A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks

Announcing the Scots All Saints College Past Students' Association

Scots School and All Saints’ College, two museums have been created to honour the past and build the future. The museums are filled with the stories of past students and will continue to be developed in the future as time goes on. The inaugural meeting of the Interim Committee of the Scots All Saints Past Students' Association was held this week. The Interim Committee has representatives of all past groups and the new generation of Scots All Saints College students (almost 300 will have graduated 2018-2021).

School days are a time of growing, learning and building friendships… it’s a critical time in our formation, truly a time of self-discovery.

The members of the Interim Committee are: Mr John Cranfield

Mr Harry Dickenson

Scots All Saints College is a community of students, staff, parents and supporters, with a history starting in 1874 on the hill where Bathurst High School now stands. Firstly, as All Saints Grammar – an all-boys school, girls joined the school in 1976 when Marsden Girls closed and All Saints’ Co-Educational College was formed. The original Scots School commenced with the Karralee boys in 1942 and remained a boy’s only school until it became co-ed in 1997. And in 2018, our history took another turn when Scots All Saints College was created.

Throughout this time, past students have been welcomed and supported to continue friendships and association with their schools or, as is often stated - their ‘Alma Mater’.

At the first meeting, a new constitution approved by the College Council was tabled and Amanda Kemp was confirmed as Interim Chair with support from Gordon Thompson (Memberships and Communications), Memory Sanders and Andrew Maher (Archivists).

In recent times, The Scots School Old Boys and Girls Association (TSSOBGA) and the Old Bathurstians' Union (OBU) have faithfully fulfilled this goal of keeping the past students communities connected and involved. There are almost 20,000 listed past students associated with these groups. Since 2017, when Scots All Saints was created, many projects have been addressed to ensure the success of the new college. Many discussions have occurred around the creation of a new past student's association with members from the existing TSSOBGA and OBU. With all members of the Interim Committee now in place, planning is underway to officially launch the Scots All Saints College Past Students' Association. To all past students we are excited for the future and look forward to gathering together in the post COVID world. Further information will be available shortly via the current communication channels of the TSSOBGA and OBU. My sincere thanks to the members of the Interim Committee for your fabulous support and infectious enthusiasm for the new Scots All Saints Past Students' Association.

ROAR THE

From the Chaplain Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain

Candid camera in COVID times Many years ago there was an American television show called Smile, You’re on Candid Camera. The 'prank’ styled program would secretly film people when they were faced with a dilemma. During one scene, the producers decided to change the public toilet signs from ‘Male’ and ‘Female’ to ‘Us’ and ‘Them’. The unsuspecting public were filmed reading the signs, bemused by what to do next. By sheer accident, the prank turned into a social experiment with everyone walking into the ‘Us’ facility. The story for me illustrates that we all want to be a part of the ‘Us’, to feel included in our community. It’s here that we find meaning, purpose, and identity. One of the side effects of the current COVID-19 restrictions is the division it is creating between State and Federal governments, and within our own community regarding how the governments should respond, with vaccination debates and arguments concerning the rights of the individual versus the State. We can all quickly jump to conclusions and point the finger at ‘Them’ – those who disagree with us. From a Christian perspective, the tension between ‘us’ and ‘them’ is driven by worry and fear. Did you know that the most common statement throughout the Bible is ‘Do not be afraid’? This (or ‘do not fear’ or ‘do not worry’) occurs 365 times! Indeed, Matthew 6 Jesus goes into great detail about why we should not

worry. I often struggle with this passage, as I have a gift for finding a problem and then worrying about it. But Jesus is not just saying ‘do not worry’ in the Sermon on the Mount, as if we could turn on and off worrying. Rather, his remarks are part of a far bigger statement – 'think beyond yourself and give to the poor’, 'remember you are not in control, God is, so pray to Him’, ‘remember your hope, future and treasure are in Heaven,’ so therefore, ‘do not worry,’ and then Jesus finishes off the section of the sermon by saying ‘do not judge others!’, or in other words, stop creating ‘us’ and ‘them’ categories. At the end of the day, we all want to be part of the ‘Us’. But in this current world, it is easy to be overcome with fear and anxiety and to try to control what is mostly outside our control. Jesus is saying that we need to be careful not to be manipulated by fear, that we should avoid thinking and behaving in self-righteous ways that demonise ‘others’. The way to do that is to hand things over to God (share our worries with Him in prayer), focus on fulfilling the needs of others rather than standing in judgement of ’them’, and to look forward to the Great Kingdom to come. I welcome the opportunity to pray with you and help you or your family members in any way I can. Amen. Michael.bennett@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au Mob: 0410 650 090

Senior School Mr Andrew Weeding Deputy Head P-12/ Head of Senior School

Zoom Free Day Thursday, 9 September Both teachers and students are to be commended for their adjustment to the online learning environment. The opportunities to be creative are significant and our students are demonstrating this daily. We are mindful that lessons delivered through Zoom every day can be tiring. Therefore, Thursday next week (9 September) will be a Zoom free day for lessons. Instead, teachers will post the work for Thursday on Canvas in advance.

We encourage students to collect this work on Wednesday evening and then complete it in a selfpaced way throughout the day, avoiding, where possible, the need to use a computer. Today I spoke with Year 12 about what we can currently do based on advice from the Department of Education. Under current health directives, we are allowed to have Year 12 on the campus for a maximum of two hours a day in small groups to prepare for the HSC. To that end, some subjects will invite small groups to come to Aikman Hall to review their Trial exam. We know this will not be possible for some students, and teachers will make contingency plans with those who can’t make it. Subject teachers will communicate arrangements with their classes as appropriate, including the COVID plan for when on site. All the best to Year 11 for their exams next week.

SUMMONING THE SERVANTS

Aficionados of period television series like Downton Abbey or Upstairs, Downstairs, (for those now old enough to remember it), will need no reminder of the panel in the servants area on which were mounted a number of bells that were rung from various parts of the house when the Master or Mistress needed the assistance of one of the servants. Tradesmen working in the roof of Karralee have known for some time that the cables for the servants bells had been left there, and now for the first time we publish some photos of part of the system that was revealed this week when the electrician was installing some new electricity cable in the building. My thanks to Jeff Reeks, our Property Manager, who was able to photograph the system in a place that aging archivists are Conduits embedded in the ill-advised to enter!

The major rooms in the house had a handle or knob that was connected to a set of bells close to the servants’ area. The handle was connected by a cable and when Master or Mistress needed to, they would use the knob to ring the bell for that room. Two metal conduits exposed near the fireplace during re-plastering of what is now Mrs McDonnell’s office may have been for the bell wire. In some houses, the bell was rung using a long cable that came down from the ceiling, usually decorated with tassels and cloth - Morticia summoning Lurch in The Addams Family comes to mind. By the early 20th Century, electric bell systems were replacing the old mechanical ones, but concurrently, families wealthy enough to be able to pay servants declined in number and the need for systems to summon them went as well. Previous occupiers of Karralee are to be thanked for leaving this piece of history in place. The intention is to enclose it again, as it has been protected in its present location for quite a few years.

Creative thinking

Yesterday Mr Pearce's Year 9 Science class had to make a 3D model of a neuron, label it and submit a photo. She received this photo last night (pictured left) from a student. She was so impressed with the creative thinking that was shown and the possibilities that do exist when away from the traditional classroom.
