannot be seen. A 40km/h school zone operates on all notified school days including staff development days (student-free days). While some schools may operate on different term dates, school zone speed limits must be followed during NSW Government determined school terms. You can find the school term dates on the following websites: • roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au • educationstandards.nsw.edu.au • education.nsw.gov.au To increase motorists’ awareness of 40km/h school zones, triangular ‘dragon’s teeth’ road markings indicate that the vehicle is entering a school zone. Fines and a loss of demerit points will apply if the 40km/h speed limit isn’t followed. For more information on fines and demerit points, visit rms.nsw.gov.au For more information on keeping our kids safe around schools visit the parents section on safetytown.com.au
