You win some and then you lose some... I won! No not 4D, but just as important, I was finally able to

enter a couple of local photo competitions and while I didn t win any of the great top prizes I still managed to pick up a couple of minor consolation slots. Many thanks to Edwin and the team at Canon Sg for supporting both the Canon S League Digital photo contest and the Canon/Digital Life Photo marathon. Many thanks also to Lester Lim (FAS) and Billy Teo (Digital Life) for organising such great events. I don t know what you think of competitions but I do think that they re a very necessary component of your photography education. A chance to compare your skills against your peers is seen as a prime indicator of who we are as creative artists. My hearty congratulations to all those who won and also thanks to all who took the time to take part. Talking recently with one of the more consistant winning photographers around, Mr Liew Tong Leng, about how he wins so often, he said taking part is the first step towards increasing your chances of winning. The next step is to research a: the theme and b: find out who are the judges, and then you have a clearer idea of what to shoot and how or where to find those great images. The search is now on for The Digital Photographer of the Year 2005 at www.photoi.org. This competition is proudly supported by NIKON, but already the judges have noted that a number of entrants are making things hard for themselves. Entering three images of the same object, taken from different angles, is a sure recipe for your entry to be over looked by the judges. If you can t make a decision, don t ask the judges to. Find a friend and get them to help you pick the best one as two or more entries of the same subject cancel each other out in the judging process. The PHOTOi Best Photographer in Singapore 2004 competition is nearly at its end and we will be hosting a prize giving ceremony at The Photographers Gallery (MICA building) at 7.30pm on Thursday November 18, so all photographers and readers are invited to come along and view the winning entries from the last 11 competitions. Sadly we continue to lose great photographers and below

avid black and white photographer Eddie Sung laments the passing recently of yet another icon of photography, Richard Averdon. PHOTOi will be on show at a couple of great events over the next two months, up first is our Prize giving (Nov 18th) and then it s four days at the Sitex show being held at the Expo center from 25th to 28th of November. Come along and enter the fun competition we are running titled Show People and then after you have output your entry on the EPSON printers and stuck it on the photo wall, take a break with us at the lounge area, I will also be conducting creative PHOTOSHOP classes for free throughout the four days, so if you have a query or want to learn how to play in Photoshop with your pictures come along and join us. The final event is the Fun @ McDonalds photo competition being held at the West Coast Park McDonalds on the 5th of December. (More details inside this edition or online at www.photoi.org.) Congratulations to Mr Teo Bee Yen on being awarded a Singapore Cultural Medallion for his photographic work. This the first time in 14 years a photographer has been recognised in these awards.

Shutterbugs and Samba Photos by Jonathan, John and Kath Cosgrove

Barcelona

at Robertson Quay was the venue for the second CANON PRO-SHUTTERBUG event. Colorful Samba Dancers, Stilt walkers, Contortionists and Fire-eaters were all on show for the hundreds of Canon enthusiasts who turned out to shoot with the new Canon EOS20D. Canon Singapore also had a full range of Canon EOS digital SLRs on hand to try out, along with matching Canon lenses and accessories. As well as the latest Canon printing revolution the range of PIXMA printers were also available to demonstrate complete input-output workflow solutions. Talented photojournalist Jonathan Drake spoke on the Canon EOS 20D, its features and then gave an account of his recent experiences with the EOS 20D at the UIM Powerboats. Many thanks to SanDisk, who supported this event with loaner CF cards and many great cash deals on new purchases.

scantily clad cover girls, super powerful motors pulling high G s, exotic and expensive machinery, corporate booths with lavish buffets, high octane action and drama on every corner, great action photos and color everywhere you looked, all this best describes the recent UIM FORMULA ONE POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP which paid a return visit to our shores in September. Circling the event, shooting from every vantage point, were literally hundreds of photographers. As I travelled around past different photo labs and digital print bureaus on the Monday following, I spotted many different versions of the second lap crash, the fiery boat or the winners and also many shots of the beautiful FHM girls.

at speeds close to 220km/h on Marina Bay and yet you could get really close to the action at several of the corners. I was shooting with both my own 80-200 and a 300mm Nikkor 2.8, kindly loaned to me from Nikon Singapore and some times I found I was too close to the action. Jonathan Drake had been out on the Saturday practise sessions shooting with his new Canon EOS20D for the Canon pro event launch the next day and his pictures where really great ( he had the sun then, we had rain). The key to shooting great pictures at this sort of event is to find a great corner and shoot plenty of images, vary your shutter speeds and plan your shots to include where possible two or more competitors.

Just who is Greg Gorman?

not to mention who owns the rights to the imagery. I often ask myself what is really left to the photographer as an artist today. The entire picture of celebrity photography as it was once known, has radically changed over the past twenty years. As a struggling artist today, it is critical to stand up for your rights as well as your imagery. The talent needs as much direction in creating their personal imagery as they do in creating their on screen character personas. And by the same token, photographers need to pay attention that they are not losing their own identity by giving in to the homogenous requests of the talent s publicists. Granted, it is a fine line today that one has to walk in order to please both the talent s requests and the photographer s images as an artistic representation of themselves. For a photographer to be a true success as an artist, he must be capable of developing and showcasing a unique and discriminating style in his art that becomes recognizable when viewing the images.

When you hear people listing a specific photographers

strengths as The ability to photograph motion picture and music personalities in many unique portrait styles , then you know they must be talking about Greg Gorman. Known the world over for his stunning black and white or colour images of famous movers and shakers in the entertainment industry, Greg is coming to Singapore later this month to pass on his wisdom and insight on the exciting world of celebrity portrait photography. So PHOTOi decided to call him up and ask him a few questions about just who is Greg Gorman?

I am a very hands on person said Greg, When I began photographing personalities in the early 70 s, I thought celebrities wore their own clothes, did their own hair and makeup and basically knew what was going on. However, I quickly learned that I was wrong. I had assumptions and my own ideas as I was shooting, but kept them to myself. It wasn t until the contact sheets came back from the lab the next day, that I realised that many of my assumptions were true and that I should have relied more on my instincts. The best way to learn your craft is simply by doing it. No classroom or textbook can replace the actual real life experiences of pursuing your art. After reviewing countless contact sheets from my photo shoots, I quickly realised that the talent I was photographing could definitely benefit from more of my direct input. The most valuable asset I had to offer my clients was my very candid honesty. What I do for a living is based on that very honesty and trust. Personalities are often much more comfortable hiding behind the façade of the characters they are portraying on film. When it comes time to strip them from their alter egos , it is often difficult for them to focus on their inner selves . That is where the magic

of my work begins. Establishing a relationship with the talent based on trust, understanding and confidence organises the building blocks of the photo session. Today, more than ever before, this is crucial. Celebrities are so insulated that reality itself often becomes the real question. The managers, agents, publicists, directors and producers attached to the talent themselves, make it next to impossible to break through this outer crust, so to speak. I am often dictated to the length of the photo session, what the talent will wear, who will be doing the makeup and hair, when and where the session will take place,

A member of the US Epson Stylus Pros group, Greg is becoming well known for passing on his skills and techniques to other photographers all over the world. Digital has really freed me up as a photographer and also afforded me the opportunity of being more in control of my imagery and now, thanks to Epson, I make all of my own archival prints. Before I relied on someone else s vision to interpret my imagery. Today from captures to final output that vision is totally mine. Digital should not be feared but rather embraced. Greg Gorman s seminar Faces of Fame is being held on Thursday November 18 from 1pm to 6.45pm at Suntec Level 3 theatre. Entries strictly by invitation only, please contact Claudia at EPSON Singapore for more details, tel 6337 7911.

In the heart of the city an exhibition, titled "Myanmar: A Pictorial Odyssey," attracted a lot of interest. Jointly organised by Adanac Communications, Myanmar Airways International, Sedona Hotels International and The Heeren Shops, and sponsored by Canon Singapore. The Heeren Shops showcased in their foyer a series of 40 photographic images selected from the private works and collections of four individuals hailing from both Singapore and Japan. The photographers - Jane Chua, Raymond Wong, Tan Yang, and Akiko Fujita displayed images depicting a broad variety of Burmese landscapes, culture, people, and architecture. There were powerful images of beautiful sunrises, nostalgic sunsets, inspiring stupas and portraits of friendly logyi-clad (sarong) locals, illuminating cultural experiences, devout monks, and venerable pagodas. The selected exhibition pieces were picked specifically to give the viewer a sense of place that is anachronistic yet distinctly Myanmar. "It is not about showcasing an already commercial destination, but rather capturing and sharing the inherent beauty of a lesser known country," said Jane Chua, the only professional photographer in the group.

Crossing Bridges During October The Photographer's Gallery hosted a very unique exhibition titled "Crossing Bridges: A Visual Journey through Central Java by Singapore and Indonesia Photographic Communities. What made it unique was the fact that 36 photographers and enthusiasts representing three online photo forums [Fotografer.net, ClubSNAP and Offstone] from two different countries [Indonesia and Singapore] came offline for a photo-hunting event, said Eddie Ng, initiator and organizer of the event. The event was entirely grassroots driven and not aligned to any "official" cultural agencies from the two countries. In the womb of the web, bureaucracy was bridged. At Yogyakarta, friendships were made, added Eddie.

My Sisters Talented local photojournalist Lance Lee recently held a solo photography exhibition on the subject of transsexuals at the Utterly Art Gallery in China Town. A large audience of friends and family viewed Lances Black and White and digital images that he had shot all over the world. Lances work on documenting the lives of Transsexuals is well known and this was the first of two exhibitions that will coincide with the launch of a second photographic book titled "My Sisters: Their Stories II". The follow-up exhibition next year in October will feature new works (and a new style) on the same topic of transsexualism.

Supported by NIKON, epSITE, Indocafe and Beaver's Pub, the exhibition showcased the talents of 26 of the original group of photographers. Renowned architecture photographer Mr. Albert Lim, epSITE manager Mr. Tan Haur and PHOTOi editor Mr. John Cosgrove helped out as curators in selecting the images for the exhibition.

Part of a bigger project called Project BraveHeart, in which the CDC hopes to inspire more young people to get involved in community service. Tried and Tested

Canon PIXMA i4000 Words and photos by John Cosgrove

Canon has been launching new innovative

digital products all year, one every three days if you sat down and worked the numbers, but by far one of the best has been the debut of the new PIXMA range of ink jet printers. Bringing with them new technologies plus innovative design, look and feel the PIXMA Printers were created with users in mind. These new Bubble Jets promise to stretch the creativity of users with the combining of Canons copier technology with their ink jet printers. Offering user-friendly functions, normally reserved as options for higher- value models, even in basic models in the below S$300 range, Canon are raising the bar once again. The PIXMA range of printers starts with the compact $99 iP1000, and rises in style and capabilities in nine steps all the way up to the iP8500 professional 8-colour photo printer. Black is beautiful and the new PIXMA iP4000 mid range fitted nicely onto my small printer shelf. Luscious curves, smooth sexy skin, flowing lines, a snazzy duplex tray for bottom loading and DOUBLE sided printing capabilities. Yes now I can print a small

book without having to worry about whether I had lined up the paper the right way. Canon has combined their photo copier paper transport technology within the PIXMA ink jet body to give users the capability of laying out a book and printing it easily and expertly. They even offer a special double-sided borderless paper package, which includes a book F&B cover set. Simplicity is the key to successful digital printing, that and a good workflow routine, so after I loaded the printer drivers into my iBook and it was time to push print . It only took a couple of small 4R prints for me to get the hang of the iP4000, what to change on the printer menu and what not too! And there wasn t much deviation from the normal set-up. Using a set of sample images shot recently on a Canon 20D as my test set plus an international sample image I quickly output my images. The images created were bright and colourful with a good range of tones, what we have grown to expect from canon but Man was it a fast printer. Fast and quiet I caught myself a couple of times wondering if it had connected with the iBook when the print suddenly appeared. This printer is aimed at the average amateur cum small household user, one who will only print photos every once in a while and spend a majority of time on letters and the such, to that end the ink trays accommodate an extra large 2nd Black ink tank. Overall a very good printer that s fast and very capable, now what book do I want to print first?

Wacom Intuos3 Tablet Words by John Cosgrove

Many years ago when I first discovered something called Photoshop I was

working on a system called Quantrel. What a system, it was basically a stripped down Mac Quadra 840 and a very large graphics tablet. With it we turned cars different colours, reshaped and edited double page images for a car magazine. The cost of the Q system then was a staggering $250,000, but the concept of working using a graphics tablet was really cool. My how the world has turned since those heady days, now I can work on my iBook (100 times the processing power) and undertake complicated graphic applications on a Wacom 6x8 Tablet, all without having to break the bank. The new Intuos3 range of tablets, which come in three sizes (4x5, 6x8 and 9x12 inch), is a major step forward in state-of-the-art computer input systems for serious photographers and graphics pros. It greatly extends the functionality of Wacom s pen tablets and optimises the way users interact with computers and software through built-in programmable Express Keys and Zoom/ Scroll Touch Strips! An onboard set of customisable ExpressKeys default to keyboard modifiers Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and Spacebar and are completely customisable. In addition, new finger-sensitive Touch Strips allow users to zoom or scroll with one hand while working with their

Wacom battery-free, pressure sensitive pen in the other. The Software Bundle included with Intuos3 also includes industry-leading software: nik Color Efex Pro2 standard edition and Corel Painter Essentials 2 The Intuos3 tablets will be produced in three sizes with active areas of 4x5 ($399), 6x8 ($569) and 9x12 ($729) (inch). The previous version, Intuos2, will be continued for customers who require larger sizes (12x12, 12x18) and supports both Apple and Microsoft platforms. Using the tablet requires a wee bit of a learning curve for those overly familiar with their mouse. But Wacom has included a number of quick, easy to understand tutorials, for you to learn with. After a while it becomes second nature to move with the pen rather than the mouse. I really found it great when working with the pen tool and selecting edges for clear cutting. Of course you can easily navigate through a variety of programs with the tablet and it is not limited to graphics suites. But the pleasure of the tablet and the pen is when painting with colours on photographs as you can vary the flow and width of the brush just by pressing down harder or softer, and then if you make a mistake just reverse the pen and rub it out what could be cooler.

Yain on the Move

Going Places (Or Not, Not, as as the the case case may may be) be) (Or Words and photos by Yian

The gypsy part of Perpignan.

So I ve finally figured out how it works how to go places. Or not, as the case may be. Last year, the first thing I did when I came to France

was go to the Visa pour l Image festival in Perpignan, the world s largest photojournalism festival. Of course I knew no one, and knew nothing about how the system worked. I ended up relying on a few kind souls to show me around and prevent me from getting lost. Still, I ended up wasting much time being at the wrong places and talking to the wrong people. This year was completely different. Going to Perpignan while working as an intern at Magnum opened my eyes to how things got done. As the ad says, membership has its privileges. The first evening that I was there, I went to a party thrown by Doctors Without Borders, one of the biggest aid organisations in the world. Also known as MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres). Not only was it great not to have to crash the party, as was generally the case last year, but I was feted as the sole Magnum representative, as no one else had arrived from Magnum (they were all coming later that evening to Perpignan). My protests to the tune of But I m only an intern were lost amongst deaf years. Come and have your picture taken with us The chef (that s the chief, not the cook) gave a press conference in French, most of which I did not understand. However, words like Darfur and Sudan filtered through. On a whim, I decided to ask the young MSF volunteer I was standing next to about how photographers work with MSF, genuinely curious, but having absolutely no idea. She told me a few things, but then said that she really had no idea either and passed me on to someone higher up the chain. As I talked to more and more people, what started as a whimsical question became a more and more polished proposal, until by the time I was talking to the chef, my innocent question transmogrified into I am a photographer and I would like to work with you on these dates in Darfur, visiting A, B, and C camps and travelling via D, E, and F. He was really impressed with my presentation and started telling me all about the details of the operation. I was

)

14

not impressed. Or should I say, overly impressed. Somewhere in this conversation I realised that I had certainly bitten off more than I could chew. The logistics involved were so overwhelming that I decided fairly quickly to remove myself out of that conversation and back paddle to the buffet table and the champagne. A few hours later, at around midnight, I was socialising at the Café de la Poste, the central meeting point of Perpignan, when the rest of the Magnum team came in for dinner. The first thing my boss said to me was So I hear you want to go to Darfur! It turned out that he had worked at MSF before coming to Magnum and knew the chef there pretty well. I explained to him that I had pretty quickly gotten cold feet and maybe I ll just start my career with something a little simpler, if that s alright by him. He tried to convince me that the safest and easiest way to go to the Sudan (and anywhere indeed) is with an aid organisation, as they pay for and organise everything the travel, logistics, permits, insurance, fixers and drivers. Not to mention lodging, food and water, which are apparently not available even if you had money in Darfur. And he told me getting me in was as simple as him placing a call to his old buddy. I m not convinced immediately, but by the end of the week, I m inspired by the rest of what I see at Perpignan (in particular Jane Evelyn Atwood s projection) and sold on the idea. However, somewhat anti-climatically, after some follow up back in Paris, I find out that MSF had already sent another photographer. So that s the end of that particular adventure. There were other options of pursuing smaller agencies who were operating in Darfur, and going by myself and contacting MSF on the ground (they promised local support if I chose this option), but in the end, Gary Knight (of VII fame) and Jerome Delay (AP) convinced me that there were other stories more suited for me to pursue. But that s another story altogether.

The Green, Green Grass Of Home? Words and photos by Kath Cosgrove

wafted toward me, whilst impatient snorting, stamping and whinnying sent comforting shivers of excitement down my spine. Was I home again? No, but close enough! Walking into the stables of the Singapore Polo Club with the high tech Canon EOS 20D Digital SLR camera in my eager hands felt like some kind of time warp travel back to my youth for a second chance to capture the way of life I knew and lived but never had the time or inclination then to shoot. Like a kid in a candy store, I explored the stables through the EF-S 18-55mm lens finding the light weight of the 20D effortless to hand hold at the slower shutter speeds needed in the subdued stable light without the use of flash which could easily startle these beautiful animals. Then time moved on a few years out to the dressage and show jumping arena to my early freelancing days of capturing all the action at the local horse shows but this time it was the Singapore Polo Clubs In-house Show jumping and Dressage Competition and I had the latest digital technology on my side. With a 70-200mm lens mounted on the camera I found a shooting position outside the arena fence

where I could photograph the action coming straight towards me. A five frames per second continuous shooting mode coupled with the high speed Ai Servo Auto focus and nine focus points to choose from ensured that horse and rider were superbly captured in full flight. With a fast 0.2 of a second start up time the 20D was always ready when I was to capture high quality images with no apparent shutter lag on its 8.2 megapixel CMOS sensor driven by it s new DIGIC II processing chip. This sophisticated little black beastie not only captured the action but also the attention of nearby spectators with its distinctive no nonsense sounding shutter and professional look. But all too soon my adventure was over and it was time to pack this new extension of my arm back in the camera bag and time warp back to the office to download, print and wash that wonderful Horsy smell out of my clothes. Humble

Beginnings

About the photographer:

Phil Date Looking back at these photos that I took four years ago during a seven-week long trip (from Singapore to Laos by land and then on to Vietnam) reminds me of how far I ve come in photography. These photographs represent my humble beginnings as a complete novice, armed only with a Nikon F65 and basic kit lens. Not that I think that these are bad photographs; in fact, I hope these show that you don t need an expensive camera and lenses to produce quality images. But at the time, I knew little about the relationship between aperture, shutter

speed and film seed, instead I was setting the camera to Auto and happily snapping away. If I went back to Vietnam with my D70 now, would I be able to capture the same and/or better images? I would like to think so but I also believe that a huge part of success in photography is about being in the right place at the right time. I doubt that I could find the same old lady with the rubber tires on China Beach and even if I did, it s unlikely I could achieve the same shot, which was taken spontaneously as I sunbathed and relaxed. I learnt a valuable lesson on that trip: keep the camera with you; you never know when the perfect shot will present itself!

As a teacher, I am lucky to have plenty of free time to pursue my hobby and passion. I enjoy shooting most subjects: still life, travel, fashion and street photography. However my passion is for photographing people, especially children. I also have the opportunity of sharing my knowledge with eager young minds and I ve just set up a Photographic Club at Tanglin Trust School, where I work as a Mathematics Specialist. I hope you ll see some great work from my protégés in the near future although we re very much taking our first steps along an awfully long road. A bit like me a few years ago, setting off for Vietnam

Postcards

The Streets of Pingyao Words and photos by Ken Cheong

Three

hours to photograph the old walled city - Pingyao

After experiencing one of the worst traffic jams ever on the Beijing-Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan highway, we finally arrived at the ancient city of Pingyao on a cold foggy morning to join the crowds attending the Pingyao International Photography Show 2004. Pingyao, a World Cultural Heritage site located in Shanxi Province, (south west of Beijing) has been synonymous with photography since 2001 when it first staged the Pingyao International Photography Festival. Today, Pingyao s status as a center for photography is seriously threatened by large-scale photography shows staged in other major cities. They have followed in Pingyao s footsteps of attempting to reap the economic gains from photo-tourism . The main purpose of this trip to Pingyao was business but I still allowed myself about three hours to photograph Pingyao two hours that evening and an hour early next morning prior to departure. There was definitely not enough time to photograph every part of this city or follow the city wall, which runs about 6 km around the city, so I decided that the famous Ming-Qing Street or Nandajie Street were the places to visit and photograph as they were only a tenminute walk from the hotel. It was almost 5 pm when I began my photo-walk towards Nandajie Street. As expected, the common subjects of the many hundreds of photographers besieging Pingyao were the elderly men and women, children, street hawkers, old doors, windows and walls. The Pingyao folks in general were very approachable and friendly to photographers and it was a pleasure to observe how the Pingyao folks interacted with these photographers at times trying to figure out what the photographers were actually photographing and how to pose naturally in front

of the cameras. While I was happily participating in the capture of similar subjects, I realized that such images do not offer any clues of where they were taken. I wanted my pictures to include elements or historical markers that will give them a sense of locality. The 80-200mm lens was used to pull in the North City Gateway, which became the background marker for many of my portraits and candid shots along Beidajie Street. Formally the commercial centre of Pingyao, Nandajie Street is now a shopping and eating district for tourists. Although traditional businesses and craft still thrive in this part of the town, my Chinese friends felt that they did not have any ling gan (inspirations) to photograph here. No icons of westernization like KFC, McDonalds or Starbucks exist and yet I could sense that in the eyes of many photographers, another kind of modernity permeates in Nandajie Street. To them, Pingyao was very different from what it was when they were here a decade ago, less commercialised. The sun was low in the sky casting a light golden tinge over the parked jinrikshas, antiques of the stalls, fruits and vegetables. Feeling uninspired after an hour s photography, I returned to Beidajie. As I climbed up the staircase leading to the rooftop rooms of the hotel, I looked down and found a nice view of the busy street with the hawkers in the foreground. I waited for the right elements to fall into place. With a 50mm F1.4 lens attached to my digital SLR, I spent the last half hour capturing activities near the hotel hawkers and children. I was back in Nandajie Street for my one-hour photo-walk at 7 am the next morning. The motivation this time was to capture a quieter street without tourists. As expected, many photographers were already out strolling along the streets. The hour yielded a number of good images to remember this trip to Pingyao.

Master of their Craft

I

04

got into photography at a very late stage,

Born in 1955 in Hiroshima, Japan, Wayne s parents were sadly suffering from the after effects of the Hiroshima atom bomb blast so he was placed at birth in a local orphanage. Adopted later by a Japanese American family he moved to LA where he grew up. I was in my late 30 s before I took up photography, prior to that I was just hopping from job to job, he recalls, I really hated the jobs I was doing but it was earning me good money back then in LA. Fed up with the direction his life was taking he decided to head off around the United States to explore his passion for the outdoors. I really love the outdoors, mountains and the lakes, but when I looked at my walls they were quite bare and I didn t want to hang other peoples pictures up there so I decided to buy a camera and take my own pictures. Not knowing anything I brought a Nikon FG and shot my first roll of film in Utah, later at the processing shop, the owner showed me a blank film, I had no idea then that you had to control the aperture and shutter speeds to get good exposures.

Three years later Wayne graduated at the ripe old age of 42. All my friends and family where quite shocked that I had actually finished something, I wasn t the oldest in the class there were some students attending there in their 60 s. The arts center was a very commercial focused institution and this benefited me greatly. Wayne also left the college with a new partner, soon to be wife, Ling, a Singaporean photography student. She suggested I return with her to Singapore so I came over for a month and with her help showed my portfolio around, the response was great and I ended up shooting editorial and advertising jobs for new clients. We both decided that I should return to the states and pack up and come back to live in Singapore. On his return Wayne and Ling set up their first studio eight years ago just down the road

Photo by John Cosgrove from their current studio in Joo Chait. His clients now have included SIA, OCBC, M Hotels, CitiBank, Bass Hotels, Epson, Scotts, Singtel, Great Eastern Life and ABC Styles. As photographers we have separate clients, my strengths are in lighting and people photography while Lings are in stills and designing pictures with good use of props and colour. Post SARs things have dropped right down and I am now teaching in between assignments at Ngee Ann Poly and other places. We both like to travel a lot to visit new places to shoot for our portfolios and to also extend my photojournalism work. When I started shooting photojournalism many years ago I didn t want to just stand there and shoot images so I decided to get involved and volunteered my time as a counselor at the local crippled children s society. For the first year I didn t even take any photos, then later I started to take the camera along. I like to work more as a documentarian rather than a photojournalist as I find I haven t got the skill to get those right moment style of shots, so I took time to recreate my own visuals with my subjects and the results look so natural. I shoot using a wide variety of equipment; from 35 mm Nikons to medium format Hasselblad s and 4x5 Linhofs and lately we are discovering digital photography with a Phase One back for my 503 Hasselblad. I have been fortunate as I never expected that a

hobby I had a passion for could end up being a great job that I could get paid for. My passion is still for people photography but the money is in shooting commercial projects. If you are wondering, yes! Wayne has returned to Japan once but only to Osaka, he has no intentions just yet of returning to Hiroshima, One day but not right now, I have heard I have a sister in Japan somewhere so who knows, one day we might meet. Photojournalist Wayne Umahara will be presenting the fourth in a series of Be There talks by Hasselblad Professionals at SAFRA Telok Blangah. This event is organised by Shriro Singapore and will be held on the 26 November, 7.30 9.30pm. Five tips for photographers: 1. Make your photography personal. 2. Shoot with a passion. 3. Have compassion for your subjects. 4.Learn to understand with your heart. 5. Develop a theme for your work. Wayne and Ling Photography Pte Ltd 111 Everitt Road, Singapore 428635 (65) 64403882

A year later a mutual friend who taught photography to adults at a local high school invited him to join the classes. I went there to learn about black and white printing and taking photos but I was surprised when people offered to buy my scenic pictures. Friends later recommended that he pursue his talent after the class had a field trip to the world-renowned Arts Center, College of Design in Pasadena, California. They all combined to help him produce a portfolio for his entry submission to the college. I had the ideas and designs for my photos but I didn t know a thing about how to shoot the images or even how to light them so they all helped and we submitted it. Later I again visited the college where they were hosting an event which showcased the work of other universities and colleges in the states and I was quite taken with the photojournalism work some of them where offering. I still am very fond of my photojournalism work and I almost changed schools but my letter of acceptance to the arts center arrived and my new career started.

Lessons

Shooting well Love them or loathe them, cellphone digital cameras are here to stay. In 2003 the market for cellphone cameras started to take off in astronomical proportions and this year alone the manufacturers are expecting to sell more than 200 million models. The range out there in the marketplace is very extensive and they come in all shapes and sizes and prices. The size of the image sensor ranges from sub 1 mega pixel VGA cameras up to 2.3 megapixel high quality devices and you can get flashes, either built in or as add ons. Samsung had just announced a 5 megapixel camera phone with the CCD. The SCH-S250 is also rumoured to contain a 92 mgb internal memory and a MP3 player. PHOTOi went to the source to ask just how easy or hard it was to become a good cellphone shooter. Steve Lewis is the Director of the Imaging Business Unit at Nokia and an avid user of his 7610 a one-megapixel cellphone. Nokia is trying to make the whole imaging process as easy as possible for users. You have to be aware of the huge changes digital cameras have brought on the smart phone industry. You can now share those unplanned special moments in your life so easily. The phone is so central to your lifestyle now, it s in your pocket all of the time, the battery is always charged and it s on hand when those unplanned special moments happen . The use of a compact digital cameras falls under the heading of planned photography. That s when you see something happen and you have to make the decision to go and find the camera. You might then discover that the batteries could have run down because of low usage and then that special moment has gone forever. The cellphone digital camera on the other hand is always within reach. Now you have a choice to share them using a wide variety of services, GPRS, MMS, email or Bluetooth. With a normal digital camera you have to wait to get back to the PC download them and then store them away in an album or on a CD. For me, going away for a trip now I won t take my normal digital camera as I am very comfortable with the quality of the results I am getting from my 7610, adds Steve.

with cellphones

Words and photos By John Cosgrove and Steve Lewis

Video is going to be the next big trend, with the development of 3GPP video encoding those special moments which are always unplanned in your life, like the first steps of a child, are often missed as you don t have the camcorder on hand when you really need it and children don t perform on call. Now many of the new phones offer on demand shooting You can now send and share these images, still or video, online via infra red or blue tooth, GPRS emails, MMS and SMS it s now so easy, but make sure you have the right plan from your service provider. The range of new phones like the 1.3 mega N6630 due in December have advanced setting configurations via an informative help wizard. Today all Nokia s use the Symbian operating system an industry developed open standard OS for smart phones It comes with easy to use interfaces and you can easily add on additional games and programs to your phone. We have developed business relationships with both Kodak and Ulead and offer free of charge, image management programs like PhotoExpress or Snap shots which also gives you the ability to shoot off 6 shots in just 2 seconds, plus a bracket mode offering 6 different exposures, all controllable via the OS. So does it stand up to the test? Well lately a number of pros and specialists world-wide have been out and about shooting images for the Nokia City Stories book project. Sony Erickson started the whole ball rolling with an online photo extravaganza earlier in the year and now everyone is raving about their instant imaging capabilities. When you look through the City Stories book you can see that the photographers started out on a journey of discovery with this new medium. First they shot just the basic stuff, themselves, their friends and family, but when they learned about the creative opportunities offered by a cellphone camera they all went wild and crazy, shooting people and objects from many different angles and lighting conditions. The book is a very good collection of images showing how to view the world through another fun instant sharing medium.

D D

I shot using both the Samsung E800C and the Nokia 7610 and yes I followed the same pattern, family moments, then travelling to work on the buses, then finally trying my hand at landscapes. Both phones were easy to set up and share from using either Bluetooth or GPRS.

10. 11. 12. 13. 14.

Think of the basics, - rule of thirds, leading lines etc, all make for great pictures

Patterns, colours look for the things that attract your eye.

The various shooting modes can offer many exciting opportunities with effects like black and white or sepia, editing or blurring.

Adding on an additional flash can extend your capabilities.

Video greatly expands your multi-media horizons, shoot 10-second clips and edit them in camera.

Lighting controls the quality of your images, better to shoot in softer lighting conditions as harsh light blows out your highlights.

framing your pictures with a gate or a window to keep your viewers attention within your 15. Try picture frame.

It s the fun quirky moments in life that you can capture with your cellphone camera that make this type of photography so much fun and challenging. Enjoy the difference it makes but please remember Nokia s advice to be responsible with your photography, ask permission before taking a strangers picture.
