A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks Head of College

The Drought… and young people Prolonged drought impacts on everyone, but especially on our families who are working in our agricultural and related industries. As a college, in the drought affected Western region of NSW, we are very much aware of the impact our farming families are experiencing and I want to assure families that we will work together to maintain each child’s continuity of education through this challenging time. Our focus is on the wellbeing of each child in our care as they navigate the impact that drought has on their family. This drought is being referred to as the ‘worst’ in recorded history. For young people learning, reading, seeing and experiencing this, it means that they are living through something not previously encountered. UNICEF (United Nations International Children Emergency Fund) is responding to needs of children who are living with drought by giving them a voice and a genuine sense of empowerment through participation in the first NSW Youth Summit on Living with Drought. Today's Reflection Mr Samuel Gittins Chaplain

Well-deserved anger and judgement is a terrible thing to face. However, on the cross God the Son bears this on our behalf: Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down.

And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6 [NLT-SE] Why would Jesus do this? So we could be whole, so we could be healed. … The offer still stands.

Junior NSWCIS Athletics Congratulations to the 12 students who represented Scots All Saints College and HICES at the NSWCIS Athletics Championships last week. This was a large representation of our school athletics team and these wonderful athletes should feel incredibly proud of their selection and achievement. Amongst the 12 athletes, we had throwers, jumpers, sprinters, middle distance runners and relay members. There were some personal best results on the day but importantly all students represented our school with maturity, determination and enthusiasm. Further congratulations must be extended to Izaak Scott and Ashley Mullins who will represent CIS at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships in November. With an amazing throw of 29.24m, Izaak won the gold medal in the Junior Boys Discus event. Ashley Mullins won the bronze medal in the 11 Years discus event with an impressive throw of 27.19m. These are outstanding achievements and we wish you well as you prepare and compete at the NSWPSSA State Championships. Congratulations and well done to Lincoln Craft, Oscar Yordanoff, Ashley Mullins, Emily Tallentire, Max Hemsworth, Lillian Gittins, Izaak Scott, Charles Croaker, Noah English, Peter Craft, Aston Hornery and Sian Campbell.

Mrs Tracey Leaf Head of Scots Campus/ Director of Senior School & Boarding “IT’S NOT OVER TILL IT’S OVER” This great saying is attributed to the American professional baseball catcher, ‘Yogi’ Berra. Actually, the original quote is ‘It ain’t over till it’s over’, but I prefer the more formal English version! It’s been another busy term for students and staff and it really isn’t going to be over until late in the evening of the 27 September.

AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK CENTRE The After School Homework Centre at the Scots and All Saints campuses will not be open on Monday, 23 September. We look forward to welcoming back students on a Monday afternoon in Week 2 of next term.

WINTER SPORTS TOUR 2020 We have reviewed the Tour applicants, their ages, their preferred sport and their playing positions. Whilst we have some excellent applicants who would be awesome to tour with, we feel that we do not have enough students to make an international tour in 2020 viable. However, due to the interest from the students for a sports tour, Mr Gardner and I are now investigating some domestic options which we know will be just as rewarding, fun and quite a bit cheaper- which may attract some other students to join in. Students are encouraged to please contact Mr Gardner or Mr Adams if they are interested in a domestic tour in 2020. The tours will primarily be for rugby in the Term 1 holiday and netball in the mid-year holiday.

We thank Captain Setright and our leaders Caiban and Madi for their organisation and leadership over the weekend.

WINTER SPORT FINALS The Grand Finals are on this weekend for some of our teams. We congratulate the students and coaches on getting this far in the season and wish them well with their matches this weekend. My advice is to stay calm, concentrate on the getting the basics right and enjoy yourself. NSW Drought Summitt In August 2018, 100% of NSW was declared in drought or drought affected. This drought has been devastating for a lot of farming families and closer to home it has affected our College farm. After hand feeding our stud cattle for the past two years, we have had to send them out on agistment and are forever grateful to those families who have been assisting in this process. The farm has had a successful lambing season with most ewes having twins or triplets. Our school ewes are all being hand fed, and with another lot of lambs due shortly, making drought planning even more critical to ensure there is enough feed and water to support the growing stock numbers. Our Agricultural faculty has been looking into ways of maximising water usage and adopting sustainable practices to secure feed for stock on our own College working farm which is a valuable educational resource for our students. As the Head of College has noted earlier, Four students applied for the NSW Youth Summit on Living with Drought and all four have been accepted. We are excited to announce that Holly Stokes, Harriett Mitchell, Will Thomas and Felicity Webb will attend the summit and will work closely with other young people to discuss the challenges they face living with drought and to examine ways to strengthen preparedness. Teen Brain

Over the past month in the lead up to Spring Fair we have been celebrating the generous support we received from our event sponsors to support the event.

If you haven’t already booked tickets, I urge you to consider attending David Gillespie’s seminar entitled The Teen Brain. Why screens are making your teenager depressed, anxious, and prone to lifelong addictive illnesses – and how to stop it now. The event is being presented by the P and F, and from all accounts this is a very thought provoking seminar, considering, the challenges we face as parents and carers in todays technological world. Being held on 26 September at CSU Bathurst, you can get your tickets at www.eventbright.com and search for Teen Brain. For additional information contact Gemma Green on 0427 103 747 or gemmgreen@gmail.com On Wednesday last week, we held our last P and F meeting for Term 3, with some robust discussion on events, and what these may look like into the future. As a result of this, a small working group has been established to brainstorm ideas as we continue the growth of our school community. Should you have any thoughts or ideas you would like to share, please forward them onto me via president.sascpfa@outlook.com. Another matter raised and the topic of long discussion was with regard to end of season celebrations for sporting teams. Once we have discussed this with the College Executive I will ensure further information is passed onto the school community. Until next week!

However what we have not done, is mention another generous group of businesses that chose to donate gifts or services that we were able to use to fund raise with. It would be remise of me to not mention these businesses. On behalf of our community, I wish to thank the following, and commend to you to use their services: BUSINESS
