Student Wellbeing Mr Tom van Gend Head of Student Wellbeing K-12
STUDY SKILLS TIPS – how to stay positive as exams (or any challenging situations) approach It can be difficult to stay positive or 'be up' as exams approach. The more important we perceive the exam to be, the more stress we can feel. While feeling some stress can be positive and help us get motivated to study, we all have a tipping point. When our stress levels reach our personal tipping point, this higher level of stress can lead to inaction, where we avoid doing the work necessary to be prepared and as a result feel even more overwhelmed. If not dealt with, the stress can build and lead to anxiety and depression.
scenarios that have little to no substance. If it’s something that can’t be changed bring acceptance to it, but if it can be changed, take action. EMOTIONS: To help yourself feel more positive every day think of three good things that happened that day and how they made you feel. Also take the focus off yourself and do three simple but deliberate acts of kindness every day. It might be a kind word, a compliment, helping someone or surprising someone with a kind act. You will be amazed at how making other people feel better lifts your mood as well.
The key to being positive and managing negative emotions like anxiety or feeling down and depressed in any pressure situation including exams is to 'fuel up'. It goes without saying that if we are exhausted, tired, stressed, depressed etc. it is very difficult, if not impossible, to deal with the pressure of exams. 'Fuelling up' is about boosting wellbeing factors in your life. You need to boost the wellbeing factors in your BODY, MIND and EMOTIONS.
ATTENTION ALL YEAR 7 SCIENTISTS The Annual TAS Forensic Science Camp will be held in Armidale during July 2020. Please see details below. Contact Mr Cant if you are interested in applying.
BODY: Put your health first and eat healthily, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. We all know what to do, but we need to make the decision to prioritise our own wellbeing. Without the right fuel you will feel exhausted and depleted and it is very hard to be positive when you aren’t feeling your best. MIND: To think more positively, challenge your perceptions. Write down your top 5 fears and worries. What’s the worst thing that can happen? How valid are these fears? Usually fears and worries are not based on reality but on imagined

Vale Anthony ‘Tony’ McLaughlin On Wednesday, 30 October a memorial service was held in Newcastle for a past teacher of ASC Tony McLaughlin. Tony was a much loved member of the All Saints’ family for 15 years (1986-2001) and during this time taught English, History, Drama, coached cricket, rugby, tennis, produced and directed numerous school plays and staff melodramas. Tony was remembered by his students and colleagues with deep affection as many were present on the day. The memorial service was a celebration of his life as his family Anne, Liz, Georgie, Kath, brother Michael and an ex-student Fran Cole gave tribute to him for the many who attended. “A dynamic, creative and memorable teacher, a valued educator and mentor, a source of inspiration, fun and energy to his colleagues, students and friends, Tony was widely loved.”

Earlier in the year, the Performing Arts team launched the Amadeus Academy. Students selected to be members of the academy will be performing at the inaugural Amadeus Academy Recital on Tuesday, 19 November at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Centre on Scots Campus. The evening will celebrate the musical achievements of our most talented musicians. Students have been busy preparing ensemble and solo items to showcase their abilities. Each musician has been developing their understanding of their role within the ensemble, how to listen and play as developing musicians, how to add musicality to a performance and the role of the soloist. We look forward to sharing a wonderful evening of music with everyone in the school community. We encourage all those wanting to experience the talents of our students in the academy to come along for a wonderful night of performance. Ms Liz Sargeant, Amadeus Academy

Congratulations to the Junior School students who performed in The Jungle Book musical last Friday night, 1 November. Wolves, elephants, monkeys, bees and vultures came alive to portray the events of the man cub, Mowgli, and provide an evening of wonderful entertainment. The students came together after many practices and dress rehearsals to perform well known items such as ‘Trust in Me’, ‘The Bare Necessities’ and ‘I Wan’na Be Like You’. It was a wonderful night of song and dance and the participation of the each and every student was extraordinary. The students worked hard to learn their lines, songs and the dance moves to bring the production together. It was wonderful to see the confidence build in each

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President
There are so many worthy groups and programs to support drought-affected families, it can be challenging to support some and not others. However, the P&F have done their research and identified ‘The Ladies of the Land in NSW’ and #Buyfromthebush to focus efforts of the College community this Christmas. ‘Buy from the Bush’ is a campaign that is growing as a community movement to encourage all Australians to buy produce, goods and services from local and regional businesses who may also be facing financial hardship due to the drought. A Facebook page @BuyFromTheBush helps to “showcase beautiful things to buy from rural communities facing drought. A small way to invest in their future…” Any help and support you can provide to these worthy causes or any others you have identified will go a long way to making a difference within our regional communities. Scots All Saints College P&F would love to receive donations, so we can lovingly create boxes, supporting Ladies of the Land in NSW this Christmas. Donations can be delivered to Reception on either the Scots or All Saints Campuses. Please clearly label when delivering what your items are for – Ladies of the Land. We have been doing jobs at home so as to purchase some useful gifts through the TEAR Aus Foundation for children overseas. This group have chosen to buy chickens.
Fine Motor fun. Firing pompoms from our shark shooters.
In Pre-K, we love to engage children in reallife learning. In Literacy, Pre-K RED have loved having other students come to read to us, we have been writing books with our buddies and are doing so amazingly with our own phonemic awareness. The children showed outstanding enthusiasm and fine motor skills for sewing. Our health literacy led to eagerness to do extra jobs at home to raise money to buy ‘Useful Gifts’ for children overseas. In STEM children showed care and interest in raising seedlings and sunflowers and of course the best way to learn the mathematical concept of quarters was through the making and cutting of fairy bread. Core Learning areas Bilateral coordination is needed to are so much fun! paint and spin at the same time.

International students' excursion to Jenolan Caves
On Wednesday 23 October the International students in Years 9–11 went to Jenolan Caves. This was planned as a cultural activity for us to see some of the Australian natural landscape. It took two hours by bus to get to the caves. Mr Randall, our driver, took us via the Brewongle Road. On the way we saw beautiful farms, kangaroos and dirt roads. It was very windy. When we got to the caves we had morning tea. Mrs Nelson made cakes for us to eat with our fruit and juice. After morning tea we had a walk along the blue lake and saw some lizards and the beautiful colour of the water. Next we walked through Lucas Cave. We listened to the guide and learnt about the caves. We saw awesome limestone rocks and listened to music in the Cathedral area. We enjoyed the amazing beauty of the cave
