A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
It’s been a great week! It has been a very exciting week for everyone to return to school and catch up after the school lockdown period. It was wonderful to see our campuses buzzing with the sights and sounds of young people playing, talking, and just enjoying each other’s company. While we are now back on campus there are still a number of requirements which are specific to schools. The latest guidelines from government are provided: https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-forfamilies Fortunately many of these are being further relaxed and this will continue now that our region has hit the 80% vaccination target. For example, you will read about the return of school sport from next week. The Year 12 Farewell Dinner, post HSC examinations on the 2nd December, can now have double the number of guests from 200 to 400.
As you may have heard/read, this has already been the case in many schools across the state and locally. If this occurs, under the guidance of NSW Health, set procedures kick in. In brief, all parents will be alerted individually, the relevant College campus will be temporarily closed (approx. 48 hours), cleaning takes place, and close contacts are informed following the contact tracing methodology. Any positive cases or close contacts are to be isolated depending on various issues such as proximity to the positive case, individuals' vaccination status, etc. We are well prepared should such a notification occur. As I write, it’s all systems go!
As the key restrictions change, we will keep you up-todate. Should the ‘unthinkable’ occur, and we have a positive COVID-19 case – NSW Health will officially notify the College. Campus East (Scots) Senior School, Boarding (Years 9-12) 4173 O’Connell Road BATHURST NSW 2795

From the Chaplain Rev. Michael Bennett Chaplain
Psalm 139 – You are wonderfully made! For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 13
King David (1000BC) shares some big ideas in the opening verses of Psalm 139. Firstly, he says that God knows each one of us intimately. He then shares that our natural reaction to this is to run away from Him, even into darkness and despair. His third point is that there is nowhere we can go that is not in His presence. Looking at the next verses (13-14), David now explains why God knows us so well. It is not just that he has physically created us, but that he has created our ‘inmost being’ – our personality, character and soul.

As David comes to terms with this idea, his rebellious attitude evaporates as he realises God’s deep love and connection with him. David surrenders his pride and ends up praising God. It is interesting to note that David praises God because he recognises that we are extraordinary beings, ‘wonderfully made’, and the pinnacle of God’s creation (Genesis 1&2). Here we see the beauty of God. We are, as individuals and as a community, extraordinary. Our potential to build up, create beauty, love, care, and reflect God’s image is unequalled throughout all creation. And, yet, there is a darker side to our character that we all struggle with, where we disappoint ourselves. Sometimes we can feel like giving up on ourselves, but God remains faithful. As David reflects upon the ugliness of his own life (reflected in his need to run away), he realises that there is forgiveness and love in embracing God (vs14, I praise you). This praise is because God’s ‘works are wonderful’ and ‘I know that full well’, because David, like you and I, is one of those glorious works. Amen

Careers Advice Mrs Helen Jones Career Development Officer
Careers & Jobs How to ask people about their jobs Is there a job out there you think you would absolutely love? It's hard to know exactly what a job is like unless you have hands-on experience. Unfortunately, this isn’t always possible. But you can do the next best thing – ask someone! Why should I ask someone about their job? Getting advice on a career you’re interested in is always a smart move. You can find out a lot you might not know, like pathways into the career, the ups and the downs, daily tasks, industry insights, and a whole lot more. Then you can use this valuable info to help steer you in the right direction. Think about what you learned and weigh up your options – is this still something you’d want to do, or has your perspective changed? It can also help you think about things you can do right now to get closer to your goal. It’s always helpful to get more than one perspective, too (if possible). So talk to as many people as you can. What should I ask? Here are some questions that you might like to ask to get the most out of the experience: • What does a normal day look like? • What’s your favourite (and least favourite) part of your job? • How did you get this job? • Is this what you wanted to do when you were younger? • Do you have any advice for someone looking to get into the industry? It’s important to consider how well you know the person you’re asking, and remember that some things could be inappropriate to ask (such as asking how much money someone makes). Finally, don’t forget to Keep in touch – send the person a letter or email thanking them for their time and effort. This could be your chance to make a valuable connection for the future. All Things Sport Mr Mark Wilkinson Sports Administrator
Last Friday afternoon an email was sent to families with an update regarding the College’s involvement in community sport. The ink on that letter had barely dried before we received another update from the Department of Education at the start of this week. Here is an excerpt: From Monday, 1 November, school sport can resume on site, schools can utilise external sport facilities in line with community sport guidelines, and schools can engage in inter-school sport outside of school hours. In short, we’re set to resume our participation in community sport. As you’re probably guessing, there are restrictions. Schools in the Bathurst LGA are currently operating under Level 3+ restrictions. These restrictions stipulate that students must remain separated in their year and / or stage groups. Obviously this will affect our training sessions to a degree as well as a number of our teams where players come from different year groups – but in the scheme of things, this is a small bump in the road. From a sporting perspective, our main priority in Term 4 is to get our young athletes back on the courts, fields and ovals as safely as possible. To do this, we’ll need the co-operation of our players, officials and families as we follow the COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines for the recommencement of school sport. These restrictions include but are not limited to: • Everyone 16 and over will be required to be double vaccinated in order to play community sport, spectate and attend community sporting venues before 1 December, 2021. • Providing proof of vaccination when requested by association and venue staff members • Adhering to social distancing protocols • Wearing face masks at indoor venues • Using the QR code check-in system when arriving and departing departing community sporting venues

Here’s a brief update on the various competitions we’ll be participating in this 21/22 Summer season. Please note that more detailed information will be sent in our Season Information Letters. These will be sent as soon as we have season draws confirmed. Cricket – The BDJCA competition is scheduled to start on Friday 29 October. As we’re unable to participate before 1 November, the association has kindly scheduled our SASC teams byes or games against fellow SASC teams, as well as fixtures against St Stanislaus College which we can catch up at a later date in the season. Our Master Blaster sessions will commence on Friday 5 November. While our BDJCA Saturday morning competition for our U10s through to Opens teams will commence on Saturday 6 November. Basketball – The Bathurst Basketball Association competition is scheduled to start on Wednesday 4 November with our Years 4–6. Our Opens teams will start their season on Thursday 5 November. While our Years 7–11 teams will start on Friday 6 November. Touch Football – Our first round of the Bathurst Touch Football Association competition will be on Monday 8 November. Tennis – The ISA will not be facilitating any sporting events for the remainder of Term 4. We can however run a WAS competition with our friends at St Stanislaus College and Kinross Wolaroi School for the remainder of Term 4. This will commence on Saturday 6 November and follow the same format as the ISA competition which will recommence in Term 1, 2022. So that’s where we’re sitting at this point in time. Obviously we may be thrown some curve balls as our seasons progress but we’ll continue to do our best to adapt and let you know of these changes as soon as possible. Thanks again for your patience and support as we attempt to get our young athletes back into competition. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Activities aim to promote student wellbeing This week, we welcomed all of our Junior School classes back to face to face learning. To help students settle back in, each day, our Junior School classes will engage in an activity that aims to promote emotional wellbeing, resilience and recovery. Each day, students will have a different ‘value’ to focus on. Yesterday, students created a ‘We can Paper Chain.’ On each chain, students recorded skills they didn’t realise they had until they started learning from home. Students can look forward to a new activity each day this week. Mr Anthony Roohan
