My head is still spinning from attending all the events,

exhibition openings and unveilings this month. If you aren t a photo enthusiast then you could have been forgiven for wondering lately if Singaporeans had just discovered the art of photography. Everywhere you looked there were exhibitions opening, photo talks and seminars, digital workshops and photo events. A growing number of event orgainsers have finally discovered a fact we all knew a long time ago, that when they put on a good visual event it always attract photographers, so now they are catering to us by organising photographic competitions and activities relating to their main event. The SACA Subaru International MTB event at Sentosa was a prime example. Well organised by the team at ClubSnap it offered high drama and close action, easily accessible to all photographers well done guys. The

recent Alliance Francaise/NAC inspired Month of Photography was a gala event with three very wonderful photography exhibitions from both Singaporean and French photographers. It was great to see so many Singaporean photographers gracing the walls alongside international shooters. At one the biggest photo gala events held in a long time, the Art Museum hosted the opening of the Pierre & Gilles Beautiful Dragon exhibition to a very large crowd of artists, photographers and arts supporters. The Esplanade, and the tunnels leading to it, have become a haven for photographers displaying their works with more than four exhibitions on show there

Portraits is the theme of this months edition of PHOTOi and as we all shoot images of our family and friends, we are all very familiar with the concept of portraiture, but we all still make mistakes. Whether you own a point-andshoot, SLR, medium format or DSLR, chances are that you have taken someone s portrait and yet we all have different ideas about what makes a good portrait. Maybe you're very good at sport or nature photography or just shooting still life s but have never been comfortable taking portraits of people or your children but wish you could just make your photos more interesting and unusual. Fast and Furious Canon launches the new MkII - 8 mega pixels + 8.5 frames per second

Hundreds of photographers had the chance recently to test the speed of the world's fastest digital SLR camera, the new Canon EOS 1D Mark II in an action packed environment.

The 8.5 frames per second EOS 1D Mark II easily captured gravity-defying Aprilia motorbike stunts and high speed go-karts racing around the Marina Bay car park at an exclusive 'Canon Pro Shutter Bug' event. The more than 400 photographers attending throughout the day were able to use the new EOS 1D Mark II to capture the action on this 8 megapixels camera that can fire a burst of 40 consecutive shots at 8.5 frames per second. "There's no better way of trying the speed of the camera than to provide an opportunity for the photographers to capture fast action shots," said Melvyn Ho, Vice President, Singapore Business Group, Canon Singapore. Later Canon also printed out the some of the photographers exciting images onto 24-inch posters using one of its newest largeformat printers, the BJ-W6200.

Goals Galore The

second PHOTOi assisted CANON S-league soccer shoot was a big success and many thanks to the 23 shooters who were treated to a goal-scoring feast at the Hougang Stadium recently. The kind staff at FAS had allowed photographers to get close to the action and with the

help of CANON, who loaned us a MkII and lens, we all had a lot of fun that night as a total of nine goals were scored. The results of the nights shooting where quickly posted on ClubSnap and many of the photographers attending later entered the CANON/S-league digital soccer photography competition. Stay tuned for the results in next months PHOTOi.

It was standing room only at the first of the

Hasselblad Be-There series of talks by local professional photographers who are all using Hasselblad equipment for their photography assignments. Organised by Shriro Singapore, with support from Epson Singapore and PHOTOi, the first speaker was noted Singaporean photographer Albert Lim, who entertained the very large crowd at the SAFRA Bukit Merah venue with insights and tips on how he shoots both his stunning editorial and architectural pictures. The next speaker in the series of six bi-monthly talks is Mr William Ng, an internationally ranked master portrait and editorial photographer. He will be appearing at the SAFRA Bukit Merah venue on Friday July 30,2004, at 7.30pm, we advise participants to pre-register.

Gallery opens

The Photographers' Gallery (TPG) has presented 'Sensuality in Singapore' as its opening exhibition from June 25 until July 21, at its new premises in the MITA Building. Showcasing the works of Thierry Delarue, TPG aims to provide a unique space for creativity and expression in the visual art of photography. 'Sensuality' is a product of a year's work in Singapore, by Thierry focusing on defining the meaning of 'sensuality' through the Asian female form, playing with light and shadow on black and white prints. "WILL YOU BE HUNG" Ever dreamt of having your photography works displayed in a gallery? Well, Now You can! Big Walk

Rain or shine/night Rain didnÂ&#x2019;t dampen the hearts of a large group of keen photographers who gathered recently to learn how to shoot night shots of the esplanade and surrounding buildings. Local photography identity, Willy Foo, had organised the beginners guide to night photography through ClubSnap.org.

Shooting with a Nikon F50 and a 70-300 Sigma lens, Lin Yek Wahh captured a some good images at the recent New Paper Big Walk held at the Singapore National Stadium.

Some of the places visited included Sheares Bridge to shoot the City Skyline, views of the Esplanade, the Fullerton and Merlion before visiting High Street Centre and Clarke/Boat Quay areas for traffic streaks photos.

Sinar Wins TIPA

Gin, the Singapore Sinar Distributor, called us the other day to say that he had just gotten back from touring Switzerland and France, where he was on hand to watch as the Sinarback 54M digital back won the coveted TIPA award 2004/2005 for the best digital back. Sinar are also bringing to Singapore the talented New York fashion and portrait photographer, Sarah Silver, on July 9th at the HDB Auditorium Toa Payoh. The Temasek Junior College Photographic Society (TJCPS) organised a Seminar-cum-Exhibition recently at the College. The objective of the Photo Event was to promote interaction among the photography societies of various schools and to heighten the interest in photography as an art. A large number of students attended the seminars where noted fashion photographer Geoff Ang and PHOTOi Editor John Cosgrove entertained the audience with career tales and hints for their photography. Prizes were also given out to winners in the TJC Life photo competition, which was open to all students from Secondary schools, JCs, Polytechnics and tertiary institutes. Acers Ferrari 3200

Seagate's 5 GB 1" HDD (CF Type II) Seagate has announced it plans to produce a 5 GB HDD in the CF Type II form factor. Having seen a prototype recently I was very impressed with the build of this little metal encased device which will be available in either 2.5 GB or 5 GB capacities. It has a rotational speed of 3600 RPM and features 'RunOn' technology, which is likely to be a buffering system to avoid data loss if the unit is knocked or vibrated in use. Seagate will also be producing a 'built in' version of the device, which is designed to be hardwired into devices such as MP3 players or PDA's.

Montage Held at the Suntec Singapore International Convention

and Exhibition Centre Theatre, the Montage 2004 Seminar fielded five speakers lecturing on a myriad of photographic topics ranging from celebrity photography by Mr. Russel Wong to the memorable slide show by Mr. Yip Hoi Kee sharing the rich history of photography in NUS since the early 60s. The second stage of the Montage 2004 - Magic of Light events, was well supported by over 400 members of the public and students attending. Mr. Kwek later conducted the prize presentation to the winners of the Montage 2004 photographic competition. awards of each of the categories. Mr. Kwek also officially opened the Montage 2004 Photographic Exhibition. Held at SICEC Theatre Level 2, the 100 A3 photographs on show were selected from the 600 competition entries. The exhibition has now relocated to the Visiting Exhibition Gallery, Level 2, at the NUS Museum. The seminar resumed with Mr. Ernest Goh's speech on Life as a Young Photographer with inspiring tips and advice to all professional photographer wannabes. Mr. Russel Wong then took over the microphone to share his experience in Celebrity Photography with all, including his behind the scene stories of the movie sets of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "Hero", and the latest yet to be released "House of Flying Daggers", featuring Zhang Ziyi, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Andy Lau. Montage 2004 seminar closed with a talk by Mr. Vincent Bockaert on the workflow of Digital Imaging, and he shared some the new tricks and tools of the trade of DI with the audience. Every now and then I make a little movie in my head where I pretend I am a famous Magnum photographer, off to shoot some violent demonstrations in exotic locations. This was in Paris, at a manifestation (demonstration) against US President Bush, on the occasion of his visit to France to commemorate the d-day landings in Normandy. All photos by Yian

have just started working as a stagiare (intern) at Chez Magnum (House of Magnum that s what they call it here) in Paris, and this has been one of the best weeks of my life. I thought it would be most inappropriate of me if I didn't share my experiences with you. Words will not even describe what a wet dream come true this job is. Everyday is a new wonder. Here are my top three stories in my first week. At the end of my first day, the woman working next to me called out Ciao Josef . I said to her in amazement, That s not Josef Koudelka? . She simply went, Yup! I can t believe that I had just met Josef Koudelka. Now when I say met , that s a slight exaggeration. I meant I saw the back of his head as he was walking out the door. He is the epitome of the old-school Magnum photographer, aging and grizzled, a tuft of white hair, photo-vest that looked like it was never removed, M6 slung casually over his shoulder. He was strolling out the door, on his way to either dinner at a street side Parisian café or some impossibly romantic faraway place like Iran. When I was introduced to him the next day, I found out that he was in town for only two days, and was indeed heading to Turkey for a week. He didn t have much time for me as he was busy preparing for his trip, and promised to look at my portfolio when he returned. I hope he will have time in between editing all those new slides. Somewhat opposite, both in terms of age, shooting style, equipment used, and time spent with me, is Gueorgui Pinkhassov. We have spent a lot of time together this past week, often working late, as he needs a whole bunch of photos printed. He is originally from Moscow, though he looks a little Indian to me. One of the friendliest and most talkative Magnum photographers I ve met, he buys me beers and shares with me his philosophy on life and photography. In general terms, he is much more of an emotional

photographer than a rational one, which is doubly fascinating for me as I am being the geek that I am exactly the opposite. He has the reputation around the office staff as being able to make interesting photos in uninteresting locations. Now I m not sure precisely which part of Bhutan they think is uninteresting . That s where he s headed next week. I begged him to take me with him, jokingly of course and not expecting a reply, but surprisingly he agreed to bring me along on a trip when I was free. I helped Harry Gruyaert with portfolio reviews. Every year, the whole of Magnum meets once to decide on, amongst other things, the new applicants. The first part of this process is the pre-selection, where portfolios that are sent in to the office are screened. It is heartbreaking how quickly this stage of the process goes. Granted, most of the portfolios were pretty mediocre and some were even completely off-topic (artsy self-portraits, etc.), but there were some photos that I would have loved to have taken. All I can say is, one better put ones three best slides up front. Of course, everyone knows that the only way to get into this most elite of organisations is with a photographer to propose you to the rest of the membership. Even when you get accepted, there are still two more hurdles, after the second and forth year, to pass from associate to full membership. So that s the story of my first week at Magnum. SIMPLE STUDIO

PORTRAITS Setting

up a home studio need not be a complicated matter. Yes, you need space but not as large as what you would think. I often convert part of our living room into a temporary studio, just by rearranging some of the furniture and making sure that part of one white wall is kept clear so it can be used as my background. As space is limited I like to keep things as simple as possible. I use an Electra 400 monolight with either a softbox or umbrella attached as a main light and a large white reflector to bounce light back on the shadow side. I also sometimes use an Electra 200 monolight or my hammerhead flash with a slave attachment as either a fill, a background light or as an occasional hair light. For different coloured backgrounds I have 2 background stands and a pole to drape my

material backgrounds over. These are simply, 4 metre long, 150cm wide, non shiny velvet type material bought from Spotlight cheap, effective and washable. If you don t have background stands then these are also light enough to hang from a curtain rail, a cupboard etc or can be draped over furniture. You can also make your own reflectors a large piece of white card, silver foil, mirrors, pieces of polystyrene or even a white tabletop. Using a softbox on the flash makes the light softer and more flattering, the bigger the light source the softer the light, but a cheaper and just as effective alternative is a white translucent umbrella which works similar to a softbox when you shoot the flash through it.

Setup: My typical lighting set up for a smaller space, has the subject positioned at least 2 metres from the background to avoid shadows. The main light is positioned a few feet to the left and slightly forward from the subject and angled downwards and my white reflector is placed to the right and fairly close to the subject so as to lighten any shadows cast by the main light. I find this to be not only simple and very effective but also less intimidating for people who are not used to a studio environment. Although space is an issue, it is important to be able to move back from your subject so that you are able to use a longer lens such as a 70-200mm, as this will give more flattering results with no distortion and also allows you to zoom in really close for a more dramatic portrait.

Studios: If you are just considering venturing into studio photography then I suggest you get one monolight, lightstand, umbrella and a light meter with flashmeter capability first to keep your costs down and practice every lighting setup you can think of until you are completely confidant and ready to experiment with a multi light setup. I find a flashmeter to be an essential item as it allows you to know exactly how much light is falling on your subject, background etc, what aperture to set your camera on and allows you to be a lot more creative and confident. A flashmeter measures the amount of light emitted from flash units at the speed of the flash. If money is an issue and a studio light is an impossible purchase then simply create your own natural light studio.Any room with a well lit window or glass door will do, just use this as your main light and set your backdrops and reflectors up as you would in a flash studio. Sometimes the light will be soft and gentle and other times harsh and directional. To soften harsh, directional light just hang a fine net curtain in front of the window similar to a Softbox on a flashgun. Most of all, have fun, experiment and enjoy!

photography is the development of digital cameras, reasons being IÂ&#x2019;m not rich to always go and develop photos and I'm really too lazy to do so. Luckily for me, in 2002, my course in Digital Media Design (Nanyang Polytechnic) had a new complementary elective module, Digital photography.

I bought my first digital camera, a Sony Cybershot F717 in late 2002 and I have been using it ever

since then. By far, all of my photographs are taken in Singapore, as I haven't got the chance to go overseas with my camera. But I'd love to, when time and money allows. I consider myself an experimental photographer primarily. I don't want to constrain myself to one form or style of photography alone. I like to find interesting angles within things that people usually tend to overlook, make it stand out, so that whenever they pass by those places they can appreciate them more. I will side more to colour. I believe a good photo will stand out by itself without any adjustments, but I also believe that the desire to make something that is already nice to be better with slight adjustments or even a major overhaul is all up to the individual's liking. Lumix DMC-LC1

The

other day while I was wandering around Arab Street with my Digital Bootcamp class from Objectifs, I realised that I had the best of both worlds. On one hand here I was surrounded by an amazing visual collection of sights and sounds as diverse as any exotic location and in the other hand I had access to a great camera to capture all my photographic impressions on, the Panasonic Lumix DMCLC1. It isn t too big nor is it to small. It isn t a toy camera; it s a dedicated serious piece of photographic hardware. Looking a lot like a Leica (in fact that is where it gets its great Leica DC Vario-Summicron Lens from) the DMC-LC1 is a camera that has a foothold in two different generations. Styled in the fashion of the retro rangefinder so popular with photojournalists and people photographers over the past 70 years, the DMC-LC1 is also a leader in today s modern digital age. The 2/3 5.0 megapixel image sensor and the f2.0-f2.4 Leica DC Vario-Summicron 3.2x optical zoom lens provides a very potent package to anyone wanting to work a crowd or capture an exquisite reportage or landscape scene. It quickly becomes obvious that Panasonic wants something different for users of the DMC-LC1. They want users to benefit from Panasonic s years as a leader in digital technology and yet at the same time maximise the users digital experience. So they have packed this camera with cool features and their latest technology. Once you get past the retro-Leica styling cues that give you the look and the feel of a Leica without having to pay out a large part of your CPF for one, things start happening. Up front all the lens controls are easy to use, light in touch and well numbered (surprisingly Panasonic have stuck with tradition as all the zoom numbers have been converted to 35mm equivalents making it very easy to understand). This

gives you a 28mm wide angle that zooms up to a 90mm portrait lens, suitable for most shooting applications. And its very quiet just like a Leica. You can run this camera as a fully manual or in a priority mode. Gone are all the scenic modes and assistance shooting menus instead here is a dedicated serious photographers camera, one where you can make all the decisions if you so desire. Shooting is a breeze, in fact I found it easier to use the LCD rangefinder eyepiece rather than the LCD monitor, it had that appeal to it and besides it just felt right. In manual focus mode you have 2 choices of focusing assistance, a visual mode or an assisted zoom mode. All the controls are well placed and mimic those early rangefinder cameras. Up on top there is a cool built-in flash, which allows you to shoot, either direct or bounce flash. Simple and elegant would be the most used phrase to describe the DMC-LC1. A clean stylish design, retro but trendy, and yet everything is there where you would expect it. A choice of single or 2.7 frames a second burst capture modes, spot or centre-weighted or multiple metering modes, manual or priority exposure modes, exposure compensation modes, four different flash modes, manual focus or autofocus, motion image movie capture capabilities and adjustable white balance controls, why can t other manufacturers make it all as easy to use as Panasonic has done. Shooting from the street or in the studio the Lumix DMCLC1 impressed me greatly as a good all-rounder capable of capturing what I wanted to see in my photos. Strong saturated colours, sharp images (I mainly used the autofocus why? because it was so good), easy to use operations and a quick playback. Downloading was as you would expect a breeze, using either the USB connector cable or a card reader for the SD card, my images were rendered to more than 14 megabytes in size and very suitable for my A3 printer.

Panasonic MEGA OIS MEGA O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer)

The

concept is simple correct the common occurrence of hand-shake and preserve the image quality of your digital image. Hand-shake or jittering, occurs every time you take an exposure. Jerking the camera as you stab your finger down on the shutter button will always cause camera shake, and this ruins many great pictures. As the sun goes down so the occurrence of camera shake increases. Panasonic wants users to benefit from access to longer and larger lenses with their growing stable of Lumix digital cameras so they developed and built in their MEGA O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer) hardware to make sure your pictures come out right each time. That s right it is a hardware system and not some software image correction service. Panasonic is the first manufacturer to make an O.I.S system available on its compact digital cameras series.

The MEGA O.I.S in the Lumix range of cameras uses a gyrosensor to detect jitter (camera shake) and then moves the lens to correct it. Panasonic insists on using an optical image stabilizer rather than an electronic one because with optical processing there s no image degradation. In the event that hand-shake is detected

by the built-in gyrosensor, a signal is relayed to a microcomputer,which instantly calculates the amount of compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts O.I.S. lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. This entire process - detection, calculation, lens adjustment - takes just tenths of a second but you can t even tell it s happening. All you ll notice are beautiful, sharp images. There is a choice of dual modes in the MEGA O.I.S. In Mode 1 it provides continuous stabilization, making the image easier to see in the view finder and LCD monitor. While Mode 2 stabilizes the image on the instant the shutter button is released. This keeps the MEGA O.I.S lens within a narrow operating zone, allowing it to achieve a higher stabilizing effect in all directions. And also because only the center part of the corrective lens is being used, the image quality is much more superb. The MEGA O.I.S is available on the Lumix DMC-FZ10, DMC-FX5 and DMC-FX1 cameras. The proof is in the shooting and from close up to long telephoto shots the MEGA O.I.S delivers each time, in fact you can begin to rely on it, as it is a very comforting thought to know that there is a great O.I.S system in place correcting your camera shake.

Master of their Craft

William Ng Master Photographer

Turning a hobby into a profession, the dream of many but the reality for William Ng when he went from working as an engineer at Keppal Shipyards more than 18 years ago, to develop into one of Singapore s leading master commercial and portrait photographers. It all started with him taking photos of the ships he was working on, later he contributed to annual reports and then developed an eye for industrial photography. Now his talents lie in the field of corporate and family portraits. You have to be very focused and specialised, otherwise you will be competing with the mass market. You must be unique, advises William. Find out all you can about your client, go that extra mile to be more creative and different. One of the areas I really like to shoot in, even though it doesn t pay well confides William, Is shooting the stills for movies. I have shoot many movies, local and international, and I love shooting the actors as their real emotions and expressions always comes out in my pictures. I also love shooting babies, they can melt your heart with their expressions and character. William has been a Hasselblad user now for more than 20 years and is still a film shooter although he says he can t avoid digital these days. In 98 he became a member of the Master Photographers Association UK and since then has won numerous awards including several gold awards for his fine portrait and corporate work. His future plans include continuing to develop his style in fine corporate portraiture and also to contribute much of his extensive knowledge back into the Singaporean photography community. William s passion for teaching and helping many young photographers has seen him work at Temasek Poly where he teaches fashion and architectural photography. I believe it is very important to give back to the community, to teach and mentor the many young talented photographers so that they can grow and develop here in Singapore rather than chasing opportunities overseas. Every photographer has to grow, your skill and talent is only one part of becoming successful, you have to learn how to market yourself and then learn the business of photography. William Ng will be speaking at the second of the Hasselblad Be There talks at the SAFRA Bukit Merah function room on Friday July 23 at 7.30pm.

THE GOLDEN FOOTPRINTS By Judy Lee Pai Chuan

Pai Chuan launched her The Golden footprints book and exhibition at the Singapore Calligraphy centre recently. In search of her own spiritual fulfilment, Judy retraced the golden footsteps of Buddha as he trekked on his journey towards enlightenment through western Tibet. Judy shares with reader s glimpses of sacred places and the many fabulous sights she encountered during her month long journey. Places she visited included Lhasa's Jokhang temple, Ngari, Tsamda Canyon and many others, but most of all she

shares the spirit and inspiration she found in Tibet. The hardcover book contains over 90 colour photographs, not only showcasing the amazing scenery she encountered but also giving us a glimpse into the everyday lives of the Tibetan people, their vibrancy and their culture. Portraits As defined in the Doubleday Dictionary.

A Portrait is: A likeness of a person, a vivid description of something or someone. To Portray is: To represent by drawing, painting or photograph etc. A good portrait not only captures a personÂ&#x2019;s physical likeness, but it also captures something of the personÂ&#x2019;s character at that moment in time. A good portrait should always express an emotion i.e. joy, anger, disappointment, inquisitiveness, thoughtfulness etc.In photography, when you take the time to look after the little things, it makes your pictures look a whole lot better. Here are ten tips that can greatly boost the quality and creativity of your people pictures.

Lessons left or right, up or down. Avoid including objects that will distract your viewers. Ideally a portrait should be shot at f4 or f5.6 for a shallower depth of field but try opening the lens all the way to f2.8 for a different shot. Remember to focus on the nearest eye to the camera. 4. Perspective: Move Look up or down. Climb up on a wall, kneel or lie down on the ground. A distinctive perspective will always give your images a fresh look. Children look better when composed at their eye level. Women on the other hand like to be photographed from slightly above their eye line as it s more flattering. Guys tend to like being shot from a slightly lower eye point as it makes them look stronger, taller and more dominant. 5. Work outside. Natural light is much more pleasing than harsh flashes but always try to avoid the midday sun. Harsh shadows cover and hide people s faces so photograph them either in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower and the light is warmer. If you have to shoot during midday, take your subject to an area of open shade or under a tree and use fill flash. Dial your flash down one stop from your exposure. Overcast days produce nice even lighting conditions that will allow you to shoot almost anywhere. 6. Fair weather photographer: Don t be put off by bad weather you may get a great portrait of your child in the pouring rain, either looking out a window or running in the rain. Try shooting from the shadow side out for a different viewpoint, it gives you great rim lighting but watch the shading. Simply stand in the shadow area and position your subject to be lit from behind by the sun, expose for the shadows and let the highlights take care of themselves. The best tool to carry for portrait photography is a foldable light reflector as you can bounce light from any angle or create a shade area when none is available. Light tastefully and always aim for simple, natural effects.

7.Fill the frame: Get closer to your subject and make sure that your subject dominates the picture. Few portraits need everything from head to toe so move in closer and avoid a distracting background. Often we stand just too far away because we are too shy. Ideally your subject should occupy at least 75% of the frame. If you have a camera that allows you to vary lens lengths, try using either a 90mm or 120mm lens. Never use standard or wide-angle lenses as they distort the picture. 8. Talk to your model. There is nothing ruder than not saying anything to someone who is giving up their time to pose for you. Start with a minimum of delay and shoot with ease. Encourage your subject with words like great shots , just what i want, excellent pose . Never say Just one more shot! as it shows you don t know what you are doing. Don t be a control freak or a bore, instead be as entertaining as you can do, and remember to limit your touching. 9. Make people feel at ease. When your subject begins to trust you then they will relax and the better pictures will start to happen. Photographing your subject free and easy in their own enviroment always helps. If you like photographing in children make use of whatever props are available. Let them feel comfortable in your presence by showing them their pictures on your camera LCD screen. Children love to move about so take them outside to run and play. 10. People skills: Often the only way to get a good portrait is to know when to press the button at the right moment. It takes you trusting yourself and your equipment and then working on your people skills. Surround yourself with good images gleaned from magazines and books and they will help your portrait ideas.

1. Don't waste the opportunity Most people usually have only a short time to pose for photos so shoot as many shots as you can. Luckily dCompact and DSLR users have the benefit of large storage cards but film shooters should also shoot heaps of film, which is cheap compared to the cost of having to recreate the moment. When photographing people, turn on the cameras motor drive and take multiple frames of each pose. Murphy s law dictates that eyes will close and awkward facial expressions will always ruin many fine portraits. 2. Move off-center Many cameras focus on a "spot" in the center of the viewfinder so you often get a shot where the subject are standing in the middle od the frame surrounded by wasted space. To correct this, focus on your subject by only half depressing the shutter button, this activates the camera s auto focus but not the shutter. Keep your finger firmly in this position so that the focus is locked, then reposition your subject within the frame for a more pleasant composition before finally fully depressing the shutter button and capturing the image. 3. Beware of those annoying distractions What are those flowers or telephone poles growing out of your subject head? Correct your image by either moving
