Directed by Richard Baird John Steinbeck’s classic drama novella-turned play OF MICE AND MEN hit the boards in 1937, electrifying the audience at the Music Box Theatre. Eighty years later, the story of these two iconic figures, Lenny and George, continues to be part of our country’s collective imagination — a tale of friendship in a world of solitude that is sustained by illusory dreams. This is must-see theatre you cannot afford to miss.

FALL BREEZES IN WITH THE FIRST
SAN DIEGO BREEDERS’ CUP
P
umpkins, spice and everything nice is how we know that Fall is in the air here, since we don’t see much foliage change in
Southern California. But instead of a buzz from that Fall themed latte, San Diegans are buzzing about the Breeders’ Cup coming to Del Mar. It is a major privilege for the city of San Diego to host the Breeders’ Cup for the first time ever! San Diego’s vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and sunny days create a perfect trifecta for The Breeders’ Cup. And as soon as the summer hot spots slowed down, businesses all over San Diego have been prepping to host our Breeders’ Cup guests in true San Diego style. Even the San Diego real estate market has been bustling to wow visitors from far and wide, tempting them with the Southern California dream of living on the golden coast. Fall also signifies a time of gratitude and warmth. With the holidays just around the corner, we all begin to plan our travels and/or prep for our houseguests, and the lovely meals that will be shared. Now is the time when we can take a pause and appreciate all those preparations while still enjoying our fabulous fall weather outside. Join us in remembering all the things we have to be grateful for in this life, as you cuddle up next to the fire or lay out on the beach, with our November issue.

Dia de los Muertos Celebration HISTORIC BALBOA THEATRE, SAN DIEGO, NOVEMBER 2
Celebrate Día de los Muertos with three exciting Chicano and Mexican bands! Grammy-winning Mexican American roots band La Santa Cecilia has become the voice of a new bicultural generation in the United States, fully immersed in modern music but still close to their Latin American influences and Mexican heritage. From Mexico, Mexrrissey pay tribute to Morrissey’s enduring legacy in that country. The Smiths’ frontman has long been a favorite with Mexican audiences, raised on rancheras, mariachis, and singers who were not afraid to cross the line. Now the love has been returned, with Mexrrissey’s south-of-theborder reinventions of Morrissey and The Smiths songs. Latin Grammy nominees Mariachi Flor de Toloache make New York City history as its first and only all-female mariachi group. While working to preserve centuries-old traditions of mariachi, the group’s mélange of the traditional and the modern pushes the boundaries of the genre and brings mariachi music to new audiences. sandiegotheatres.org

It’s the first time Del Mar will showcase the championship; and while it’s no stranger to the thrill of a horse’s allure or its unique racing capabilities, its status is about to be elevated to one worthy of international recognition. Naturally, the CEO of the prestigious Breeders’ Cup, Craig Fravel, is elated. “It’s such a thrill to watch the finest horses and racers. The Breeders’ Cup at its core is about the racing... and Del Mar is a prominent location. For me, it’s a great opportunity to introduce the venue to the world.” Surely if anyone knows the greatness and charm of the Del Mar racetrack, it’s Fravel. He was the track’s Executive Vice President for 20 years before being made General Manager and President in 2010. Not long after, he joined the Breeders’ Cup as CEO where he makes

excellence and the glamor of the event’s star-studded parties. A horse depicts majesty. A creature born with the finest of equine attributes, the horse has aided humanity through history with grace, grandeur and the necessity of travel. Today, we find we’re still just as attached to their appeal whether they’re racing in championships or allowing a child to gaze into their deep eyes. So, when breeders’ from central Kentucky created the Breeders’ Cup in 1984, the bet that it would be as captivating as the animal itself won. Since then, the championship quickly sprinted off into what is now considered the most important part of the racing calendar.
“It’s really the quality of the horses and the incredible international variety of them,” Fravel muses. Indeed, horses from all over the world, including France, Peru and Ireland (just to name a few) make their debut at the starting line. There are 13 races during the two-day affair where as Fravel explains “each and every horse represents the best of their quality.” This is the gold lining of horse racing; the creme de la creme of what’s often hailed as the equine venue of the year. Or, as Fravel sums it up, “The Breeders’ Cup is the Superbowl and Olympics of horse racing.” But, Fravel acknowledges that the relationship between horse and human is far more important than only racing is concerned. Many people find great comradeship with a multitude of animals; but when it comes to horses, we often find a preeminent connection. In fact, when it comes to the history of people and their favored horse, there’s often an almost magical tale. From Greek mythology and folklore to the celebration of horse and cowboy, we find the beast connects to humans on a level that for many is instinctual. “People have an affinity with horses. The history of people and horses goes back so far, there’s a visceral connection,” Fravel says. So visceral a connection in fact, that today many of the Breeders’ Cup horses are
showered with gifts from their human friends. Horses such as Best Pal and Zenyatta (to name a few) receive fan mail, flowers and cards. And of course, if permitted, admirers who come by to visit them. Last year’s Breeders’ Cup winner, Arrogate, is another spellbinding horse with numerous fans. Arrogate’s athleticism and heart sets him apart from other competitors. As manager of Juddmonte Farms, Garrett
O’Rourke explains, “Arrogate is a spectacular looking horse. He’s steel gray with a tremendous aura and energy. He’s one of those horses that when you look at him, he looks like a war horse. He’s an iconic equine star.” Indeed, Arrogate’s championship win last year at Santa Anita Park proves as much—he carries his title with pride. “He’s quite an energetic horse, but he’s big and he’s an eyeful. He looks important and he
carries himself as if he’s important. I think he knows he’s the best horse in the world.” For a worldwide top-ranking horse, Arrogate is appropriately proud of his accomplishments. As is his dedicated jockey, Mike Smith. Together, they make an intense team. One which many fans can’t wait to watch race again. This year’s Breeders’ Cup already has Del Mar fired up for a memorable two-day extravaganza. Spectators can’t wait to watch the finest thoroughbreds stampede to the finish line where the turf meets the surf at old Del Mar. Vacationer’s Guide to Maui Advice for Couples and Families Traveling to Hawaii
I
magine sandy beaches draped with towels and palm fronds. Listen to the crash of the Pacific and feel the warm lick of waves tickle your toes. This may sound like our native San Diego, but it’s far from it. This is Maui. As the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands, Maui is part bustling hub, part tranquil getaway. A jaunt across the Pacific from our airport will get you to the island’s white sandy beaches, where greetings of “Aloha” ring in your ears from the moment you touch the ground. Whether you’ve brought along the kids or just your sweetheart, Maui holds a vacation of unparalleled splendor. MAUI FOR FAMILIES Looking for a destination that can accommodate all ages? Maui might be the place for you. Friendly locals are happy to point you in the direction of the best beaches, hikes and restaurants for the whole crew. WHERE TO STAY The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, located along Kā‘anapali Beach on Maui’s west side, offers 40 lush, manicured acres of easy luxury. There’s plenty to keep the gang busy at this resort, including scuba diving, hula demonstrations, lei-making classes, garden tours and even penguin feedings! (The hotel is home to a colony of African black-footed penguins.) Spend the days relaxing poolside by the Keiki Lagoon (or children’s pool, for little ones), then get ready for a night of cultural surprise with the “Drums of the Pacific Polynesian Spectacular,” an exciting dinner show complete with a traditional imu (underground oven) ceremony and the fantastical flavors of Hawaiian cuisine.

If you parents need a night or day away, drop the kids off at Camp Hyatt, where they’ll do a variety of cultural activities. If it’s dinner time, dip into Japengo, the award-winning restaurant that features fresh, locally sourced Pacific Rim cuisine. The menu includes some of the best sushi on Maui—like the Blackened Ahi Roll with crab, avocado and cucumber topped
with blackened ahi, spicy mayo and Maui onion—as well as fresh flavors like the Sashiwo-style hamachi and watermelon, a refreshing meld of fruity and delicately fishy flavors. WHAT TO DO Need a break from all that sun and sand? Kids of all ages will love the Maui Ocean Center, which bills itself as the Aquarium of Hawaii. There’s a whole trove of exotic and breathtaking wildlife just below the surface of Hawaii’s waters. Explore the island’s Upcountry, which includes Haleakalā National Park. The park garners more than a million visitors every year. Buckle up and drive the park’s winding roads to the famous Haleakalā Crater. When those inevitable cries of “I’m hungry!” start drifting up from the back seat, satisfy their sweet tooth with one of Maui’s favorite treats: shave ice. Maui Nō Ka ‘Oi Magazine voted Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice as its top pick, and they’ve got multiple locations to keep you satiated throughout your travels. MAUI FOR COUPLES If you’re planning a romantic getaway for two, Maui also has your answers. Stroll the beach hand-in-hand, sip fruity cocktails and get lost (or found) on some of the island’s oldest trails during your couple’s retreat.

WHERE TO STAY “Couples Only” sounds like music to our ears, and that’s exactly what you’ll get at Hotel Wailea, Maui’s five-star, zen-inspired, garden-like resort. With just 72 suites—all recently meticulously renovated with rain showers, full kitchenettes and top-notch amenities—Hotel Wailea epitomizes the word “exclusive.” It’s perched 300 feet above sea level, meaning every suite’s balcony offers expansive, 180-degree views of the Pacific. Here, you won’t find a pool packed with screaming kiddos, but a relaxing oasis ready to ease you into luxury, especially if you spend the day at one of the private, residential-style cabanas. The bar serves up your fruity favorites with fresh, local ingredients—just as they should be. The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea serves a true taste of Maui with locally inspired menus populated by fresh, pure ingredients. The islands’ own farms and fishermen serve as the source and inspiration for these delectable dishes, like lobster from the Big Island, Hawaii. Begin with the Kampachi Crudo, a simultaneously light and sumptuously oiled hors d’oeuvres with avocado puree, radish, green papaya and nuoc cham, paired with the restaurant’s signature martini, the lemony Lilikoi (Hawaiian for “passionfruit). WHAT TO DO What better way to relax than with a cold beer? Maui Brewing Co. is a cultural landmark in the brew community—you won’t have any trouble finding their suds across San Diego—but it’s a different experience entirely to taste it on-island. Take a tour, and the two of you will learn exactly what goes into these brews, the history of the company and plans for the future (hint: they’re big). Board games abound in the tasting room if you want to stay awhile. Maui is known for stunning waterfalls and lush landscapes, especially along the winding road to Hāna, but finding the best hiking trails can be tricky. Who better to show you the way than a local? Local Maui Tours, owned and operated by Maui native Kellen Ferguson, offers tours of Maui that cater to the tourist’s style. Ferguson takes you to secret spots and helps you climb to new heights—both literally and figuratively—to make the most of your Maui adventure. But it’s not all adventure. Ferguson knows where to refuel authentically, so whether that’s at an impromptu BBQ stand or a homemade banana bread retailer, you won’t leave hungry. No matter if you’re traveling with your family or your honey, Maui is a special paradise perfect for any time of year.

Horsing Around In San Diego San Diego’s best horse trails & equine events exposed! Saddle-up! By Michael Citrin
D
el Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Olivenhain, Escondido and San Marcos all share a part in the many facets of the exciting horse business. San Diego County is home to trail riding, ring riding, racing and the show circuit… get your highlighter out, we’re taking a ride through them all.
We’ll begin with one popular equine event called dressage; it’s also known as the “dancing” element of equitation where horses and riders must pass tests with panels of qualified judges. In fact, San Diego is home to most of America’s Olympic riders. Even the University of California has a riding division within its campus on the outskirts of Ran-
38
cho Santa Fe. There is barrel racing, which is on some level the “gymnastic quadrant” of equitation with time and accuracy of hoof placement to manipulate tight turns around barrels. There is also Team Penning where riders must select numbered cows from a herd in a team effort and corral the individual number selected while competing with other teams for times and points. Both remind us of the wide diversity of events in which horses excell. And then, of course, there is the horse racing circuit for which Del Mar is so widely known and popular. Naturally, all the elite in equine racing follow the Breeders’ Cup—San Diegans are both proud and lucky to host this race at the Del Mar track for the first time. For those who would rather saddle-up themselves find San Diego County offers a wide variety of stellar trails. One is the Coast to Crest trail system which starts in the perimeter of south Del Mar and works its way east through to the community of Crest some 60 miles. And while there are some interrupted portions, dedicated volunteers will ultimately connect the trail. Actually, The Lake Hodges trail system is part of this network and the views are simply phenomenal. For more exceptional views, there are the coveted bark covered view trails through the Covenant of Rancho Santa Fe. The terrain interlaces around 50 miles of trails through canyons, alongside mansions, the golf course and clubhouse. However, these trails are private for the members of the neighborhood’s Homeowner’s Association and their guests. No worries, there are plenty of public trails including the San Elijo Lagoon trail which feels like one is riding onto the set of an idyllic “National Geographic” feature. And to the south there is the beach as you ride along the Pacific Ocean at the Tijuana Estuary this side of the border. This is a true delight.
F IN E SD.CO M | FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZINES
Other notable trails include the Penasquitas Canyon, parts of Carmel Valley and Del Mar Mesa. There’s also Solana Beach which has upper and lower San Dieguito Park. Plus, Olivenhain has a well-developed system accessed off Lone Jack Road heading up through Spook’s Canyon and beyond along parts of the Escondido Creek. Also impres sive is The Elfin Forest Recreational Preserve. It has terrifc and challenging trails with multiple loops and views of Lake Hodges and the Pacific Ocean. It hosts some of the most commanding and panoramic views in all of San Diego County. Even Dixon Lake has awesome trails. Lastly, do keep in mind that Valley Center also has some fascinating view trails. Please contact your local trail master or myself for more information. Now we’ll switch lassos to discuss the incredible shows available in America’s Finest City. There’s the National Horse Show at the San Diego County Fairgrounds in Del Mar plus many shows are held at Show Park, owned by the State of California. Additionally, we have the popular Polo Fields which are actually owned by the City of San Diego. Plus, there are training facilities all over the county. Opportunity awaits! Looking for a vet for your horse, dog or llama? Well, excellent veterinary representation is in abundance all throughout San Diego County. There are even ‘equestrian service animals’ through the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Want to just trail a horse and buggy?- simply take a ride along Del Dios Highway, but don’t be surprised if you get stuck behind a horse trailer. One needs to be patient! Indeed, it’s a slow grade up to the mesa on the way to Interstate 15. This is your official warning. Whatever your preference, San Diego is home to many horse enthusiasts and a farm of activities. Right now we just can’t wait to see how Del Mar is transformed as we welcome the Breeders’ Cup.

Ballast Point Brewing Co. Born, Bred and Brewed in San Diego By Emily Fawcett

ou already know that San Diego is a hub for great beer and award-winning breweries. You may even know that San Diego is ranked in the top 10 beer cities in the country. (We locals know it’s number one.) But to fully appreciate the brewing love story, you’ve got to start at the beginning, and it all begins with Ballast Point. The idea of Ballast Point was essentially crafted by UCLA college roommates Jack White and Pete A’Hearn in their apartment for one simple reason: the love of beer. And not just the taste. Both White and A’Hearn were brewing their own and were committed to mastering the art, or the craft, of making beer. After college, Jack opened Home Brew Mart, a local store which just celebrated its 25th anniversary and is responsible for launching countless breweries. While at Home Brew Mart, A’Hearn, along with an award-winning brewer named Yuseff Cherney, worked to perfect their craft. They started a back room brewery behind the shop with a 1.5-barrel homebrew

rig. It was there that Sculpin IPA was first brewed and where new flavors and creations emerged. Ultimately what started as a hobby—a serious, passion-filled hobby—turned into a billion dollar brand. From classic brews like the Big Eye IPA to the insanely popular Grapefruit Sculpin IPA, all beers are made with dedication and love. And although not all brews are named after fish, all names are geared toward the ocean and derived from the founders’ love of fishing. In fact, Ballast Point has two dedicated sport fishing teams that travel and compete year-round. The labels on Ballast Point bottles and cans have fish on them as a reminder to always do what you love. Ballast Point, the brand and brewer, has grown exponentially, but there is still a deep commitment to their original roots, their passion for beer, and their hometown. They will continue doing what they love and innovating at every opportunity. Ballast Point is dedicated to the craft of making beer and their hometown of San Diego.

Happy, Homely, Hygge 5 ways to bring Danish coziness into your home By Hannah Pierangelo
H
ygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish-term that describes a feeling of pleasure derived from simple acts of daily life. From making a cup of coffee to lighting a candle, hygge encompasses the happiness we find in the little things. For the Danes, this act of choosing pleasure in small, daily rituals helps combat winter, which for Denmark involves many months of cold, dark nights. While there’s no direct translation in English, we can closely relate the term to words like
“comfort” and “cozy.” According to The New Yorker, hygge is derived from the Norwegian word hugga, meaning “to comfort” and is related to the English word for “hug.” In a way, snuggling up with a soft blanket, a mug of hot chocolate and an old favorite movie can feel like a hug—and that’s the idea of hygge. This feeling isn’t absent outside of Scandinavia. In America, it probably comes along, say, around Christmastime each year. But here, where being busy is exalted and little things are happily overlooked in favor of big picture items like advancing a career and buying a new home, it seems like the mindset of hygge could never belong. Wrong. Hygge surprisingly found a
42
niche, and a big one at that, across the pond last year and the idea became increasingly popular. Books, articles, and design trends galore sprouted up, especially in the wake of winter. It should be emphasized that hygge is not a thing or a trend; it’s not bought, given or lost—it is a mindset. One must actively choose to find happiness in a pair of warm socks and a fireplace, despite the stress of the day or the winter storm raging outside. However, there are a few ways to encourage that cozy feeling this season by creating comfortable spaces in your home and making tedious tasks enjoyable. Here’s what we recommend to feel happy and hygge in the coming months. Who knows—maybe you’ll actually enjoy winter this year. MAKE A CUP OF TEA (OR COFFEE) Skip the Starbucks line for a day and make something special for yourself. This means no tea bag or instant coffee either. Put on a kettle and properly brew a cup of loose leaf tea or fresh ground coffee. Sometimes it helps to pour your warm drink into a favorite mug or a pretty teacup. COZY UP THE LIVING ROOM Part of hygge is connection with loved ones and friends. Warm up the entertaining spaces in your home with fluffy pillows, knitted blankets, dim lighting and plenty of scented candles. Pour mugs of hot apple cider, hot cocoa, or tea with your friends and get comfy!
F IN E SD.CO M | FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZINES
BUY FLOWERS Flowers or fresh greenery are always a great way to liven up a room. Instead of seeing a trip to the florist as another task to complete, make a special trip of it and have fun. Choose different stems and blooms and try to arrange your own vase at home. COOK (OR BAKE) SOMETHING Having dinner with friends is great for a Friday night, but this winter, try taking the fun to the kitchen instead. Collaborate on a meal for interactive togetherness. Working as a team takes the tediousness out of cooking (plus you get extra help with the dishes!) LIGHT THE FIREPLACE If you have a fireplace in your home, it’s the perfect time to gather ‘round. The warmth and smell of the hearth easily invokes comfort and content, so this tip is a no-brainer. Find a book or magazine (one with actual pages!) and relax for a few hours.

A White Affair in Home Décor
I
t is said that ‘Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication’ and interior designers are embracing that same idea with the ‘All-White’ home design trend. Just as fashion trends are derived from runways, the picturesque images of all-white designs are now entering homes, with the minimalistic aesthetic growing in popularity amongst homeowners. Although the aesthetic has captured the interest of modern

interior designers, the all-white trend is nothing new to home design. As with most trends, the style is cyclical from the mid-90’s, a time period where the feverish 80’s were calming and society sought modernism. During this period, home design transitioned into something toned down and embraced the aesthetics of Greek, Japanese, Scandinavian and Moroccan interiors. While the all-white trend embodied the zeitgeist, the once-popular style has revived into current interior designs thanks to visual inspirations from Instagram and Pinterest. Apart from social media, the trend also stemmed from the 2014 bestselling novel, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Society marveled in Marie Kondo’s feng shui how-to and while the underlying concept of keeping a clean space seems palpable, the idea of decluttering has transcended into home design. The design can be perceived as cost-effective, for less becomes more when decorating. It can also be surmised that embracing a white décor can make the home design process easier. Rather than have the essence of the home rely on costly posses-

sions and decorations, a white blueprint can allow homeowners to highlight the architectural details of their home. Clean, sleek and free of chaos, the white design embodies equanimity a home is expected to convey. At first glance, an all-white design can seem bland and lack the charisma homeowners would yearn for their space to have. But with a closer look, the design can offer sophistication, timelessness and the modern refinement needed to make any home luxurious and glam. From white couches to luminescent lighting, a white focus elevates a space into a classic ambiance that can mirror that of Cinderella’s glass slipper. While popular and visually appealing, the all-white trend can vary if strategically designed. Adding certain elements such as,
rugs, dining essentials, pillows, etc. in different tones can add dimension throughout the space. The use of texture such as furry rugs and silk linen can also elevate the design into something more luxe. While complimenting the space with neutral colors such as teal or mustard rids monotony from existing throughout the space. The white design should be perceived as the home’s whipped cream awaiting the embellishments of a few colorful sprinkles to stand out. A home may be where the heart is, but the white trend is transitioning a home into embodying a new role. Rather than just being a private space, an all-white trend makes a home a blank canvas in which homeowners can have the artistic freedom to convey luxury in simple details.

Feature Fixtures

n San Diego’s modern luxury homes, every detail has the opportunity to be beautiful. Of course, there are the grandiose structures that make a house envy-inducing, like stately columns, ocean-view balconies or swimming pools. But even the seemingly mundane features can become works of art. In many luxury homes, artfully crafted details like designer sink and shower faucets are common and serve to add an extra element of refinery and elegance. Alex Miller, a local San Diego artist and architect, creates those feature fixtures full time and is incredibly passionate about his work. “Most faucets are decorated pipes,” Miller says. “I didn’t want it to feel that way.” Instead, Miller takes his inspiration straight from the ocean. His influence derives from water’s shape and surface, the curve of waves and the pull of tides. As a lifelong San Diegan, Miller grew up near the ocean and says he

has always felt the need to include the look and feel of water in his work. It’s fitting that he now styles faucets, which of course, carry water—the very element that inspires their design. “Faucets made a lot of sense to me because I spend a lot of time in water,” Miller says. “My dreams are inspired by the water and the sky. It just made sense to harness my skill to make faucets.” Though he’s been making them for three years, Miller didn’t always have home fixtures in mind. He says he had been drawing and building things his whole life, and always knew he would become an architect. Miller attended Tulane University for his degree, and began his career working for a large firm after graduating. However, he discovered right away that corporate architecture wasn’t the right path. Instead, Miller found that he was far more interested in organic projects and

inspired by the natural world and its fascinating cycles. “Water has a magical story,” Miller says. “For me, the ocean is the beginning and the end of the cycle, but that’s where it’s really coming from. The surface of the ocean is evaporating into the sky and comes back down as rain.” His work evokes the movement, rhythm, and vibrancy of the water cycle, as well as maintains a luxury look and feel. The faucets are expertly crafted with care, beginning first as a clay prototype, then transformed into three-dimensional computer models, and finally cast in brass and coated in various high-quality finishes, like brushed nickel and 24 karat gold. Each design is made to be a unique and stunning part of the home—not just a decorative detail, but a functional and artistic one as well. “In architecture school, they teach that there should be a
reason for every line that you draw,” Miller says. “If you do that, then we all end up living in boxes. By focusing on justifying every line, we forget to make things beautiful.” Miller is a rare cross between left-brained architect and right-brained artist, but the blend of both worlds is what brings functionality to art, and vice versa. In a way, art and architecture need each other. Though he balances both well, Miller does consider himself more of an artist, preferring the creative process over an intellectual one. He says he is directly inspired by dreams, nature and sculpture. Miller says, “The faucet in your home should be a sculpture as well, marking the celebration of having this precious resource available at your fingertips.” His artful and inspiring pieces do just that, commemorating water’s place in our daily lives, and complementing any modern home with a touch of nature.

San Diego master designer Mitch Brean has been creating artful pieces for homes, hotels, spas, patios and gardens for 30 years, pieces that reflect artistic sensibilities. Drawn to the designs of Greek, Roman, French and Italian countryside motifs, Brean began traveling as a young man, ultimately creating similar planters and stone crafted items with the same timeless look using modern materials. Equal parts inventor, engineer and artist, he developed a malleable mixture of glass fibers and concrete that mimics the look of stone but at a fraction of the weight. Why is this important? dig, Brean’s designs ensure the client can achieve the artistic look they strive for. Remarkably, with the look of stone’s heft, local artisans handcraft each piece to create the look of a rugged pot, table and base, even mantels of bygone eras. What’s more, because of their glass-reinforced concrete materials, they lend themselves to easier placement as they are lighter in weight. But these are facts. While critical to the individual home or commercial buyer, it is the exquisite design that provides an arresting element. From urn planters to French woven baskets, from columns so realistic they evoke days from Greece, Rome and Europe. With Stone Yard’s ability through Brean’s inventiveness and artistic muscle, the company stands apart from the average planter and home furnishing designer and manufacturer.
angular and low, with an eclectic combination of its contemporary shape that reveals long strips where fire extrudes, incorporating the carved geometric contrast of horizontal and perpendicular etchings on its sides. It also comes with a remote ignition system.
THE SHAPE AND TEXTURE BECOMES YOU Not to be typecast in antiquities only, however, Brean teamed up recently with designer Amy Meier to create accent pieces with a modern twist. “I like things that are eclectic; to mix antiquities with the contemporary,” says Brean. Originally inspired by plaster models at a French flea market, Meier felt drawn to enhance uniquely shaped accent pieces with Brean’s unique textures and colors. The result? The Amy Meier Collection. Together the duo synergistically created sculptural shapes with a textural twist. By incorporating surfaces that tease the tactile impulse, Brean added an aged and distressed gesso finish fusing motifs of old and new. Ultimately, Meier’s geometric shapes bring the art gallery into one’s home with the look of both modern and ancient discernment. FIRE AND LIGHT Forever stretching the imagaination, Stone Yard’s Fire tables and bowls light up the night while inspiring ongoing beauty by day. Each fire table and bowl is a display piece in its in right without even being lit. Comprised of five designs, the collection’s signature piece is the Boulder Fire Table, complete with a smooth surface on one end while the other contains an embedded fire bowl for an elegant look. It’s base is rugged, craggy, rock-inspired. In contrast, the Primitive Low Bowl and Zamora Fire Bowl both display a sedate design, almost shy, but are anything but with their uniquely designed sides. The Zamora has a bold grid pattern, at home in a Scandinavian or urban mod-

ern environment, while the Primitive Low Bowl has the look of the rustic and rugged. Both bowls can be customized to size, with fuel options of natural gas or propane, and fire glass or tumbled lava stones to choose from. Rounding out the collection are the Gobi Fire Bowl and the Zaragoza Fire Table. The Gobi has a rough surface just begging to be touched. Suspended on feet, it claims a tribal look and is customizable as to size, color and fuel medium. It comes with a remote control ignition system. The Zaragoza Fire Table is rect-
SYGLOSS FINISH FOR CONTEMPORARY PLANTERS For those with the modern in mind, Brean has created several contemporary designs. Also made with fiber glass reinforcement, the Cuarzo, Bijou urn, the Siro and Dodeca planters are lightweight, angled, hip and sleek with their proprietary Syglos finish. Fully customizable, Brean developed new color schemes this year to reflect the California topographical and marine shades of nature. Warm and inviting, colors include Desert Sand, Palm Leaf, Shoreline Blue and Pacific Blue. In the end, Mitch Brean continually innovates at Stone Yard, providing customizable planters, indoor outdoor tables and chairs, sculptural pieces and accents for the discerning homeowner and upscale commercial property designer. All About the Eye By Amanda Langston-Barnett
I
n the world of design, it’s often said that you either have it or you don’t: the eye. That j’ne sais quo that sets apart the haves and the have nots. A skill set not attainable in book, a lecture hall or even by perusing countless pins on Pinterest. But what if you do have it? What if you love design, devour shelter magazines, and find perusing Pinterest never gets old. What if you’re the type who can spot a good find in a flea market, know how to piece together genres to blend a cohesive style that’s all your own, but somehow find that still your designs fall flat. They never seem quite finished; they lack polish. Certainly, your design eye is begging for the debutante treatment and a home staging course is the cotillion for which your eye has been waiting. The farce of the model home can haunt you. You may walk into a model home and feel as if you’ve found your little slice of heaven on earth. It may seem like the home was built just for you, but when you get home, no amount of rearranging or couch upgrades can get you back to the peace you felt when cruising through a brand new model home. Indeed, ‘Model Home Envy’ is
52
FIN E SD.CO M
real, and it’s something that has been picked up on by realtors tenfold. Home staging has become essential to the sale of a home—brand new or otherwise. But home staging isn’t just confined to the “For Sale” set. What if you could live in your own tiny slice of heaven after all? And what if the know-how was just a weekend away? Brace yourself: Cathy Hobbs of HGTV’s Design Star fame is bringing her love of home staging to the novice. Having served as Oprah’s interior design expert on Oprah’s The Life You Want tour, Hobbs is kicking off a tour of her own. She has partnered with the Certified Stag-
ing Professionals certification program to offer three-day courses in home staging in five U.S. cities this fall. Channeling Oprah’s model of fulfilling your potential, Hobbs sets out to teach anyone with a love of design how to translate a space into a home. Hobbs recently launched her Ten Under Ten method, a full-concept marketing, staging and promotion program to have any home market and sales ready in under 10 days. For a realtor or aspiring designer, Hobbs’ weekend course is a no-brainer. But for those of us who have a penchant for design and the ever elusive shelter-mag-ready home of our dreams quietly out of reach, Hobbs can help us reach our fullest potential as well. Cathy Hobbs makes the last stop of her U.S. tour in San Diego December 8-10, 2017. www.stagingtraining.com or contact 1-888-STAGING.

Birchbox Q&A By Hannah Pierangelo
Ashley McKenna TITLE Senior PR Associate NAME
How did Birchbox get started? Our co-founders Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna were in business school when they noticed that beauty —which is an enormous global industry—was under-penetrated online. They saw a huge opportunity to build a company that could sell beauty online, effectively. Now Birchbox has more than 1 million subscribers and 4 million total customers. On a personal level, they wondered why was it so hard to have a great beauty buying experience if one isn’t as passionate about beauty as the next person. If one doesn’t obsess over beauty and doesn’t enjoy researching the latest launches, they still deserve to get the best products. They still want to look beautiful and still want to spend money on things they love and things that work. Our co-founders thought, how could we give people the
confidence to purchase online? So they created a business model around the concept of taking something you have historically received for free—samples— and making them more relevant and enjoyable while asking you to pay for them. They believed that relevance and personalization were valuable to the consumer—and the consumer agreed. How did Birchbox decide to target women who weren’t necessarily beauty obsessed? How do those women benefit from Birchbox? Birchbox’s customer is a bit unexpected—we don’t target beauty junkies, but rather women who are NOT passionate about beauty. They want to look their best, of course, but they find shopping for beauty to be a chore and don’t have the time nor the interest to research all the options out there. So our goal is to make it easy and efficient to find new products they love. We’re more than just a subscription. Our goal is to help customers discover
new products they love (via the monthly boxes), and then make it easy to buy fullsize versions of their favorites online—so we have a full e-commerce shop on Birchbox.com with more than 800 bestin-class beauty and grooming brands. What sorts of products are included in Birchbox? Customers receive five beauty products a month that can include hair, skincare, body, makeup, and fragrance. We work with over 800 prestige brands, from mainstream favorites (like MAC, Kiehl’s and Benefit Cosmetics) to niche up-and-comers (like Sunday Riley and OUAI). Everything is personalized to our individual customers’ beauty profiles. Do you ever include items like beauty tools, nail care, and bath items? Or is it strictly hair, skin, and makeup? Our regular monthly boxes can include samples from hair, skincare, body (i.e. location, scrubs), makeup, and fragrance. We also carry standalone limited-edition boxes and kits you can buy online for a great value that may include lifestyle items such as a hair styler, apparel, etc. The products go along with that box/kit’s theme. Our
e-commerce shop sells tools like curling irons, blowdryers, etc. and lifestyle items like water bottles, etc. What’s the process behind choosing the products in each month’s box? Does everyone get the same box? A core part of what we do is personalize the boxes to each subscriber’s individual needs. When you subscribe you fill out a beauty profile noting your hair type, skin type, skin concerns, etc. Our fancy algorithms make sure the samples are as relevant/useful to each customer as possible. After receiving a box of samples, subscribers can go to the web store and purchase full-size beauty products of their favorites. Can a subscriber request a specific sample in their next box? Our “sample choice” feature lets subscribers choose one of their samples for their next monthly box. We’re also
testing a concept called Birchbox Select that gives customers more control over their discovery experience. If you know you want something specific, now you can get to that product faster. We were taken aback by how interested people were in having more control in their selection experience so we’re continuing to iterate on this idea. Birchbox also caters to men with Birchbox Man. What inspired the company to appeal to men as well? Birchbox just celebrated five years of its men’s subscription box. After the initial success of our women’s subscriptions, we tested a limited-edition box of men’s grooming and lifestyle products during the 2011 holiday season and it sold out in just three days. Even more surprising, the customers were mostly men buying for themselves. It was clear to us that men were looking for a new, easy way to learn about and purchase high-quality grooming products. We just launched a $10 monthly box that features five personalized grooming samples across hair, skincare, shave/ beard, body, and fragrance. They might also receive shampoo, facial moisturizers, deodorant, or beard oil. We also have our $20 BirchboxMan Plus monthly box that includes five grooming samples and one lifestyle item (i.e. wallet, pocket square, tech gadget, etc.). The holidays have some cool limited-edition boxes coming up. Are these strictly a holiday thing?
How often do limited edition boxes occur? What makes these boxes special? We have about 10-12 limited-edition boxes throughout the year, but our holiday limited edition boxes are little different this year. We are selling two holiday limited-edition boxes leading up to holiday called “Toast to the Host” and “Time To Dazzle” that will include full-size items, lifestyle accessories, and more products overall. We’re also excited to be launching for the first time ever, our “Countdown to Beauty” Advent Calendar. Tell me about the advent calendar box. What does that entail? For the first time ever, we are selling an Advent calendar that will include samples of our bestselling beauty products from many prestige brands, giving consumers the chance to find the joy of discovering a new product behind each door. Instead of the typical 12 days of surprises, our special Birchbox touch includes 14 products. We certainly expect this limited-edition box to sell out fast. Anything else you’d like to share? We also have the Birchbox Loyalty Program, which is the most generous rewards program in the beauty space. For every $1 you spend, you earn one point to spend in the Birchbox Shop. If you spend $300 in the year, you reach a higher tier of becoming a Birchbox Ace, which unlocks special perks and privileges.

Pink Peonies An Interview with Rachel Parcell multi-million-dollar company. The content focuses primarily on fashion, with other fun subjects thrown in such as home décor, beauty, and family life. In May of last year, inspired by the success of the fashion side of her blog and a lifelong dream, Rachel successfully started her own clothing line, the Rachel Parcell collection. Her line features clothes that are timeless, feminine, versatile, unique, and tailored to her blog’s audience. By tailoring her clothes to the followers of her blog, Rachel has created her own platform for selling her clothes. In September, her adorable fall collection hit her site and she will soon be releasing her holiday collection as well. Something her fans (myself included) are all looking forward to. I had the immense pleasure of getting in touch with the lovely Rachel and having some of my questions answered. We sat down to find out how this talented blogger, fashion expert, fashion designer, and mother of two (Isla, 2 and Jackson, 1) does it all while being the very definition of fabulous:

Initially, the blog was meant to keep in touch with her family and friends during her first year of marriage to her husband Drew, but before she knew it she was drawing more attention to her site. Soon after, popular fashion icons were reaching out to her and eventually began paying her for endorsing their products. Today, her blog Pink Peonies is a
I’d like to start by saying that I love your blog, follow your Instagram, and your adorable fashion line. Would you start by explaining to our readers how you took a blog, initially meant for your family and friends, and transformed it into a diverse blog with a focus on fashion?

Will you tell our readers where the name “Pink Peonies” came from? Pink has always been my favorite color and peonies are one of my favorite flowers. So, I put the two together to create “Pink Peonies” and it stuck! For young girls inspired by your blog and wanting to blog themselves, what would be your one piece of advice? It may sound cliché, but “be yourself.” In this competitive world, we live in, it’s important to try not to compare ourselves and to just be content with ourselves and the life we have. What made you decide to take your fashion blog to the next level by starting your own clothing line? I always knew I wanted a clothing line of my own—it has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. When I launched my blog I never would have dreamed it would have grown so fast and so large, but when it did I knew it would be the perfect platform to help launch my childhood dream of having a clothing line, now I had built-in customers.

journal for my family and friends to follow. Not long after I started my blog, our wedding was featured on the cover of Utah Valley Brides Magazine and that’s when I started seeing more and more traffic on my little space of the internet. My wedding photos were being pinned (and repinned) and I started receiving fashion questions from women all over the country. They were more interested in what top I was wearing or what shade of lipstick I had on than what my husband and I were doing that weekend. That’s really what sparked the idea to change my focus and make Pink Peonies more of a fashion blog.

I’ve worked out a schedule where I keep all my work projects, meetings, and photo shoots on the same days every week so that when I’m home I can actually be home and focus on being with my children, rather than trying to multitask. I make time to work so I can focus and get it done. I start every morning with a workout (or a run) with my neighborhood girlfriends then come home, get my babies up, and make breakfast. Then I get ready for either a photo shoot for the blog or a shoot for my clothing line. Afterward, I have meetings (and more meetings), brand conference calls, scheduling calls, and planning upcoming projects and collaborations with my team. Do you have any tips for other parents trying to balance personal life with multiple work projects? What are some of your personal tips for time management? Balancing work life and personal life can be a struggle. I don’t have a typical 9-5 job and so much of it, especially when it comes to blogging, is my everyday life. I’m constantly brainstorming and creating new content for my audience. It’s something I love and am truly passionate about so getting out of “work-mode” is difficult sometimes, but try to remember what’s most important and take breaks and time for yourself. You’ll be happier and more effective! What are your plans for your clothing line in the future? We recently launched all our fall styles for Rachel Parcell Inc. and are looking forward to releasing our holiday collection as well! Right now, my amazing team and I are working hard to roll out our designs for next summer and fall. It’s crazy how far ahead you have to plan when creating and founding a clothing line. But we are excited for what the future holds!

Small Batch Bounty Landmark Vineyards Exceeds Expectations with Flavor-Filled Wines
A
lush and pristine quality envelops Landmark Vineyards’ Sonoma Valley headquarters, nestled in the beautiful Mayacamas Mountains foothill region. Once there, it’s easy to amble between the vines or sit by the gurgling fountain in the courtyard before stepping inside to indulge one’s wine proclivities in the tasting room. Initially renowned for their light Chardonnay, Landmark has also developed a smashing reputation for their bold Pinot Noir. The secret to their success includes a time-honored process that relies on richly grown and harvested fruit as the primary flavor ingredient. Combined with impeccable viticultural practices and winemaking techniques, their 90-plus ratings consistently demonstrate
64
palate-pleasing vintages, making them one of the premier small batch wineries in the country.
F IN E SD.CO M | FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZINES
Landmark was founded in 1974 by an adventurous group of individuals—a group that included Damaris Deere Ford. No stranger to the soil, Damaris was the great-great-granddaughter of John Deere, the inventor of the first steel plow. Growing up in not just an agricultural family but also one with business savvy, Damaris became the sole owner by 1989. Interim owners further developed the business, expanding both capability and notoriety for full-bodied wines. By 2011, however, Stewart and Lynda Resnick of The Wonderful Company had acquired Landmark, quickly taking it to a whole new level. One way the duo has put Landmark “on the map” is by showcasing their flagship wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with casual yet swanky events and Wine Society accessibility.

WHAT’S IN A CHARDONNAY Chardonnay is Landmark’s first love with the 2014 Overlook providing a gentle seduction for all white wine lovers who imbibe. A deep appreciation for the Overlook offers a delicious tease before sliding down one’s throat. Delicate but far from shy, the 2014 whole cluster press batches are allowed to settle for a day. Then, the 100% Chardonnay varietal spontaneously ferments in French oak barrels, aging for 10 months after. With a keen eye, vintner Greg Stach ensures the hand-harvested and hand-sorted fruit is premium batched, “representing the best of the vintage.” Released in 2016, this Chardonnay’s tasting notes render Meyer lemon tart, marzipan, almonds, pear, honeysuckle with a delicate vanilla hint on the nose. And the palate? Apricot, clover honey and toast tantalize the tongue in perfect pitch with a “zippy acidity and bright minerality.” Exceedingly popular, the winery ships chardonnay to all 50 states in the U.S, at both the wholesale and Club levels. PINOT NOIR WITH PANACHE For the red wine lover, Landmark’s 2014 Overlook Pinot Noir does not disappoint. Relentlessly perfecting his craft, Stach flexed his muscle to create a spir-
ited and robust Pinot. It’s stand-up-andtake-notice-flavor showcases the elegant fragrance of molasses, cherry, spearmint, black tea, cranberry and plum on the nose. It is then followed with a slowly savored sluicing of gingerbread spice, red raspberry and grilled mushroom, before a lingering finish of mocha, black tea and the “earthy forest floor.” Also aged for 10 months, the mixture has undergone daily “hand punch downs” to perfect this single vineyard lot final blend. The fruit has been hand harvested, sorted and fermented using 100% native yeasts, with the appellation chosen from the finest grapes in Sonoma, Monterey and San Benito counties. The 2014 Overlook Pinot is shipped to major metropolitan areas in the U.S. as well as to Club members. Between a total of seven Pinots, with 2014 Overlook at the forefront, and nationwide distribution of the Overlook Chardonnay, Landmark ships 64,000 cases of wine annually, an impressive number indeed for a small press outfit. From hosting local events to events held in select cities nationwide, Landmark’s presence is easily accessible throughout the year at many locations. Hospitality Manager Donna Carroll oversees staff and functions, showcasing a casual yet elegant display of food and wine. “Weddings are my favorite,”
she quips. Featured events in October include the auspicious Harvest Festival in Kenwood, California. Combined with the best the Sonoma Valley has to offer, restaurateurs will put on an astonishing locally sourced spread of delicacies and cheeses on October 7th, expertly complementing each wine offering. Besides weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays, private specialty events and festivities can be arranged in the vineyard’s tranquil courtyard or in additional facilities on property. Several Estate Tour and Tasting packages (including one in a horse-drawn carriage) are also available to learn of Landmark’s viticul-

tural practices, with delightful tastings along the way. Wine aficionados can enjoy Overlook vintages in the comfort of their own homes throughout the year by becoming club members. Shipments of either Chardonnay, Pinot Noirs, or both, are available at several levels. Shipped in the spring and fall, members choose from 6 or 12 bottles each season, with additional upgrades at 3, 6, and 12 bottle increments. Invitations to exclusive events are also part of the Club package, with priority access to these incomparably handcrafted small production wines. With exquisitely crafted wine

Matchmaking, Equestrian Club & Foundation—The Perfect Trifecta By Emily Fawcett HELLO, LOVE Love was in the air during a recent afternoon with Irene Valenti at the Valenti Estate in Rancho Santa Fe, headquarters for the Valenti Equestrian Club. A gentle wind blew through the tall eucalyptus trees as a groom brought hay for handsome new resident, Zealous Tale. “He is still figuring things out and getting settled,” said Ms. Valenti, Valenti International Founder and President. “We are so glad Zealous Tale is here with us – he is quite a character. He has a big personality and everybody loves him,” she said, feeding him a handful of treats while impeccably dressed from head to toe in cream. Horses have always been close to Ms. Valenti’s heart, both at home in her Equestrian Club and through her charitable foundation. Zealous Tale, a thoroughbred and former racehorse, suffered a broken sesamoid during a routine warm-up. Once recovered, he returned to training, but unfortunately came up sore. His owners decided to retire him, ending his promising racing career. With the help of current owner, Del Mar resident Bing Bush Jr., Zealous Tale’s story has a happy ending. Zealous Tale is now in his second career as a successful hunter jumper. And he has a lovely life here at the Valenti Equestrian Club. WELCOMING BREEDERS’ CUP Ms. Valenti looks forward to welcoming Breeders’ Cup to San Diego for the first time in history. It is the equestrian community’s most prestigious event. As part of their mission

to help horses and raise awareness for retired thoroughbreds, Valenti International is sponsoring “Bash at the Beach” which will benefit The Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA). TCA works to provide a better life for thoroughbreds through retraining, rehoming and research. TCA also provides assistance to backstretch and farm workers that care for thoroughbreds. Following the first full day of championship racing on November 3, fans will join owners, jockeys, contenders, trainers, and international media to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy stunning sunsets in Del Mar—all for a cause near and dear to Ms. Valenti’s heart. The Bash will bring together locals and visitors from around the world and will feature Valenti’s love ambassadors and elegant signature touches. “We are thrilled to be part of Breeders’ Cup excitement, and we look forward to providing fans with an unforgettable first-class experience,” says Valenti. “We are honored to support TCA as Breeders’ Cup comes to San Diego. The more horses we can help, the better.” HATS & HORSES Valenti International Matchmaking was the first-ever title sponsor of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s Opening Day. THE VALENTI FOUNDATION “There have been many times in my life when I have wanted to help so deeply that I stopped at nothing,” continues Ms. Valenti. “It was important for me to recognize my love of giving back, and the Valenti Foundation has really become an integral part of our company today.” The Valenti Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) charity, was established to transform the lives of those most vulnerable in our

27 HORSES One of the largest charitable undertakings for Ms. Valenti was her personal involvement in the rescuing of 27 neglected and malnourished American Arabian horses. Ms. Valenti received a call from a woman north of Santa Barbara who was in desperate need to find a home—not homes, plural, but a singular home for her 27 horses. Not daunted by the task, Ms. Valenti quickly recruited individuals willing to help. Volunteers escorted the horses off donated trailers to their new home. A truckload of hay arrived and veterinarians, dentists, and farriers all showed up to assist. They never asked for a single dime for their services. “We never thought to take photos of everything that was happening. It was unbelievable. The trailers kept arriving, and the horses were coming out starving and very frightened. It was a team effort for certain,” shares Ms. Valenti. And although she credits the close-knit horse community with stepping up and helping when needed, it was Irene Valenti who assembled that army, by simply picking up the phone. Her passion for helping is unrelenting and powerful. Having grown up on a small farm, Ms. Valenti is happiest surrounded by animals. In addition to the horses, local squirrels, ducks and birds all come out to greet visitors at the Valenti Estate, which also serves as home to Valenti Matchmaking. THE ART OF MATCHMAKING The concept of matchmaking brings with it a certain mystique – and many people are curious about how the process works. The Valenti Experience does not involve computer surveys or texting. It is deliberately low-tech and traditional. There are no emojis and you don’t swipe right. “This is not a dating service,” says
Ms. Valenti. “It’s a serious business.” The professional Valenti matchmaking team, including on-staff psychologists, meets and gets to know each client personally. Each client’s preferences, personal tastes, traditions, core values, and character— as well as romantic compatibility—are synthesized into Valenti’s unique matchmaking formula. The Valenti Experience is designed for those with busy, successful lives who are now ready to invest in their personal success. The process begins with a getting-toknow-each-other session. During this time, clients not only gain insight into themselves, but also decide whether Valenti International is the right fit for their needs. Contracts are custom tailored to the client’s individual goals and expectations. Valenti does not offer cookie-cutter services or pricing. The process is exceptionally personal – with an unbreakable commitment to every client’s privacy. A professional administrative staff, including an in-house concierge, is on hand to help clients throughout the matchmaking process. Details are planned and organized by the Valenti staff. Even details on selecting the perfect table at the perfect restaurant and sending just the right flowers are not overlooked. A client’s request is never more than a phone call away, and someone on staff is always available. Many clients have unfettered access to Ms. Valenti herself - including phone calls on Sundays. Almost 100% of Valenti’s business is through referrals from clients. “Clients become like family to us, and we are with them every step of the way. It is our deep understanding of each client’s unique story that has resulted in countless lifelong partnerships,” says Valenti. The company attracts a clientele of exceptional individuals – they are attractive, successful in their own right and hail from all 50 states and around the globe. With 27 years of successful matchmaking under their belts, the Valenti team believes that the more you have to offer, the harder it is to find that special relationship. Ms. Valenti adds, “Our services are unique and may not be the right fit for everyone, but very often we are referred to friends of cli-

There is, indeed, love in the air. And whether it is bringing joy to a lonely heart, helping horses have a second chance, or providing for those in need, the goal for Ms. Valenti and her
team has always been to make a positive difference in the lives of others. And that passion to do good puts Valenti International in the winner’s circle.

Taking the Reins from Gary Stevens to be a Jockey for a Day By Corey Levitan
Standing 5-foot-6
with a voice that sounds like I inhaled helium, I always felt a pull toward horse racing. It’s the world’s only sport I may actually be too tall to qualify for. “Your belly’s in the way!” Gary Stevens screams in the jockey exercise room at Del Mar Racetrack, where my training begins at 6:30 a.m. on the Equicizer, the mechanical horse on which Tobey

Maguire trained to be a pretend jockey for the 2003 movie Seabiscuit. To celebrate San Diego’s first turn hosting the Breeders’ Cup on November 3rd and 4th, I decided to find out what makes jockeys tick as one of them for a day. And I have none other than legendary Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who won 11 Breeders’ Cups, train me.
“You’re supposed to lean forward toward the neck with your ass off the saddle,” Stevens continues, laughing as he gives up before even turning the machine on, “but your belly’s in the way! “Are you kidding me?” Stevens retired in 2005, after reaching 5,000 race victories. Then he spent several years in Hollywood, where his credits included parts in Seabiscuit and the 2011 HBO miniseries Luck. Seven years later, he slipped back into the irons. “I was bored,” he says. “I liked acting, but it was getting a little bit monotonous. I had the itch to come back, and my body felt good.” At age 50, Stevens became the oldest jockey to win a Breeders’ Cup on a horse called Mucho Macho Man at Santa Anita. It’s a record he hopes to break again next month in Del Mar at age 54. By the way, I’m wrong about height qualifying someone to be a jockey. It’s purely weight. Yes, Stevens is 5-foot-4. But most jockeys are short only because more height tends to confer more weight. Eating is more of a preoccupation to jockeys than it is to supermodels. Stevens weighed in at 120 lbs. this morning but is listed in the program as 116 lbs. “I thought I was lighter than that,” he says. “My whole day just changed in three seconds.” Because horse racing is a game of inches, 2-3 lbs. can often distinguish winning from losing. So Stevens must now try to lose as much weight as possible before his two races this afternoon. (Between the Equicizer, galloping his horses and the steam room, that’ll be an amazing 2 lbs. He’ll ride both Little Bit Lovely

and Dynamic Mizzes K to fourth place—but not before being fat-shamed. An announcement will state that the horses are carrying two more pounds than listed.) “Weight is a constant awareness,” Stevens says. “When I’m on vacation, I won’t even step on a scale because it makes me anxious.” Horse racing is a family business to Stevens, who entered when he was 14 years old in Idaho. His dad, Ron, was a horse trainer and his mom, Barbara, a rodeo queen. His older brother Scott, 57, still races. “What motivates me now is the same thing that motivated me then—winning,” Stevens says. “I’m not thinking about anything else. And that’s the kind of person you need to be to make it in this business.” According to Stevens, only 5 percent of licensed U.S. jockeys earn more than $50,000 a year. Even those lucky enough to have won multiple multi-million-dollar purses, like Stevens, have costs that most fans don’t think about. “Depending on what state you’re in, 60 percent goes to the owner, and you get 10 percent of that,” Stevens says. “Out of your 10 percent, you pay your agent 25 percent and your valet 2.5 percent, and stake the workers in the barn, the exercise rider and the assistant trainer. So you’ve got to be in it for more than money.” It’s not possible to overstate the danger of riding horses for a living, either. Between 1940 and 2012, 152 jockeys died on the job. Stevens, nicknamed “Bionic Man” because of all his replacement body parts, was nearly one of them. Several times.
When asked to describe his worst injury, Stevens instead shows me on his smartphone – someone uploaded it to YouTube. Titled “2003 Arlington Million (fall),” the clip shows Stevens tumbling off a spooked stallion named Storming Home and getting kicked in the head and back numerous gruesome times. “That’s from the nerves from my broken neck,” he says, explaining why his fingers wiggle randomly as he lay motionless on the track. Stevens then turns to me with a stare that burns into the back of my eyeballs and asks: “So, you think you’ve got what it takes?” Stevens walks me to the stable where the horse I will learn to ride, named Tiger, awaits my freshly acquired jockeying skills. Many of Stevens’ jockey friends try hiding their laughter as they spot me waddling by in my Abbondanza Racing silks, before realizing I’m in on the joke. “He’s looking for an agent, if anyone’s interested!” Stevens announces. “Hey, it’s the next Chuck Lopez!” someone yells back. Tiger’s trainer, Manny, waves us over to the stable. It’s time for my moment in the saddle. I’d like to say I thundered Tiger down the dirt before the track opened to the public. I’d like to say it felt like fate to fit my feet in the stirrups, grasp the coarse reins in my hands and assume the jockey stance in a moment that forever changed my life.
But I can’t say any of that. Tiger is a 10-year old lead pony who no longer races. (Lead ponies walk the procession of racehorses to the starting gate for each race.) The only dirt we ride on is beside his stables on the track’s backside. And Tiger is being walked around by a very nervous Manny, not thundering in my hands. That’s all the jockeying Tiger’s owner would allow me to experience, citing such trivialities as “liability,” “regulations” and “sanity.” “Have you even ridden a horse before?” Stevens asks. Actually, back at Camp Merrick Woods in Long Island, they had a stallion that walked in circles around a corral and let you feed him carrots. I’m pretty sure his name was Mr. Ted. And, let me tell you, I handled Mr. Ted better than any other camper could. “My apologies,” Stevens says sarcastically. “You totally got this.” Eventually, my whining breaks Manny down. Against his better judgement, he relinquishes control and Tiger is all mine. He’s only walking, but I drop into jockey stance anyway—at least until Manny asks me to please sit up straight. Then I give Tiger the gentlest of kicks and he lurches forward. For three seconds until he slows back down, I see my dead grandmother at the end of a long tunnel of light. And that three seconds, Stevens tells me, is precisely what being a jockey feels like. What’s the difference between Gary Stevens’ jockey career and mine? I’m retired for good. Watch Stevens ride in the very first Del Mar Breeders’ Cup on November 3rd and 4th.

The New Female Oasis New Female Spaces Designed to Emulate Popular Man Caves By Lexy Perez
J
ulia Roberts may have traveled the world to ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and acquire the zen she needed in her life, but the time has come where the oasis a woman yearns for resides right in her backyard. Men have their caves and now women have their sheds. An alternate form of the male counterpart, ‘She Sheds’ are rooms or spaces designed specifically to be a woman’s fantasy world. Blueprinted as miniature living rooms, women are able to do as they wish in their own open space, without interruption. The idea resembles an adult playhouse, only rather than being a clubhouse, the space is considered a mini-getaway with a ‘no boys allowed’ sign hanging outside. While they can vary, the purpose of a she shed is entirely up to the woman. From reading to napping to an extra work office space, women use the shed as a free space to do what they wish. Although sheds can be constructed in the backyard, most she sheds are created from extra garage space or outdoor sheds preexisting on the property. The concept of a she shed mostly relies on the decorations. The designs may vary according to a woman’s preference and taste, but the interiors follow the same pattern. Popular necessities for a she shed include: sofas, pillows, bookshelves, office desks, florals, photographs and bohemian lights.
It is also common to coat the floors with layered rugs and fill open spaces with vintage antiques. The most crucial aspect of a she shed is that it’s a space where a fantasy world can become a reality. The female space can emulate a cottage in the woods, beach house, garden greenhouse, library, craft room, art studio, coffee shop, etc. She sheds are commonly painted bright colors in order to be distinguished from the property. Common colors include: pastel blue, yellow, mint, green, red or modern white. The intention is for the shed to not be an extension of the home, but rather of the woman herself. Women use she sheds to feel relaxed and pampered, without having to put a dent
in their wallets or book a plane ticket. It’s a space where women actually enjoy dedicating their time so it’s important to decorate accordingly. She sheds may be a free space but they can also be renovated for holidays. Transform the open space into a mini haunted house for Halloween to add an extra scare factor for trick-or-treaters. During winter, the shed can be revamped into a real-life gingerbread house filled with bright lights, fake snow, decorative trees and the smell of freshly baked goods. Barbie may have sung, “Imagination, life is your creation,” but she sheds are giving Barbie a run for her money for the ultimate dream house.
