In the 2007 movie, The Kingdom, starring Jamie Foxx, American investigators are trying to uncover who blew up their Embassy in Saudi Arabia. They discover that the bombers are motivated by their hope of entering Heaven. The response from one of the characters is startling: why would people in America (or Western Culture) be remotely interested in the concept of
This(paraphrased).conceptmade a lot of sense to me. Our western cultural pursuit for happiness is based on materialism – we tend to think that Heaven on earth can be bought, or at the very least charged to our credit card. Our notions of Heaven or God’s Kingdom can be viewed as sitting on little white clouds with harps. Given the musical talent of some of us, including myself, this is not really a very appealing idea. Certainly, this is not the Christian understanding, nor is it what Jesus died on the cross to achieve.
Heaven when their standard of living is already better than what any religion has to offer
In Mark Chapter 10, a rich man comes to Jesus and asks: “What must I do to inherit the Kingdom of God?” Here was a man thinking about and hoping to enter God’s Kingdom. Jesus's answer provides some insight into man's relationship with money and the poor. What struck me about the rich man's question was that at least he desired to inherit God’s Kingdom. I wonder how many of us actually ask this question.
The well-known American Puritan preacher Jonathan Edwards once preached a sermon titled: Heaven is a World of Love. One point he makes is that we all desire deep, rich, real, love relationships with each other and our creator. This love relationship exists in the relationship between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The point of the Kingdom is that you and I are being invited into this love relationship that we all long for. The setting for this relationship is pointed to in Revelation 22, where God’s Kingdom is presented as a city established around the tree of life (mentioned in the book of Genesis 2), and its full meaning is empowered by the cross of Christ – the true tree of life. At the end of the day, material possessions deliver superficial comfort. We always want more and are never truly satisfied. The ‘void’ in our life that really needs filling can only be filled with God's love and our deep connection with him. I would encourage all of us to continue asking and seeking answers to how we can enter God’s Kingdom. It is the simplest thing to do, and yet it will shake your life to its very core (in a good way)! We can all experience a taste of God's Kingdom in our daily lives if we open our heart and soul to him through prayer. Amen. Thank you to everyone who has taken an Operation Christmas Child Box and returned them. It is so lovely to think of all the happy faces when the children receive them. We still have a few boxes if you would like to participate. On the Senior Campus please see me or Mr Chris Walsh, on the Junior Campus please pop in and see Mrs Walsh. Thank you for your Kind heart and donations. These need to be returned by the end of term.

This week is National Child Protection Week. It is a campaign held annually across Australia to raise awareness of child abuse prevention. Slater is finding his way Last weekend, Year 7 student Matthew Slater participated in the NSW Schools Orienteering Championships. The Sprint event was held over two races and Matthew placed second overall in the M11-12A category. On Sunday, Slater competed in middle distance in M11-12A and came third. On 20-21 August, Matthew also competed in the ACT Championships. He came first in middle distance and second in long distance M12A division. Matthew has been selected in the All Australian Invitational Development Team to compete in the Australian Schools Championships in late September in Victoria. He will also be competing in additional orienteering events at Nationals.
Frustrating, half of our lovely HICES team were stuck at McDonalds in Lithgow while we waited for the roads to open. Sadly they didn’t open up in time for us to make it to Homebush so we had to make a very annoying U-turn and head back to Bathurst with nothing more than a belly full of hash browns. Awesomely, the students who travelled to Homebush the evening before competed like absolute champions! We achieved some great results and my inbox quickly filled up with lovely emails from other schools and parents who were so impressed by our students’ can-do attitudes as they jumped in and competed their best in a range of different events. Way-to-go guys! A huge thank you to Mrs Pearce and Mrs Hornery for jumping on board as team managers. A big congratulations to Amelia Craft, Chelsea Abel, Ella Hunter, Divjot Nat and Georgie Hemsworth who have all qualified to represent HICES at the upcoming CIS Athletics carnival.
HICES Athletics Weird. Frustrating. Awesome. That was our recent HICES Athletics Carnival in a Weirdly, nutshell. both the Great Western Highway and Bells Line Road were closed thanks to this Winter’s biggest dump of snow and consequent black ice.

I am very proud of all our students who organised themselves to attend the All Breeds Heifer Show, held at Blayney Showground last weekend. We had the following students attend - Lily Moore, Harrison Croker, Olivia Anderson, Isabella Irvine, Morgan Still, Marcus Wythe, Teagan Chapman, Oliviah Grimshaw, Fraser Gill, Patrick McKiernan, Jessica Mills, James Mills and Sophia Burke. Each and every student learnt so much and had a ball. The aim of this show is for the education of students in the cattle industry – on Friday, they had workshops on everything cattle, including talks on heifer health, fitting cattle for shows, judging cattle and a lot more. Saturday and Sunday are judging days for cattle and the students. On the Saturday night there is a big fundraising auction and dinner, which is so much fun. The results were fantastic, with the major results as Patrickfollows:McKiernan took Simba, a College steer, who took out Champion Steer of the Show!

Last week, Kindergarten visited the Senior School Farm as part of their STEAM Astudies.bigthank you to Mr Meek, who explained many of the farm tools and machines before taking students on a tour of the feedlot. After viewing the cattle in the feedlot, Year 9 students helped Kindergarten brush the sheep in the top yards. There was even time for a tractor tour! A great time was had by all.

From the All Saints' College archives THANK YOU JOHN AND DENISE WEEKS
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220908031129-2bc47b4ff009f380f0f4527864c2ef74/v1/8e7770759e506c6434c5549e37cf0db8.jpeg)
On the retirement of these two, the Archive departments of both schools must acknowledge the support we have had from them. If it were not for John’s success in finding funds and Denise’s mentoring, neither of these two departments would be able to operate so effectively, and much of our history would remain shelved in damp, disordered rooms. Here at the All Saints Campus, we have a museum and other places in Esrom House, the Chapel, Kemmis building, and eventually, the Reekie Language Centre, where we can display our valuable archives. It was through John’s negotiation with the governing board and Denise’s expertise and advice we have been able to continue working through the history of our school and saving it for both the past and future generations to see. The Archive departments are very fortunate that both John and Denise have a love of history as we have benefited. Without this love, it is possible we would not have been able to have the Watson Museum in its place. Denise has been very supportive of our work and has made sure we have had the funds and materials needed to continue our work. In addition, our museum curator, Tim Sargeant (ex ASC) must be acknowledged for his excellent displays as he continues to work on the Portrait room and the Bean room in the museum. From the All Saints’ College Archives DepartmentThank you John and Denise!
