A month of

Highs and Lows What a month, August was truly a month of highs and lows. The photographic world sadly lost the photographer who defined Le Moment Decisif and in doing so guided future generations of photojournalists on what real photojournalism was all about. Henri Cartier-Bresson died aged 95 in l'Île-surSorgue in the rural Vaucluse region of southern France. In Paris, our correspondent Yian records his impressions of the sad event from the Paris Magnum office and offers up his views on HCB s shooting style on page 15. Out here in the tropics, the opening of the SARS 39 degrees exhibition was surely a defining moment in Singaporean photographic history. In an amazing desire to document a major piece of Singaporean history, four very talented young photojournalists were given unprecedented levels of access by local hospitals to victims of one of Singapore s darkest hours, the SARS epidemic of 2003. You gotta admire the courage of Maye-E Wong, Bryan van der Beck, Lance Lee, Ming and Ernest Goh who, while everyone else was backing away in fear from TTS and SGH hospitals at the height of the SARS epidemic, went that step further, right inside to the isolation wards to record what really went on behind the screens. I spent National Day down on the beaches with hundreds of other photographers capturing the last national day parade to be ever held at the National Stadium, Kallang in its present form. Many thanks to Helen at Shriro for loaning me a Hasselblad H1 and an Imacon digital back to capture the fireworks. It was a real blast. One of the good things to see was the community interest in digital photography. You should have heard the chatter when, after each firework display, people without cameras gathered to review the photographers work. Did you get a

During the month I was also on hand at the Celebrate the Seas/WetExpo in KL to see that Singaporean photographers are up there with the best of the world in underwater photography. At a great four day long event organised by Singaporean ex-pats Michael Aw and Chris Lee of Asian Geographic and Dive Magazine, there were many great photo exhibitions, film and doco screenings, and seminars on eco tourism and trades shows. Congratulations to Raymond Lim and Aw Seng Chye for their great work.

We took on the task this month of defining what is colour to a photographer, instead of getting bogged down with an indepth theory of colour exercise we took the stand that there are only four real colour situations that most photographers should be concerned about and on Page 21 we offer up our tips on how to generally improve the colour and intensity of your images. Hasselblad photographer Peter Chen gives us an insight into his world of colour photography as he prepares for the next Be there talk later this month at the SAFRA Bukit Merah site.

Edwin Koo
The Singaporean representative at the recent 2004 Young Photographers' Forum was Edwin Koo, a photojournalist with Streats Newspaper. Organised by World Press Photo and Asia Europe Foundation the forum saw 20 young photographers from Europe and Asia gather for a week in Vietnam to shoot photojournalism assignments documenting the urbanization of Hanoi.
My story changed in ways I didn t expect and I suppose I went there with some pre conceptions but it was fun playing cat and mouse with the management, said Edwin about his story. The problems started when we visited the lamp and vacuum flask factory I was supposed to document. It was a very old factory and in some ways very low tech, the management didn t want us to show the old technology which was where all the good photos were. However with the help of my fixer, after a couple of days she manage to find the oldest worker there and from that I made a different story about three generations of workers. This workshop taught me

that I had to relearn journalism. It s all about asking questions and talking with your subjects. I would recommend the forum to anyone wanting to be a serious photojournalist as it s a real eye opener to spend a week with photographers from different countries and see how they approach the same assignment visually. The photographers from Europe were all formally educated in photography while here in Asia we mostly learn on the job so it made for a range of different view points. Edwin was recommended to the forum which is an annual event, alternating between Europe and Asia each year, by his NTU Tutor Prof Sham
Tekwanie and really enjoyed the tutorage of John Stanmeyer (VII and TIME), Ruth Eichorn (GEO Germany) and Bullit Marquez from AP Manila on the forum.

Panasonic
launches five new models
As
part of a worldwide effort, which included events in Tokyo, New York and Berlin, Panasonic recently took the opportunity to bring a large number of journalists from all over Asia to the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa Resort on Sentosa, Singapore, to launch five new LUMIX digital camera models.
DMC-LC80
DMC-FX7
DMC-FX2 and DMC-FX7
Pretty bikini clad models paraded around the ballroom with the new cameras and Miami based international photographer Luis Castenada entertained all with his great photographic images and unbridled passion for photography. Panasonic revealed the new five megapixel DMC-FZ20, a development of their successful FZ-10, with an improved body design that features the new "Venus Engine II" image processor. It offers better performance, improved image stabilization and image quality including TIFF options and a new 9-point AF. The new 12x optical zoom, three megapixel DMC-FZ3 is the smaller stable mate to the new FZ20 with a compact body, lower resolution, fewer features and a lower price. The FZ3 also comes with a very fast lens offering F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. Like all the new cameras it comes
with Panasonic's MEGA OIS optical image stabilization as standard OEM. The DMC-FX2 and DMC-FX7 are four and five megapixel digital cameras that feature very large LCD monitors improved responsiveness (0.008 sec) and performance. Worth noting though is that despite their small size Panasonic has managed to squeeze the MEGA OIS optical image stabilization system into their three times zoom lens package. The last to be launched at this gala event was the new five megapixel DMC-LC80. Equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens it also boasts a very long battery life from the Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries. Add in the Mega Burst consecutive shooting rate of 2.7 frames a sec (max 9 images) and you have a great entry-level digital camera.

In 1815 the Indonesian volcano Mount Tambora erupted in one of the biggest geological events in human memory and the ash that ringed the earth was partly responsible for the infamous 1816 Year Without Summer . In August 2004 a European camera team spent four weeks shooting a major Discovery International documentary about the mountain and specialist aerial cinematographer Laurie K. Gilbert from Singapore, was hired to fly in an Air Bali helicopter and film 4500 feet down inside the caldera of the 10,000ft high volcano. While flying to and from the caldera each day, Laurie shot these pictures on his new 8 megapixal Konica Minolta Dimage A2. It worked fabulously, the ergonomics worked well because it uses external buttons instead of menus for critical functions and when I am hanging out on the helicopter skids at 10,000 feet it has to work instinctively. said Laurie.
Canon unveils EOS20D
Canon kicked off the PHOTOKINA product race with the unveiling of their successor to the EOS10D. With an expected US Price US$1600 they are saying that the 20D might be on sale by late September. Canon also announced two new lenses, an EF-S 10-22mm /f 3.5-4.5 and a EF-S 1785mm /f 4-5.6 IS which is reported to be sold bundled with 20D just like the 300D had a lens option. Tried and Tested
Macros galore By John Cosgrove
Getting up close and personal with bugs and butterflies was a new
experience for me but thanks to a couple of new members of Tamron s Super Performance (SP) lens family, and a healthy dose of motivation and guidance from Willy Foo, it turned out to be a very pleasurable experience.
The Tamron SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro and the Tamron SP AF180mm F/3.5 Di LD (IF) 1:1 Macro are by no means new players on the block. While the AF180 arrived last year, the 90mm macro first appeared in manual mode back in 1979. A rebuild several years ago saw it achieve AF and true 1:1 macro capability. Extremely well built and lightweight this lens has stayed on top of many photographers wish list for more than 20 years. Evolving into a new digital AF macro lens with Tamron s Di (Digitally Integrated) technology, it was designed to meet the more stringent needs of digital SLR cameras. The Di gives it improved resolution, compensation of ghosting and flare, minimized peripheral light fall-off and a reduction of chromatic aberrations, making it a great lens to use on my Nikon D100. The focal length of the 90mm was ideal for both macro and general photography work, the 35mm equivalent of 140mm meant it also worked well as a great portrait lens. Handling this very lightweight AF90 (just 405 grams) was a pleasure especially when I was trying to get into the face of a grasshopper. At this
stage I decided to change to the AF90 s big brother, the Tamron SP AF180mm F/3.5 Di LD (IF) 1:1 Macro. Now I could stand back and yet still get close to the little beastie. The main advantage the longer focal length macro lens gave me was its greater working distance. The AF180mm gives you a life-size (1:1) reproduction ratio with your subject 24 cms from the front of the lens, compared to just 9 cms with a 90mm macro lens. With more room to position flash units and less chance of casting a shadow on the subject it also keeps you away from easily frightened subjects. The unique push and pull action switch on the lens barrel to skip between manual or autofocus modes was a real bonus as both Willy and I found the manual mode much easier to use. Lighter and cheaper than their OEM competitors, Tamron have maintained their hold on the aftermarket macro lens market. Both new Tamron lenses were well built and displayed top draw finishes. They are designed to perform very well on either film or digital SLR s and both are available in mounts for Canon, Minolta (AF-D) and Nikon (AF-D) AF SLR s. They must surely be on top of your wish list for affordable macro lenses. Recommended Retail Price: Tamron AF90mm Di - S$ 695.00, Tamron AF180mm Di - S$ 1280.00 Contact: Tithes Marketing (S) Pte Ltd (65) 6743-0055.
Flat and proud of it
Flatbed negative scanners By John Cosgrove
The EPSON Perfection 4870 Photo was heralded as a breakthrough in consumer class scanners when it arrived earlier this year, with its revolutionary new hardware design and extensive software support that allowed users to achieve professional scanner level results. One of my main criteria for testing is always how quickly and easily can a unit be set up to produce high quality results. In the end it was a very easy job with the 4870, simply install the drivers and supporting software, plug in the USD2.0 or Firewire cable and power up. Designed with a Moving Carriage-Type Transparency Unit (TPU) for better resolution when scanning, the 4870 has a premium resolution of 4800 dpi and is capable of scanning a wide range of film formats. You can choose between 35mm strip film, 35 mm positive slides, 120/220 (6x12cm) medium format film and 4x5 format film. Take out the reflective cover and slot in the notched transparency adapter for scanning 35mm slides and negatives and you are in business. Select the professional mode on the Epson Smart Panel and then select preview. Once all the images from the four rows of 35mm stripfilm are previewed simply go through and mark which ones you want to scan and their output resolution. I selected A4 size at 300 dpi as I figured that s what I would generally output them to. The images produced were crisp and colorful thanks to the very capable Digital ICE technology, which helped in the detection and correction of defects in photos and films.
Like
many photographers I ve got boxes and boxes of old films and slides in storage. Now that I ve moved to a total digital environment I thought it was time to migrate some of my best images into digital format before the dreaded fungi destroyed them forever. Sadly I was too late for a large percentage, as an unexpected flood destroyed a lifetime s work stored back home, so all I have left now is a few hundred slides and prints. Dedicated negative scanners can be very expensive but if you go down to Cathay or Ruby these days, you will see that flat bed negative scanners are all the rage now. Normally flat bed scanners, which start in price from $99, were only usable for scanning in business cards, documents and prints. Now many manufacturers are starting to produce units that can scan both reflective and transparent artwork, a real bonus for photographers who want to preserve what s left of their film memories. Epson Singapore gladly loaned me a couple of scanners from opposite ends of the price spectrum to test for an upcoming article on film, but I was having so much fun I thought I would pass one of them onto you all now.

On reflective art it was superb, it was very easy to use to produce very good A4 sized reproductions. What impressed me the most about this great scanner was its speed. It didn t take that long to navigate its way through your image selections and output the images to a holding file. One other thing to note was that if you are still worried about getting great scans, check out the www.espon.com.sg site, which has a great tutorial, called the Epson film-scanning guide. Get accurate colour in difficult lighting conditions with the patented ExpoDisc. Varying levels of colour cast typically occur in digital photography and require compensation as part of the process to create a photograph with good color fidelity. Think of the ExpoDisc as a gray card within a lens cap. It s a neutral diffusion filter that gathers ambient light from 180 degrees and passively transmits 18% of it through to your cameras light meter. The resulting gray frame accurately represents the colour cast of the light in which you are working in. From this gray frame you can easily set your cameras custom preset white balance and get great accurate colour inside or out.

Through Kath s Lens
APPLY COLOUR! By Kath Cosgrove
I love black and white photographs; they are timeless, forgiving and have so much potential. I used to enjoy experimenting with different processing and printing techniques in the darkroom and now, although I lament the loss of my traditional darkroom, I now enjoy experimenting in my digital darkroom. One technique that has me spending hours in front of my computer is the age-old art of applying colour to black and white prints. I was first introduced to this intricate art by a good friend in Auckland whose first job back in the 1960 s was to colorize black and white photographs as colour film was expensive and not readily available in New Zealand during those days. She gave me several lessons and I spent many hours practicing and perfecting with photo oils, cotton wool, cotton buds, toothpicks and skewers, colour mixing palettes, photo pencils, turpentine and all sorts of paraphernalia. Traditionally, photo oils are applied using skewers or toothpicks wrapped in cotton wool and excess oil is removed with turpentine solutions. As you can imagine, this is a very messy, fumy and timeconsuming job but very rewarding if done correctly.
I like the effect to be as natural as possible and to enhance rather than distract. Although, I have found that darker skin tones suit bolder colours and can look simply stunning if balanced correctly.
I usually don t like to fully colour a portrait but prefer to use selective colouring to add drama or to focus attention on the subject. Usually just a piece of clothing or a bouquet of flowers is enough but you have to be careful that you don t draw attention away from your subject. Personally, I find that skin tone is very hard to emulate and can easily appear false if not done correctly so I prefer to leave these areas monotone and maybe add a little colour to the eyes or lips instead. When colouring in Photoshop, I start by converting my scanned black and white image to RGB. I then carefully select my target area with either the magic wand or the lasso tool, go to the select menu and pick Feather, choosing a radius of 10 pixels so that I don t get a hard obvious edge around the area I have selected. I then go to image/adjust/variations and add the colour that I would like my selection area to be. Variations allows me to keep all the detail in the selected area rather than blocking it out as would happen if I used paint brush or bucket. There are many ways in many books and this is just one of the methods that I use.
These days Photoshop, high resolution scanners and digital photography have given photographers another option that has made this job a lot easier, cleaner and just as rewarding.
Like every art form, it takes a lot of practice to perfect and even then, it can take several attempts to get an image to look the way you want it to, but in the end, the results are certainly worth the hard work.
Selecting an image that is suitable for colouring and deciding what effect you want to achieve is the first difficult step in the colouring process as not every monochrome image is suitable.
There are many methods of applying colour to a print whether by hand or by mouse, it is simply a matter of finding a technique or medium that you like and giving it a try.
For this technique to be effective, the area to be colorized needs to be predominantly grey in tone as black areas will not allow colours to show up very well and pure white often lacks the detail needed for the added colour to appear natural.
If you want to experience the joy of traditional hand colouring then I suggest you check out www.handcolor.com/studio/traditional/ handcoloring/preparation.htm as they have a great step-by-step guide to get you started.
When adding colour to portraits, I like to use subtle pastel shades rather then bright bold colours as

Staff at the Magnum office in Paris pour over the newspapers on the morning of August 5th, the day that news of Henri Cartier-Bresson s passing was released to the public. The entire noticeboard of the office was taken down and replaced with cuttings from newspapers such as Le Monde and Liberation, the latter of which dedicated 21 pages to the story, and pictures of and by him. The picture on the front page of Liberation (top left in the photo) of him was taken in New York City in 1935. The headline L instant decisif is French for the decisive moment.

even more loosely, this moment is decisive as I sit here typing this article at Magnum and commit to my decision to go see for myself firsthand the places I have always wanted to but knew nothing about (starting with the Balkans), to shoot up close (with only a 28mm lens), to see in colour, to connect with people, to learn about the world, to be present at the decisive moments to come. Josef Koudelka recounts stories of Henri Cartier-Bresson to the staff at the Paris office. Koudelka alleges that CartierBresson once called him an anarchist.
There
are many benefits to working at Magnum meeting famous photographers and more importantly, watching them work (for example, watching my mentor, six foot four Alex Majoli disappear while shooting in public), editing my portfolio with some of the world s best editors, and intangibles such as soaking up the atmosphere and incredible energy here. War photographer Thomas Dworzak (left) and Magnum staff help get the party going in commemoration of the life and death of Henri CartierBresson. The event is bittersweet, both a sad farewell and a celebration at the same time.

However the picture Gaumy selects looks exactly (to my unsophisticated eye) like the ones before and after it, whilst Cartier-Bresson has so many more different and diverse subjects that are not seen in his final printed output. And this to me is the most amazing thing about him, that he has seen so much; he has been physically present and up close at almost every defining event in the last century, at every decisive moment in history.
Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka raises a toast to the late Henri Cartier-Bresson, with staff at the Magnum office in Paris. Joining by conference call is his widow, fellow Magnum photographer Martine Franck. On the walls of the conference room behind Koudelka are two prints by fellow photographer Martin Parr.

The real privilege of working at Magnum, however, is the unrestricted access to le chambre froid or the cold room the vault where the negatives are stored. Recalling Erwitt s quote, I targeted 24 of his contact sheets first. Next on my list were my favourite photographer Jean Gaumy (very prolific, shoots many, many pictures of the same scene), my hero Robert Capa (the best contact sheets in terms of being well laid out with the development of the story and very easy to follow), and recently, Henri CartierBresson. For the latter, I had the additional aim of uncovering the secrets of le moment decisif , or the decisive moment.

About the photographer:
I
am a 23 year-old freelance photographer and artist who recently graduated from Communication Studies at NTU. I started taking pictures just 2 years ago and my first project was to create a coffee table book for someone who wanted memories and keepsakes of his home when he moved. I am now venturing into CD cover design and digital imagery for events and publishing. I believe that my camera helped shape how I look at things. As I work around my camera s capabilities and limitations, I have to constantly change the way I view and feel for pictures. My

confidence built up and now I feel I can work with various types of shooting technologies and environments. I realized I could take more interesting shots by exploring impossible locations (like being around a museum!). Photographs show not only style, but a person s character and taste, and also what he deems interesting in terms of value and the timelessness of an image. My friends have their distinctive style, but I like to move on to various styles and experiment with themes, techniques and subjects. I enjoy taking abstract pictures, architectural works, silhouettes, animals and creations of nature. As

much as I feel subjects are the essence of a photo, the composition is the lexicon of photography. Patterns are one of the ways to explore creativity and bring out the abstract in reality. There can be beauty in everything in life, if one slows down and takes a longer look and if one also takes time to feel and appreciate. Because photography is all about encasing the moment, if one can feel the moment then one shot is enough to create something that stays with you a lifetime. Industry Report
Oh to be there! From
the Athens Olympics site Nikon ATO, Daren Tan, sent us a couple of pictures showing what s on offer for the more than 1100 accredited photographers attending this great sporting adventure. Over 500 photographers were registered Nikon and NPS photographers and the biggest number of photographers sent by any single Asian news organization was 20 from the Xinhua News agency of China. The total number of AP photographers from their worldwide pool attending the games was approximately 40. Nikon had shipped close to 2 million euros worth of equipment to the games and judging by the boxes and bodies on show there was much to choose
from. Canon Europe also supported the Olympics with a major effort. Kodak who are the official games sponsors for printing, official film and photography gracefully invited both Nikon and Canon to join them and have provided a huge room within their Kodak depot to work from. Both Nikon and Kodak have developed a very close work relationship during this Athens games. said Daren The work spirit and motivation within the depot is enriching, because you have Nikon, Canon and Kodak there, and each company sends their best people

Early morning moon over Lake Te Anau
A South Island Road Trip By John and Kath Cosgrove
Zealand is an amazing place to visit as a photographer. Once you get past the occasional Hobbit, Elf or Orck running around the shrubbery of Middle-earth, you are truly in a photographer s paradise. On a recent road trip we drove from the top to the bottom of this land of the long white cloud. Driving is such a great way to see New Zealand as it allows you to stop when great picture apportunities leap out at you, just remember to indicate your intentions before you stop. We started our road trip in the beautiful wine growing district of Marlborough. The boutique wineries of the Wairau Plain are now home to the largest grape growing region in New Zealand. The region s soil types, abundant sunshine, long autumns and crisp, cool winters provide the right ingredients needed to produce world-class wines. One of the most popular ways to see the wineries is on a guided wine trail. Like many of the wineries and boutique breweries in this area the excellent Montana Brancott Winery offers full restaurant/café facilities on site so its an ideal opportunity to experience alfresco dining amongst the vines and shop for those excellent award winning wines like Montana s Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Méthode traditionnelle or Chardonnay before heading down State Highway 1 to Christchurch. An easy 1/2 day drive down past the whale watching area of Kaikoura to Christchurch offers many opportunities
The steamer Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu
to stop and take stunning mountain landscapes and even wildlife pictures as the fur seals are often visible from the roadside along this rugged coastline. Driving further down the east coast you can see that many of the buildings in the towns and cities have roots in old English architecture. One of the most well preserved historical sites is in the small town of Oamaru, 3.5 hours south of Christchurch, at the head of the mighty Waitaki river and dam system. Here they have worked hard to preserve the famous white limestone buildings. Heading inland towards Queenstown via the Lindis Pass, it s a good daylong drive with plenty of stops needed to get stunning reflection shots in the many hydro lakes enroute. It pays to start your day early in the South Island as the clean mountain air and still lakes are truly spectacular. Join up with State Highway No. 8 and drive thorough the mountains to the famous city of Queenstown on the banks of Lake Wakatipu where photo ops abound. In this region of national parks and tall mountains there is the natural beauty of Lake Te Anau and spectacular Milford Sound to be captured on film. Have fun whilst in Queenstown and Wanaka, as it s the nation s capital of adventure and excitement. Then when you have had enough adventure you can move on to explore the majestical grandeur of the West Coast between Haast and Westport. The Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers and the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are spectacular highlights. Watch out for the many natural history and landscape photo ops along this highway before you cut over the Southern Alps at Arthurs Pass to Christchurch.

Master of their Craft
I don t care what people say, this is how I interpret what I see. But people do like
what Peter Chen sees and with an extensive high profile clientel that comes to him direct for their commissioned works, Peter has established himself as one of Singapore s premier photo impressionist. With a client list that includes Westin Stamford, Zouk Disco, Asia Pacific Breweries and the Marriott and Fullerton hotels, Peter is largely selftaught but this quiet yet very sports minded 50 year old has always been a student of photography. I brought my first camera when I was only seven, it took a long time to save the money, firstly for the camera and then to pay for the ongoing film and processing. Undeterred that some members of his large family thought his photographic renditions of their home in Chinatown where a waste of time and money Peter nevertheless grew up in an arts minded family environment with brothers and sisters becoming fashion designers, piano teachers and his brother, Henri, is now a world famous painter. I suppose I was a very quiet person and I liked to express myself through photographry. I would shoot abstract things, trees in the backyard or what ever took my fancy. But a career in photography would have to wait as he undertook an electronic engineering degree, which led to a job at the GE and Toshiba factories. Photography still remained his first love and Peter supplemented his income with weddings and a lot of freelance work. He kept up his passion for abstract impressionistic photography by avidly reading any photography or art books and magazines he could get his hands on. With no mentors at this stage he shared his work with family members who again scolded him for wasting his time and money. At 30 years of age he took the plunge and went freelance. In the early days I had to combine commercial advertising and wedding work to make a living. I didn t like it much as it meant working to somebody else s vision and ideas. To work with an art director was like switching off my brain, robot work. About this time I also started to enter photo competitions but the local ones couldn t understand my vision and I didn t get very far so I looked overseas where they did seem to understood my vision and I was very successful at it.
)
20
About this time his work became noticed by noted Singaporean black and white teacher/photographer Yip Hoi Kee, who actively encouraged Peter to continue with his work. In the 90 s I became more recognized with shows and book work, people now started to hire me for my style and interpretation. Featuring in the authoritative reference book, Contemporary Photography, published by St James Press in 1995 it was indeed a rare honor for Peter. I really loved the work of Ernst Haas the way he handled colour in his images helped me a lot. To help Peter get motivated he has combined his electronics skills with a love for music Hi-fi to be exact. I love music, all types and genres, it helps me to get motivated and is by far my biggest inspiration. Peter Chen will talk about his photographic vision and photo impressionism at the third in the series of Be there talks presented by Shriro and Hasselblad at the SAFRA Bukit Merah on the 24th of September at 7.30pm. Five tips from peter 1: Be observant 2: Know your equipment well 3: Be original 4: Listen to critics 5: Listen to music

We started out with all the best intentions, our images where supposed to be bright
and colourful, after-all that s how we remember they looked like through the viewfinder but now, much later on the laptop LCD screen, our hard won images are flat and lifeless. In fact they require quite a bit of fiddling in Adobe Photoshop just to even make the grade of acceptable What did we do wrong? When we were walking along looking for that award winning photo, a combination or juxtaposition of shapes and colours caught our eye. Based on what visual criteria we have set our eyes to see (nature versus scenic), when these all fall into place they tell the brain that this would make a great image. The eye is always attracted to these seven elements: Colour, Shape, Shadow, Shine, Silhouette, Surface and Movement.
COLOUR
minus or plus
A combination of these elements is in every photo you take. In this MTV generation our eyes are constantly being bombarded with graphic images everywhere we look. Through the rods and cones in our eyes we can see a virtual rainbow of colours due to the activation of more than one kind of cone cell. Colour vision is additive (think RGB), with different wavelengths of light combining to form the millions of different hues detectable by a person working with normal colour vision. Our camera s media (film or digital) can only record certain levels of light so it s important to understand how to maximise our media to capture the best colour it can.
An understanding of the basics of colour theory is essential for every photographer but any lesson on colour can easily develop into a very boring dissertation on the theory of color and the path of a reflected wavelength of light. So we here at PHOTOi decided that that was enough highbrow speak and instead offered up our version of how to improve the colour in your images.
A simple guide to colour photography: There are four main types of colour that you will come across in photography. Most award winning photos will usually contain only one type of colour. Complimentary Colour: Two colours on opposite sides of the colour wheel, which when placed next to each other make both appear brighter. The complementary colour for red is green, for blue it's orange, and for yellow it's purple.
Monochromatic: A photograph taken in shades of only one colour. Not always the realm of black and white but where all the colours appear as the same tonal range, think soft lit landscapes, moody window shots, David Hamilton nudes etc. Usually seen as neutralcolours, such as browns and greys, very dramatic if used in the right context.
Spot Colour: A monochromatic picture can be turned into a masterpiece simply by adding a spot colour. Adding a red or yellow spot colour lifts the picture dramatically.
21
)
Contrasting Colour: Two colours that when placed together cause one to dominate the other. The contrasting colour for red is blue and for yellow it's green.

Lessons
Colour saturation Film speed: The slower the ISO the better the colour depth. Try to shoot at the lowest available ISO setting to increase the levels of colour in your images. The higher the ISO the fewer colours captured and the more contrasty your image will be. Plus or minus compensation: Your digital camera's inbuilt metering system can be affected by many factors and will sometimes determine the wrong exposure value needed to produce an image, giving you flat, light or dark pictures. There are many ways to fix this and increase the saturation of your images. The quick answer is to adjust the "EV Compensation" feature found on all prosumer and professional cameras, which allow you adjustments from -2.0 EV to +2.0 EV. It s important to understand that in exposure compensation positive values increase the brightness of the image, while negative values darker it. When you become more familiar with your camera's metering system, you can determine the amount of EV compensation long before you start shooting.
compensation on your priority mode (A, S or P) to increase the saturation, shoot at the lowest ISO possible, select the colour mode which suits your purposes either Adobe RGB or sRGB. Some digital shooters capture every thing in RAW mode so that they can control it later in post-production. But in the end it s how you shoot that determines the reproduction of the colour in your image.
Colour Escape Routes;
OUT
IN
As a rule I generally set my EV at 0.3 to increase the colour saturation of my images but some situations call for a more refined process so always check your camera s LCD monitor and when in doubt try bracketing your exposures. Use the cameras inbuilt exposure bracket mode or manually change the settings. To create impact in your photos look for bold hues. Car magazines learned a long time ago that cover shots with red sports-cars sell more copies, home decor magazines use soothing blues, vibrant yellows and luscious greens to promote their products, while fashion magazines use a combination of monochromatic or strong contrasting colours to sell their wares. KIS - Simplicity is always the key to a great image. Minimize the number of colours for more impact, as a photograph should have only one main subject and one main color. Look for just one of the three primary colours: red, blue, or yellow and balance them with their respective complementary colours, i.e. red with green, blue with orange, and yellow with purple. For the best images always use films that produce very saturated images like Fuji s Velvia/Provia and Kodak's Ektachrome E100S slide film. It should be noted that now both film manufacturers are starting to release colour negative films that have been developed to mimic the very saturated images of slide film, a bonus for all film shooters. On the digital front there are many ways to improve the colour of your captured image. Select a minus

Just like the white escape routes in a black and white photographs, dominant colour escape routes ask the viewer to leave our picture before we can even get our message across. Always watch out for contrasting colours that take the viewers eye away from the intended message. Is that red bucket in the corner of the frame really necessary?
