Congratulations to an extremely talented photographer, Mark Aviles, for winning the inaugural PHOTOI /NIKON /Cathay Photo Best Photographer in Singapore competition and many thanks to both the sponsors and the hundreds of photographers who took the time to contribute to the success of this our first ever competition. Look out in the upcoming issues of PHOTOi for an even bigger and better competition with monthly prizes. Well 2004 is nearly at an end and if you remember last December I came up with a set of ideas and concepts that I thought might happen in 04. Some did, others where too far fetched and some are still on the back burner but wasn t it a boomer year for photography in Singapore. If we were in a position to give out awards for effort or innovation in the past 12 months my award wish list would look something like this. The Hardest working photo printer man award would go to Chris Yap, for being everybody s ace exhibition printer. The Tireless supporter of young photographers award goes to Tay Kay Chin, for pushing many young Singaporean photographers to look closer at the world around them. The Innovative exhibitor award goes to Tan Ngiap Heng, for shooting and showing off everything from army guards to nude

Ah... i see it now... PHOTOi magazine goes regional, Nikon releases the D2H Series II an eight frames a sec @ eight megapixel model, Canon heats up the entry level DSLR range with an updated EOS300D called the REBAL XT, a Chinese built medium format CCD back sparks a price war in that marketplace, CF cards come down massively in price and go up in size beyond 15 gigabytes and finally lens image stabilisation capabilities become standard on all cameras.

PhotoAid 3D at TPG A number of local photographers recently contributed to the Photographers Gallery s latest innovative exhibition, PhotoAid: Perspective in 3D. Using both 3D hardware and software Jeff Loo and this team there constructed a number of images from photographers who had the common goal of wanting to do their part for local charities. Selected photography works where exhibited in 3D and viewers needed special 3D glasses to experience the images. The sales and proceeds from this exhibition are going towards the Straits Times Pocket Money fund to benefit needy children. Support for the project also came from Michelangelo s Restaurant. Photographers who took part are John Cosgrove, Lance Lee, Charles Lim, Ernest Goh, Low Soon Leong, Jeff Loo, Fabian So and Kian Peng.
BUD exhibition
Students from the various photography short courses conducted at Objectifs during the past six months held their Bud exhibition recently. On show were works covering many different genres of photography and for most students this was their first ever public showing of their works.
While you were Sleeping PHOTOi contributor and talented young photographer Darren Soh proudly showed off his latest book project to friends and fellow photographers at a Hasselblad event recently. Only 500 copies of the large square formatted coffee table photo book titled While you were sleeping are being printed and all of the landscape images were shot late at night in Singapore during the past several years. Readers saw some examples of these excellent photos in the recent October issue of PHOTOi where Darren produced a lesson feature on the art of landscape photography. Darren meanwhile has opened the inaugural exhibition at the new Sail Art Gallery, a pioneering initiative by City Developments Ltd, that aims to contribute to the development of local art by providing a free platform for artists to showcase their talents.
Sign of the times If a young photographer approaches you in the street and asks you to hold a sign with your name and dreams on it and stand for a photo, don t scold him or tell him to leave just smile and pose for this unique social documentary photo project. Charles Lim Thow Teck, a DTP artist, has been spending his free time during the past year walking all over Singapore getting passer-by s to write their dreams on a chalkboard and pose for his camera. Some people have scolded me, others tell me to leave but many more do pose for me, said Charles. When I get 1000 images I will have a mini exhibition but I plan to keep on doing this for the rest of my life.
Darren s photographs capture the transformation of Singapore's landscape and skyline into extraordinary scenes, exposes the philosophy that behind simple ordinary day-to-day activities and places are untold stories. They are portrayed in a creative manner through unique photographic angles and treatments. The Sail Art Gallery is located within the show suites for The Sail @ Marina Bay. Access can be gained by the slip road between NTUC Centre and Neptune Theatre (Overseas Union House) or walking from Clifford Pier behind Overseas Union House. Visitors using the MRT can stop at Raffles Place and cross over the Change Alley Bridge to Clifford Pier. Parking is also available at Overseas Union House (accessible from Esplanade Drive only).
Planet Games For all those out there who can remember time spent in their youth at arcades playing space invaders and Atari then head off down to the Singapore Science Center for the Planet Games interactive exhibition. In amongst all the old and new video gaming machines PHOTOi s sister publication Game Axis, Singapore s premier gaming magazine, is proudly hosting a display with the latest online LAN gaming facilities. Plant Games will be on show till February 2005, so check it out. There are old video games, PC and current Xbox games and some very advanced 3D future gaming machines all on show and yes you can sit there and play to your hearts content, no tokens required.
Stick No Bill! A Chief Purser with Air France, Herve Conil recently opened his very imaginative and colourful Stick No Bill! photography exhibition at the SG Private Banking Gallery in the Alliance Francaise building. Images of wall graffiti and ripped signs, faded picture boards and hoardings where taken on a Minolta X700 in many different locations around the world. I usually work with a macro lens and I don t alter anything, I just shoot what takes my eye said Herve. Herve s work has been seen in many places both here in Singapore and worldwide including department stores and galleries.

The power to perform Silicon Power of Taiwan have released in Singapore a new range of very attractively priced flash data storage devices that include CF, SD, MMC and SMC Cards. Top of their line are the new 45x speed Ultima 1 Gigabyte Compact Flash (CF) and Secure Data (SD) cards. The Ultima CF cards range in size from 128 Mgb all the way up to 2 GB while the Ultima SD card series starts at 64Mgb and tops out at 1 GB. On a recent test with a Nikon D2X it showed that for users of the latest crop of high performance digital cameras you really do need safe and fast, large capacity storage devices that offer fast snapshot and recovery times. At 45x these new cards are usable on all the top models including the new Canon EOS1DMkII which allows you to use both CF and SD type cards simultaneous. The new Ultima SD and CF cards are now available in Singapore.
Pre-Order the E300 at Sitex The highly affordable Olympus E-300 Digital SLR will be available for pre-orders at SITEX 2004 at the recommended retail price of S$1,699 (inclusive of GST). Unveiled at the recent Photokina show held in Germany, the new Olympus E-300 redefines digital SLRs and rides on the success of the multi-award winning FourThirds System developed for the E1. The E300 kit packs dust protection and an 8megapixel imaging sensor into an innovative compact, low-profile "flat-top" body for world-class image quality. The new body shape which is a much leaner and more unconventional shape than when compared to other SLRs. Its reduced dimensions are the result of replacing the penta prism with a TTL Optical Porro Finder. With a full combination of photographic functions available from its user-friendly menu and controls, the Olympus E-300 allows serious amateurs to fully exercise their creative expressions in their photography. It is also compatible with a vast range of system accessories, including all Olympus E-System high-precision lenses. There are currently nine interchangeable lenses available for this model, and all are based on the FourThirds Standard and feature the nearly telecentric construction required by digital image sensors for perfect colour, clarity and brightness. Such lens draws maximum performance from the cameraÂ’s Full Frame Transfer CCD (FFT CCD) and ensures the maximum amount of image data is recorded. It is expected to be commercially available here in Singapore in the second-half of December 2004. The E300 kit includes: E-300 Body, USB Cable, Video Cable, Li-Ion Battery Pack (BLM-1), Li-Ion Battery Charger (BCM-2), Shoulder Strap, OLYMPUS Master Editing Software, CD-ROM, Manuals, Warranty card, and System chart.

Faces of Fame A perspective by Greg Gorman
Words and photos by John Cosgrove Courtesy of EPSON Singapore. Nearly 600 people packed into the Suntec City Convention Centre Theatre to listen to one of the world s most famous portrait photographers. American celebrity photographer and Epson Stylus Pro Greg Gorman kept the large crowd entertained with whimsical observations on his colourful life as a photographer, witty anecdotes on shooting stars and starlets, in-depth technical tips and tricks on how to make your digital images really stand out and then kept up a seemingly endless procession of really stunning black and white and colour portraits. Greg showcased his unique and much sought after photographic style with three live shoots using local fashion models and personalities. Then he walked us through his digital workflow to its conclusion with large 16 x20 images output on an Epson Stylus Pro 4000. Some tips from Greg for photographers: Talk to your models. Gain their trust. Treat them with respect but don t let them walk all over you Be positive but not pushy. Have good music and good food on hand. Always work in RAW mode to gain full control of your images. For guys light them more dramatically. For girls think either colour or B&W. Have a vision about what you want to achieve and be vocal about it.

Photo Events
Action Asia Words and photos by John Cosgrove
The recent Action Asia Challenge Singapore provided us with a variety of action
sports to photograph, all within the confines of the city. You have to take your hat off to Michael Maddess and his team for providing us with the opportunity to see so many top multi-sport athletes competing in an event with very good public access to the various disciplines. For nearly five hours top teams ran, cycled, swam, rock climbed, rappelled and kayaked nearly 60 km before spectacularly zip lining down from the top of the Esplanade in front of hundreds of onlookers and tourists. The trick to getting great pictures at this sort of event is to plan your coverage well and take time to study what is happening, donÂ’t race from event to event chasing leaders but set yourself up to maximize a particular location with good shutter speeds and clean back grounds e.g.: at the Bukit Timah nature reserve you could photograph, MTB racing, rock climbing, abseiling, swimming, cargo net scaling and running all within a couple of hundred metres, while at the Esplanade there was kayaking, running, mtb, abseiling, swimming and zip lining.
Sevens galore Words and photos by John Cosgrove
The recent 57th annual Singapore Cricket ClubÂ’s International Rugby Sevens was a real bonus for photographers. This event is always very well organised with great rugby action in short seven minute long halves. The organizing committee at SCC under Stephen McCullough has maintained the high standards of organization, entertainment and free public access that have become synonymous with this event in recent years. Teams of seven players race against the clock to score points in an abridged version of the international game of rugby. This year top club teams from ten countries attended making endless opportunities for high-class rugby action, speed and movement, expression and drama photographs. Not only were there good access points to shoot great pictures from, but behind the main field there was also a mini-rugby tournament being held for children, with many local schools taking part and this also gave us plenty of great photo ops. Mark your calendar/ diary for this event next year.

Wakeboarding Tommy Loh caught some good action at the recent Wake Board World Cup - Singapore Leg, held at the Bedok Reservoir. Shooting from the bank Tommy was using a Canon 10D with a Canon EF 100-400mm lens attached. Though the blazing sun was scorching down on many of the photo enthusiasts in attendance he said it was well worth it. I was standing close to the billboards at the reservoir. A good distance to get the action shots while the wake boarders rode past the crowd. You should've been there. Tommy Low, www.lobinhoot.com, tommy@lobinhoot.com

The
Tried and Tested
X
factor
Words and photos by john Cosgrove
High or low speed? Six or Twelve megapixels? It s your choice, you choose with the new NIKON D2X. That a D2H mate? came the polite enquiry from an interested bystander, as I shot off another 8 frames in rapid succession. No I replied with a smile, It s an X. The heightened look of interest on his face was followed briefly by one of envy for in my hands was Nikons latest pro camera, the 12.4 megapixel D2X. A junior rugby match at the Padang was an excellent venue to test run the D2X. High-speed action with fast paced runners, flying tackles and a good mix of vertical and horizontal photo opportunities. Now that s where the D2X really shone. In the past vertical focus on some models had been okay, but with a minor tendency to sometimes hunt, now the autofocus is crisp and tight, right on the money in either vertical and horizontal shooting modes. Following a young winger up a side line on his try scoring break the D2X kept it all nice and sharp. Now comes the hard part - which speed do I choose? With the X you get the choice of five frames a second on the full 12.4 megapixels or a very rapid eight frames a second at 6.8 megapixels under the new high speedcropping mode. Selecting the high-speed cropping mode from the menu on the large and bright 2-inch LCD meant that I really had to concentrate through the viewfinder, as you have to keep the images within the edge-bounding box which highlights when you depress the shutter. Mind you there wasn t much loss of view space as the edges are pretty close to the full frame anyway. After cutting off a few heads I got the idea on how to use it properly, simply think of it as the X giving me a 600mm Field of View from my 300 mm lens. Ah ha no more lost heads. There is always the desire to shoot large when you own an X, after all, that s why you would invest in such an extremely capable pro level camera, and at five frames a second what more do you need? After all, are you a photographer who plans their pictures and captures peak action images or simply a shooter who is shot gunning the action in the faint hope that something usable is captured? (Think about it, which one should you be?) Nearby were several of the latter who, after many frustrating episodes of long image deletion exercises with their thumbs, started to follow my lead and plan their shots. But it s still kinda cool to be able to blast off eight frames a second occasionally. Inside the new lightweight and easy-to-handle body cast in the same mould as the D2H, things have started to really hum. The new Nikon DX-format image sensor delivers

improved image quality, which is achieved with a new CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) image sensor hosting an effective pixel-count of 12.4 megapixels. A new 4-channel output method which speeds up the transferring image data from the image sensor to your memory card allows the D2X to capture 12.4 megapixel JPEG images or RAW image at a rate of 5 frames per second in continuous shooting mode or an even higher continuous shooting rate of up to 8 frames per second when using the new High Speed Cropped function which crops the centre of an image at a 6.8 megapixel resolution. In addition to the new dual-area image sensor, all image-processing functions have been either newly developed or refined. Image tone characteristics have been further improved with both analog and digital processing for optimum colour distribution. Moreover, the enhanced accuracy of digital processing in the ASIC provides for much smoother shading in gradual colour changes. The D2X also supports the sYCC colour profile found in many of the latest ink jet printers. This allows the X to reproduce a wider range of colours when printing JPEG data than the conventional colour profile. The colour modes have been further tweaked to give you a total of five selections. In Nikon s traditional colour space Modes 1 (bright and punchy images) and 3 (enhanced landscape) you now have the choice of selecting either sRGB or Adobe RGB colour spaces. The combination of image-processing technologies and 3D-Color Matrix Metering II with improved new algorithms found in the D2X makes it possible to capture great 12.4megapixel images that will give you such great BIG files, with more than enough detail, colour and smooth tonal ranges to wet the appetite of the hardiest digital shooter, but it also means you have to invest in larger faster cards. Time to buy shares in Sandisk. The Nikon Multi-CAM2000 11-area AF sensor easily handles all the focusing duties while the ambient light sensor does a great job of improving the white-balance precision. On the back you will notice that when you are reviewing the images on that very large and bright LCD screen you can now check out the RGB Histogram.Ê It is also possible to display channel-specific ([R] red, [G] green or [B] blue) histograms for immediate and detailed image verification. Look closer and now you have the ability to create multiple exposures composed of two to ten images. Creative in-camera effects such as Image Overlay and Multiple Exposure are part of a new drive by Nikon to promote creativity from users. The new Multiple Exposure function creates a single image from up to 10 exposures.
As exposure for each image can be adjusted to prevent over-exposure, exposure for the final multiple-exposure image will be optimum. The Image Overlay function merges selected RAW (NEF) files already stored on the CF card to create a new image file within the camera. Overall: With the new D2X, Nikon is setting very high standards of colour and functionality for users wanting something special like the X factor from their pro level cameras and after a long wait I m sure they will find a very appreciative market eagerly awaiting its imminent release. Many thanks to Nikon for letting me sample a true beauty of a camera and to the SCC for the great rugby action and Willy Foo for the food and water.

Yain on the Move
Getting Mugged After The Toy Show Words and photos by Yian
I
went to the Great Toy Show in Germany. For those of you unfamiliar with my made-up term, this refers to the biennial Photokina convention the biggest in the world. Everything you could want in a photographer s toy show was there. Chimping on a Leica (RD), uber-fast glass to play with (Canon s entire range, including the 1200mm), Leica-a-la-carte (I m not making this term up). The latter refers to the customisable Leica, any colour, finish, winder, viewfinder, etc. you could want in your own personalised version. They had models galore, and fashion photographers showing us the latest in cameras and lighting systems to shoot them. There was a car run by two AA batteries (Panasonic), which went all of three meters on a stage with a small girl driving. There were motorcycles, mini s and F1 cars for you to get your picture taken in. (Add your own Photoshop motion blur). And they had many exhibitions, including the best exhibition of VII photographers I have ever seen. They built an entire black, dark maze of passageways with windows onto the photos, which were set back from the main passageway. This added very well to the eeriness of the subject matter. There were also an exhibition of Magnum s Elliot Erwitt s Hands , and his M3, well brassed, in a glass case. (Attached to a 50mm). Celebrity photographs by Anton Corbijn, fashion photographers, conceptual, and finally documentary photographers. Anyway, I should admit that there s a reason I mentioned the exhibitions last. That was the order I saw them in. Also, I can t fail to mention the German beer and hospitality. Wandering off by myself into the old town away from fellow

camera geeks, I meet kind Germans who took me into their groups and introduced me to the local beers and foods. Drinking beer back in Paris has never been the same. The next week was spent with Gary Knight (VII) and his wife, Fiona Turner and their two kids, and Jerome Delay (AP) at Gary s house. The absolute best thing of the week was his wife s cooking. Now imagine my surprise when I found out that she has won five Emmy s (producing documentaries for NBC and ABC). The two of them met in Bosnia or somewhere. Classic war journalist love-story. To cut a long story short, Gary and Jerome tag-teamed me, and beat out of me any remaining desire to go to the Sudan. James Nachtwey (VII) had just spent three and a half weeks there, and came back with the best photos of any photographer so far of the refugees, but just about the worst in his career. (Very roughly paraphrasing Gary s opinion). I concur. It was suggested that as a young, beginning photographer, I go somewhere else where I could plant myself for six months, since my most valuable resource at this point is time. Somewhere that has the basic infrastructure to support a photographer without a big magazine s backing. Somewhere like. Oh. Say. Gaza. Jerome has been based in Jerusalem for quite a few years, and his girlfriend just completed a month-long reportage in Gaza. (Which was just exhibited in Paris, by the way). We ll see The next week of my adventure was spent in another workshop in Bilbao, this time organised loosely with
Magnum. It was supposed to be with Alex Majoli, but he was stuck in Latvia (good excuse for missing a workshop, I suppose), and filled in by Eli Reed instead. Best value workshop of all time. 70 Euros for a week. My first night there, the receptionist at my hotel gave me a map, crossed out a section of town and forbade me to go there, telling me about the dangers of drugs and pimps. Of course, the way I see it was that he has just given me a treasure map to the most interesting stories with which to impress Eli, and I fully intended to go there the next morning. That evening, while bar hopping with a girl from Barcelona, we inevitably, unintentionally wandered into that area, and witnessed a street fight . As we crossed the road to avoid it, a drunk youth came up to reassure us that everything was all right. Next thing I knew, my wallet had been picked as he accidentally jostled me, and as I was unwilling to leave the girl who was by my side to give chase (good reason, right?); I shouted loudly, but fairly impotently at him, cussing more at my own carelessness at being duped. Surprisingly, he droped my wallet and ran off. I found out soon enough that it was not because of my great (non-existent) Spanish cussing skills, but that four policemen appeared out of nowhere and jumped on him. Declining to press charges, we move on for the evening. Two days later, I finally pick up the courage to confront my fears, and against everybody s advice, head back to the area to document it. It was probably the scariest thing I have ever taken photos of, and the most fearful situation that I have ever put myself in.

WARNING
Scrapbooking can be addictive! Words and photos by Kath Cosgrove
Here s an idea that will not only make a wonderful
Christmas present for someone special but will also turn a few good photographs into a precious piece of art that will be treasured for life! Scrapbooking is the art of combining photographs, words (journaling), memorabilia and souvenirs within an album to create a lasting visual memory that is so much more than just a photo album. It is a memory album, says Penny Lam, proprietor of Art Frenzy, Anchorpoint. It preserves your memories in the form of journaling and memorabilia. You can save those movie ticket stubs; love letters and your children s drawings right there on the same page as your photos, rather than tuck them away in a box inside the closet. Preserving these memories is perhaps the most important part of Scrapbooking and therefore only acid free and lignin free albums, glues, background papers and materials should be used. Acid and lignin cause photos to fade and deteriorate faster and paper to turn yellow and crumble. Good acid free Scrapbooking albums with plastic sleeve page protector s cost between $20 and $120 depending on the size and style and are well worth the investment. Store your precious album in an upright position so that the pages are not squashed together and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The great thing about Scrapbooking is that anyone who is able to cut and paste can do it! Start With:
k An acid and lignin free album. k Refill pages for your album. k Coloured cardstock and decorative papers. k Photo adhesives. k Scissors. k A fine tip Scrapbooking Pen. k Photographs and related memorabilia. Pick a set of four or five photographs that revolve around a certain theme or topic such as a trip to Sentosa. Assemble any entry tickets or other associated

memorabilia. Pick one photo to be the main focus of your page and without using any glue, arrange and rearrange your page until you are happy with your design. Cropping an occasional picture into a circle or oval can add interest to your page just as decorative papers can highlight certain areas and matting a photo can help draw your attention to it. Once you are happy with your design, glue everything into position. Hand write little notes on each page to help your photos tell the whole story and to remember any special moments or thoughts during the day. Above all, remember - this is your album express yourself!
IDEAS:
Get ideas from magazines, websites etc and then make yours uniquely you!
The possibilities are endless
Babies Birth: create a page or two that includes photos of your baby surrounded by babies hospital tag, measuring tape showing your babies length at birth, congratulation cards, babies first booties, mittens, babies hand and foot prints, your own personal sentiments etc. Why not create a new page each month to document babies first year! Travel Diary: combine photographs, boarding passes, receipts, luggage tags, name cards, maps, entrance tickets, personal notes etc to help you remember the best bits of your holiday.
Tips:
SCRAPBOOKING SUPPLIES:
Use coloured cardstock and decorative papers for: Background colour, mats around photos, borders around pages, for cutouts and to add interest to a page. If you wish to add newspaper clippings or other documents to the album either make copies onto acid free paper and use these instead or spray the originals with a special archival spray such as Krylon Make it Acid Free Spray $39.90 from Tango Mango Bookshop.

Life can be beautiful
About the photographer:
Danny Toh I was fascinated by the lights when I happened to be in Little India the other night, not so much from the normal point of view but on how these lights affect the surfaces of the environment that surrounds us. The masterful and abstract paintings created by human activities within our community are all spontaneously and dynamically executed, almost as if by some unseen forces. Life can be beautiful if we are able to look beyond the superficial aspects of our materialistic society at large. All the pictures in this series were taken within the vicinity of Farrer park MRT Station exit G. dannytoh@acs.sch.edu.sg
Whether it be nature, kids, sports or whatever, please send us a selection of your best images of subjects based around a common theme so that we can show off your work to the world. To support all our readers who are out there shooting up a storm each month for the readers galleria section, PHOTOi with the kind support of THE CAMERA WORKSHOP at 3 Coleman Street, #01-31, Peninsula Hotel Shopping Centre, Singapore, are giving away the latest SAFROTTO backpack camera bag worth $240.00 each month to the photographer whose work makes the grade for Readers Galleria, so keep those submissions rolling in.

Lets get creative with PhotoShop Elements 3.0 Printing a combined photo package
To many of us our inkjet printer just prints images out in one or two sizes, either A4 or A5 (half an A4). But when used in conjunction with an image management / manipulation program like PhotoShop Elements 3.0 you can print your images out in many different options. If you are a Windows user then this picture package under the heading of Creativity extends to many other components including calendars, books and photo albums. For Mac users we have to be contented with only a couple of options.
In Photoshop Elements 3.0 for Mac we can choose to print single or multiple copies of an image on a page or print multiple copies of several images on the same page when using a template. There are templates with options for two 5 x7 images on a page all the way up to twenty 2 x2 images. Each image can be the one you have already worked on or you can modify the template to handle multiple images. This is a much better option than constructing a new document and positioning the images on a page manually. Step one
Step three
Decide which photos you want to include on the page then under file go all the way down to Picture Package.
To add other pictures to the layout you have chosen, simply click on the box where you want them to go and source the images from your files. Step six Editing the template is just as easy, should you decide not to use the supplied template just select the Edit Layout button (lower right) and then by selecting each box you can construct your own template, with say extra space between images or different combinations.
Step two
Step four
a: Choose the source file (if you have one opened already PSE will select the top most image) then b: choose the layout options. Make sure you have the right resolution. a:
Decide here if you want to add content in the form of File Names, Copyright, Descriptions and Credits etc. This content is found on your orginal document under file>fileinfo.
Step seven Select file>print with preview and print in your usual manner, making sure that you select the correct media and colour management options.
Step five The next step is very simple - select OK then PSE will start to build your template as a Photoshop document.
Points to note: if you crop the image before selecting it to be included in the picture package then it may not fit in the way you want it to go, if printing multiple images on one page organise them first into a work folder.
