COMMODORE’S REPORT Phil Warwick Commodore As I write this report we have just returned from our annual pilgrimage to Rottnest Island for the Christmas and New Year break. During our relaxing time it provided me with the opportunity to reflect on the last few months since my transition into the Commodore role, the Club and the year ahead. Since becoming Commodore I have been fortunate enough to represent our Club at many of our Kindred Club’s Summer Season Opening Days. I can state without hesitation that we at South of Perth have certainly established ourselves as one of the most modern and professionally run Clubs, one we should all be extremely proud of. It has been most enjoyable and extremely gratifying to have a more direct link to our professional staff and the many volunteers who make up the core operational nucleus of our great Club. The culture and camaraderie that exists between our members of the various sections is very gratifying and clearly demonstrated by the recent support of the pre-Christmas events. These included a very successful Membership Open Day, Children’s Christmas Party, Hello Summer event and

HOUSE REPORT David Barton Vice Commodore Happy New Year to you all The 2017-18 SoPYC year is now into its fourth month and has seen some incredible activity around the Club both on and off the water. Our achievements on the water have been incredible and our thanks must go out to the dedicated staff and army of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of our many and varied programs. The Bosun's staff have worked tirelessly to organise the new slip area that is now working very efficiently and providing us with the best maintenance area on the river with competent and well-trained operators. This combined with a revamped Coffee Point Marine makes maintenance at SoPYC very easy. The Functions Committee and staff have done a marvellous job over the period utilising the Promenade and the Beachside Marquees for some incredible functions. The Hello Summer and Melbourne Cup Garden Party were a great success, along with our Christmas activities. Congratulations to Fiona Whife and her functions staff and volunteers on the incredible number of functions they have

the infamous Jetty 6 Christmas Party. It was wonderful to see these functions being so well supported by our members, their families and friends. I am extremely pleased to announce that our under 18 year old sailors competing in the Youth World Sailing Championships in Sanya, China achieved fantastic results. We should all be very proud of their individual performances. All our sailors showed that we fly our burgee high internationally and nationally with continued success at the 2018 Nationals and Australian Youth Championships. 2018 is shaping up to be another great year for Western Australia, with our Club sailing and many State and National Titles being held on Perth waters, providing a home town advantage for our sailors. SoPYC are fortunate to be hosting the Viper Worlds in February and the Laser and Flying 15 States Titles in March. I am very confident that we will figure prominently in these results. I would personally like to thank our many dedicated staff members, volunteers and members for their ongoing support and wish everybody a safe, healthy and prosperous 2018.

See you on the water. Phil Warwick Commodore

been able to cater for, it is simply amazing what our staff with good volunteer support can accomplish. The more I travel around other clubs here in Australia and overseas it never ceases to amaze me how lucky I am to be a member of South of Perth Yacht Club. We truly are a family club and the difference is outstanding especially when it comes to atmosphere which I believe we owe to our one club philosophy and our volunteering that sees all sections helping out each other, something we do not see in many clubs. There is no limit to the army of volunteers needed to maintain the activity that is required to maintain the high standard of activity that members enjoy. No matter what membership classification you hold , if you have time and can contribute, your efforts will always be appreciated and will greatly assist in the future growth and development of our unique club. There has been much debate in recent times regarding dress standards and it is interesting that our dress codes are no different to most clubs I have visited. When I enquire they inform me that their clubs want to retain a comfortable high standard for everyone’s enjoyment. So as we continue the debate please be aware of the consequences if we lower our standards too much. All in all a good start to the yacht club year. No matter what your chosen water activity may be, enjoy it to the fullest and stay safe. David Barton Vice Commodore

REGATTA MATTERS having his wife and four children back home in Como, having returned from Malaysia. Ralph Newton Rear Commodore Regatta At the time of writing our Club is having a well-deserved break from regular sailing commitments, but there is plenty of sailing action around Australia where our members are heavily involved and doing so well. South of Perth Yacht Club Head Coach Tessa Parkinson has devoted her whole Christmas and new year season to being on-site in Queensland to help and support about 20 of our Optimist, Laser, 29er and Nacra 15 sailors perform at their best at RQYS in Brisbane. Tessa is providing coaching and support for our club members, plus looking after all the logistics involved in sending two of our coach/support boats and competitor’s boats to and from Brisbane. Obviously no holiday for Tessa, so well done and thanks. For full results of our major National events, refer to R/C Centreboard Mat Selby's report. Closer to home a couple of the hardy H28’s and sports boats made the effort to participate at TCYC's Cockburn Sound Regatta at Rockingham posting great results and as always the regatta is a great in-betweener and a chance to go out of the Swan River to compete in the crystal clear waters of Rockingham. The start of the summer season have seen club competition Saturday fleets of up to 60 boats and Wednesday (WAGS) had the Commodore recently shouting the bar with a fleet of 41 (Thanks Phil!) The change to Thursday evening Twilight has been well accepted and fleets have steadily improved, but interestingly, some yachts still go out on Wednesdays and enjoy our balmy river conditions after a brisk WAGS race in the afternoon. Let’s keep trying to get more boats out there and support the work of our Captains to increase participation. Our staff will have some time off during January with On Water Manager Mikael, his wife Jess and Oliver enjoying a brief family holiday down south soon with family over from Sweden. Sailing Administrator Scott Nunn is also enjoying

In mid-February we will all enjoy the exciting Viper World Championships held at SoPYC with some 30 boats from seven nations competing over the period 17 to 23 February. A chance for all off us to watch World Championship sailing run out of our great venue at Coffee Point. The Championship Chairman, Graeme Monkhouse, supported by the Viper sailors and the On Water Group Staff are on top of things and we are enjoying the support of many sponsors and partners to make this event successful. We will see close to thirty Viper 640s competing with a fleet of sailors from seven countries. Keith Swinton, Sam Gilmour and Alex Landwehr are young guns who are going to try to upset the more established Viper sailors. Our Bosuns have done great work doing maintenance on our boats Coffee Point and Check Point over the Christmas break. Some of the work is routine maintenance as well as modifications relating to the Viper World Championships and the strict requirements for top of the line Race Committee boats which we can all enjoy for years to come. Our wooden boats will join in one of the Swan River Retro Series races at RFBYC on 11 March, foregoing their regular Saturday race on 10 March, and we are hoping for at least a dozen of our yachts to grace the Retro fleet of more than 40 old-timers. At the end of the sailing season, there is an opportunity to revive the Billy Run with a weekender to TCYC at Rockingham on 28-29 April. The OWG is hoping to get some feedback on this event. What do you think? Almost our lot for now, but we cannot possibly close without mentioning the 50th Geraldton Ocean Classic and Return Race starting from Fremantle 20 October and the return race starting 26 October from Geraldton. This is our signature event in Ocean Racing, so please consider getting your crew together to enjoy a holiday in the mid-west, squeezed between two memorable yacht races. (by the way, the old classic Eun Na Mara will grace the start line, and then, more gracefully retire to the Swan River again!!) All in all the Club looks great and it is always a pleasure to come down and enjoy the facilities. Ralph Newton Rear Commodore Regatta

The Pelican State Championship was a spectacular event. The club and volunteers supported the sailors and parents with a safety boat. Thanks to all involved because it was a big trip. Aiden Duthie and Hayden Lewis won for the second consecutive year. SoPYC also won the Travelers Trophy. FLYING FIFTEEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Six of our Flying Fifteens made the long journey east to the 2018 Flying15 Nationals held at Mornington Yacht Club in Melbourne. John Wilson and Matt Summers finishing in a very solid second place. Gold medals are very special and a great many lessons are learned campaigning towards and making the trip to major regattas like the Nationals and Youth Nationals. It is important to recognise that you very rarely go away and get a gold medal at your first Nationals so please take part in our Sailing Academy training programs, race in our club events, take part in WA regattas and engage with the On water Group staff to find out what is the best pathway for you. GENERAL MANAGER

David Harries General Manager We are settling back into the summer routine after the Christmas, new year break and I trust it was a safe and festive time. Boat Ramp access

In an effort to improve waste management we are upgrading bin sizes and will have specific bins for cardboard, which must be flattened prior to going into the cardboard bins to increase capacity, general mixed recycling and from midJanuary, specific glass-only bins will be at the entry to each jetty. Please help the club by being a good conscientious environmental citizen and dispose of your waste in appropriate bins; general waste, glass, cardboard (flattened and folded) so that the bins can take greater volumes of waste than is presently the case.

The changes to ramp access are fully operational and members needing access are encouraged to get their keys from the office should they require one. Feedback on New Year’s Day suggests that there are members without keys who have not registered the changes that were broadcast via Soundings and Coffee Pointers for many weeks in advance of the change. Waste Management We are finding that waste management is becoming something of a challenge and several meetings have been held with our supplier to find ways to improve the service and help members dispose of their waste appropriately. Unfortunately we are being used as a supplementary household waste collection point for general waste, garden waste and hard rubbish waste, which includes technology waste – TV’s, computers, printers etc., which fill the club bins to capacity and prevents members from disposing of general food waste, cardboard and glass from their boats and also creates issues for the food and beverage operations when disposing of kitchen and bar waste. Contractors are also leaving their hard rubbish in club bins and their items range from steel and plastic drums to packaging from engine parts, carpet, old covers and so on. In the case of steel and plastic drums, contractors are required to remove the items from the premises under the licence held with the club. We are happy to supply services for waste oil and batteries, the containers for which have been relocated to the hardstand. Other rubbish should be removed by the contractor. I would like to avoid adding a general levy to contractor licences to cover services to boat repairers and so the co-operation in the removal of hard containers, carpet etc., will assist with the management of the waste services that members pay for.

Marine Card (White Card) Work on the re-introduction of the Marine Card is continuing with contractor information graphics not far from completion. The next step is to establish a log-in system, called an Access Control System which is essentially an iPad for contractors visiting the Club and helps contractors meet their obligations, records insurance details and is linked back to the training and inductions completed by contractors working within WA yacht clubs. To refresh members’ memories, all marine contractors working on the premises of WA clubs are required to be Marine

Staff Changes Card holders which is an initiative of the Boating Industry Association in NSW and the WA BIA are looking at a similar card and having contractors registered so boat owners can find skilled, experienced and reputable boat service providers to work on their vessels. The scheme is designed to make contractors aware of their responsibilities under OSH laws and protect their employees as well as club assets and the members whose boats are being maintained. The White Card is an extension of the Blue Card scheme that was introduced three years ago and has been updated and extended to meet the requirements of Work Safe in Western Australia. Online training and inductions by clubs is part of the process that contractors go through to demonstrate they are meeting OSH safety standards and practices. It is a mandatory requirement that contractors providing services to SoPYC members are licenced by the Club. Without the Licence, contractors will not be permitted to work on the premises. Leading into the introduction of the scheme, club staff will be approaching contractors by mail and face-to-face informing them of the changes that will be introduced in the early months of 2018. When completed, Steve Clarke from Cell Media who is donating his time and resources to SoPYC, will supply SoPYC and RPYC with a boat owners safety awareness programme and contractor video to upload onto the website which will explain the need for the system.

Membership, Publications and Sponsorship Officer, Karis Aplin tendered her resignation in December. I would like to thank her for her contribution to the Club during the two years that she fulfilled the position. Karis improved the Club’s social media presence and has been working closely with the company rebuilding the Club website and digital platforms. I’m sure the finished product will be a vast improvement on our present platform. The Membership Committee and Grand Sponsor’s Committee are very appreciative of the administrative support and ideas that Karis brought to them. Lynda Mackillican has joined the Club as Membership, Publications and Sponsorship Officer and has embraced the website upgrade and the new job. Lynda joins us from Middle Harbour Yacht Club (Sydney) and has a wide experience in media graphic design production in the US and a wealth of experience in charter boats as crew and administration in the charter business, as well as being a trained photographer with one of her recent stints being part of the team of official photographers for the Fremantle stop-over of the Round The World Clipper Race. TREASURERS REPORT Treasurer's Doodlings There has been some discussion over the years about the adverse effect that private functions at the Club have on members’ enjoyment of our facilities. We acknowledge that there are times when guests from functions occupy the bar while waiting for a function to commence and this can disrupt members enjoyment of the club facilities particularly when they return to the clubhouse for results which is the peak period for seating, beverage and food service on Saturdays and Sundays. This is an aspect of functions that needs greater control and supervision of guests attending private functions. These guests need to be directed to their area and away from members’ facilities at peak times so as not to disrupt member activities. The Management Committee has requested that the operations staff ensure that this aspect of our activities is more diligently managed to avoid the conflict. On behalf of Management I apologise for any inconvenience this has created. In order to understand the contribution that private functions make to the bottom line I have reviewed the figures and now present my findings. The analysis covers four years 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and the 2017-18 year forecast from 30 November 2017 actuals.

members. We believe we remain faithful to this philosophy and having contributions from private functions is necessary to achieve this. Our job is to ensure we can repay loans that members agreed to take out for asset improvements over an appropriate time frame so that the debt burden is shared by current and future members. Most members have been delighted at the improvements made, more and better pens, more parking, more rigging areas. Some members have asked if there will be a fee increase or levy. I can reassure members there is no planned increase beyond inflation, at least up until the new riverbed lease commences in 9 years’ time. I am sure you will all agree that the physical assets of the club are now the best of any WA club and amongst the best in Australia. It is always imperative to remember not to think “what can the Club do for me” but to nurture the culture of “what can I do for my Club” for the Club to succeed and prosper. So with this in mind I hope you will all be supportive of the direction we are taking with private functions. I would be happy to discuss any of the above points with any member on a one on one basis. Bradley G. J. Abbott Treasurer

While we have detailed gross profit analysis between Food and Beverage trading sectors of the Club wages and overheads have been allocated on the basis of turnover to give relative contributions of the various sectors. It is also not possible to differentiate between Members and non-members private functions. The percentage contributions are as follows:

Bar Take Away Private Functions Club Functions TOTAL TOTAL F&B NET Private Function Net

14/15 33 2 59 6 100% $603,287 $355,939

15/16 41 2 50 7 100% $561,142 $280,571

16/17 36 1 56 7 100% $490,786 $274,840

17/18 (Forecast) 35 1 57 7 100% $549,399 $314,238

Given this contribution to the bottom line over this period, the effect of reducing private function contributions would mean that membership fees or pen fees would increase significantly. The Club has enjoyed the benefits private functions income has provided over the years and it is through this income that we have managed to finance and construct the excellent facilities that we enjoy today. Successive generations of members have approved the capital expenditure and borrowings based on our ability to accommodate private functions and the benefits are readily seen when we look at the western hardstand, the recently completed jetty 4/5 and the hardstand and travel lift facilities. The Management of your Club is conscious of the reliance we have on private function income and the effect changing economic conditions have on that contribution. As a result, we are actively prioritising more member functions of the type that have proved very successful over the past few years. Our challenge is to understand changes, adapt quickly and above all remain relevant and respond rapidly to changes in the event and functions market. The Club has a long-held philosophy of keeping boating affordable and the Finance and Management Committees are very conscious of maintaining this by ensuring fees and charges remain as affordable as possible and so within the reach of all

SECURITY & SAFETY

As the Chair of the Security and Safety Committee (SSC) my first task has been to get Management Committee approval for the Committee’s Terms of Reference and to establish a Committee. This was achieved in December. The reason for this is that Management Committee believes that a strategic approach to these issues must be taken so that security and safety efforts align with the Club Strategic Plan and with the club’s financial management strategy. Broadly speaking, the Security and Safety Committee’s remit is to ensure that the club’s interests are addressed in terms of: • Safety - this includes safety for on and off water activities as well as the physical and mental well-being for staff, members, guests, members of the public and contractors who supply services to the club. • Security – this includes the physical security of the club premises, hardstands, jetties, ramps, equipment (fixed and moveable) as well as the security pertaining to safety. • Risk Management – this means the establishment of a simple risk management framework by which security and safety threats are identified, assessed and treated. In the longer term, this will become an important tool in the club’s governance. The reason for this approach is that with an ad hoc and reactive approach, the Club could end up with security and safety measures that are expensive and counter-productive to the aims and ethos of the club. In short, we could protect ourselves from ourselves. However, this does not mean that the Management Committee or SSC are unaware of some of the immediate issues facing the Club in this space. Any safety or security incidents on or of the water must in the first instance be reported to an SoPYC staff member. Any serious or significant incidents will be brought to the attention of Management Committee as they arise and where necessary; investigations conducted, and remedial measures put in place. To that end, SSC has requested progress reports against remediation recommendations at each Management Committee meeting until the matters are finalised. SSC will use this material to guide our actions in both an operational and strategic context. In terms of strategy. the initial work on a security risk assessment of the club is in progress as is a review of the current security arrangements. However, in the interim, there are several simple things that members can do to increase security and improve safety within the club environment. Firstly, secure your vessels and any valuable equipment contained in them. Secondly, safely operate any equipment and observe any safety requirements in the operation of that equipment. For the boaties – sail safely ensuring that radios are switched on and any equipment, safety devices and PFD are serviceable and accessible. Report any suspicious activity or misbehaviour within the club environment to staff members, and finally, please respect each other. The club is one we can be justly proud of and good personal safety and security can underpin this. In the interim, stay safe and secure. SSC looks forward to providing members with updates on the development of plans to address security and safety threats to our club.

LADIES LUNCH GROUP

The November Ladies Lunch was outside in the marquee on the lawn overlooking the lovely Swan River and weather wise it was a perfect day. Our guest speaker was the very charming and talented 'Herb Faust' and his assistant Adrian. Herb, who won Aussie Iron Chef, is head chef and owner at Houghtons Winery, so ladies if you're looking for somewhere special to go, it's a lovely drive out there.

After that the yacht club served delicious canapĂŠs and there certainly was no lack of food. Desserts were also served and you could help yourself to as many as you could eat, including cheese and biscuits, fruit platters, tea and coffee. (There goes the diet, I heard the ladies saying) Thank you Herb and Adrian, it was delightful to have you at our Ladies Luncheon Group - We really appreciated you joining us.

Herb cooked a delicious entree in front of the ladies, showing them step by step how to create a meal in a bamboo leaf. December Ladies Lunch As requested by the Tuesday Ladies Lunch group, the annual Christmas boat trip went ahead in December. We met at the club at 11am, there were about 90 ladies... some missed out because they didn't book early enough and were disappointed. We were all allocated to a number of boats, which were so kindly donated by the members of SoPYC who gave up their time and boats to give the ladies a Christmas cruise. All alcohol was purchased at the bar and put on board the boats. It was a lovely day to be on the river and the skippers were absolutely charming and hospitable, nothing was too

much trouble. We ventured off and all boats eventually moved up infront of Matilda Bay where platters of food were served. After a few hours we headed back to the yacht club and there was lots of fun and laughter on board. Thank you to all the skippers and crew who donated their time and boats and made it such a great day. Please note* ladies....Next year we are planning lots of interesting guest speakers and events. However please book early so you don't miss out...we are also welcoming any new suggestions... Luciana Giancristofaro, Ladies Lunch Group

Save the date for the next Ladies Lunch ~ February 13th 2018 This months speaker is Shelley Archer, former Australian politician. She is a passionate supporter for gender equality, education, health and wellbeing for disadvantagd children, she talks about her own rich history with Ngala Child Care Centers and being a young mother at 15. This is a story not to be missed! 10

SAILABILITY

Sailability returns after Christmas had in December last year. We had an impromptu performance from John Hassan in putting on the personal safety harnesses and we are currently assessing the method used in putting the slings on the Red Witches prior to launching and retrieving the yachts. A last day BBQ was held for the volunteers with a slap up feed for all who attended prior to going for a sail on Wednesday. One or two of the sponsors were in attendance and many thanks to them for their continued support. Given that it was a windy day, most of the attendees were circumspect in their consumption of the wonderful supply of wine supplied by Julie and Peter Hancock but the steaks and snaggers went down a treat. Apart from supplying our shirts, sponsor Brian Cross has a great range of safety gear. Contact him if you need his advice and or gear. Alan Wilson, like Brian is a longtime supporter of Sailability and keeps on looking after the wheels under our trailers. Will Hammond from Doyles Sails has fortunately not had to repair any more sails recently, but given the age of some of them, I’m sure he’ll be needed. As ever our thanks to Melville Rotary for their support and to Appealing Signs who has kept our craft named. A special thanks to the bosons of the club who are active in attending to our boats. Many thanks to them as well.

It’s fantastic to see the new volunteers at work with Sailability. By the time you read this, we’ll be swinging back into action again, rested and ready to look after our friends again. For those of you who have forgotten, the 17th of January was our starting day. The fresh intake of guys and girls has really breathed a bright response into the team, lifting us into new endeavors. They have come in with original ideas and support for our guests and the reaction from them has been wonderful. In fact it’s left the old hands wondering why we hadn’t thought about this beforehand. One of the innovations was a team meeting where safety concerns could be brought out and examined and the first was

Some of our volunteers have moved on and we will need future help in this end of the season. There are openings on the sailing side of things with skippers and crew always at need. The same with the land based section, those who load and retrieve the guests and put the boats in and out of the water., On the bright side we’ve two new charming front desk people but even they need a break, so don’t feel hardly done by, come on down and put your name forward. If you have the time free on a Wednesday morning, Lynne and Liz with their crew of volunteers are looking to welcome you on board the Sailability team and the fun and games that occur on the water every Wednesday morning, weather permitting. The after sailing lunches in the bar are getting better each year. Please contact Lynne Newton on 0408 385 959 and lynne.newton@westnet.com.au or Liz Warman on 0419 949006 and liz.warman@iinet.au

POWER TORQUE CHRISTMAS JETTY PARTY Saturday 25 November 2017

The Annual Christmas Jetty Party hosted by the Power Yacht Section was a perfect way to mark the end of the Power Section calendar and the start of the Festive Season. Preparations were made during the afternoon; fridges stocked, lights installed, and a floating bandstand set up ready for the fun to begin. As the sun set and the sky darkened the full effect of the afternoon’s efforts came to light, literally!

The combined effect of food, wine and music energised the crowd. The New Reflections were a great hit and they put in a mighty effort. It was well after midnight before the exhausted musicians sang their last ‘last’ song for the evening and the dancing stopped. Then began the steady armada of trolley-loads of equipment being trundled off the jetty. A huge thanks to all who arrived early to set up for the evening. Power Captain Amanda Watson and Garry Morrison were there from midday. Garry recovering from recent surgery was supposed to be in supervisor mode but couldn’t resist getting involved. Justin Taylor arranged for boats to be moved and Bosun Robbie organised the floating jetty. Vice Captain John Spanos arrived at three in the afternoon to help and was still on Roadie duties at 1:00am in the morning. Yachties and Poweries entered the spirit and decorated their boats making this year’s party one of the best. Well done all!

Club member Steve Keene and his group The New Reflections provided the musical backdrop from the relative safety of a section of floating jetty between pens. This left room for mingling and dancing on the jetty and was a great success. The band played from light til late and even managed to pick up an extra backing singer. Don’t give up your day job, Tony Walther!

Where did he get his energy? Must be something in his drink!

Many of the Power Yacht Section headed of to Rottnest, Rockingham and beyond for the festive season and are now slowly returning to their pens and their day jobs. It will soon be time to settle down to some serious preparations for the coming Time Trialling season. Coming events: The first event on the calendar is the Xantippe Night Time Trial on Friday 9th March. This is actually the last event for the 2017 season but it is a great way to ease back in. The Pre-Season Cocktail Party on Friday 27th April heralds the approach of the new season and Winter Opening Day is on Saturday 5th May. Training sessions will be held on Sunday 29 April for anyone new to Time Trialling and Skippers and Navigators who woud like to brush up on their skills. Reminders with all the information for these events will be in the weekly editions of Coffee Pointers. The Power Scribe

DIVISION 2

Division 2 - Having fun...as usual! With the festive season behind us the remainder of the season this year looks like heating up! At the time of writing the competition up the front of the field sees Ballina, Mingara, Don't Panic, Cover Drive and Colusion in contention. What's not looking too good is 'Putty Exploring'. Your scribes, Jen and I, are reminded of the song by Peter, Paul & Mary..."When will they ever learn"? In December both Against All Odds and Good Act found the bottom. Good Act on a Wednesday pre-start thought he could leave the Starboard spit- Heathcote 22 to Port and take a short cut - Ben very quickly found that .7 of a metre under the keel doesn't work when you draw 1.5. Full sail and bearing away he went hard on, going nowhere. Coffee Point saved the day and Ben and his ever improving crew made it to the start albeit about a minute late. Great to see his Cole back in the club after getting a big 'makeover' that took a few months removing the dreaded OSMOSIS. Looks spick and span now and is sailing well. Sorry about the distant photo. Early December Against All Odds drove straight on the putty. Come on Tawake and crew, you should know better by now and know that there is only about a meter when one gets so close to Applecross 39. Lucky it was a South East’er so he was able to bear away and sail off. Late footnote, On Wednesday 20 December, a beautifully restored rather long, black sailed Divi 1 boat did even better. Stuck hard and fast. What was the banter at results? "Better ring Spec Savers". A few new additions to the Divi 2 fleet. We now see Russell Davis and the crew on Sirius out on Wednesdays. It takes time to get to know her Russell. She has the track record so you have a good little boat under you.

18

And what about David Atkinson and the team on IGAWA. Aren't they giving the Divi 2 leaders a bit of stick. I mentioned to him back in early December that they should do well when the FARR's joined us in an invitation race. "Oh no" says David "a few of them are very, very fast", well what did he do?, went out and blitzed them all - Well done David and team, and now flying the SoPYC flag after moving clubs. Lastly, how fast things can change on a blustery day. Saturday 16th December - final race for 2017. An incident at Robins, (no names here) we witnessed a clear Port and Starboard which did not have a good outcome. Natalouka was to Windward of this and on Port and I saw this unfolding so thought, "not good, this could end badly, I'm out of here!". Threw onto Starboard to be safe and get out of there and in the process learnt a nifty little new move. I didn't release the jib and we promptly did a 360. Simply waited to go around and made the mark not needing to reset the Jib. Cool hey? Lost probably 30 seconds but it worked well. Scribe footnote:As we have all seen many times during our racing years and really well demonstrated and covered in the Sydney Hobart start, Port and Starboard IS probably the most basic rule of sailing. If at all in doubt and you are on port, dip below or tack well in advance...it's the safest outcome - always. Here's a link for those that did not see it;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDpvoNup-uM Ron (Dingo) Reddingius and Jen Merigan SP557 - Natalouka

DIVISION 3 The first half of this season for Division 3 has been one that is marked by participation levels that have been quite variable. The number of participants has ranged from five to around eight, and is now starting to climb, with both Avalon and Windjana making appearances.

Lewis-Driver), Countdown (David Thoms) and Tanglefoot (Bob Benton), to mention a few. Paul reinforced this and said one of the highlights was in trying to emulate Murray Jones in Arpege, who was always incredibly focused and precise with his sailing and from which he learnt a great deal.

As was experienced last season, despite the difference in boat sizes, competition within the division is healthy, with the lead boats, Bluegrass, Chrysalis, Sonatine, Chelsea and Chrysalis, all having spirited and close racing amongst one another.

Over the years, Chelsea has won a swag of competitions, many on multiple occasions. This includes championship and consistency. A couple of years ago, Chelsea also won the club’s Frank Sampson Trophy, which gives those on her great deal of pride.

Bluegrass, sailed by Mark Graham, is currently leading the consistency series, followed by Chris Lewis-Driver’s Sonatine. Snapping at his heals is Chelsea, skippered by Peter Clarke. Intrinzic (John Connell), Chrysalis (Tony Edman), Commotion (Martyn Compton) and San Michele (Robert Schmitz) are all lined up a few points down, should any of the lead boats falter. Division Chair, Laurence Hansen, has signalled he’d like to arrange a meeting in March of Division members to start planning next year’s calendar, plus to consider a proposal regarding greater engagement and possible collaboration with other clubs around events. He is looking for a good turnout at this meeting and will advise a date shortly.

Feature Boat – Chelsea

Peter also campaigns Chelsea in the winter JAM series on Wednesday afternoons, which they won in Division C last year. When asked about the success to their partnership, Peter (with his usual dry humour) commented that it was simple, “what happens on the water, stays on the water”. But he did emphasise that being good mates and having a commonality in purpose was important. And for Paul, he said while they always try to do well and be competitive, it isn’t the prime motivation. Rather he enjoys just getting out on the water to forget about work and other things that often occupy oneself, the camaraderie within the group and, of course, the cut and thrust of racing. Des Lewis, Division 3 Scribe

This edition’s feature boat is Chelsea, an MB24, currently being sailed by Peter Clarke, who is in partnership with Paul Ryan. Chelsea has been very successful and been one of the yachts to beat in Division 3 and, prior to that, Division 4. She has a formidable race record in these divisions, sailed for many years by Paul and more recently Peter. Both are extremely capable skippers which has seen Chelsea one of the frontrunners in the divisions she has competed over a number of years. But the story of Peter and Paul’s competition out of SoPYC, culminating in their co-ownership of Chelsea, goes back to the early ‘60’s through Paul’s father, Terry, who was actively involved in the Club for many years. This involvement gave Paul the sailing bug, from which he has never recovered, having sailed himself since the 70’s right through to the present. The sailing partnership with Peter and Paul started in the mid ‘80’s. Terry had stopped sailing his then yacht, Five O, which was an MB21 that had fitted out and campaigned for more than a decade. Terry was suffering ill-health and the boat hadn’t been raced for a couple of years. In the meantime, Peter and Paul met while studying their Masters at Murdoch and one thing led to another where they both discovered a love for sailing. Before much longer and after they’d finished their study, they got together with Peter’s brother in law, John Altham, and hit the water in Five O (since renamed Galadriel). They successfully campaigned Five O right through until around 2007, when the three of them decided a change would be good. So they pooled resources, with each taking a third share in Chelsea, which had been sailed out of RPYC, and commenced sailing in Division 4. Up until the past couple of years, Paul skippered Chelsea and with some additional crew, they were very competitive in the division. John eventually stepped out of sailing due to other commitments and Peter and Paul became equal partners in the boat. Peter fondly remembers the days when Division 4 was at its peak. He commented on how much they enjoyed the tight and satisfying racing against the likes of Magnum Force (David Muir), Arpege (Murray Jones), Sonatine/Spray (Chris

RED WITCH FLEET REPORT Do you remember the good old days when things were made to last? Like the cranes at Fremantle Port Authority that seem to go on forever and the Red Witch yachts. Back in the 1970’s there were over 240 Red Witch yachts made right here in Perth, tough enough for all conditions and with enviable downwind speed. These yachts were designed for local conditions and their level of performance was a great achievement back in the day, and they are still relevant today. The Red Witch fleet at SoPYC is currently enjoying a revival. Whether it is due to their affordability or their compact, easily trailable size or being a simple rig that is easy for training and development, they are a great all-round keelboat. In recent times many boats have changed to different owners and with some who have never sailed before. There is an increasing number of young people getting involved and really enjoying sailing these fun boats, thanks to the involvement and dedication of the Sea Scouts. Many of the Red Witches registered at SoPYC are crewed by members of Scouts WA, so as well as racing at the club, the boats are also used in Sea Scout sailing training and events. Scouts WA also own a number of other Red Witches and thanks to the stories of the fun we having racing at the club, some of these boats and crews are also looking to get involved in the SoPYC fleet. This bodes well for a healthy and competitive Red Witch fleet to be sustained well into the future. In January this year, seven Red Witches from the WA Sea Scout fleet (including SoPYC boats and crews) sailed out to Carnac Island and back as part of a four day “Inside Charge” sail training program. The beauty of a Red Witch of course, is that the mast height is designed so the boat can be sailed under the Fremantle bridges without dropping the mast, which makes it very easy to get in and out of the river. It was an exciting and action-packed day’s sailing and the fleet is already making plans to go “outside” again for another offshore adventure.

memorable and enjoyable time when your family enjoys the same sport that you do. As you look across the western hard stand at all the various boats, you see a lot of white hulls. Then you look back at the Red Witch fleet and you see every other hull colour. So we’re the colourful fleet enjoying some good competition and having a lot of fun.

Results In the first half of the summer sailing season, all boats have been steadily improving with only seconds (not minutes) separating the handicap results. Notable performances would be both of the yellow hulled boats, Star Witch, skippered by Jessamy Case and Oracle, skippered by Peter Gillett. Both can be very quick on their day. The constant big improver, moving up through the fleet would be Striker, skippered by Burke Brown. They’ve had the lead in a few races and are now sailing very well. The coaching days provided by our on-water group coaching team have been well received. Thank you, team. In the Club Championships, the red boat Shenanigans, skippered by Kelvin Uren, leads the way with three bullets.

Also outside of weekly Saturday racing, another exciting event coming up for many of the Red Witches at SoPYC and WA Sea Scouts is the “Swanabout” 30-hour sailing marathon race in March where Scouts and Venturers sail continuously throughout the day and night between “bases” on the Swan River to clock up as many kilometres as they can to vie for prizes in each class. All boats carry GPS trackers and radios and their position and rate of progress is tracked by a custom-made GPS

Looking for Red Witch Boats When you start searching for a Red Witch yacht to purchase, you’re not going to find a brand new boat. All of these boats were built over forty years ago. So you will normally find one looking a bit unloved and needing some TLC. This was the case for Daniel Wyatt who purchased the Red Witch ‘Escapade’ in May 2017.

charting application “Swantrak” which helps manage the large fleet during the event. There are a number of father and son combinations in the SoPYC fleet. On Witch Doctor, Richard Inglis sails with both sons James and Ben, whilst Peter Gillett sails with son Blake on Oracle. On Escapade, Daniel Wyatt sails with his sons Isaac and Samuel (and occasionally Jakob) and on Striker, Burke Brown (son) skippers whilst Paul (Dad) is crew. For many seasons my son Adam sailed on Shenanigans with me. A very

She was advertised on Gumtree and found to be in very poor condition, on a rusted old trailer sitting forlornly under a big gum tree. There was no obvious stress cracking so her base structure was sound. Restoring this old boat made a good family project and a great way to get the kids involved in a project of their own and then eventually out on the water. To Daniel and his family’s credit, Escapade has been fully restored, including the trailer and looks a ‘million dollars’. With a bit more training, experience and tuning, this crew is aiming to get the best out of their boat to put more pressure on the rest of the fleet, adding to the fantastic competition and camaraderie found in the Red Witch fleet. 2017 YOUTH SAILING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS SANYA, CHINA 9 – 16 DECEMBER 2017

Every year the Youth World Championships brings together the top youth sailors from all over the world. For the 2017 regatta in Sanya, China there were 380 sailors from 62 nations. South of Perth Yacht Club had an amazing representation with club members Elyse Ainsworth competing in the Laser Radial, Shannon and Jayden Dalton competing in the Nacra 15 and Rome Featherstone crewing in the 420. Written below are some words from each of the sailors reflecting on their preparation and the regatta. Tessa Parkinson, Head Coach Elyse Ainsworth, Laser Radial - 7th Place In July I went back to Europe more determined than ever to regain my fitness and strength for the U21 World’s in Belgium, Aarhus Test event in Demark and the Open World’s in Medemblik. The U21 Worlds started with great promise, with several top 10 results and pushing it with the top girls. However, due to some technical errors on my behalf I dropped down the leader board to finish 18th. Although, this wasn’t the finish I wanted, there were some valuable lessons taken away including how to sail in massive tides. On a different note, I can say that the waffles in Belgium are quite delicious and were often our dessert of choice if I had mastered something good on the water! Having said goodbye to Belgium, we packed the car and made our way to Aarhus, Denmark. The venue for the Open Women’s World’s next year and the first country qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. I was keen to fix the mistakes of the past and post some solid results. It was a great experience to race with some of the best women in the world and watch how they race consistently at a high level. The Test Event produced a range of conditions that were both tough and challenging even for the best sailors, however I managed to score 3 top 10 results and 2 podium results which gave me a solid 12th placing overall in only my 2nd outing against the world’s best women laser sailors. Following the Denmark event, we went to Medemblik in the Netherlands for the Open Women’s World Championships. Feeling a little more confident, I started my training groundwork with great ease and satisfaction knowing that I had done the best preparation I possible could. With some good training days up my sleeve, I was ready for racing to start, all that was left to do was to get my charter boat. In a very frustrating environment, the charter boat issue turned out to be a bit of a debacle, as there weren’t enough to go around, and these were then subsidised by sub-standard boats all of different qualities. To find out which boat you got (a brand new one or a leaky, dented one), the boats were issued via a lucky dip system. Needless to say, the sailors who got the leaky ones were certainly not impressed, me included. Although incredibly frustrating there wasn’t anything you could do but do the best with what you had. The event itself provided tough racing in a big fleet and although I had a rather rough regatta finishing mid fleet, it gave me lots to work on both physically and mentally. With full year of travel and competition, I finished the international season with the honour of representing Australia at the ISAF Youth World Championships in China. With light and shifty winds throughout the regatta my result of 7th was for me disappointing, I had hoped to do much better but I can walk away from youth sailing knowing I recorded an equal best result by an Australian female in the Laser class. My focus now will be to finish the season at the National Championships in Brisbane, have a short break to refresh and then commence my 2018 campaign in February in readiness for another crack at the big-league in Europe. A big thank you to SoPYC for all the support they provide, of which is instrumental on my journey over the next two years.

Shannon and Jayden Dalton, Nacra 15 - Silver Medal We have just arrived home from Sanya, China were the youth worlds were held. This time last year we were in an anxious wait for our new Nacra 15 hoping to start some fast catamaran sailing, and before we knew it we had qualified for the youth worlds. We prepared for this regatta by going to other competitions such as Qld Youth Week and travelling over to Medemblik, Holland where Mikael Lundh coached us and the other SoPYC Team Georgia Payne/Emma Jones. This was a great opportunity to train and race a regatta with many of the competitors going to China. The Youth World championships was a very tough regatta with tight racing and different people at the top. The race course was very shifty and unpredictable meaning you had to be constantly focused. We are very proud to have come home with a silver medal and unfortunately missing out on gold by count back (meaning we tied). Thanks to everyone who supported us and helped us reach this our goals. Unfortunately that was the last regatta that Jayden and I could sail together in the Nacra 15 class as it is a youth boat. Jayden will hopefully be going on to some more fast and interesting boats whilst I will keep chipping away at the Nacra 15 heading to the nationals and youth nationals over in Qld at the start of January.

Romë Featherstone, 420 - Gold Medal The 2017 Youth World Championships were held in Sanya, China where we arrived to an amazing setup, a boat that we would share for the entire regatta with the Australian girls team and to be told we couldn’t eat meat, as it was full of steroids! There was to be no training prior to the official training day and we were the fastest team to rig our boat thanks to coach Belinda for lining up in the dark to register us! We shook out our nerves with a hundred meter lead in the practise race the day before the regatta began. Sitting in first place on day three wearing the yellow bibs proved not so lucky for anyone in our fleet as the Israeli boys had a shocker the day before and our day turned out even worse with a 15 and 13. On day 4 we won the first race with a large margin, which then put us in contention for a medal. In the next race we finished in 11th behind USA who were now just one point in the lead from us. This was the tightest regatta I had ever been in.

I didn’t sleep at all the last night but I didn’t feel tired. We had been sitting in 2nd the last two days and we now had to place better than 9th, so we had to beat the Americans and not let Israel speed ahead by more than two places and then we would have ourselves a World Title. It was looking good on the water as no one was trying to match race us out of contention but then we ran into the stern of the French boat who was sitting in fourth position overall and still a threat. We did a 720 and caught back up to 6th at the top mark. We lost a couple of boats because we hit the gate mark and did another circle but we were still in a position that we could win. I just blocked out everything and concentrated on making the boat fly on the final work and with the raising of the open pumping flag we screamed on the downwind and placed 3rd across the line. We were the 2017 420 Youth World Champions!

2018 AUSTRALIAN YOUTH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Michael Compton, Laser 4.7 - 1st Place Michael Compton is a true SoPYC product, winning the double at 15 years of age! Michael is enjoying the support of the Peel Regional Sport Academy (PRSA) and has shown that consistancy in training and preperation bears fruit. Winning the 2018 Laser 4.7 Nationals and the 2018 Australian Youth Championships is a remarkable achievement. We will no doubt hear more from Michael in the future!

OFFSHORE REPORT Christmas Wrap Up The first half of the Offshore season is now complete with the final weekend of racing on December 2 and 3 for the Rockingham weekend. This leads into an extended break for the offshore fleet to allow the Sydney Hobart Campaigners to get across the country and back and just as importantly for the offshore sailors to spend a bit of time with their family and friends over the holiday season. The race program every year is carefully structured to manage race load , but the racing itself and the preparation and postrace work is extremely demanding with very hour at sea being matched with behind the scenes work. The first half of the year has been a very successful series of races so far for the SoPYC oriented competitors with a lot of club sailors across the fleet and the ever present Farrago and Argo flying the flag together with the tenacious double hander efforts of Tim Harrison in Vision. The season opening race saw Tim Harrison take out his inaugural 1st place with a YAH win in the George Law Race in September. Argo also came away with IRC 3rd. The ever popular Coventry Reef race saw Argo step it up to a 2nd in both divisions with an unlikely second over the line including a memorable demolition of SoPYC’s own Walk on The Wild Side being left four minutes behind over the line. Garth Curren was generous in congratulations for a race of extreme light wind conditions that saw his extensive water line wallow. The next race up was our very own Geraldton Ocean Classic which saw nine die hard Siska chasers turn up. The downwind flyers had the right conditions. The week up in Geraldton was again memorable with Argo, Farrago and the Walsh Family’s, Twitch staying on and enjoying some excellent J & M racing in the bay with Twitch taking out the Lobster Pot Series. The race home was a small fleet with Argo winning in Division one and getting an otherwise unlikely plaque of the Gun Trophy as the fastest and Farrago winning in Division Two and

24

overall. The Roland Smith short blue water race was next up and Farrago came out to pick up the double 1st while Argo ran a drum and Vision, after putting in a mighty effort retired on the return leg. The next two back to back weekenders made up the IRC Offshore State Championships, starting with the Carnac Island race, which was run in heavy and demanding winds and the downwind planning yachts dominated the day. The next day of three WWL races was a battle between Obsession, Black Betty and Argo picking up a 4th, 3rd and 2nd with Keith Swinton adding some serious intent to the crew’s efforts while Black Betty helmed by Sam Gilmore picked up two 1sts and a second. At the end of the first weekend the championship was poised with Black Betty on 7, Obsession on 8 and Argo on 10 after count backs. The next weekend wrapped up the IRC States with the weekend races to Rockingham and a Sunday recovery WWL. With an unlikely forecast of southerly’s down and northerly’s back the Fat 40’s finally had an advantage over the planning yachts and Argo was hot on the line bristling with SoPYC sailors with Andrew Bell, Bruce Miller and Warren Erasmus joining Chris Higham and PC Guy Skinner locked in for the return races. Argo managed to pick up the double 1st on the race down and the Championship was all of a sudden thrown open with just two races to go!. The final two races on the Sunday came undone with both races producing 5th places and Argo had to settle for 3rd place in the IRC Offshore Championship’s to maintain their podium presence for three years in a row. Over the Christmas break many of our yachts will head out to sea for the Cockburn Sound Regatta, with a large contingent of H28’s being joined by many of our cruisers and sports boats for this well run and enjoyed event. SoPYC Crew will no doubt be back out there in January to lick off the new year and the second half of the offshore season. In the meantime the offshore mob wish you all a prosperous new year on the podium somewhere. Your Sea Scribe, Chris Higham

HERRESHOFF HILL NEWS

When I was scripting this article, Christmas had just past and the New Year has just begun. All the best for 2018, may it be happy and healthy and keep in mind, for the year ahead:

Rounding the mark at the Christmas break, the H28 Consistency Series has Nerrima with a solid 10-point lead, Corella and Wynella closely follow.

Whether you think you can or you think you cannot, you're right.

The H28 Championship is very tight after three races with The First Jindarra and Corella having a two-point differential. Nerrima is in third position, half a dozen points away.

Herreshoff Hill Headlines

H28 fleet numbers for Saturday are marginally up with Aloha, Karoleeya and Alma joining the regular Saturday boats.

Currently the H28 fleet is planning to participate in the Swan River Retro Series on Sunday 11th of March. The event will be at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. The H28 race for the day before will not be held at SoPYC with most H28’s participating in Sunday’s Retro Series. With the plight of the Duyfken requiring a replacement of engines, the SoPYC H28 fleet made a donation of $1,500 to a sister Western Australian built wooden boat. Many thanks to the skippers and crew who kindly donated to this worth cause and may the Duyfken continue to sail for many more years.

Saturday Sailing The summer sailing season is in the midst of the Christmas break at SoPYC.

28

Unfortunately, there have been a few occasions when sailing has not quite gone as planned. Les Brooker and Nerrima had lamentable moment with the spinnaker. The said spinnaker was later displayed on Herreshoff Hill in many shreds with a non-too pleased Les. None the less the spinnaker made a successful return a week or so later with Les using his sewing skills to restore the kite. Well done Les. Bill Richards and Swiftsure Saga also returned back to the pens with a slightly bent mast, not once but twice. Finally, Aloha broke a rudder in late December, with Andrew Minto using his carpentry skills to get the boat back in the water early in the new year.

Finally, a mention of the Windward/Leeward Series held during the Saturday summer races. The series is an attempt to provide a change to the normal around the buoy Saturday racing. There were mixed reactions to the first Windward/ Leeward race in early November with the next race scheduled on Saturday 3rd February.

Wednesday Sailing Numbers for H28 sailing up to the Christmas break averaging over six boats with a few November races having eight finishers. Great to see improved numbers for Wednesday sailing with both Alma and Carina being consistent participants. As usual racing has been closely contested for consistency points with The First Jindarra and Alma sharing the lead with 31 points, closely followed by Mariner on 34 points. Wynella and Corella are still well in the hunt, thus making for a very interesting racing in the second half of the summer season. Note that Andy Lane who sails on Wynella has taken over the role of handicapper for Wednesday’s H28 racing. I am sure Andy will clarify any queries on Wednesday handicapping, however remember the TopYacht System does all the calculations and the handicapper will only intervene in exceptional circumstance (new boat in fleet, etc). VIPERS

VIPER 640 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS The Western Australian State titles held over the weekend of December 9 and 10 were a leadup to the forthcoming World titles in February. The format was changed to late afternoon racing followed by morning racing to hopefully get a good seabreeze and then the lighter easterly winds in the morning.

the right, and then waited that extra 100m for that bit more wind to tack back in….. failed Consistent results meant a good points lead for the two tied leaders - Graeme Monkhouse and John Park at the end of day 1. The carpark drinks to pour over the days results were followed by a great BBQ with Wagu beef, king prawns, oysters and wine and made for a special night . Day two started glassy but filled in to about 8 knots. It was a mixed bag of results but Graeme Monkhouse was still the most consistent and finished the series with a well deserved first place. Michael Cameron had a good day and slipped past John Park into second place overall. The racing was close and there were six different heat winners. The race management was great, in light shifty conditions. Next step - World Titles - February 2018

Of course, the breeze didn’t do as expected. The seabreeze didn’t fill in and it was 12 knots and dropping for the afternoon races. The first race was won by Rod Beurteaux in You Get in the Bowl. The left side was favoured, and continued to be favoured for all the races. Boats that went hard left led at the top mark and generally finished in the top places. Those that were forced or chose a step to

SPACESAILER 22 A Windy Cockburn Sound Regatta For the third year in a row SS22 Wildfire sailed down the coast for the annual Cockburn Sound Regatta. This year The Cruising Yacht Club of WA (TCYC) was celebrating the 60th anniversary of this four-day event, held between Christmas and New Year’s Eve on the beautiful protected waters of Mangles Bay off Rockingham. Fifty boats representing most Perth yacht clubs took part so it was indeed a spectacle. The regatta, formally billed as “serious sailors having serious fun”, which it surely is, but informally it can be described as the regatta for people without boring family commitments at this time of year. The atmosphere is pleasant and feels more like a club in the country rather than the city. This is probably largely due to the big number of friendly volunteers. Several other boats from SoPYC competed including H28 Karolyeea skippered by its previous owner, the well-known SoPYC identity, Jay Lawry. It was also great to have Christina and John Heydon lending their experience to race officials.

The regatta is a mix of formats including windward-leeward races, around the buoys races and a long passage race which gives plenty of variety. However, this year strong winds led to all three afternoon races being abandoned and the long passage race for our fleet was cancelled. As it was, we only used a jib other than our No.3 on one occasion. As in previous years Wildfire had a composite crew. The regatta structure means that people who are used to sailing on the often murky Swan River can experience the delights of the beautiful blue waters of Cockburn Sound. Wildfire’s crew included Denis Bell and Ken Clarke, from State Champion boat Crossroads, and Mike Smith from Raconteur. With such a quality crew one would expect our boat to sail very competitively. However, it’s all very well to have a top crew but ultimately, it’s up to the nut behind the wheel (in this case, tiller). We sailed well but the results did not reflect this. We had some fantastic spinnaker runs and reaches and several very close races against Jay in Karolyeea which was lots of fun. It would be great to have a few more smaller boats join us next year for four days of fabulous ocean sailing. Bruce Uren, Skipper of Wildfire

PELICANS The weekly racing and training has continued at the club for the SoPYC pelican fleet with the training intensifying in the build up to the 60th states which was held at Esperance Yacht club where the sailors have refined their techniques and developed their skills thanks to Matt Clark-Massera and new coach Matt Lingard. Along with the weekly club racing our SoPYC pelican fleet headed down to the Peter Mapstone Regatta at East Fremantle on 22nd October 2017. The day was filled with light winds and currents and saw our boats well positioned with Seaking, Aiden Duthie and Hayden Lewis picking up first place and Seas The Day, Teyah Duthie and Regan Sommerville coming second. The annual pre states regatta, “Crab Classic” took place at Port Bouvard on the 2nd of December. The event made for great practice for our SoPYC pelicans as the last regatta before states.

two championship races in the afternoon. Tuesday began with a 10 am start in the light breeze and after lunch, three races took place with heavy enough winds and large enough waves to tip over some of the pelicans. The safety boat provided by SoPYC was on overtime and many of the kids, as well as Eserpence Yacht club, were extremely appreciative of our club for supplying our rib for the regatta. Tuesday ended off with the Pelican disco and food vans parked around the club where the sailors and their families had a wonderful night listening to the music. Wednesday was lay day, with team SoPYC pelican heading down to Lucky Bay and Hellfire beach to recharge their batteries. Great fun was had with most having a turn with the standup paddle boards as well as having photos with the beach kangeroos.

The overall championship results for the “Crab Classic” were: 1st – Seaking, Aiden & Hayden (SoPYC) 2nd – Seas The Day, Teyah & Regan (SoPYC) 3rd- Tasty Taddie, Ben & Athena (EFYC) Our SoPYC pelicans headed down for the highlight on the Pelican calendar the 60th State Titles which took place from the 7th - 12th of January 2018 at Esperance Yacht Club Yacht club. 24 pelicans were registered for the event with 48 sailors coming from Geraldton, Geograph Bay, Esperance, and SoPYC. The 60th State Championships kicked off with light winds for the invitation race on Monday morning and were followed by

Racing continued on Thursday morning with strong winds of gusts allegedly up to 30 knots with the average wind speed 25 knots which proved challenging to the less experienced sailors and some of the top sailors in the fleet. These high winds left the sailors sitting on the beach after the first race until around 4 pm when an abandonment flag was hoisted signaling the abandonment of the rest of the scheduled races for the day. On the final day, Friday, with shifty conditions two races were held in the morning completing the 9 race event.

PELICANS

Overall our South of Perth Pelican fleet put in an amazing effort at the states, resulting in the team picking up the travelers award at the presentation night on Friday. Cleopatra took home 1st place in consistency, Hayden Lewis was awarded best crew and Georgette Keating won the under 12’s skipper award. Aiden and Hayden in Seaking achieved a fantastic feat by winning the state championship for the 2nd year running, the first time in almost 50 years that this has been achieved. Teyah and Ragan also achieved a fantastic result, finishing in third place overall. The overall Championship Results were as follows: 1st – Seaking, Aiden Duthie & Hayden Lewis (SoPYC) 2nd – Pineapple Monday, Ollie Roodhouse & Zac Bruce (GBYC) 3rd - Seas The Day, Teyah Duthie & Regan Sommerville (SoPYC) Selected others: 11th - Cleopatra, Renee Keating & Calyn Reid 18th - Salacia, Georgette Keating & Alex Reid

Training for the pelicans continues on a Wednesday afternoon and Sunday morning before racing in the afternoon. If anyone has or knows of, any budding juniors aged between 8 and 14, that enjoy a challenge and would like to sail with a group of skylarking but competitive pelican sailors please feel free to contact the pelican section via email at:pelican.sopyc@gmail.com or call Lynden Duthie on 0448 077 019. LASER Orange Power Finally. ILCA has declared Sunday, 1 April 2018 to be the first International Orange Laser Day in recognition of the role these much maligned icons have played in establishing the Laser as a global phenomenon. It's about time, as orange Lasers still get no respect. On the internet orange is the new blonde. Here's just a sample: How do you double the resale value of an orange Laser? Buy a new mainsheet. *Ba dum tss*. What do you get when you cross an orange Laser with a velum grey Laser? Nothing, orange Lasers never cross velum grey Lasers. *Ba dum tss* An orange Laser walks into a bar. Bartender says, "Yellow. What can I get you?" *Ba dum tss* Heard about the Military's latest invisible stealth weapon? It's a yellow Laser that's fast†.‡ *Ba dum tss* What's the difference between an orange Laser and an orange? An orange has a peel. *Ba dum tss* Did you hear about the orange Laser accused of sexual harassment? It was caught singlehanded in a broad reach. *Ba dum tss* Now, you take my orange Laser... no really, take it! *Ba dum tss*. Thanks, thanks so much, you've been great. Really. *for Ba dum tss sound effect this link refers: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObpcGNCU944) †Ask Lewis "Dave" Arndt for an explanation of this joke. ‡There exist in the general population individuals unable to differentiate the colours yellow and orange. These two jokes are meant to ensure inclusion for any members of the SoPYC Laser fleet that may be similarly afflicted. But seriously folks, orange Lasers have been around since December 1970 when Bruce Kirby built the very first legal Laser in the colour tangerine, later known as awful orange. Here at the club we are fortunate to have actual pioneering early adapters of orange Lasers like this groovy dude with the 80's mo and aviator sunnies sporting the latest polyester trackie daks. You can almost feel the disco beat. Btw, that's a yellow life jacket. Y-e-l-l-o-w for those colour challenged out there. Note the hi-tech cotton mainsheet and premium grog, $2.79 a six-pack at the time.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." What a season so far! Opening day was drifter and the last Sunday prior to the break was blown out. But for most of the Sundays in between, the wind stayed comfortably in the teens with lots of shifts to keep things interesting. The On the Water Group (OWG) has run the new trapezoid course starting sequences through several iterations attempting to keep those floating gin palaces with their circulating cheese platters, sorry I mean Flying Fifteens, out of the Lasers' orbit with steadily improving results.

Dave Cup Regatta Re-Launch? From its humble origins in 2014 with office supply sourced DIY kit boats provided by Dave Glover and milk bottle cap based plastic Opti replicas that all swamped just like the real things, to the sleek, performance at any cost 0.4 Meter development class specials of the following years, the Dave Cup was a spectacle not to be missed. Sadly the format lapsed after non-Dave Club (DC) members had the temerity to win three regattas in a row. Kirsty Heiner the first year and Steve McFarland sweeping the next two. This despite the overwhelming home advantage enjoyed by DC members' local knowledge of winds and tides on Dave Waters off the Royal Dave Yacht Club (RDYC). Today, with their highly anticipated plans for world domination wallowing like a Laser on Gage Roads without a transom plug, DC spokesperson Dave "The Dr" Luketina has announced a return to DC roots with a re-launch of the Dave Cup Regatta. The new venue is the basin off the beach at what is once again known as South of Perth YC following the RDYC's failed hostile takeover and rebadging as South of Dave YC. And rather than risk another humiliating debacle in the 0.4 Meter class, the event will be held in Optis. Contingent on the attempt to cut a key for the Opti boat shed from the wax impression obtained by bribing a Junior Member with a Streets Cornetto Classic.

Or this Tom Selleck look alike, now a respected Dave Club prospect and events director, out for a sail with afterguard Pepe. Check out the traveller tension, clew tie down and sophisticated upside down 2:1 vang. Both pictures are state of the art circa 1983, the year Alan Bond out-manoeuvred the NYYC for possession of the Americas Cup.

What won't have changed is the honour and prestige of winning Sailings' orangiest perpetual trophy, affectionately known as the "Mouldy Auld Cup". Pictured again for those who missed the Feb-Apr 2017 Soundings article describing the history of the trophy. And to help scrape together enough content to get through this column in what has been an especially tough news quarter given the holiday interruption and missing the last Laser Tree scuttlebutt session prior to deadline on account of the afore mentioned blown out Multiple Race Day Series 7 on 17-Dec-17.

(above) Luke's attempt to fit Laser Tree 60L esky into a 50L car

In the Club Championships at Race 6 Dave "F8 Train" Whait and Richo are sitting at equal first points in the Standards with Dave currently ahead of his arch nemesis on count back. Dave Luketina is momentarily way out front in the Radials only because Oliver, Gerry, Alec, Connor Shaw, and Lewis all missed two races that haven't dropped out of the count yet. Michael Compton enjoys a narrow margin in the 4.7s.

Dedication to the cause Featured above is a tetraptych of Luke's attempts to fit a Laser Tree 60L esky into a 50L car. It's understood the last picture turned out to be the only successful work around, assumed to require Luke sitting on the sunroof opening and steering with his feet while using cruise control and intelligent brake assist. Nice effort, Luke. Worthy of honorary membership in the Dave Club. Steve McFarland Laser Fleet Scribe (right) Sailings' orangiest perpetual trophy, affectionately known as the "Mouldy Auld Cup".

"All the Fake News, all the time".

Results for the Pre Holiday's season By popular demand from Club sailors who identify as regatta chasing negative, the OWG has re-introduced fixed mark races for days when competing Laser activities are being held outside SoPYC. Not the Voyages of Discovery of Olde that featured a killer 2 hour beat to Blackwall Reach, followed by two laps around Kings Park then a finish at the Main Jetty Start/Finish box after rounding a blue day buoy set under the Riverton Bridge. Instead, there's a compact set of sausages and triangles for each of four likely wind directions all centrally located in Melville Water. Well done, OWG!

Season 2017/18 SWAN RIVER SAILING EVENTS

The 29-Oct-17 Musto Sail Fremantle siphoned off a number of Lasers, and rain and memories of the old fixed mark courses took care of the rest with exactly two Lasers at the start, Dave "Over" Glover and Richo finishing in that order on handicap. For some reason the 26-Nov-17 International Classes Regatta at RFBYC proved less of a diversion and a combined total of 13 Standards and Radials made the start. Ryk "Viking" Batley in Radials and Richard "Warren" Kay in Standards took line honours on handicap. Multiple race scores at 16 races with 2 drops have Cinderellastory-came-from-nowhere Glenn Thomas leading the Standards. Just kidding, actually Glenn has been with the SoPYC Laser Fleet for more years than Lasers have Death Rolls. It's just that experience leads to wisdom, and wisdom to circumspection on days gusting over 25kts. At least with some. Which knocks holes in the standings. Others rig up and attempt Laser water speed records. Just proves how uncommon common sense really is. Oliver Pabbruwe leads in the Radials and Caitlin Shaw in the 4.7 fleet.

On the 25th and the 26th of November, 7 of our sailors went to RFBYC for the International Classes Regatta. The event was well visited with 11 of Singapore’s top sailors coming over to participate in a 36 strong fleet. The sailors sailed in a large variety of weather conditions during this regatta with some windy and chaotic winds (lots of capsizes) with gusts up to 29 knots and some very light winds. Only the best sailors who could sail in all kinds of weather would do well in this regatta. The Singaporeans shone, stealing 1st and 2nd. Toby settled for a 3rd after a tie and Aaron got 5th with some pretty inconsistent results. The results for the rest of the South of Perth sailors were: Andrew 16th, Isaac 18th, Ona 20th, Pol 26th and Charlie 29th.

Sail Freo Sail Freo is always an exciting event when sailors from all over WA gather at Fremantle Sailing Club for a two-day regatta. This event is consistently well visited with sailors as young as 8 to over 50 years old. And although this event is usually very exciting, it was not the case this year. The frigid weather with the added wind chill made this event not as enjoyable. SoPYC sent 8 of our best sailors to participate in a fleet of 21. This produced some exceptional results, some inconsistent results, and some... not as good results? Toby proved strong in the heavy conditions finishing first after 8 exhausting races with a picket fence result. The results for the rest of the fleet were: Aaron 5th, Andrew 8th, Ona 10th, Charlie 11th, Kai 13th, Isaac 16th and Pol 17th.

Waioda Team Racing On a cool November Sunday morning, optimist sailors from many different clubs gathered at South of Perth Yacht Club for the

40

annual WAIODA Team Racing Championship. Altogether, there were 10 teams: HYC; RFBYC 1, 2 & 3; RPYC 1, 2 & 3; SoPYC 1, 2 & 3. After collecting the team ribbons, rigging up and having a quick briefing, the sailors launched, ready for some intense racing. After the qualifying series 4 teams went through to the semis: RFBYC 1, RFBYC 2, RPYC 1 & SoPYC 1. The teams battled it out in a best of three semi finals, but only RFBYC 1 and SoPYC 1 made it through to the grand finals leaving RFBYC 2 and RPYC 1 to fight for third. In the end, SoPYC 1 (Toby, Andrew, Aaron and Emerson) remained undefeated, beating the smurfs and getting 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all races. Although the regatta was a competitive event, it was also a fun event and everyone had a great experience and learnt heaps. And if the sailing wasn’t good enough, the sausages definitely were (Thanks to Glenda Coote and Shirley Ngu). The positions for each team were: by Aaron Teo

GRAND SPONSORS REPORT I'm very happy to be able to take up the position of Chair of Grand Sponsors for this season. There are several events in which our Sponsors can participate throughout the season, where they can network, meet our Flag Officers and enjoy the great facilities the club has to offer. This season kicked off with the annual Sundowner, where guests were able to mingle over drinks in the marquee and enjoy a beautiful sunset over the river. We were fortunate to have Matt Jerwood as our speaker. Matt is currently travelling the world as part of Redline Racing's Match Racing team, and is a fantastic example of how the funding that is possible through our Grand Sponsor's scheme can help our young talented sailors rise through the ranks to become successful professional sailors. Matt's story was fascinating and there were lots of questions for him from the group. Special awards were presented to Colin Cowden (Cowden Insurance Brokers) and Brian Kerman (Kerman Construction) who celebrated 20 years as Grand Sponsors. It was a pleasure to meet the Sponsors and I look forward to our next event, a boat cruise where we will be able to enjoy some match racing close up at the Little Wheel Regatta in March. ~ Cally Browning

SUMMER SAILING RUNDOWN start on the 9th February in Queensland and the group has been training hard so best of luck! We are passionate about staying at the forefront of the sport and both work regularly on the Club 29er and Nacra programs. Axel Fleet and Jack Luketina placed fifth at the 29er Nationals and 6th at the Youth Nationals after only sailing together for ten months. The Australian 29er sailors are renowned for being the best in the world so these are very top results for their first Nationals together. The Club was well represented in the Nacra fleet with two teams, Shannon Dalton and Daniel Brown finishing 3rd at the Nationals and 7th at the Youth Nationals. Georgia Payne and Kai Colman finished 8th in both regattas after only teaming together a month beforehand. The Nacra sailors are now preparing themselves for the Worlds to be sailed in Barcelona at the end of April.

It doesn’t get much better than spending your weekends sailing during the Summer when you live in Perth and you get to sail on Melville Water in the strong sea breezes. Tessa has spent the last three weeks coaching in Queensland for the Australian Sailing National and Youth Championships, and although it was a prodctive time away sailing in testing conditions with light wind, thunder storms and strong currents, it’s great to be back home. Going away gives you a greater appreciation of how amazing our Club is and how lucky with our with our weather and water space to sail. In the On Water Group we’ve been working hard on our Summer learn to sail programs. We have had 49 great groups of kids, teenagers and adults come through the Tackers, Hobie Wave and Keelboat programs and our lead instructors Alex Landwher and Josh Edwards have kept the programs going strong while the National regattas have been on. In the junior classes our Optimist green and intermediate sailors have continued training over the Summer holidays and most of our open sailors travelled to Queensland for the Nationals. Aaron Teo placed the top WA sailor, finishing 15th overall out of 135 open fleet Optis.

In our youth classes, we had strong representation at both the Nationals and Youth Nationals amongst our Laser fleets. Ben Walkemeyer, our Club Laser coach, travelled with the sailors and did an outstanding job coaching Michael Compton to win the 4.7 Youth Nationals and Stefan Elliot-Shircore to place 3rd in a really competitive fleet. All of our sailors had stand out races in the strong winds, all of their hiking training has paid off! The Masters Laser Nationals

50

The Vipers sailed the Rumble on the Reach Regatta and have had some practice race training sessions in preparation for the Worlds to be held at the club, from the 17 to 23 February. Some of the Redline Racing team and Off The Beach sailors have got a ride on boats for the Worlds and is great to see the integration within the Club. The Little Wheel Regatta has been redesigned with the goal of encouraging all sections within the Club to race against each other in a Match Racing format. The first race day is the February 9 and the event runs over four Fridays with the final being on March 23. We encourage all members to bring friends and family down to enjoy a social evening of entertaining Match Racing. Overall the Club is in good spirits and everyone is busy maximising the time on the water. Mikael Lundh & Tessa Parkinson
