A conversation with the Head of College
upcoming major events
Mr John Weeks
CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE! 2019 will always be a significant year in the life of Scots All Saints College. It has been our inaugural year under the one banner of “All for Christ” and we have much to be grateful for. During the Senior School assembly this week I encouraged our students and staff to reflect on the year that is almost over and all that they have done and all that has been achieved. As I reminded them it was only back in late January that everyone came together to begin the new academic year under a new, two campus structure with a combined Junior and Middle School on All Saints Campus and the Senior School and Boarding community based on the Scots Campus. Many students and many members of staff had to make adjustments and navigate new arrangements. Fast forward to today, the reality is that day, back in January, is but a dim memory. We have all been so involved, focused and busy building new friendships, creating new opportunities, putting in place new programmes that it feels like we have been together for a very long time! As we head into the Christmas season with our focus on God’s gift of Christ to the world, it’s important to be grateful for the many blessings which are bestowed upon us. We celebrate a very successful first year together as the Scots All Saints Community and can look forward to the future with confidence. To all parents, students, staff, members of Council, The Foundation, members of the OBU and Scots Past Students’ Association, The Presbyterian Church and volunteers we thank and congratulate you for the wonderful support you have given to ensure the success of Scots All Saints College in 2019. Looking to the future… "The best is yet to be"! Might you, your family and friends know the love of God, through the gift of Christ, as you celebrate this Christmas together. Senior School Mrs Tracey Leaf Head of Scots Campus / Director of Senior School & Boarding
As I write this final 2019 column for The Roar, I am amazed at how quickly this academic year has passed. It is with much gratitude that I acknowledge the tremendous work done by my colleagues during this first year of Scots All Saints College. Likewise, I wish to acknowledge the efforts of our Senior School students who have approached this year with a ‘can do’ attitude and helped make it a successful year. Every day our wonderful young people remind us why we chose careers in education; their youthful enthusiasm and hope inspire us all. On behalf of the Senior School Staff, I wish to thank the parents who gave their support in a variety of ways throughout the year. Your patience in regards to the work we needed to do throughout this journey and your understanding of the many changes that we all needed to navigate, have been greatly appreciated by all of us. I pray that as we conclude this academic year that you will have a wonderful Christmas with your families.
May each one of us take the time to reflect on and thank God for the many blessings our community has received in 2019. We look forward to seeing our students back in class on Monday 30 January 2020! To the students and families leaving us at the conclusion of this year, I wish to thank you for your contributions to our learning community. We wish you well in your future endeavours, wherever that may be. CHRISTMAS ASSEMBLY Please join us for our ‘Christmas Assembly’, Monday 2 December 10:00 am – 11:00 am, Aikman Hall. Year 10 Camp
As the 2019 Foundation Year comes to an end we wish to thank the students, staff and parents for their support of the co-curricular programs of the College. It has been an exceptional first year with loads of great achievements and a lot of new friendships formed. We have learned much and expect to build on the successes of this year in the years to come. The co-curricular program is only as strong and diverse as it is due to the contributions and commitments from our students, staff and external providers. We look forward to the 2020 school year and encourage our students to become involved in as much as they can.
Our Year 10s have been hiking through the Snowy Mountains this week. It no doubt will be a challenge to many of the students but a very rewarding experience for them all. We look forward to the safe return of the students and staff.
Fast 5 Netball Congratulations to the Prefects (Samantha, Zoe and Holly) who led the Fast 5 netball fundraiser last Wednesday evening. We also thank the other Prefects for their support and the students that joined in the fun. It would be remiss of me to not report on the victory that the staff netball team had over the Year 12s. What a team! New Zealand Cricket Tour We wish the boys going to New Zealand for the Queenstown Cricket Carnival in late January next year best wishes and safe travels. The boys and staff are really looking forward to the tour. We hope to have some social media reports for you to follow. Co-curricular Awards Assembly On Tuesday 3 December from 1:30 pm in the Aikman Hall we will have an inaugural co-curricular awards assembly for the Senior Campus. We like to recognise the achievements of our students in co-curricular programs and give them goals for future years. We have developed a new co-curricular awards policy this year and hope to build on it in future years. As this is our first year as Scots All Saints College we will start the recognition of our students’ achievements from the beginning of this year. In 2020, we ask the students to support any new badges presented and wear them proudly on either of the former school’s blazers or

From the P&F Mr Grant Baker P&F President
I can’t believe this is the last edition of The Roar for 2019. The year has gone so fast, with much change as the College has progressed with its Foundation Year. Year 8 Valedictory Dinner Last week, as a Year 8 parent I attended a celebration for the inaugural Year 8 valedictorians completing Middle School. The evening gave me an opportunity to catch up with old friends, and to meet new ones. The main thing that it showed me was that we enjoy each other's company, sharing stories and a laugh. Held at Bathurst Panthers, we were all welcomed by Head of All Saints Campus, Mr Jackman, before enjoying a meal and being entertained by the very talented Year 8 contemporary band and other music students. The core teachers each spoke kindly of their class, and a response was provided by a class student. These students spoke with fondness and light heartedly of their teacher and their class, and this made it clear to me that things are on the right track within the Middle School. The evening finished off with a laugh as all of us parents with two left feet were dragged to the dance floor by our kids for a dance, and those with a left and right foot did a better job of dancing to music that was much more to our liking. P and F Meeting The last P and F meeting for the year was held last night, with a full attendance from the committee as I commenced my first term as President. As a new committee there were many agenda items to discuss, with significant time devoted to strategic matters as we prepare for 2020, including how we might improve communications, and undertake social events that will bring the College community together. With an enthusiastic Committee that is prepared to work alongside the College, we are looking forward to delivering upon a new single event later in 2020. We will be looking for parent support to help develop the event early in the New Year. Watch this space. There are some outstanding projects for the P and F to deliver upon in 2020, and we will be working with the College to bring these to realisation in a timely manner, early in Term 1.

All Saints Campus Pre-K, Junior School (Years K–4), Middle School (Years 5-8) 70 Eglinton Road BATHURST NSW 2795
2020 will be an exciting year, as we start to shape the P and F vision, and work with the College on its vision for the future, which already looks exciting with the recent announcement about the Innovation Centre on the All Saints Campus. I was delighted to hear of the positive response to the Boarder P and F meeting that trialed online conferencing earlier this week, with a great response from our rural families. This was a great example of using technology to get this community together, and discuss boarding related matters with the school executive. Speech Day 2019 Next week, I look forward to seeing many of you at the annual speech day at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC). The first for our new college, I expect it to be a big event. If last year is anything to go by, BMEC will be packed to the rafters with staff, students, parents and friends, and will offer an opportunity to listen to some amazing musicians and to celebrate the academic, musical and sporting prowess of our kids. Ladies of the Land in NSW Remember you still have a few days to deliver donations to Reception at either of our Bathurst Campuses by Friday 6 December. Last time I spoke of the tragedy of the bushfires, which continue to devastate vast areas of NSW. But what is now also impacting all of us, even in Bathurst is the relentless dust in the atmosphere, carried by strong winds from the drought affected areas to the west. I cannot begin to imagine the amount of topsoil being taken from the parched properties of our families, especially those of our boarders. Remember to drive with your lights on to ensure you can be seen through the dust, and please stay safe. Christmas is a time to spend with family, and celebrate everything that we have. Despite the holidays, remember that if you have any questions, the P&F Committee is here to help, even if it is only to direct you to the right person. Please contact me via email on president.sascpfa@outlook. com On behalf of the P&F Committee, I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas, and look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Year 7 French students return to the Junior School It was back to K - Year 2 for Year 7 students as they dazzled the younger ones with their growing command of French language. The older students sponsored a sense of school comradery as they read and spoke in French to their fellow students. Sometimes, to my amusement, they were corrected on pronunciation and interpretation by their younger budding linguists. If we teach them when they are young of all the fun of learning another language it will become part of their life fabric. In 2020 we will offer to interested in Year 7 and 8 students, a chance to become involved in a new initiative at Scots All Saints College; a French Radio/Television station broadcasting onto the school website. Visit from 'The Bone Lady of Pompeii' - Dr Estelle Lazer The plaster casts from Pompeii of the victims of the 79 AD eruption of Mt Vesuvius are a unique and well-recognised symbol of that disaster. One of the world’s leading authorities on the human remains from Pompeii, is an Australian, Dr Estelle Lazer. The College has been particularly fortunate to have had groups tour the ruins in the company of Dr Lazer. As part of the tour package, Academy Travel sent Dr Lazer to the school to deliver a lecture, which was attended by a number of current and former Ancient History students, parents and staff. Pompeii is the core topic for the HSC course in Ancient History. Dr Lazer’s work in Pompeii began with a study of the disarticulated skeletons of victims of the 79 AD eruption. She became known as 'The Bone Lady of Pompeii'.
Dr Lazer wondered what skeletal remains might be found in the plaster casts, and as improvements in x-ray technology have permitted, she has undertaken detailed studies of them. As well as learning more about the people in the casts, Dr Lazer has also found out some interesting details of how 19th and 20th Century restorers made them. She has appeared in television documentaries that have been shown on SBS television, hosted by Professor Mary Beard and Dr. Bettany Hughes. Dr Lazer was able to discuss some very recent archaeological work undertaken in Pompeii. Her background includes physical anthropology, and this has informed her studies of the Pompeii remains. As well as her rigorous scholarship, Dr Lazer also has the ability to
communicate her material clearly. As, such, everybody in the audience enjoyed the lecture immensely." Mr Andrew Maher

Hugh Argent-Smith Captain Scarface emerged onto the deck, his wooden leg dragging along the deck, sending splinters flying in every direction. His eyes wandered over the faces of the crew, his mouth set in a permanent scowl. His torn blue coat, silver earring and gold tooth showed his power and authority. His arms, legs and face were marred with scars that were the souvenirs from many battles he had won. The dark, black eye patch over his right eye stared at you as much as his one good eye and the black band was covered by shoulder length, ratted black hair. Jessica Mills The room burst into life as he came thundering like a storm through the house in his brown, mud-spattered boots. His eyes were deep blue with just the hint of a cheeky sparkle. He wore a tattered green work shirt encased in mud and matching ripped, faded jeans. He was in a mischievous mood that could easily break into a fiery anger. He moved through the house and flopped himself onto the couch. Zanthie Hewett Lord Farquaad was an incredibly short man with a very large personality. He wore the nicest clothes decorated with golden buttons and velvet frills. His short black hair, that fell just above his shoulders, always seemed to shine. When he walked, he bounced and held his large head up high. His face always looked as though he had just eaten something incredibly sour and his eyes became daggers if you ever made direct eye contact with him. The only time his expression changed was when it shifted from disgust to an evil smile. Megan Cooke Arnold the artist was a very shy man who kept everything to himself. He had few friends as he continually travelled around the world, trying to get inspiration for his art. Arnold wore cracked glasses, a big green overcoat, rainbow trousers and black boots. Although he was bald, he had a moustache. Arnold was a tall, skinny man. He was lonely and all he had was his artworks, his suitcase and himself. Harriet Lowe His face was round and he walked like an over-sized bear. He had a short, stumpy body and pointed hands. He liked jackets and blue suits and red and blue ties. Joshua Kidd

Fast 5 Netball Tournament – by the students, for the students Last Wednesday the Social Justice and Co-curricular Prefects ran a Fast 5 Netball tournament to raise money for the charity ‘Rural Aid’. The primary aim of the event was to provide an avenue for the school community to help those affected by the current, widespread drought across Australia. However, it also worked as a way to welcome the 2020 Year 9s onto the senior campus and continue the transition process for them following their orientation day on Monday. Support for the event was outstanding with fourteen teams entering the competition, equating to approximately ninety students. Due to the high participation rate the tournament was split into a senior division (Years 10 - 11) and a junior division (Years 8 - 9). We thank all the teams for the energy they brought to the afternoon and we hope that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to our winners: Best dressed team - The Veggies Winner Junior Division - Skippy’s Players & Liam’s Team Winner Senior Division - Vote 1 Harry Dickenson

The event ended with a friendly exhibition match between Year 12 and the teachers. The teachers came out victorious, however the students can blame this loss on fatigue...they had already played netball all afternoon! We thank the teachers for giving up their time to show support for this cause and provide some healthy competition. We hope this tradition can continue into the future. Overall, the effort put in by everybody involved in the event meant that $500 was raised for Rural Aid. A remarkable achievement that will hopefully ease the burden of the drought for some families. A big thank you must go to Mr Adams for helping coordinate the event, Mr van Gend for cooking the barbecue and his organisation, to those who contributed to the cake stall, to the umpires and scorers and most importantly to the students who took part. The event would not have been the success it was without all of you. Mr Tom Van Gend, Head of Student Wellbeing K-12
