A conversation with the Head of College Mr John Weeks
Gathering Under the Stars It was a fantastic opportunity for almost 300 of us to gather together at Abercrombie House last Saturday. Not many stars this year with the thunder and lightning and rain! Nonetheless, it was an exceptional night for members of our far-flung community to come together and catch up again after the past two years of COVID-19 restrictions. Ours is a growing community bringing together parents, College staff, past students, members of the Council and lifelong supporters. Thank you for your attendance, and we look forward to many more ‘gatherings’ in the post-covid era! To our organisers, Amanda Kemp and Gemma Green, a big thank you for putting it all together… you did an exceptional job and to Lauren Cant, Year 12, who performed all night (under difficult circumstances), you were awesome. Next Rapid Antigen Home Test (RAHT) distribution The NSW Department of Education has provided the College with new Rapid Antigen Home Testing kits, which will be distributed over the next few days. These will come home with your child in their bag. During the first four weeks of Term 1, surveillance testing was underway involving students testing with RAHTs twice a week. This has since moved to symptomatic testing for the remainder of Term 1, and an additional five tests will be provided to each child. If your child has symptoms of COVID-19, please keep them at home and undertake testing. Regardless of the test result, symptomatic children need to be kept at home until their symptoms have resolved. Thank you for your support. Scots All Saints P&F Meeting Our first on-site, face-to-face meeting will be held on the Junior School Campus in the Kemmis Hall on Wednesday, 16 March 2022. Join us in person or via Zoom from 5:30 pm. The rowing challenge – sponsor a House!
2. Give through the school to the ‘Soup Kitchen’, using the same bank details as the one through which you pay fees, using the reference ‘[House Name] Soup Kitchen’ (eg. Cuthbert Soup Kitchen or Booth Soup Kitchen). Then email me the amount you gave and the House name you support and I'll add it to the House tally.
Last week Mr Weeks mentioned in The Roar that the ‘Rowing Challenge’ is being held on Sunday, 27 March (6:00 am to 6:00 pm) at the school’s Sports Centre (Senior School Campus). The point of the challenge is for students to do something aspirational that raises money for those doing it tough. The House Captains (Booth, Cowan, Cuthbert, Dunlop and Mawson) have done a great job organising their teams so that they can row for 12 hours (approximately 100km or more). The hope is that through sponsorship, they can raise money for the flood victims as well as for Hope Care Café (Soup Kitchen) meals that the Year 12 students serve each Tuesday.
3. Cash donations will be distributed between the Soup Kitchen and the Red Cross: There will be a sausage sizzle on the day being run by the Mawson House captains. Families can purchase some food and also give a cash donation. Just write the House name on the envelope and this shall be added to the House tally and distributed.
Some of the students have been training after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for almost a month (see picture) in preparation for the challenge.
Blessings, Chaplain Bennett
I look forward to your support and sharing this experience with our student body, which shall become a memorable achievement for all those involved. My email: Michael.bennett@scotsallsaints.nsw.edu.au

We have set an ambitious fundraising goal of $10,000. To start the ball rolling, so to speak, a parent shared at the ‘Evening Under the Stars’ parent event that they would give $1 for every dollar each House raised – up to a total of $1,000 per House ($5,000 in all). I would be thrilled if you could support this challenge, our students, and more particularly those doing it tough – i.e. the poor and flood victims. 1. Give directly to the ‘Red Cross Flood Appeal’, then email me with the amount you gave and the House you support (Booth, Cowan, Cuthbert, Dunlop and Mawson). I shall add it to the House tally. HICES Swimming Carnival
Even in their first term of formal schooling, they could tell me ways they would help their friends in the playground or in the classroom. Research tells us that supporting students and their wellbeing helps them feel happy and safe at school. In turn, students who feel happy and safe are in the best position to learn and make the most of all the opportunities available to them. Congratulations to all the kindy students who are learning to be kind and respectful to their new friends in the Junior School!
On Monday this week, I had the pleasure of accompanying the Junior School Swimming team at the Heads of Independent Co-Educational School (HICES) Swimming Carnival at the Sydney Aquatic Centre at Homebush. Although our swimmers had some fantastic results in the pool, what impressed me most was the positive and responsible way they represented the school. A parent from another school, who must have had an interaction with one of our students at the marshalling area, made a point of letting me know how respectful and polite the Scots All Saints student was to them. I congratulate the students for their fine performances in the pool and also for being fine ambassadors for the College. Mufti Day This week the Year 6 students leaders organised a Mufti Day to raise donations for the Red Cross Flood Appeal. I was approached by a number of the Year 6 student leaders last week with the idea and was very pleased with their initiative. Thank you to everyone who sent in a donation. $712.00 was raised for the appeal.

Kindness in Kindy On Monday, I visited Kindergarten and saw how they are incorporating our pastoral care program, Bounce Back, into their classrooms and helping to build a positive school culture. This week the Kindergarten students were talking about kindness. They read a story about being kind and listened to and sang along with a song about being kind to everyone. Without doubt, my favourite part was listening to the students each give examples of how they have been kind, and when others have shown kindness to them. Year 10 Work Experience 2022 The College recognises the importance of workplace learning and supports work experience. With many companies operating near full capacity, more opportunities are opening up. Work Experience is not compulsory but strongly encouraged. Our insurance covers most industries, and you can do this anywhere in Australia (but if you travel, that will be at the students' expense and they must have a guardian with them). If you would like to participate in the program. the process is this: 1. Think about what you would like to do 2. Find a host employer (ring or email) 3. Check dates - that they suit both the host employer and do not clash with any school assessments 4. Complete the Work Experience Paperwork (See Ms Jones for a copy) 5. Have approved by the College Boarders will need to find their placement in or around their hometowns. (Thus they go home for work experience) I will be working with Year 10 during their careers lessons on this, but please do not hesitate to contact me directly to discuss if you would like any further information. PwC Virtual Case Experience Our Virtual Case Experience is an interactive online platform providing virtual work experience to students. You will work on simulated client projects virtually, from wherever you are and on your own time. In addition, you will get instructions from real PwC staff to master the virtual client case and experience what we do and how we help our clients firsthand. You can complete these programmes in your own time at your own pace and earn a certificate after completing the programme.

It was a great chance for the students to ‘see’ the fungi we used in our experiments this term and understand its actual size and how it reproduces. Thank you Mrs Pearce! Seven Weeks of Rehearsal Complete! Written by Jai Valabjee - Year 10 It has been a great opportunity to be part of a community of gifted and unique individuals during the rehearsals leading up to the musical Matilda. The cast and everyone involved has brought a positive attitude and applied a great work ethic to the rehearsals for the Term 2 musical, Matilda. We have rehearsals three days a week from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm. They are also sometimes needed during weekends and the term break to practise all aspects of running the show. Each day, different cast members are needed, and we work as a team in choreography, vocals, and acting to bring the show alive from script to a fullon production! We started a week before the school term began and attended four crucial days, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, where we learnt to sing the songs that most of the cast were involved in. In recent weeks, we individually practised our parts and performed together, through the first act and some of the second. We were all pleased with the rate at which we learnt our parts and roles and exceeded the goals that we planned to meet.

There will be six shows for the musical, which will be held from Wednesday, 4 May until Saturday, 7 May (Term 2, Week 2). They will be performed at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC). The cast is getting very excited as we move closer to running parts of the show and performing under the stage lights. Most importantly, I’d like to thank the Producer, Mr Clipsham, the Music Director, Ms Sargeant, the Director, Ms Bate, the Choreographers, Ed and Mrs Casey and the Stage Manager, Mr Sinclair, for coordinating the rehearsals and putting together this musical despite the obstacles that were faced. Make sure to keep your eye on the upcoming editions of The Roar for when ticket sales are open; come and see our version of the musical, Matilda, performed by our talented cast. 2022 R.M. Williams RAS Rural Achiever Award finalist Agriculture, HSIE and Tech teacher Mr Alister Meek, is a finalist in the R.M. Williams RAS Rural Achiever Award. The award is a state-wide leadership program run by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW to recognise future young leaders (20-29 years of age) working hard to make a significant contribution to their community and rural Australia. The program promotes and facilitates unique agricultural industry networking opportunities with rural leaders and other like-minded individuals through RAS connections and functions during the Sydney Royal Easter Show. “It’s been difficult to watch the effects that lockdowns and uncertainty have had on the local community groups and the events which they normally host. These social gatherings and the sense of community they create are a large part of what makes regional NSW such a great place to live, and this has made me even more determined to get involved and help these organisations to bounce back from the disruptions of the past two years,” says 2022 R.M. Williams RAS Rural Achiever, Alister Meek.
In his current role at Scots All Saints College teaching Agriculture, Primary Industries and Business Studies, Alister is determined to motivate others to help propel the industry forward, uncover innovation, and guide students towards modern farming practices for the benefit of rural areas communities and the Australian agricultural industry.

Two years after her accession to the throne in 1952, now being celebrated as the first-ever Platinum Jubilee of a British monarch, Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Bathurst. A large group of children from all of Bathurst’s schools gathered for the Royal visit at the showground. The Scots Cadets under the command of Lt. John Bulkeley paraded for the occasion. Not long before, the Scots Cadets had been newly fitted out with Blackwatch tartan kilts, which they wore for the occasion. The Cadet Unit was founded in 1951. There was also a reception for the Queen outside the Bathurst Courthouse. The special Royal train overnighted at Newbridge before continuing to Orange the next day.
