A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
A school term of many twists and turns! Thank you to all members of our College Community, staff, parents and students for the support you have given each other over this past term. While there have been restrictions and disappointments, we have worked hard and found other ways to keep teaching and learning going and, importantly, to stay connected. I particularly commend the teaching and support staff to you. They have not missed a beat and while remote learning methods are not perfect; they have worked exceptionally hard to maintain high standards of teaching. I am very proud of them all! While we have been focused on supporting all students, the commitment to Year 12 has been exceptional. That commitment will be ongoing throughout Term 4, right through to the HSC, with ongoing teaching and seminars to keep them motivated, on track and connected. And yes, we plan to celebrate their time at school and, in faith, have booked venues for the Valedictory Assembly and Valedictory Dinner. We are also making a Valedictory video to acknowledge all of them. These details will Campus East (Scots) Senior School, Boarding (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

be communicated separately to Year 12 students and parents. The term ahead is scheduled to start on Tuesday, 5 October 2021. The College will work towards this date in the hope that restrictions for our region will be lifted. Clearly the next two weeks of holidays are crucial as our community battles the coronavirus outbreak. Throughout the holiday period, the College will provide you with regular updates on the changing health landscape as it applies to school operations for Term 4. As I said, the College is well prepared for the new term with our staff working through the requirements of Health advice and orders, as they apply to them personally, professionally as well as to the physical structures and operations of the College. Holidays are almost here… it is time to close up the virtual classrooms, get outside, move about, catch up face-to-face as restrictions ease and though it has been difficult… count our many blessings. God Bless.

Trimming your relationship with God Yes, we made it! The final week of term! This term has reminded me of the time when I came out to Bathurst as a boy to attend a gliding course. I have shared with you in a previous The Roar when the tow cable broke, however the other nine flights were non-eventful. My lasting memory of flying the glider was the constant need for the trainee pilot (i.e. me), to be ‘trimming’ the glider so that we could rise and fall on thermal currents. Of course, if you don’t trim the plane properly, it falls out of the sky! This term, this principle of ‘trimming’, or constantly adjusting to the educational environment, has been a challenge for us all: students – with tasks and exams moving and doing it all online; teachers – trying to provide the ‘Goldilocks’ amount of work (not too much and not too little); and parents – juggling your Campus East (Scots) Senior School, Boarding (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

own work commitments, managing a household whilst tutoring your kids and trying to hide the fact that you can’t remember how to do their maths equations anymore. So well done everyone! This principle of ‘trimming’, of course, is a good illustration for our spiritual lives as well. God does not call us to just believe; the Gospel writer Mark (5:7) points out that even the evil spirits believe in God. But rather, our belief is meant to lead us into a deep relationship with God. As with all close relationships, we are constantly ‘trimming’ or adjusting as we get to know the ‘other’ in a deeper, more loving way. The goal is to enjoy a deep intimacy, where our heart is laid bare and nurtured within the relationship. In Isaiah 43:1, God reminds his people, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name. You are my people.” This is not something that we should take for granted, but rather a relationship we should seek in a deeper way by speaking to Him in prayer and reading His word in the Bible. It is an absolute privilege to be able to call on our Heavenly Father to walk beside us and share in our lives and burdens. Enjoy the holidays. Amen.

The whole program only costs $400 for the total 15 days and includes accommodation, some meals and transport to the training venues. Details and application form are available on their website: https://www.hayinc.com.au University selection rank adjustments Many applicants receive an offer to a course even though they have an ATAR below the published lowest selection rank. Often this is because other factors have been taken into consideration in combination with their ATAR and their selection rank for that course has been adjusted (and is higher than their ATAR). Selection rank adjustments are applied differently from institution to institution and from course to course within the same institution, so UAC has put together quick links to each institution's website with information on how each might apply adjustments to an applicant's selection rank.

France and Switzerland are two of the most scientifically exciting regions of the world making their mark in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Students in Year 7 and 8 were given a brief to explore the design and formation of a significant structure in either of these two countries. Using skills of observation, comparing, design and engineering. Then photographing their free standing towers for documentation of learning. Students needed to explore shapes, lines, weight, and patterns to design and construct their towers.

THE SCOTS SCHOOL P&F ASSOCIATION MINUTES BOOK number of other notable Bathurstians. In 1956, the Pipe Band was being formed and early in the year, the P&F spent £20 on bagpipes. A further £200 was devoted to work on Main Oval. By the end of the year, another £185 15/- 0d had been spent on bagpipes, and 1,234 posts for the Main Oval fence purchased with a “Buy A Post” campaign. The “Cricket Oval” project had cost just under £400, and was completed during 1957. From other sources, it is known that Ivor Hector donated much more, with the staff from his brickworks coming in on the weekends to do much of the work. A pile of old books kept in the Betty Ives Archives Centre has turned out to contain the minutes of meetings of The Scots School Parents and Friends Association for its first two decades. Quite a few records of the early days of Scots disappeared before Betty began keeping things, but this is one randomly preserved treasure. The minutes record the foundation of the P&F in 1949 with Mrs Elsie Dougan as President, Ivor Hector as one of two Vice-presidents (the name of the other is alas illegible, possibly Mr. G. Trotman), Mrs Trevor-Jones as Secretary and Mr. J. W. Campbell as Treasurer. In that year, the school fete raised £120, which was forwarded to the School Council to be spent on the playing fields. There is a gap in the minutes book from 1950 to 1955, but sixty-five years ago, the Headmaster, Mr. Allan Mitchell, chaired the meetings which continued to be attended by Mrs Dougan (when her husband’s duties as Moderator of the Presbyterian Church allowed), Ivor Hector (President), Mr. and Mrs Wattie McKibbin, Mr. Doug Trevor-Jones, Mrs Cameron, wife of Dr Ralph Cameron, Mr. T. Gordon, Mr. Chadwick and a

Money was raised through a fleece competition, raffling a tennis racket, sale of sketches of the oval, street stalls, sale of refreshments at Sports Day, and a late afternoon party at the Bathurst CWA (cost £1 1/- per head). Entertainment was provided by Danny McKinnon, who “was asked to play, and Paul Sullivan was asked to sing”. A dance was also organized at 25/- per couple at Heath’s Rainbow Room, where the new Pipe Band was part of the entertainment for the evening. The minutes book continues on into 1957 with proposals to improve the new library, and the suggestion of a swimming pool, a project realised in 1961. In the intervening years, voluntary parents and friends' bodies and both Scots and All Saints worked very hard at raising money to improve schools’ facilities. The children of some of the P&F members mentioned in 1956 were themselves involved later on. The Hunter Sports Centre and the Pavilion on Main Oval both owe their existence to fundraising by the Scots P&F, and other groups with similar aims are continuing to contribute to new facilities to improve Scots All Saints. The Cameron Library renovation being one example, and the Innovation Centre.

Kerry Robinson retires after 23 years service
Mrs Kerry Robinson recently announced her retirement after an impressive 23 years with Scots All Saints College and The Scots School. Kerry was appointed to the teaching staff of The Scots School in 1998 and in 1999 was appointed to become Head of the Preparatory School. Kerry oversaw a period of growth in the school with numbers increasing from ten boys in its inaugural year in 1997, to 100 in co-educational classes in the early 2000s. Kerry presided over the school for much of the time, between 1999 and 2015 and was integral to establishing a strong, co-educational, independent K-6 schooling option for the people of Bathurst.
Mighty Minds Muster, Public Speaking and Keystone program. The Mighty Minds Muster involved gifted and talented students coming together from across the region for a day of challenges and enrichment whilst Keystone saw students from South Korea integrate into Junior School classes on an annual basis to enrich the cultural experience of our students. Kerry also played a key role in increasing student understanding of indigenous culture and life in a rural community via the Ngurra Jirrama Foundation which supported students from Ti Tree in the Northern Territory attending The Scots School for their secondary education.
Kerry is very fondly remembered by those who worked with her and those whom she taught and we give thanks for her many years of dedicated service and wish her well in her retirement.
In 2015, Kerry joined the Learning Support team and since that time has dedicated her time to building the literacy and numeracy skills of students across K-12.
Kerry was instrumental in initiating and overseeing a range of programs in the Junior School including the
