An exercise in patience you will see that there are just two types of photographs on show, ones that require quickness of eye and an equally sharp trigger finger and ones that required dogged patience, skill and a deeper understanding of light to pull something from nothing. What I am talking about here is landscape photographs, our theme for this month. Exquisite golden glow morning or evening shots of mountains, lakes, forests or seascapes form one of the biggest sections of any photo competition/exhibition. There is always something special about a great image shot during the golden hours, capturing the marvels of nature or the creativity of mankind. Mankind and nature are so intertwined these days that it s often hard to separate them. Here in Singapore having a HDB block in the background may seem a necessary distraction but take a look at how some of the many talented local photographers have incorporated man-made structures into their landscape photos. Mark Aviles, Johnny Koh, Tan Wei Te, Ivan Yeo, Albert Lim, Darren Soh and Tan Wee Sim have all made landscapes their signature dish. Their ability to look at something we all take for granted and turn it into art is always amazing. Myself, I m an action people kinda guy, if its moving I can shoot it but when it comes to shooting a landscape I defer to the better skills and eyes of the true landscape photographers amongst us. On page 20 you can find out how Darren Soh works on his landscape photos, many of which will be in his upcoming exhibition/book. Photo societies and clubs are great organisations to be part of, especially if you can get your pictures graded by experienced judges. Many moons ago when I first started entering club competitions I found out that I still had a lot to learn about what makes a good photo. The judges were often RPS fellows or associates and they were brutal with my

pictures but on the other hand they were also quick in helping young inexperienced photographers like myself with the hints and ideas on how to improve our pictures. We quickly learned the basic mistakes not to make on landscapes, portraits and general photos. Mind you I still see those same mistakes appearing in exhibition landscape photos today that I saw 20 years ago. Things like horizons not straight, horizons cutting pictures in half, trees appearing out of nowhere in the tops of photos, inconsistent framing, a definite lack of a center of interest in a picture, and the list goes on. Online forums which offer critiques are okay, a bit faceless and can sometimes be a bit self defeating but you just can t beat a face to face meeting with a judge to ask them how and why your picture isn t a winner. The trick here is to remember when to talk and when to listen. I still take my hat off to any photographer who carries their tripod up a mountain in the early hours of a freezing morning and then sits there for hours waiting for the light to fall in one particular way well done guys/girls.

One of the best web based e zines out there is the Canon Professional Services Europe monthly newsletter. In one of the latest issues they had several great stories on shooting at the Olympics and also a funny story about a German photographer who made a movie by using a Canon EOS D60 to take more than 140,000 still images, at one-second intervals while it was strapped to the roof of his car as he drove from Rome to Oslo. One of the other great features of this site is called getting the shot an ongoing series of 60 second mini docos about famous shots taken by famous photographers. Canon launches the 20D

Canon s replacement for the critically acclaimed 10D was unveiled recently in Singapore. The new EOS 20D digital SLR currently leads the field in prosumer DSLR s. Offering a whopping 8.2 megapixels @ five frames a second, all wrapped up in a metal alloy body, it is fast turning out to be the camera of choice for many pros and amateurs alike here in Singapore. Powered by the same DIGIC II processor that s found in the EOS 1D Mk II, the new 20Ds 8.2 megapixel CMOS sensor offers outstanding colour reproduction and processing speed. The 5fps can be held for a total of 23 frames, which is ideal for both action and nature shots. COMEX

At the annual COMEX show at Suntec City, a large number of photographers and buyers gathered to catch the many great deals that were on offer. Underwater housings

for compact digital cameras were all the rage while great deals on storage devices and SD/CF cards were also there for the taking. PHOTOi went along to catch the action at one of Singapore s premier consumer shows.

Hasselblad masters opening EPSON, Hasselblad and Shriro came together recently to present one of Asia's biggest photography exhibitions known as the "Hasselblad Masters Exhibition". Master photographer Tay Kay Chin was the local participant in the celebrated Hasselblad Masters exhibition, which opened at the Epson EpSITE in Wheelock Place. Kay Chin s work was featured alongside those of Mary Ellan Mark, John Perry and other Hasselblad Masters from all around the world. On a yearly basis Hasselblad, the world's oldest makers of fine cameras, nominate twelve photographers of different nationalities and disciplines as "Hasselblad Masters", in recognition of their contributions to the art of photography. The award is considered one of the highest in the industry and the list of current and past winners is made up of artists of international standing as well as up-and-coming photographers who are likely to make a difference in the photographic world.

The activities where opened by Mr. Kwek Leng Joo, President of the SCCCI, who also handed out prizes to contestants in the Our Singapore photo competition. Eye é City A Visual Account of the Last 24 Hours of 2003 Eye é City - A Visual Account of the Last 24 Hours was held for the second time in Singapore at the year-end of 2003. The response was overwhelming with 298 participants. After several rounds of selection, 100 images that best uphold the spirit of the event were featured in an exhibition-cum-publication launch which opened on 17 Sep 2004 at ARTruim@MITA. In comparison with photographs submitted for the first year, the 100 images collected in year 2003 s Eye é City gave a more extensive and varied rendition of the facets of life. Behind every picture seemed to have been a story of hope and disappointment, joy and pain, bustle and desolation encapsulating the physiognomy of the city. The images also depicted participants views of the city they live in and their relationship with it. Participants of Eye é City 2003 ranged in age from 18 to 65, with the majority between 20 to 30 years old from countries like Japan, United States, Britain, China and Indonesia, etc. In early March, the selection panel met up to choose 100 images from a large array of 900+ photographs for an exhibition-cum-publication. For the publication, friends were invited to pen their memories of the city, thus providing a verbal complement to the images. The photo book is now on sale at major bookstores at $20 each. Eye é City is supported by the National Arts Council, RGB Color Pte Ltd, Lee Foundation, Mdm Ng Wai Hin, Hong Leong Foundation and Ruby Photo Co Pte Ltd.

Chinatown

The Chinatown Photographic Club recently organised a combined exhibition with clubs from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Held at the Kreta Ayer CC the event was opened by Mr Lee Kwok Meng, Chairman of the Kreta Ayer CC. Works on show were very well presented and came from the Photographic Society of Singapore, MacPherson CC Photo Club, Boon Lay CC Photo Club, SPM Malaysia, The Photo Society of Jahor and www.Photo-inc.com.

Will U B hung

The final selection of the Photographers Gallery Will U Be Hung exhibition were made recently where judges selected a number of prints from the hundreds entered by photographers to hang as a new exhibition at the Gallery. This style of exhibition was seen as a great way for photographers to get their work exhibited in a gallery without having to go to great cost to mount it themselves. Staff at The Photographers Gallery were very impressed with the response and plan to run another one next year.

City Stories Nokia s inspirational online photo exhibition and book was launched the other night at a reception at Chijimes. Based around the megapixel Nokia 7610 camera phone, the aim was to inspire photography enthusiasts and nurture fledging photographers by getting 50 prominent photographers in the Asia Pacific region to contribute to the City Stories website.

than 50 teams turned up for the Spot and Shoot one day photographic discovery event held recently by the Singapore History Museum. The mixed teams of three had to navigate their way around the streets of inner Singapore looking for photographic answers to clues about famous and infamous places along their journey.

Four local lensmen hold exhibition to promote digital photography to the masses

Four photographers hoped to inspire their fellow HDB-dwellers to make art, through photography. Their exhibition, Small arms Big Matters!!! aimed to convey their belief that seemingly small , inexpensive tools can produce big and beautiful results, and that anyone can pick up digital photography and produce art. Armed with affordable, compact digital cameras, the quartet traipsed through Singapore s heartlands to capture the uncommon in the commonplace, the exquisite in everyday life. The four lensmen come from four different backgrounds: one is a cabby, another s an engineer, the third s a visual artist, and the last member of the group is a photography instructor and former press photographer. Francis Lee, Andy Tong, Vidson Ng and William Goh draw upon their rich, disparate experiences and histories to create unique perspectives that are encapsulated in their various photographs. All four share a common love for photography, and are members of the Tampines North Community Club Photographic Society. Said Francis Lee We think that photography should be for everyone, for the masses. We hope that through our exhibition, the average member of the public, the heartlander, will be encouraged to pick up photography as an artform. The Small arms Big Matters!!! exhibition, which was co-sponsored by Canon, was officially opened by Mr Johnny Go, (Senior Manager) and Ms Cacy Tan, (Senior Community Development Officer) of the NorthEast C o m m u n i t y Development Council at the Tampines Regional Library.

Greg Gorman is coming

American celebrity portrait photographer will be bringing the Hollywood Stars to Singapore in November. epSITE, Epson Imaging Gallery, are currently preparing for their next exhibition entitled Faces of Fame A Perspective by Greg Gorman , which will be launched on 17 November 2004. Greg s earliest work was done in the 1960 s and one of his strengths has been photographing motion picture and music personalities in many unique portrait styles. Celebrities he has photographed include Leonardo Di Caprio, Robert De Niro, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Sharon Stone, Kim Basinger and Pierce Brosnan to name but a few. In the music field, Greg has worked with Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Elton John and Mick Jagger amongst many others. Greg s work has been exhibited and featured in many publications in North America, Europe, and Asia. Greg Gorman will also be conducting a seminar specially organised by Epson where he will talk about his work, demonstrate his portrait and printing techniques on Epson printers. A painted bridge Pacita s painted Bridge

chronicles international artist Pacita Abads quest to transform the battleship grey Alkaff bridge over the Singapore River into a vibrantly multi-coloured, public outdoor sculpture. This Philippine born artist has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums and art galleries all around the world and for this book she has collaborated with Singaporean photographer Michael Liew to produce a visual gem and enchanting tale that is meant to be an inspiration to all artists who are passionate about bringing public art to the community for all to enjoy. All images were taken by Michael who was using a FujiFilm FinePixS2 Pro digital camera for the very first time. I normally shoot on slide film so this was a first for me . The book is currently in the production stage and will be printed by the end of September and should be in all good book shops by early October.

At the heart of the image

The word is out, Nikon have begun accepting entries for the biannual Nikon Photo Contest International 2004-2005. Open to all photographers worldwide, entrants can now enter online or by traditional mail. From September 1st to November 30th, 2004, with the theme of "At the heart of the image , entrants will be able to submit photographs into two categories -- "Art" and "Documentary." Entries to the art category must exhibit artistic qualities and convey a fresh sense of creativity while entries to the documentary category will be judged on the extent to which they communicate the time and the background of the scene and show the magic that exists in daily life. The NPCI contest has been in existence since 1969, and is being held by Nikon Corporation to provide an opportunity for photographers around the world to communicate and to enrich photographic culture for professionals and amateurs alike. Renowned among photo enthusiasts worldwide, the contest has so far attracted more than 1,190,000 photographs from a total of 280,000 photographers, with the last contest receiving entries from as many as 102 different countries. A Figment of History By Ngo Peng

History benefits from the backdrop of Yogyakarta, cultural capital of Java, where an interesting chapter was written at the Central Java Photo Trip in May 2004. I was there as a participant and a writer of its first-day edition. For the first time in the world, 36 photographers and enthusiasts representing three online photo forums [Fotografer.net, ClubSNAP and Offstone] from two different countries [Indonesia and Singapore] have come offline for a photohunting event, states Eddie Ng, initiator and organizer of the event. Not even the popular Photo.net or Pbase.com has done something similar. What is also unique is that the event was entirely grassroots driven and not aligned to any official cultural agencies from the two countries. In the womb of the web, bureaucracy was bridged. At Yogyakarta, friendships were made. Photo history, in this sense, mirrors Javanese history on this thin and fertile strip of land where different religions and cultures have mingled and learnt from one another. The rest, as they say, is history. But a figment of this photo history is now coming to The Photographer s Gallery (TPG), MITA Building, Singapore. From 6 to 20 October 2004, 26 photographers will showcase the results from the photo-hunting event in an exhibition titled Crossing Bridges: A Visual Journey through Central Java by Singapore and Indonesia Photographic Communities . Renowned architecture photographer Mr. Albert Lim, epSITE manager Mr. Tan Haur and our PHOTOi editor Mr. John Cosgrove have helped out as curators and judges in selecting the images for the exhibition. Some of the exhibiting photographers include: ClubSNAP moderator Mr. Larry Loh, Mr. Willy Foo, KOMPAS (national daily in Indonesia) picture editor Mr. Arbain Rambey, Indonesian photo icon Mr. Goenadi Haryanto and A.RPS (London) recipient Mr. Budi Darmawan. Realizing the poignancy of this historic event, NIKON Singapore has backed us up and this prestigious brand has always been keen to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of photographers. epSITE EPSON Imaging Gallery has sponsored the printing of the exhibiting images. Indocafe and Beaver s Pub were the F&B sponsors for the opening reception. Indocafe s success has been partly built on the friendship between Indonesia and Singapore. Central Java Photo Trip 2004 has been a continuation of that relation. Tried and Tested

Tamron SP AF17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di LD Aspherical What a difference 1mm makes. Being used to an 18-70mm zoom lens on my D100, it was a real treat to recently pick up one of the new Tamron SP AF17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di LD Aspherical wide-angle zooms and find that the extra 1mm makes a world of difference to my field of vision. Digital SLR s are great at one end of the lens scale but their smaller APS-C sized image-capture sensors means we all lose out at the wider end as the angles of view are a lot narrower and conventional wide angles just don t cut it any more. Now there is a new breed of digital wide angle zooms appearing at sizes that used to be beyond the scope of most amateurs. Featuring their branded Di (Digitally Integrated Design), the Tamron SP AF17-35mms optical system is designed for digital cameras and yet it allows you to also take great images with your conventional film SLR.

The bottom Line: Guess what! You can use these lenses on both film and digital SLR s with no worries at all - what a bonus! And so is the price so check them out at all good stores now.

The digital 25 mm wide angle at f2.8 gave me just what I wanted as I wandered around the OSIM Triathlon, wide expansive views and the ability to get in close to the action, something I had missed out on for a long time. It lets you get close to your subjects so that you can shoot a more creative image by emphasizing or exaggerating your main subject against a wider background. The fast aperture of f2.8 at the wideangle end of Tamron s 17-35mm Di provided me with the capability to shoot in dimly lit conditions without camerashake due to the extra shutter speeds. It was a treat just to be able to shoot wide angles creatively again.

It s a basic plug and play operation to scan your negs. Unhook the reflective cover and then trip the latch on the scanner cover and up pops the Auto Film Loader. Carefully slide in your negs until the automated travelator takes them up and then using the Smart Scan interface select preview and watch as it builds each negative. Select the images you want, select their output size and then it s only a short wait until the task is complete. Waiting time varies due to the output size generated; an A4 from a 35mm slide at 300dpi will take up to 3 minutes while high dpi s can take much longer.

Canons new product lines: Canons list of new products continues to grow rapidly with the launch of a whopping 26 new products in September. There was the new EOS 20D DSLR, a brand new XL2 high end professional video camera offering broadcast quality DV, a top of the line PowerShot G6 dCompact which is offering 7.1 megapixels, JPEG and RAW capture capabilities, an inbuilt ND filter option and a great super macro function. The PowerShot G6 is joined by four other PowerShot models, the A95, a mid level 5 megapixel dCompact, the A85 a 4 megapixel mid level dCompact that comes equipped with a 1.8 inch LCD screen, the S70 is a 7.1 megapixel high tech dCompact which includes a new underwater exposure and white balance mode and finally an all new 3.2 megapixel A400 entry level dCompact which comes in four bright colours and is designed with features for the fun loving people out there. TAKE CARE OUT THERE! By Kath Cosgrove

spend many years and many hundreds of dollars building up our photography kit, then we just throw it all in a bag and out we go, ready to capture the world - but are we really prepared? Here are a few ways to keep both you and your precious equipment in good health. Use the bag! Do you really need to carry your camera around your neck on the way to your destination? If so, be very careful, as impact damage is a leading cause of sudden camera failure. Remember, the average camera has almost as many parts as a car but in a much smaller body and can be very fragile. When a camera takes a blow, the impact can often twist the body casting. When at home, don t leave your camera on a table or cabinet with the strap dangling down kids and pets just have to give these a tug to see what new toy lies at the other end! Invest in a good Camera Bag! It is important for both your own health and that of your gear to invest in a good quality, sturdy bag that is comfortable for you to wear and convenient to use. Make sure you try it on before you buy, as what fits one person may not fit another. Whether it be a backpack or a shoulder bag make sure there is good padding both around the external edges, especially where it comes in contact with the body and on the straps themselves. When buying a backpack, look for one with a padded waist strap, which will help, take some of the weight off your shoulders. Internally there should be enough room in the bag to fit each piece of equipment within its own compartment, as the last thing you want is two pieces of gear rubbing together and causing. Bags with removable inner padded inserts that Velcro into place are great as they allow you to place equipment exactly where you want it and distribute the weight evenly. There should be plenty of extra pockets for filters and accessories. Ensure the outer fabric is durable and has some type of rain protection.

Lighten the Load! Never overload your camera bag - only take what you need for the outing you are about to embark on. This will not only save your back and shoulders but will reduce the risk of damage to your equipment. I know it s tempting to take everything; "just in case" but on how many occasions do you actually use everything? If you are an avid nature or landscape shooter consider changing your heavy tripod for a carbon fiber model, they may be expensive but the difference in weight more than makes up for the difference in price especially when you are lugging all your gear into some remote area. To lighten the weight of your camera around your neck, replace your camera strap with a nice wide, springy, Optech strap it makes your camera feel 50% lighter.

Cover those lenses! Always use a UV or skylight filter on the front of all your lenses as the front element of a lens is covered with a relatively delicate coating, which can easily be scratched or damaged and is very expensive to repair. Keep your lenses covered with lens caps and back caps when not

in use. And remember the lens hood isn t an optional fancy fashion statement. It s a very necessary piece of photographic equipment. It keeps glare off your lens, it protects it from rain and also acts as the first line of damage resistance in a fall. Beware of dust, dirt and sand! I m not saying don t take your camera to the beach just be careful! One grain of salty sand can potentially cause major damage to this high tech equipment and salt water is a known killer. Never sit your camera down on the beach or even unprotected on a beach blanket. It is fairly easy to get grit stuck between the moveable sections of a lens it will sound or feel gritty when you focus and will not zoom as freely. For extra protection, put each piece of equipment into a plastic zip lock bag within your camera bag. Take extreme care or avoid changing lenses in windy, dusty conditions to reduce the risk of dirt getting inside the camera body. If it s windy and sea spray is blowing around consider using a waterproof camera instead. Weather resistant doesn t mean waterproof!

Don t let a little rain stop you from taking great pictures but be aware that if water gets into your camera it can cause computer components to short circuit. If you are out shooting landscapes, nature or sport in the rain, set up your tripod, keep your camera and lens well covered with a rain cover or plastic bag until you are ready to shoot and then simply uncover only the front of the lens and take your picture. Use a soft absorbent cloth to wipe any moisture off the filter between shots. You can make your own rain cover by cutting a hole in the bottom of a large thick plastic bag for the front of the lens to fit through and using some tape or a rubber band to seal the bag around the lens. Make sure the bag is large enough to completely cover both lens and camera and then simply reach up through the normal opening of the bag to operate the controls. Nothing fancy but it works. Keep it clean! The outside of your camera body can be cleaned with a soft bristled brush and a soft, lint free cloth. Open the memory and battery compartments regularly and remove dust with a soft brush or a blower and check for any signs of corrosion. For film users, use a blower brush to clean the film chamber but be careful not to touch or blow air or dust onto the shutter blades. Clean lenses only when needed, first with a blower brush to remove dust particles and then if needed use lens cleaning solution or your condensed breath and lens tissue or a micro fiber lens cloth. Never apply solution directly to the lens but instead put a drop on the tissue and clean the lens with a gentle circular motion, working from the centre to the outside. Never touch the front of the lens or the bristles of the brush with your fingers, as oil from your skin can be harmful to the delicate lens coating.

Transient landscapes Photographs by William Chua

Since my first overseas trip many years ago, I have

always been intrigued by the various landscapes that I have seen around me. Each of these landscapes is so spectacular and amazing that it makes me realize just how small we are in this vast land of ours. On a recent trip to Rome, Florence and Pisa, it allowed me many great opportunities for some serious landscape photography. With the legacy of Rome's history seen all over the city, I was bewildered by the grandeur of this ancient city. The city is best travelled on foot, as each small street will lead you to a great view ahead. The Trevi Fountain, Castel Sant' Angelo and St Peter's Church offers great picturesque views. Each fountain, each sculpture and each piazza tells you so much of this city. As I proceeded through the ruins of the city, I was overwhelmed by the majestic views around me. To satisfy my cravings for greater views, I climbed up the top of the dome of St Peter's Church and snapped away! The artistic view of Florence is best captured from either Piazzale Michelangelo or the Duomo. The Duomo, 463

steps up the top, was the tallest building of its time and dominates the city with its enormous dome. The birdsÂ&#x2019; eye view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo is simply breathtaking, and you can see the grandeur of the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio from here. Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence, is most attractive when viewed with the setting sun. It gives a golden glow to the bridge and buildings around it, and you feel that you are immersed in a city of gold. A visit to Italy would not be complete without going to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It definitely is a great architectural wonder of the world. When viewed from afar, and compared with the other upright structures around it, you will be marvelled at how it stayed in that leaning position for centuries. The landscape around us is very transient, and as I leave these beautiful places behind me, I am very happy that I have captured the best moment I see at that point of time, for I know that the very same scene would look very different when I revisit the place again. marilync@singnet.com.sg

- Singaporean Art Historian Photographer

Ken Cheong has been creating visual documentaries of life in Singapore since the late 80 s. It s all about capturing on film the beauty of a place going into transition. He compares it visually to a snake shedding its old skin. An individual s memory of a place is disappearing fast as the landscape here changes daily so it s my goal to record what s happening now before it has all gone. An accomplished tutor in photography, museum curator, exhibiting photographer and cultural project manager, Ken has travelled to many places around Asia to document life as it is now and it s relationship to the changing world. Current projects also include work from both Laos and India. Asked where he finds his very dramatic well lit pictures, he s quick to explain that in all forms of art, when you are really passionate about a subject you will always get good pictures, you just have to wait for the right light and know how to use it. Light, its quality and effect on scenes has dominated Ken s photography for many years now. He first started exhibiting in 1997 and has since done a number of very different commercial and personal projects and has exhibited many times both here in Singapore and in many parts of China. Understand the behaviour of light. Before taking a picture, ask yourself what is the light doing? Is it sidelight or backlight? Where is it coming from? And how does it affect you images?

10 Tips and Tricks for Landscape Photography Words and pictures By Darren Soh

do not regard myself as a typical landscape photographer in so far as I try to avoid photographing sunrises and sunsets or sprawling panoramas of nature. I believe the former to be overdone already and results would be highly unoriginal by any standards in any case. As for the latter, there are many nature/landscape photographers such as Jim Brandenburg that do a great job of that genre. I have no wish to compete. Rather, my landscapes tend to deal with interactions of human beings with nature, sometimes with quirky results, often at times a sense of irony. I am more interested in how people have shaped the landscape around them and I photograph both in the day and at night. Here are some tips to how I approach landscape photography as I know it. Some are practical, others more esoteric.

Use the right tripod, not just any tripod

It is impossible to overrate the importance of having the RIGHT tripod when you are out photographing landscapes. Contrary to popular belief, the heaviest and thus sturdiest beasts may not always be suitable for everyone. For the meek, carrying a 5 kilo tripod ON TOP of one s camera equipment is sure to guarantee one big photographer s backache. As a rule of thumb, 35mm equipment will not require as heavy a tripod as medium format gear. Sometimes, even the table top variant will do the job, because even the smallest tripod is better than no tripod.

Read the weather forecast

You don t want to trek out early with all your equipment only to run into severe weather that will not only dampen your spirits and enthusiasm but also soak that new nifty digital SLR of yours to the core. Surely not the best way to put the weatherproofing claims of camera manufacturers to the test. Always bring a small poncho in your camera bag for those unexpected monsoon downpours. Of course, having a vehicle to dash into for instant shelter never fails to help.

Pack essentials

The definition of essentials vary from location to location and from person to person. I always have a small stepladder in my car that doubles as a stool during my night landscape photography trips and triples as something I can use to stand on should I need to raise the camera on my tripod above eye level. Because my exposures last up to half an hour, having a comfortable seat is crucial. Insect repellent is also important if you re out photographing in the wilderness. The last thing you want is for pesky mosquitoes to irritate you into retreating. Never underestimate the companionship of a good book if you can afford the space in your bag and the load on your back.

Patience

Patience is one of the most underrated and possibly most useful virtues that a landscape photographer can possess. Be it waiting for the right light, the right cloud pattern, the right time of the day or simply waiting for time to pass as you make yet another half hour exposure like I do, patience keeps the photographer persistent and persistence almost always pays off in landscape photography.

Think abstract. be reductionist

When composing a landscape image, think OUT of the mould or mindset of photographing a landscape. Use colour and shapes rather than actual subject matter as compositional instruments. Puzzle your

viewer. Make him or her stop to ponder about what your image is actually depicting. The frequency of the question why didn t I see this (the scene photographed) in that way before? is a good gauge that you are approaching things differently and thus contributing in a real sense to the genre of good and diversified landscape photography.

Use depth of field carefully

Because of how the human eye works, controlling one s depth of field in any image (not restricted to landscapes only) serves as a tool to move attention to specific subjects within the frame while eliminating non-essential or distracting elements into a blur. Generous depth of field usually implies that the image has lots of detail that needs to be

appreciated in full and shallow depth of field is used by the photographer to decide for his or her viewer what to look at.

Wake early. linger late

I kid you not. The early bird catches the worm. I m not asking you to anticipate for sunrises and sunsets here but rather watch out for the effect that these times have on the lighting conditions at the place you are photographing in order to make the best use of the rich but limited available light that occurs at those times.

Pay careful attention to small details in your images such as a slightly skewed

horizon which is a big no no or the inclusion and exclusion of subjects at the edge of one s frame. Arranged carefully in the photographer s choice of composition, details help draw a viewer into the scene and leads him or her on a more experiential journey into the image.

About a sense of scale

Too many landscape images lack a sense of scale. Sure, everyone knows a tree is a tree but bear in mind that trees range from under a metre tall to over a hundred metres in height. Thus, other more recognizable objects need to be used in order to convey a sense of scale in one s images. Cars and human figures, not to mention dogs are great subjects for a photographer to include in order to relay a sense of scale.

Look out for the obvious if only in order to avoid it

The sure way to create an insipid photograph is to be conventional. To me, no experience is more painful than looking through an entire collection of pretty images. Sure, that sunset looks great, but the next time you get ready to release that shutter in front of a beautiful sunset, remind yourself that just about every photographer out there has a variant of that image you are about to make. Challenge yourself. Trying to make great memorable images during occasions of inclement weather is but one way you can do so. Trying to photograph a place familiar to you in a way you have never seen is another good exercise to try.

How did they do that? By the campfire These fire pictures were taken on an educational tour to Chiang Mai, Thailand, early this year with my Canon G3. I took them on a chilly evening during a campfire where the local villages were putting on a cultural show for us with dancers, singers and fire-swallowers performing. However I was more intrigued by the local villages that came along to watch the cultural exchange. They came in their daily attire, and their kids on tow. They set up a little campfire to warm themselves, as the temperature was sub-10 degree. One of them even brought along a chicken to grill over the fire, unfortunately that was not captured because I ran out of memory as this was the final night after spending 4 days in the nearby Camp Pratupha. The photos were taken handheld as I was travelling light without tripod on this trekking excursion (having to climb up and down steep hills for 4 hours to get to the camp site). The cool, dry and chilly atmosphere was so magical, I hope to make a return trip next year since I have now upgraded to a Nikon D70 and beefed up my storage and memory capacity. Black Lambo Talented local commercial photographer Andy Wee (www.andywee.com) only had 90 minutes to take this stunning shot of a Lamborghini Gallardo in the dealer s showroom. It took us 80 minutes to set up the lights (4 x 1500ws Bowens shooting through four 80x120cm soft boxes) and then we were left with just 10 minutes of shooting time , said Andy. I shot it on my Nikon D100 using a Sigma 12-24mm zoom @ f32 and 1/2ooth of a second.
