50th Anniversary Summit Jamie Rasmussen, Senior Pastor: Church in Laodicea Single offsite service to be held at WestWorld of Scottsdale

There has been much prayer, teamwork, and preparation to make this year extra special. People from across the church’s many ministries contributed to write the 366 messages of encouragement compiled in the commemorative devotional Renew, available in the bookstore. We have fifty short-term mission teams going out this year to extend the Gospel across the globe. We are planning fifty days and fifty hours of prayer. We are organizing a series of Service Saturdays on the last weekend of each month where we will be the hands, feet, and voice of Jesus to the community immediately around the church campus. While all this (and much, much more) is taking place, on the pages in each issue of The Compass this year , we will be recounting the wonderful history of God’s grace shown to Scottsdale Bible. We will revisit our beloved pastors. We will recount tales of God launching ministries and missions through the church. We will share stories of provision, of miracles, of faithfulness, of hope. While it will be impossible to tell every story of all that God has done over the past 50 years, we will tell many of them. If you don’t see a story that needs to be told, I want to encourage you to add your voice to the proverbial “chorus of praise” of testimonies. We have added a special section to our website where we are compiling your stories. I am already looking forward to reading what you have to share – how you’ve seen God move and how you have been blessed through Scottsdale Bible. Please share your story at ScottsdaleBible.com/50th

ach week, the Scottsdale Bible Church campus buzzes with the intentional activity of its several thousand adults and children who worship in one of its seven campus venues. Together, these humble people explore the Word of God and serve in ministries that cover the region and extend across the globe. For the newcomer, a first glance can seem overwhelming with all that is taking place. However, the ongoing effort of this large and growing congregation is to stay true to its modest origins that were born fifty years ago, which have been preserved through the decades because of three consistent commitments.

Holding High the Word of God Thirteen people agreed that God was moving in them to begin a work that would meet the spiritual needs of the people of East Phoenix and Scottsdale. On January 28, 1962, this small group began meeting as Scottsdale Bible Church. Within six months, the church had called their first pastor, Dr. Jim Borror, to shepherd the congregation. From its inception, Scottsdale Bible honored the Bible as God’s Holy Word and taught it with authority, conviction, and enthusiasm. Even in its early days as the growing congregation moved from a home to a high school to a women’s club to the Scottsdale Masonic Lodge, the church exalted Jesus Christ as Lord and emphasized spiritual maturity through the study of God’s Word. “You want to have a church with a lot of activities. You want to have a church that has good music. You want to have a church aware and committed to evangelism. But somehow those things have to radiate out of a central core of commitment to the Word and the solid teaching of that Word,” said Bill Epley, former worship pastor. When the church built its first sanctuary in 1965 near Kiva Elementary on McDonald Drive, it followed immediately by building an education building to equip church members. Within five years of the church’s birth, it called its first full-time youth pastor (and second senior pastor in 1970), Dr. Sherrill Babb. The love that God instilled in Scottsdale Bible for teaching His Word resulted in the church starting Scottsdale Christian Academy in 1968. The school’s reputation for excellent biblically based education quickly spread,

resulting in rapid growth that allowed the school to become independent by 1972. The church’s 10th anniversary year also welcomed Dr. Don Sunukjian as the senior pastor. The church was outgrowing its facilities, with groups meeting in homes around the surrounding community, holding multiple worship services each week, and even gathering for a time in Saguaro High School’s auditorium. To accommodate the rapidly increasing number of people responding to the faithful teaching of God’s word, Scottsdale Bible made the bold faith decision in 1974 to purchase nearly 20 acres on the corners of Shea & Miller on the outer edge of Scottsdale, where the roads were yet to be paved. “We had a groundbreaking service. We weren’t sure we were on the right piece of property! We knew we were ¼ mile east of Scottsdale Road, but nothing was out there!” said Archie Wright, who served on the Board of Elders. Five years later in 1979, the campus opened to welcome the more than 700 people who called Scottsdale Bible Church their spiritual home. Demonstrating His sovereignty, God sustained the Scottsdale Bible family for 18 months with an assortment of excellent Bible teachers for the extended season that church leadership searched for God’s successor to Dr. Sunukjian, who had accepted a position at Dallas Theological Seminary. “The shocking part of that transition was the church grew almost 40%. We had outstanding guest speakers, and God kept bringing people into our church body. We were praying for just the right man who we thought would have gray hair and vast experience. Instead, God brought a 31 year-old who was ready to take us into our next season of ministry, “ said Ron Goble, Chairman of the Board during the transition. 1981 announced the arrival of Dr. Darryl DelHousaye as senior pastor. The church was blessed by multiplying growth throughout the 25 years of his faithful leadership marked by dynamic biblical teaching. In 1988, in partnership with other Valley churches, Phoenix Seminary was launched and established its offices at Scottsdale Bible. In 1997, Dr. DelHousaye was named President of the Seminary, while continuing to serve as the church’s senior

pastor. Through the 80s and 90s, the church continued to receive God’s favor, and experienced leaps and bounds growth, eventually ministering to several thousand people each week. “The key was to release people to selfless service. God would move in their hearts to meet a need and start a ministry. We would give them support, but tell them ‘It’s your egg. You laid it, you hatch it.’ We empowered people to follow their gifting, the ministry just kept increasing,” said Pastor Darryl. “Para-church organizations were launched, special needs ministries, inner-city ministries, counseling ministries and so many others were started because people in our body saw a need and met it.”In 2006, Dr. DelHousaye became the full-time Phoenix Seminary President, and also accepted the role of Pastor Emeritus at Scottsdale Bible. In this time of transition, church leadership continued its habit of biblical excellence, naming Dr. Larry Anderson as interim pastor while undertaking a nation-wide search for the church’s next senior pastor. Dr. Anderson served with distinction in the interim, and currently serves as Senior Pastor of North Bible Church, one of Scottsdale Bible’s many church starts. God led Scottsdale Bible leaders in 2007 to Chagrin Falls, Ohio, to identify Jamie Rasmussen as Senior Pastor. Pastor Jamie continues the esteemed tradition of quality biblical teaching in the church’s multiple weekly worship venues. He has built an unparalleled staff of pastors and ministry leaders that equip the church body to live and serve according to the transformational Word of God. With more than 6,000 adults and 2,000 children, Scottsdale Bible marches forth with its ongoing commitment to uncompromisingly teach the Word of God to a world desperately in need of their Savior, Jesus. “We want to move into the next 50 years building on the foundation of what we have been given, to be known as a people of unwavering faith, creating community and growing spiritually, and serving others because of our love for Jesus Christ. We want the next 50 years to be equally relevant in carrying the gospel into the world,” said Pastor Jamie.

50 years… A Call to Honor Our Pastors

_____________

R

emember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith… for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Hebrews 13:7, 17b As Scripture calls us to remember our leaders, we will honor the six senior pastors God called to faithfully teach His Word at Scottsdale Bible Church for the last half-century. Throughout 2012, each publication of The Compass will feature an interview with one of Scottsdale Bible’s six senior pastors. As we honor the men God ordained to lead our church, we will learn about each pastor’s tenure; their victories, joys and challenges. We’ll look back at how God worked in the lives of these men and subsequently the church, their personal walk with the Lord, how He called them to minister, and how He led them to their present work for His Kingdom. Each pastor will return to the pulpit to teach on one of the seven churches from Revelation. This Compass features Dr. James Borror, Scottsdale Bible Church’s first pastor.

The Calling… Upon graduation from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1961, Jim Borror became interim pastor at Phoenix’s Biltmore Bible Church for the summer. That fall, having returned to Dallas to resume his education, his phone rang. Dr. Borror recalled, “Thirteen people from Biltmore Bible wanted to start a church in Scottsdale. Gifford Runyon asked me to be their pastor, I said, ‘No’ several times.” Yet, Gifford and his wife Harriet persisted and sent Jim roundtrip tickets to Scottsdale with a note that read, “Just come see.” Dr. Borror flew to Scottsdale and attended a service with the thirteen, who had been meeting since the first Sunday in January, 1962. “We spent a week in Scottsdale and went home to pray about it. I felt a definite leading by God to go,” he said. In July of 1962, Jim, wife Norma and two-year-old Bethany, left Dallas and came to be pastor of Scottsdale Bible Church. “He didn’t start out with baby-food either, right from the beginning he preached the truth. I still remember some of his sermons to this day,” Harriet said.

In the Beginning… After a few years of meeting in a Masonic Lodge, the first building to be named Scottsdale Bible Church was built on McDonald Drive, east of Scottsdale Road. “The architect, Benny Gonzales, suggested placing three crosses in front of the church. We liked the idea,” Dr. Borror said. Fifty years later, the three crosses continue as the landmark and logo for Scottsdale Bible Church.

Early Growth… “In those early years,” he said, “the church grew fantastically! I had little to do with it. It was like riding a runaway horse; I just tried holding onto the reigns. Every Sunday was a growth Sunday; it was exhilarating how many people came to know the Lord! “High school and college students brought friends weekly and they all sat in the front row! The Lord prompted me to teach youth, and I asked the Board to allow me more time with them and less time preparing for sermons. That year, I took the students on many outings and simultaneously taught them about the Lord. “A year later, I went to Dallas Seminary in search of a youth pastor. Three days passed and the Lord kept saying, ‘No, not this one.’ I was so disappointed. On the last day I met Sherrill Babb, and the Lord said, ‘Yes, this one.’ Sherrill became our first youth pastor and ultimately was named Scottsdale Bible’s senior pastor.”

Early Scottsdale Bible Q & A with Dr. Borror: Q: What were some of your victories? A: T he youth grew in huge numbers and they were excited about the Lord! Q: H ow did you see God at work in the church? A: He brought so many people to know Him. Almost every Sunday people responded to the gospel. Q: How did God grow you? A: Through hard work that took me outside of my comfort zone. I called and visited a lot of people. This was new to me, but the Lord blessed and grew me through the great people I met and the joy in watching their growth in the Lord. Q: What challenges did you face? A: I t was challenging to keep things in a biblical perspective while growing so fast. But it was fun; I enjoyed preaching the Word because people were hungry and eager. Q: Who were some instrumental people? A: Gifford and Harriet Runyon, John and Claudia Damiani and Joe and Geraldine Smith were all instrumental in our church growth. These men were the first elders and always gave wise counsel.

Because of the anticipated enthusiasm and participation, we will be having two identical services at 6 & 8pm. This will be an all-church worship night where our congregation will come together in a spirit of unity and “journey” through the life of Scottsdale Bible’s strong music and worship heritage over the past 50 years. Many of our previous worship leaders and pastors, including Dr. Bill Epley, Dr. Ed Wilmington, Steve Hickock, Sean Johnson and Kim Larson, will be joining our current Worship and Arts staff for this special event, along with a tribute to John W. Peterson. That night, we will have the opportunity to experience God together as we worship through different musical eras in our 50 year history, and also look forward with anticipation to what the Lord has planned for Scottsdale Bible’s future.

Intentionally Serving Others Missionary Support From its start, Scottsdale Bible has understood its mission to tell others about Jesus and serve others in His name. The church selected and supported seven missionaries in its first year, establishing a strong foundation upon which a legacy of global outreach has been built. Hundreds of full-time missionaries have been sent out with the faithful support of Scottsdale Bible, including the 55 families currently serving in 22 countries.

Missions Involvement With a commitment to the Great Commission, hundreds of teams have been sent out into the world with the Gospel message. Over the history of Scottsdale Bible, the church has sent thousands of people to the continents of North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceana. “It is life-changing to go serve on a short-term mission. When you stand in a village in Mairowa and give a bowl of food to a child and share Bible stories with them, you’ll never be the same,” said Fred Beasley, pastor of global outreach.

Inclusive Ministry Involvement The legacy of Scottsdale Bible is rich. “When you come on the campus of Scottsdale Bible, you’re touched by God. It’s not just in the head. It’s in the heart. And you sense, you feel the presence of the Lord, you feel love for the people and how they care for each other,” said elder Tim Kimmel. God’s manifested blessings upon this congregation are too numerous to number, although we will spend the next year covering them. A key to God’s continued favor has been in the congregation’s ongoing commitment to inclusive ministry. Scottsdale Bible’s established biblical standard of elder leadership has allowed the church to thrive, even through extended periods of searching for its next senior pastor. Faithful leadership, consistent pastoral guidance, empowerment of people to serve where God has called them, and inclusive ministry have all resulted in a church that is fresh, alive, and looking forward on its fiftieth anniversary. God has rewarded this church with a consistent sense of His molding presence as He continues to use us for His Kingdom’s greater glory. Even as the congregation of Scottsdale Bible remembers in all that God has accomplished in fifty years, and rejoices in the great deeds done in Christ’s name, it renews its commitment to be a church that holds high the Word of God, that intentionally serves others, and faithfully includes the family of faith in the work of God’s mission. Join us as we celebrate God’s faithfulness to us this year as we renew our commitment to Him to be the church body He has called us to be.

cottsdale Bible Church’s 50 th Anniversary will be a yearlong prayer of thanksgiving to God for all He has done in us and through us as a body of believers. This year, we will express our gratitude by going out to our community and sharing the love of Christ by serving others in meaningfilled ways. Scottsdale Bible will offer Service Saturdays on the last Saturday of each month. Each Service Saturday features a variety of ways for you, your family, or your small group to serve other people within a 5-mile radius of the church campus. Devote your afternoon to making an impact on others by meeting real needs in simple ways. Saturday, January 28, is the first Service Saturday where we will take the love God has shown us to our neighbors in Scottsdale. Come for a brief preparation session at 1:00 pm in Room E105 to split into groups and understand how to take our message into our community. From there, we will disburse to six different service projects nearby our church campus, where we will be the hands and feet of Jesus to our hurting community. January opportunities include: • Going to Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Campus to find people to pray with and take food to them. • Going into the neighborhood that surrounds the church campus to show our care and gratitude to our neighbors. • Visiting Elder Care facilities on Shea. • Going to Scottsdale Cocopah Middle School and reaching out to area little league teams. • Visiting Sundown Plaza businesses. Afterward, we will return to the church for a pizza dinner and celebration how God used us in our service. It has been said, “No one cares what we know until they know how much we care.” We want our neighbors to feel loved by us, so they will sense how much God loves them.

SENIORS Visitation

When was the last time you felt like you really made a big difference in the world – and all without costing you a dime – for just a couple hours of your time? When was the last time you felt that wonderful blessing sweep over your soul because you had visited someone who was sick, and remembered that Jesus said, “Whenever you do this to the least of these – you do it to me.” (Matthew 25: 40) A few months ago I had the opportunity to be blessed greatly when I went to the home of an elderly woman who had been essentially bedridden because of illness. This woman was not my mother, my aunt or any other relation, although she could have been. However, she was somebody’s mother, sister and grandmother. Her family lived out of state, and here she was miles away from her family, and just home from the hospital. I had never met this woman before, but I knew that she was a member of our church, and that she needed someone to just stop by and visit, to chat, to let her know that others cared. As I left her house, after our visit, I knew that God had blessed us both that day. The Visitation Ministry at Scottsdale Bible Church gives us all a chance to serve the Kingdom. It is designed to show God’s love to all who need prayer, comfort, friendship and love in times of need. This ministry is an outreach to not only our church congregation, but also to our neighbors, relatives and friends. If you know someone who might need a visit (hospital, care/rehab center or in-home), or if you would like to learn more about how you can serve in this ministry, contact Joyce Graham at 480-824-7334. I am reminded of something I was told a long time ago in another ministry: “The key is to pray and go, don’t worry about your qualifications.” God calls those who are willing to GO. TALES FROM THE TOUR

PHOENIX OPEN OUTREACH EVENT MONDAY JANUARY 30TH, 7:00 pm @ THE BIRDS NEST–TPC SCOTTSDALE

Jay Budzien Scottsdale Bible Member

E

ven though I love golf, driving to downtown Phoenix on a Monday evening, after a long day in the office, was not something I really wanted to do, even with golf as the focus. Today, I thank the Lord that my wife Mary encouraged me to go hear some “Tales from the Tour.” That night, at the last minute, off we went. For me, it resulted in a series of events that could only be orchestrated by God Himself, a series of events that changed my life! Here’s my story… My wife Mary and I attended that first event in 2009 when it was held at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix. The evening was so enjoyable and I was truly inspired by listening to these great athletes and speakers explain how their faith in Christ shaped and directed their lives, helping them to put their victories and their defeats into true perspective. It wasn’t their many wins, or their ranking on the money list, that defined who they were. Rather, their faith and their relationship with Christ and others was their own true measure of success. Before leaving, I entered a raffle and was contacted the next day that I had won an autographed Tom Lehman golf bag. I had never won a raffle before, let alone the grand prize! The plan was to have the bag mailed to me, which of course would have ended the story there. But for some curious reason, Hugh Illsley (who I had never met) decided to personally deliver it. He invited me to join a men’s group. I reluctantly accepted, because in the past, small groups “were not my thing.” But this seemed different. And different it was, to say the least! The weekly discussions have changed me. Hugh, his family, and many other wonderful guys have become my best friends. Guys that have encouraged me, been there for me, held me accountable, and even at times have “kicked me in the pants” when I deserved it. And most importantly, I became a true “believer,” believing and receiving Jesus into my life as my Lord. Some months later, my daughter Katherine also received Jesus as her Lord and Savior, inspired by her dad’s great friends. Today, I am blessed to help organize these annual Tales from the Tour events that bring guys like me to a safe, fun “non-church” environment, to hear the testimonies of Christian professional golfers . Tales from the Tour is a men’s Christian Outreach Ministry. This year, you are invited to the free event at the Waste Management Phoenix Open sponsored by Tales from the Tour. Come and hear inspirational stories from PGA professionals discussing life on the Tour and how their faith in Jesus Christ impacts their lives, both on and off the golf course. This is an evening for the entire family and for non-golfers alike. Bring your entire family, and be sure to invite your friends who do not yet know the Lord. Anyone you know who likes to golf, to watch golf, or even just enjoys sports or the outdoors will enjoy this great event. By coming, they may just discover like I did that their lives may never be the same!

A Mother

& Daughter Who Serve

S

andy and Rayne are a mother and daughter team who teach some of four-year-old children each Sunday morning. Sandy felt God leading her to teach in October of 2010, after Rayne began volunteering as a classroom helper on Sunday. For Sandy, the greatest blessing in serving with Rayne is witnessing how the two of them together can see God’s Word being written on the hearts of the children. However, she’s enjoyed the unexpected blessing of seeing her relationship with her daughter grow stronger. While some middle school kids want to distance themselves from their parents, Rayne & Sandy have grown closer through the time spent together lovingly teaching preschoolers. “When I teach my 4-year olds, I know God is working on Rayne’s heart and His Word is being reinforced in her as well. It is wonderful to share something of eternal value as we work together,” Sandy said. Sandy begins her preparation for each lesson by praying for God to lead her to say what He wants her to say and present the week’s lesson in a way that is easily understood and applicable to the children. She

also prays that God prepares their hearts to receive whatever He has for them that week. “As I teach, I feel the Holy Spirit working through me,” she said. “The kids are captivated! It is so rewarding when I tie the present lesson to the previous week’s lesson and the kids are able to remember what they learned!” Rayne has a heart for spotting shy children in need of extra attention and love. She knows just how to soothe anxious little hearts. She also supports her mom by redirecting kids back to the lesson when they are distracted. Occasionally, Sandy’s 9-yr-old son, Enzo, helps in their classroom, too. Enzo leads the class in prayer, plays with the kids, and generally helps out in any way needed. ________________________________________________________ We are so thankful for volunteers like Sandy, Rayne, and Enzo who give their hands and hearts to serving Jesus by teaching our children His Good News! my story for His Glory M

y name is Krista Cooper, a rare native Arizonan! At seventeen, I hoped to leave my shameful past and shattered faith behind me, but foolish attempts to fill my void with worldly promises led me through pain and destruction.

My breaking point was a year and a half ago. In rededicating myself to Jesus Christ, His healing hands freed me from deceitful chains that kept me captive for years! God faithfully redeemed my past, making even the ugliest parts of my story work out for my good and His glory. Through this journey God revealed a passion for youth ministry, leading me to serve on IMPACT staff as a co-leader

for a group of seventh grade ladies who bless me beyond belief! Loving these girls has softened my heart, tested my patience, influenced my prayer life, and made me a different follower of Christ. I remind them that I am also a sinner who has made a lot of mistakes. Enduring pain and suffering was worth it to gain wisdom to speak truth to them. I love and encourage them, hold them accountable, and exhort them to model a life above reproach. I take my calling seriously and hope to be used to make even a small difference in the lives of our youth, and I encourage everyone to serve in the unique way the Lord leads.

SMALL GROUPS Why Small Groups?

Growing in Christian faith and love doesn’t happen on your own – it happens in community. God has created you to be in meaningful relationships with other Christ-followers. Small groups provide a simple yet effective environment for developing these relationships within the church. The Christian life can be compared to a life-long journey of growing in your knowledge and love of God. We know that people come to our church at various stages in that journey, as well as having unique needs and experiences. So we offer different types of groups for different types of people. In the following pages, you will find explanations of the various types of groups that we offer at Scottsdale Bible. No matter your age, gender, life stage, or spiritual maturity, we have a group that will fit you. Please look over the pages to find a group that is best for you and take the initiative to connect into that group. There are two easy ways you can register for one of these groups.

1. Attend our Small Group Connecting Event on January 15 @ 6:30pm in the Town Centre. 2. E mail or call the appropriate contact person listed for that group.

S

Jeff Kellen My wife and I opened our home to a small group at the beginning of the Embrace Grace series in the beginning of 2011. We had been attending Scottsdale Bible Church for a year and a half and had not really connected. The small group experience has been great! We look forward to each Saturday night along with our kids. It is a highlight of the weekend to be able to have friends over and enjoy each other’s company as we dig into the Word. The small group experience has allowed us to meet some great people and has really given us a feeling of being connected into something wonderful. It has been a blessing to us this past year, and we look forward to continuing the group for 2012 and anticipate more enriching experiences to come.

Chris and Laura Rennie

Roy Bowers Our small group began meeting in January of last year. We did not know one another prior to that time and were diverse in age, backgrounds, and religious experiences. What we had in common was a Zip Code and a desire to grow closer to the Lord. Since that time, however, our small group has become our own “church family” and has truly been a blessing. We have together created an environment where we can share our victories, our trials, and our mistakes in safety and without concern for criticism. Our diversity has allowed each of us to learn from one another and to broaden our perspectives. What a joy it has been for us to encourage one another in applying what we have studied to each other, our family members and neighbors, and then to see how it has strengthened and even repaired relationships. Our small group experience has been a tremendous avenue for us to “love, learn, and do.” It has also encouraged us to be much more proactive in reaching out to others in the community. If we have a “secret” beyond our desire to grow in the Lord, it is in our commitment to the Group in time, participation and in our transparency. By being open in terms of what is going on in our lives we can truly be there to encourage and help one another, and to grow closer to the Lord in the process.

The blessing of being in a small group has been an invaluable experience for several reasons. The most important of which is having the opportunity to spend more in depth time studying the Word. This study time has been essential to both my knowledge of the Bible but also my growing relationship with Christ. As a young man trying to live a life pleasing to God, the small group has provided an excellent opportunity to meet other young adults who are also looking to lead Christ-centered lives. As a new member to the community, small group gave me an instant connection with individuals I can connect with socially in a way that can be difficult in today’s popular culture. My small group also gives me a solid group of people to encourage me through tough times, cheer with me through the good times, and help me grow as an individual.

NEXT STEP SMALL GROUP LEADER TRAINING

Are you currently leading a small group or would you like to lead a group in the future? We want to help you! Please join us for an interactive six-week training session covering some of the essential principles and skills of leading a small group, such as facilitating, caring for and multiplying your group, dealing with difficult people, making disciples and much more. SMALL

GROUPS COMMUNITY GROUPS

MEN’S GROUPS

Community groups are the most common small groups at Scottsdale Bible and consist of adults of all ages and life stages. They typically meet in homes throughout the Valley either weekly or bi-weekly. Group members share experiences, encouragement, prayer and support in addition to studying God’s Word together. Many participate in regular service activities together, giving members the opportunity to share God’s love and to care for others both inside and outside the walls of Scottsdale Bible.

Every Tuesday night, Ministry to Men offers a unique setting for men to meet in small groups. These groups are called “IRON” groups. Each group has a focus on becoming more like Jesus. Some of the groups are studying a book of the Bible, while others are working on certain topics or doctrine. Every group is a learning environment where discipleship is practiced. At the same time, it is also a place where friendships are forged and fellowship is encouraged. Therefore, men of all ages and backgrounds are welcomed. We play ‘hardball’ but we brake for hurting men. Our motto is “as iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17) and sometimes sparks fly, but you’ll find solid men of faith growing in grace and truth. All you need to do is show up with a Bible and pen ready to learn and grow. The Holy Spirit will do the rest!

SMALL GROUP MARRIAGE STUDIES The greatest marriages are those where both husband and wife are putting time and energy into growing significantly in their personal relationship with Christ and their marriage by putting Him at the center. These small group studies cover a variety of subjects that build relational strength, promote communication, and enhance intimacy in marriage.

“Right Church”

Young Adults Finding the

By John Paul Stepanian

T

he enchantment of the Old Laurelhurst Church was irresistible. Even more delicious to my budding collegiate mind was the scent of an emerging organic community of faith that met there. They were creative, dissatisfied with the status quo, and eager for the to penetrate the Northwest’s bastion of dangerous liberal ideology with the tranformative power of the Gospel. After moving to Portland for school, I was on a mission to find the “right church.” I had never joined the journey of a church like this one and I was entranced with the vibrancy of it all. I attempted to connect at the church by exuding the “artist persona” (horn rims, not quite tidy clothes, quirky idioms). Eventually, I couldn’t sustain the effort, which exposed the painful source of my search: I was lonely. Finding a church was easy, they were everywhere. Taking root in a church body and learning to abide together in a new context: not so much. Almost ten years passed. I’ve reflected that my search for the “right church” was both selfish and selfess. I was driven by consumerism, as much as as I was driven by a genuine desire to learn and worship with, serve, and love those who gather in the name of our Savior. As a newbie to Scottsdale Bible Church’s young adults ministry, SOMA, I have the brief privilege of an outsider’s perspective. What I’m witnessing deeply encourages me! The polarizing presence of Jesus Christ unmistakably testifies to his true message of redemption and transformation. The strength of SOMA resides not in sexy programming, the cultural epicenter of young adults gathering, or the impressive allure of powerful and professional leadership. SOMA is a group of young men and women eagerly seeking Jesus who invite others not with “wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.” I see these men and women sacrificially seeking outsiders, expressing love by sharing the truth and grace we all so desperately need, and serving Scottsdale Bible and our community with Christ’s love. These are friends eager to extend friendship because they have experienced the friendship of Jesus. Undoubtedly, the good Lord used my experience to shape me, but I wonder what my journey might have been like had my hungry roots found soil like I am witnessing at SOMA. SOMA is Scottsdale Bible Church’s ministry for young adults. We gather Sundays at 6:30pm in

Special Ministries

W

e want to ensure that people with special needs have a safe place to learn about Jesus Christ, worship together, and build community. We are intentional in our easygoing approach for all to experience His life-transforming love and grace. We have so many wonderful friends with all sorts of abilities and unique personalities in Special Ministries. SuperKids is our group of younger students and our Bible studies are much shorter due to their attention span. Adults in our classes range in age from 17-87 years old. SuperKids classes are on Sundays at 9:30, 11:15 am, and 5:00 pm We have Bible study, music, crafts, and time to play in our Sensory Room. These classes may have anywhere from two to ten students on any given Sunday. Because the teachers are well aware of the anxiety issues that may arise, we have a schedule for each step of the lesson so that students feel calmer. Plenty of volunteers are available to accompany a student if they need to take a break and leave the room for a few minutes. Special Ministry adults can visit us on Sunday mornings for Walk with Him Bible study from 9:30–10:45 am and on Thursday nights for Thursday Night Live from 6:30-8:10 p.m.; these are times of Bible study, worship, and fun. Again, we have plenty of volunteer buddies to sit with our students. We love the family environment and how much fun we have together! Our classes and events are filled with loving volunteers who joyfully come alongside our students to make them feel welcome and comfortable learning God’s word. We hope our relaxed approach with the students will allow everyone to experience Christ through the teaching and music. Special Ministries offers O.F.F. Night, “Our Fun Friday,” the first Friday of every month to offer the night “off” for parents or for the whole family to enjoy a night of fun. It’s a chance to take a night “off” from Bible study to invite friends who may not usually come to church. There are also other events throughout the year as well.

• In February we will have a Valentine Social during one of our Thursday night Bible studies, and • In March we have our Talent Show, always a favorite! • Of course we have a huge Easter Celebration in the spring during that week’s Thursday Night Live class. • And, for those snow birds heading to cooler climates as the Arizona summer begins, we hold our farewell Pool Party for all to enjoy. • One week-long camp sponsored by Special Ministries, but not including our students, is Royal Family Kids Camp for children ages 7-11 who are in the foster care system. • In mid-July we host our Summer Dance

• In August, we host a big game night. • As fall approaches, all our students are invited to head up to Whispering Hope Ranch outside of Payson for a weekend camp. • In November we have our biggest event - we invite our friends in the community and the church to come to our Carnival! • We finish the year with our annual Christmas Ball in December.

Let there be light!

L

- Fred Beasley, Pastor of Global Outreach

ast Christmas 2010 at the Winter Wonder musical I had a chance to share with you the dynamic growth of the work going on in Mairowa, Tanzania as our school, and outreach to the poor continued to meet needs in the community. At that time I asked if you would help us bring light into the darkness as this community has no electricity, and therefore, no lights once the sun goes down. Many of you graciously responded and contributed $37,000 to provide a solar system for the school and the teachers housing. In June we were able to complete the system which now provides for broader range of learning opportunities for the kids and a place at night for the teachers to read, study, and work on their lessons. You may recall that a few years ago we provided computers for the schools, but because of the lack of electricity the kids in Mairowa were unable to use them until this year. Now we have 2nd graders learning to use computers that are assisting them in learning English and advancing their training in math and other cognitive skills. In addition, one of our volunteers has been going to Mairowa for the past few years and training teachers in teaching science methods and now with the electricity they are able to use the media center and science video training tools.

Thanks for helping make the Mairowa Integrity School one of the premier primary schools in Tanzania. ______________________________________________________________

The Results Are In Every year in Tanzania all the primary students in the 4th grade take a national exam to determine the progress of each student and measure the effectiveness of the school. It has been our opinion that we have two of the best schools in Tanzania, but until this year it has only been an “opinion” and not a fact. You see, this is our first year with a fourth grade class, and hence, the first year we have been able to take the national exams and evaluate our progress relative to the national standards. Well, the results are now in for our kids in the Kondoa Integrity School and we have seen excellent results. The 4th grade class received two A’s, 31 B’s, and one C. This is very exciting as we know it is only going to get better! Keep praying for the students and the teachers as to school moves in to the 5th grade.

THINKING MARRIAGE

CONSIDER MARRIAGE PREP

STARTING FEBRUARY 4TH Many churchgoers are familiar with the disappointing statistics about marriage−that about half of all marriages end in divorce. Another alarming statistic shows that of young couples who get married in church, 80% do not continue to attend church regularly. According to the Barna Group, about 20% of those couples come back to the church when they become parents (How Parenthood Affects Church Involvement, 2010). What many are not aware of is the good news that “couples attending church together have a 6% divorce rate” (Lawler, Risch & Riley, 1999). The Marriage Ministry at Scottsdale Bible is passionate about helping young couples understand God’s marriage plan and encouraging them to establish a significant connection to our church. We offer an extensive Marriage Preparation program, designed to help dating and engaged couples appreciate and embrace God’s design for marriage and relationships. Couples attending the class are exposed to biblical foundations for marriage as well as many of the skills necessary for nurturing a thriving relationship. _____________________________________________________________________________

YOUR MAR R IAGE FITNESS CENTER A great marriage never happens by accident, but it will thrive with a vision of Christ at its center, intentional effort and by using the right tools.

god will give you the vision if you sincerely ask him for it. • You provide the intentional effort, which includes regular prayer together, education/training, fun, and the lifelong pursuit of your spouse through date nights and marriage huddles. • Your Marriage Ministry Fitness Center will provide you with fitness evaluations and tools for growth along the way.

Marriage is designed by God to create godly character in the two of us, as we pursue Him and our spouse, so that we become a grand display case for the relationship Christ has with the Church—drawing others to Him, much like our favorite store window draws us in to see and experience what we see in the display window outside.

W O R S H I PArts The Nixons Doug and Nancy Nixon joined the Worship Arts Ministry in 1985 following a move from California. After hearing Pastor Darryl DelHousaye speak at their Sacramento church, they visited Scottsdale Bible their first week in town and never went anywhere else. Both initially joined the choir until the orchestra claimed Doug for his trombone and tuba skills. Over the years, two of the couple’s children played in the orchestra as well: Jym on trombone and Shelley on French horn and percussion. Nancy and Doug were part of the Drama Ministry’s Sunday evening Café Nights performances in the 1980s, where plays and music were featured along with desserts and other goodies. Doug, who has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Biola University, also taught music during several of the summer Performing Arts camps. Nancy speaks fondly of being part of the first Worship Arts Ministry small group with John Politan as its teacher. “We praise God for how He has used John from those humble beginnings of spreading his notes out on our piano bench - always enough for 3 weeks of discussion at least!” Doug is most thankful for the fellowship of the Ministry— the “sharing, caring and burden bearing” during his many health challenges and the passing of daughter Shelley in July. “The choir and orchestra are our family and they have come along side and encouraged us at every opportunity,” he said. Nancy was greatly influenced by Worship Pastor Ed Willmington and his music. “When the choir sang Ed’s composition We All Sing Holy, the lyrics touched a place in my heart and expanded my vision of what heaven will be like,” Nancy said. “Now with three of our four parents there and our daughter as well, it is all the more precious to us.”

Bud Locker Bud first attended Scottsdale Bible in 1968 when it was located on MacDonald Drive. The Worship Arts Ministry consisted of a small choir and a pianist/organist and the senior pastor was Jim Borror. Bud was the first violinist to join the orchestra and recalls fondly that the fledgling group included less than a dozen members. Today, the orchestra has grown to nearly 60 musicians and Bud is the group’s elder statesman. In 2004, he founded the Friendly Fiddlers, a group of Scottsdale Bible violinists who bring sacred, classical and secular music into nursing homes and care facilities. Bud values the opportunity to take music out into the community. “Much of my own violin playing has been within the church and this is one time when we step outside of Scottsdale Bible and serve others—folks who spend most of their days in bed or in a wheelchair,” he said. During performances, Fiddlers introduce themselves as well as one or two of the musical selections. “This often gives us the chance to share what God is doing in our lives,” Bud said, “and to be more vocal about our faith and belief in Jesus Christ.” As a 40-year volunteer in the Worship Arts Ministry, Bud said that weekly rehearsals and Sunday mornings have made him feel like part of the Scottsdale Bible family. “I’ve gotten to know many people who I can share my life openly with and the closeness of these special friends helped overcome the problem many have with attending such a large church.”

Leah Powell In 1985, Leah and Gary Powell accepted an invitation from Elder Board Chairman, Ron Goble, to attend Scottsdale Bible, where Darryl DelHousaye was the brand new Senior Pastor. “It’s a day I won’t forget,” Leah recalls. “From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt the power of the Holy Spirit and was moved to tears multiple times during the worship service. It was a communion Sunday, and as Darryl led us into that time of worship, I knew my family had found a church home.” Two years later, under the leadership of Pastor Ed Willmington, Leah joined the Worship Arts staff and has served in a variety of capacities the past 24 years, including the adult and handbell choirs, drama ministry, Sunday morning Service Producer and Administrative Director. “Pastor Ed both modeled and taught the meaning of true worship, which changed how I—and many others in the church— worshipped each week.” The Worship Arts ministry team quickly became part of her “extended” family. Mission trips to both Argentina and Romania with the orchestra and choir were life-changing experiences—seeing God at work in the lives of believers in other parts of the world enlarged her global perspective and opened her heart to the needs of others.

Leah is as surprised as anyone that she has been on staff more than two decades—surpassed in tenure by only one other person. Most anyone you ask would tell you that she embodies the “soul” of the Worship Arts ministry, and is the linchpin for all that goes on there. “It has been remarkable to watch God bless and powerfully work through the people and all the ministries of Scottsdale Bible,” she notes. “I am so grateful to serve with such a talented and committed team. In the years ahead, I look forward to seeing how God will continue to use the Worship Arts ministry to mature people in their faith and to reach our community for Christ.”
