A conversation with the Head of College
upcoming major events
Mr John Weeks
Thanks to the College Foundation This week we formally announced the plans to develop a STEM-based Innovation Centre for our Junior and Middle School students. This has only been made possible through the support of the College Foundation which has made a $750,000 grant towards its development and construction. President of The Foundation, Mr Bruce Clydsdale and long serving Directors Mr John Cranfield, Mrs Shirley Burrow, Mrs Rosie Bayliss and Mrs Memory Sanders attended a special ceremony to hand over the ‘cheque’ and to symbolically commence the project which is planned for construction in 2020. Mr Clydsdale made the following remarks – “The Foundation was established in 1979 and due to the generous donations from many Alumni, parents and corporations, a capital fund was built up. Subsequent prudent investments meant that when approached by Mr Weeks the Directors voted unanimously to provide the necessary finance for this innovative development to proceed. “Since its inception, The Foundation has supported the construction and upgrading of many of the College’s educational facilities, as well as student support, and regard this project as its most significant contribution to the College. The Foundation’s past contributions can be found on the College website. “The Foundation has always been about the future by providing students and staff with the facilities to develop the skills and confidence to be able to contribute in a positive and meaningful way to the Australian and Global society. “It is therefore with great pleasure on behalf of the Foundation Directors that I am able to present this cheque to the Headmaster for the construction of the STEM Centre.” Again, we thank the Foundation for the generous support.

New Innovation Centre set to transform education by building future ready learners from an early age As a first for regional NSW schools, leading co-educational day and boarding College, Scots All Saints yesterday announced it will create a state-ofthe-art Innovation Centre. Students will be able to immerse themselves in experiences that combine and accelerate learning in STEM, Design, Technology, Nature, Growth and the Environment to build skills and knowledge to apply them to realworld problems. Head of College, Mr John Weeks was delighted to be able to announce the new Innovation Centre as the first of its kind in a school setting within regional NSW providing effective tools and training to transform education, bringing transdisciplinary problem-based learning into classrooms. “The Scots All Saints Innovation Centre brings world’s best practice in education to regional NSW, enabling our students to work collaboratively and develop knowledge to propel them into network pathways and long-term, future success as the next generation of community leaders,” Mr Weeks said. “Research shows the new basic skills needed by young people to engage in a complex world and navigate the challenges they will inherit are problem-solving, communication skills, digital learning, teamwork, critical thinking, creativity and financial literacy.
Other schools are doing this around the world, and we are pleased that our students will have a dedicated cutting-edge Innovation Centre and teachers who will have professional development to focus on skills needed beyond the 21st century,” Mr Weeks said. At the launch of the ground-breaking Innovation Centre project, Mr John Weeks was joined by President of the College Foundation, Mr Bruce Clydsdale who presented a $750,000 cheque as a significant investment to help fund the project. Mr Clydsdale spoke on behalf of College Foundation Members, many of whom are past students, teachers and staff from the former All Saints’ College, announcing their endorsement of the project and support of further growth of Scots All Saints College as a modern and progressive College of all-round excellence. “The College has a long history of innovation including Computing with the first interactive Classroom computer in 1975, teaching of Asian languages, and staff-designed Life Skills course in 1978 which is now almost identical to the PD/H/PE curriculum so the Foundation Directors voted unanimously to fund this new innovative development,” Mr Clydsdale said. Since the Foundation was established in 1979, with generous donations from students, staff and corporations, the Foundation has helped to upgrade many of the College’s educational facilities. continued page 2

2019 Years 5-12 Speech Day
Congratulations to the Stage 5 (Year 9 & 10) Drama Class for their outstanding performance last Saturday evening. Everyone loves a good Shakespeare play and as a staff we thoroughly enjoyed seeing our young people sharing their talents. We’re all looking forward to next year’s production! Thank you to Mr Morrisey for your input and for all the organisation that went on behind the scenes.
Speech Day will be Wednesday 4 December at BMEC, commencing at 10:00 am.
I am also aware that work has commenced on the 2020 Musical ‘Annie’ – best wishes to the students and staff who are involved. We’re certainly looking forward to another spectacular showcase of the talent in our College.
Hats Students have been reminded that they must be wearing a hat if they are outside in the sun. I have been pleased with the response and the increased number of hats being worn in the playground. Please note that all Senior School students should own and be wearing a formal College hat to and from school.
Examinations The HSC Examinations are continuing and will run through until Week 5. We are very happy with how the exams are progressing and the positive feedback from students as they exit the hall after an exam. Some of our students are very close to completing all their scheduled exams and we wish them God’s blessing as they leave us to pursue further study and/ or employment. Year 9 and 10 examinations commence Wednesday 6 November and run through until Tuesday 12 November. It is free and a wonderful opportunity to develop some great skills and to contribute to the community. We thank the volunteers (Jim, Brett and Sam) from the O’Connell RFS for leading the program and giving up their time to run the program.
Cadets Term 4 Please be advised that Army Cadets for Term 4 remains voluntary. There will not be a Ceremonial Parade for all Cadets at the end of the term. For those who are not continuing with Cadets in Term 4 please return all of your Cadet uniform. Please place clean and olded Cadet uniforms with your boots and bush hats in a plastic bag. Write your name clearly on the bag and return to the veranda outside the new Cadet Q store (shed behind the Maths and HSIE block) before school, at recess or at lunch time within the next 2 weeks. The uniforms will be cleared and stored away each afternoon. Students who do not return their Cadet uniforms will be charged for them. Rural Fire Service Cadets Last Thursday some of our Rural Fire Service Cadets travelled to Oberon High School for the Chifley and Lithgow Zone RFS Cadets Field Day and Graduation. Our RFS Cadets completed a 10-week training program in Terms 1 and 2 where they learned valuable skills in Bush Fire management and control. They also developed teamwork, communication and safety skills. The students had the privilege of using half a million dollars’ worth of RFS fire truck and equipment and learning how to operate it. At the Field Day the students competed against students from Oberon High and the Carenne School in four firefighting challenge events where they tested themselves against other cadet teams and the clock. The events included a hose and hydrant challenge, relay pumping, a knapsack relay and a bucket brigade challenge. Our team of Simi Atluri, Tom McCumstie, Campbell Roweth and Samantha Edwards won all of the events other than the relay pumping, where a turned off fuel switch on the portable pump and surrounding confusion cost them valuable time and points. The team went on to win the Field Day. Many of our students use the volunteer RFS program to learn skills that they

Scots All Saints College (All Saints Campus) has decided to get on board with this special event and we are asking parents for their help. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the All Saints Campus is taking part in the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Up Your Town, an incredible initiative in which communities come together to ‘Pink Up’ to raise funds for McGrath Breast Care Nurses and create a visual show of support for local families experiencing breast cancer. Scots All Saints College is proud to be taking part in such a wonderful cause and it’s brilliant to see the community coming together to show their support. Bathurst is a wonderful place to live and supporting the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Up Your Town is a beautiful reminder of how generous and enthusiastic our community members are. McGrath Breast Care Nurses make such a wonderful difference so we are proud to be contributing towards placing more nurses in communities across Australia.” One in seven women across Australia will receive a breast cancer diagnosis before the age of 85 and approximately 164 i Australian men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer this year . About the McGrath Foundation Ours is a story with simple – but well-known – beginnings. It started with Jane and Glenn McGrath’s very public experience with breast cancer and has become one of Australia’s most recognised and respected charities - The McGrath Foundation. Some years after her initial diagnosis, Jane’s cancer returned. This time, she had a breast care nurse, who both empowered and comforted her and the entire family. This experience set the mission for the Foundation, which has become an enduring commitment to support thousands of women and men every day, no matter where they live – for free. We raise funds to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia and increase breast health understanding. While more than 75,000 families have been supported by 135 McGrath Breast Care Nurses, there’s still a lot more to do to reach every family going through breast cancer. We rely on the heartfelt support we receive from all over Australia – including individuals, communities, corporate partners and government. They help by donating, hosting or attending events, or purchasing McGrath Foundation products, which helps us continue Jane’s legacy and achieve our mission.

20 year reunion – Alumni visit Scots Campus It was a delight to welcome a group of 11 past students who graduated in 1999 to tour Scots Campus last weekend. There were comments on how much has changed since they left the school. There was a special request to see the mural that was painted on the wall at the back of the Art Room by some of the class of ’99 when they were in Year 10. It is still there! Joining the tour was the former Principal and Chairman of the Board Adrian Lamrock, father of Edwina. The group also welcomed current staff members Mr Ian Doney, Mr Simon Dundon and Mrs Cath Dundon. In 1999, Mr Dundon was Housemaster of Thompson House, and it was therefore fitting that he should be accompanied by Mrs Catherine Dundon, who in 1999 worked at All Saints' College at the time. A special memorabilia display of photos and past publications were made available in the Library. Thanks go to these staff for joining the tour and to Mrs Cate Mitchell for allowing the Library to be used for a PowerPoint display of photographs from 1999 and a small exhibition of memorabilia. In the evening, the group was met for dinner in Bathurst by some other members of the cohort who had not been able to join the tour. Mr Andrew Maher
