FALL 2011 SCOTTSDALEBIBLE.COM
Greetings!
SCOTTSDALE BIBLE 7601 East Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ 85260 480.824.7200 • www.scottsdalebible.com
If you have been coming to Scottsdale Bible Church for more than just a couple weeks in 2011, you likely have noticed our theme of Embrace Grace. You probably have heard me preach and teach about how God’s grace changes a person, transforms relationships, and shapes the mission of the church. You may have even joined a small group where, together with new friends, you’ve begun to explore grace in a new and fresh way. The more time you spend at Scottsdale Bible, the more you will encounter grace, and hopefully, the more you will experience the transformational power of God’s grace. As you read through this Fall 2011 edition of the Compass, you will see our increased focus on sharing stories of God’s grace and changed lives. Our church has long relied upon the Compass as a resource for keeping people “in the know,” and it will continue to provide that much-needed service. Moving forward, the Compass will always strive to give you that same information you need through the context of changed lives. In this issue and in those that come afterward, you will read stories about how God has used Scottsdale Bible ministries to change lives throughout the community and across the world. You will meet people who have been rescued by Jesus, people whose relationships have been rebuilt from ruins, and people who have a new, different vision for their life because of God’s grace. You’ll be inspired and encouraged by articles, devotions, and exhortations from your pastoral leadership. In all, you’ll find the Compass to be an essential resource for you at Scottsdale Bible Church.
New To
SBC?
As your pastor, I’m encouraged to see a Compass that increasingly reflects the core values of the church. The content in these pages shows our unified heart. We want every person to experience transformational Bible teaching, to become fully engaged in worship, to develop authentic community through a small group, and to become involved in outreach through serving others. I hope you’ll be more than simply informed or even entertained. I hope that as you read on, you’ll gain an ever-expanding understanding of the beautiful, colorful, world-changing grace of God. And I hope you’ll embrace grace in every part of your life. Your friend and Pastor,
Jamie Rasmussen

rescuing one soul at a time
Don’t miss this great season to embrace grace & be a part of the world-changing work of Jesus Christ
Season Four of Scottsdale Bible Church’s Embrace Grace Campaign
B
egins October 9th and culminates the year-long emphasis on God’s grace with a focus on “Grace and Your Neighbors.” In the first three seasons, Pastor Jamie Rasmussen taught how God’s grace changes a person, how his grace changes relationships, and how his grace changes the church. In this final season, he will teach how God’s grace changes the world around us. Specifically, we will explore how you can share God’s grace with others, how you can share your specific story and God’s beautiful story of grace, and how you can show compassion through serving one another under the umbrella of grace.

FALL 2011 SCOTTSDALEBIBLE.COM
As in the previous three seasons, you will have the opportunity to further develop your own opportunities to embrace grace by being a part of a small group experience that explores the themes being shared each week. If you prefer to join a small group at a home close to where you live, Scottsdale Bible offers dozens of homes where 8-12 people meet each week. If you prefer to meet with a group on site at the church, hundreds of people share a small group experience each week on Sunday nights from 5-6:30 pm or Wednesdays from 6:30–8 pm. Regardless of your preference, there is a place for you to connect with God and with others. You can sign up to be a part of a small group experience at scottsdalebible.com/embracegrace.
October 9th–November 13th
Here are three stories of people of Scottsdale Bible who Jesus has rescued
45 years ago, a family in the suburbs of Chicago invited their daughter’s playmate to AWANA clubs. My leader explained the Gospel to me and I received Christ as my Savior. I was amazed by that unconditional love and put my faith in Jesus as my Lord and Savior. My husband, Ned, and I have had the privilege of sharing our faith for 34 years and raising our now-adult children. We have been blessed to see both our children come to faith in Christ and walk with Him. –Gayle Colletti
I grew up in a Chinese family with a strong Buddhist influence. My family attended temple regularly on the weekends, however for years I struggled to find a connection with that religion. In junior high, I carpooled with my neighbors to and from school and they would always pray before and after school. Shortly thereafter I started regularly attending church with their family. I really enjoyed the activities, worship services, and praying, but most importantly I came to understand that Jesus died on the cross for my sins. I accepted Him into my heart, and from that day forward my life has never been the same. –Inning Chen
Discover a small group today at: scottsdalebible.com/embracegrace
I grew up in a vaguely Christian environment with private Christian School and Church every Sunday. However, the uptight people & sideline hypocrisy had me questioning Christianity. I remained this way until 2004 when I was dragged out to Saguaro Lake for some midnight cliff Jumping & BBQ’ing with a group of guys who were part of Campus Crusade For Christ. By their mentorship & the Father’s grace I grew to realize the weight of my sin, its only solution, and mostly importantly the necessity of telling everyone about it! If you haven’t heard, let me be the one to tell you: Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth, & The Light now & forever more! –Rory Fruhling
These are people whose destinies were changed when they embraced the grace of God. A common theme in each of their stories is that God showed them his grace through the life and witness of a friend, a spouse, a parent, or a neighbor. Each person came to faith because someone else extended God’s grace to them. And so it is with you. If you are a follower of Christ, you likely are so because of the grace-filled relationship you have with someone who introduced Jesus to you. Even now, God is placing you in relationships specifically so you can introduce him to other people with souls in need of rescue.

Tanzania Child Sponsor Tuesday, October 25, 6:30–8:30
pm
O
ne big way Scottsdale Bible Church makes an impact in Tanzania is through child sponsorship. There are currently almost 500 children being sponsored through the church. We currently have more than 100 children still in need of a loving, compassionate sponsor. This is an ideal time for you to start sponsoring a child. If you are already a sponsor, perhaps you could reach into your community and find a friend, coworker, neighbor or relative willing to partner with us and influence the life of a child. At this event, join in to hear as Pastor of Global Outreach, Fred Beasley, shares “what’s new” in Tanzania. No RSVP is necessary to bring your family and friends to this exciting evening of free activities. Enjoy delicious refreshments from recipes out of our recently published cookbook. Come and meet your Sponsor Advocate, who matches sponsors with children. You will have an opportunity to write your child a Christmas card and also provide a voluntary Christmas offering. The suggested amount is to sponsor a child $25/child per month. We hope to see every sponsor, and to welcome many new sponsors as well! You may also stop by the Outreach table in October to write a Christmas card for your child or bring one from home and drop it in our mailbox. While there, please consider writing a second card that we will address to one of these un-sponsored children who will not have someone to write a card to them this year. Together we will bring Christ’s love across the ocean.
There are currently almost
500 children
being sponsored through our church.

Refugee Ministry
—The Heart of the Matter —Mary Beth Senechal
I contacted Berta Myers in Local Ministries to Lastseespring, how my family could help serve over the summer. She told me about the family sponsorship program for refugees from the war-torn country of Burma. We had no idea what all this entailed but we were game. And so our adventure began! We immediately began collecting items needed to furnish the family’s apartment. God’s people provided just what was needed! Seeing Mya Thart and his wife Muh Tut and their four children arrive at the airport was an amazing experience. There was no way to know what they were thinking. This new world was foreign to everything they knew. They had been through so much; we were determined to make their life better. As much as we have helped not in a tangible way, but in ways that only the heart truly understands. They have blessed us right back…even more. Not in a tangible way but in ways that only the heart truly understands. We have continually felt their gratitude. It’s hard to describe how this ministry has impacted and blessed our family. Our teenage boys have begun to look outside themselves as they begin to understand the Burmese culture. One of my friends involved in the ministry told me “sometimes you just can’t be around them enough.”
y l i m a f t r a h T a My Please stop by the Outreach Ministry patio table to meet our refugee family and learn more about our Refugee Ministry.

Financial Stewardship Ministry
Word Creations
Discovery Workshop
The Bible speaks more about finances and stewardship than any other subject. At FSM we help you understand and apply biblical principles of stewardship to your life — for the glory of our Lord and to develop a stronger walk in Christ. Come learn what scripture teaches about finances, budgeting, investing, borrowing, goal-setting and stewardship. You will also receive practical tools, ideas and resources to help you get on a path of biblical stewardship and stay there. Whether you are enjoying financial well-being or struggling, single or married, small group or individuals, there is something for you. When we place our focus on the Lord and not on material things, we become better servants of Him and better stewards of the gifts that we have.
This dynamic group of Christian writers consists of men and women of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels who want to use their writing talents to proclaim Christ and glorify God. If you are interested in displaying your work, receiving feedback and encouragement, then join us on the first and third Thursday of every month in room E214 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. We look forward to meeting you and hearing what wonderful things the Lord has done in your life. We are prayerfully seeking creative ways to serve the body of Christ and our community at large with our talents. Consider walking with us as we pursue this endeavor to be lights in this world.
God has created you with the desire for a meaningful place of service in the Body of Christ. The Bible says that God has very lovingly and uniquely gifted every believer with at least one spiritual gift, a driving passion or two and a personality type that enables him or her to serve with sacrificial joy. At Scottsdale Bible, we have designed a process that will help you discover your spiritual gift(s) and find the ministry role that is the best fit for you. We call this process Discovery. One component is the Discovery Workshop, a six-hour seminar designed to help you discover and understand your spiritual gifts, passions and personality type in order to find your place of service in God’s Kingdom. We offer the Discovery Workshop several times each year on a Friday evening/Saturday morning. Our next workshop is October 21–22.

Support Group
counseling ministry T
he Counseling Ministry at Scottsdale Bible Church provides biblically based, compassionate care through professional counselors, interns, lay counselors, Stephen Ministers, and support groups with the purpose of providing hope in Christ. The Counseling Ministry consists of three full-time licensed counselors and one office manager. In addition, five licensed professional counselors volunteer a minimum of four hours a week to counsel those who come to the Center for help. Lay Counselors meet with counselees for 10 sessions, coming alongside them in their pain, pointing them to a closer walk with Christ to begin their healing process. Stephen Ministers provide the uniquely Christian care of listening and supporting through prayer to those going through a short-term crisis. The Counseling Center also serves as a training facility for Master’s level intern students. These interns provide counseling while under professional supervision as part of their graduate coursework. They have an opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a Biblical Counseling Center. Scottsdale Bible Church Counseling Center is in a direct partnership with the Phoenix Seminary/Ottawa University joint counseling program as well as other graduate counseling programs. To receive counseling, schedule an intake appointment by calling the Counseling Center Office at 480.824.7239. There is usually a four-to-six week wait to be scheduled for an appointment. During the intake appointment, assessment is made for the most appropriate counselor for the client. Once a counselor is assigned, eight-to-ten counseling sessions are provided for individuals— men and women—and for couples/marriage. We cannot promise a specific counselor and since resources are limited, you may be referred to professional Christian counselors in the area. The Counseling Ministry is thankful for the opportunity to help people in the church and the community to work through their personal difficulties. The ministry welcomes licensed professionals who may be interested in volunteering time at the Center. Please call Rachel at 480.824.7239

Being
Conformed
to the image
of Christ
PART 2
By Don Farr, Director of Marriage Ministry
Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint. (Proverbs 29:18)
M
any people today have no vision. They may have a dream, but the vision is missing. People seeking a vision for life need to look no further than to Jesus for it. As Christ imparts that vision, a person can then pursue God’s vision through passionate, persistent, intentional, surrendered, and sincere prayer. God’s vision for a transformed life leads a person to become conformed to the image of Christ. (Rom. 8:29, 12:2; Phil 1:6) In last month’s issue of the Compass, I wrote about “fulfilling the minimal requirement for getting into heaven” and suggested that the phrase might stir your heart’s dissatisfaction if you settle for that low standard instead of being conformed to the image of Christ and transformed by the renewing of your mind. Christian philosopher Dallas Willard says that this type of mindset most often is a stirring of your prideful self that desires control and allows you to be more interested in having others (primarily your spouse) change. He says in his book Renovation of the Heart, “the greatest threat to God’s kingdom is mine” [the kingdom of “me”]. When you act on that hunger for control, you drift from God. Sometimes when this happens you don’t even realize it, but when you do, you need to understand you’re not worthless. You may have wandered and are distant from God, and you will remain distant until you surrender to Him and abandon your inaccurate thoughts that you are in control. To often, an absence of dissatisfaction leads to complacency or an acceptance of mediocrity. A lack of dissatisfaction is not the same thing as a blessing, especially if your life
lacks vision. I suggest that you pray for God to give you a vision for your life, for he has a way of bringing you dissatisfaction with the things in your life that are in the way of that vision. A deep, interpersonal walk with Jesus is common to the people that God powerfully uses. God is faithful to stir up visions, leading to passion which in turn leads to action which then leads to results. What begins as a quiet stirring, God in His way and time builds and unleashes through faith and prayer. Acknowledging the inspired dissatisfaction with your life today is God’s way of calling quietly for you to yield to Him. Yielding to God as you walk by faith with Him is the only way to bring true resolution to the discomfort or gnawing pain of dissatisfaction. Anything less is just medication, offering only short-term relief. If you, like so many Christians, aren’t sure you want to live that closely to God, Larry Crabb suggests that you pray “that you would want to want, what you don’t want now, in your walk and life in Christ.” Say it out loud to really hear it and grasp its importance. As you begin to want that transformation, your life and marriage will never be the same. There is nothing better than walking through life with an ever-deepening trust in the God who created you, loves you, and guides you. Humbling yourself in your heart before God may begin with being honest about the difficulty in giving up control. Hosea 7:14 declares that God longs to draw His children near from places of distance but that they “wail from their beds, instead of crying from their heart.” If prayer is just a disguise to get relief or to understand just so you can maintain control, then it has become a foolish effort that treats God like a puppet. However, if you cry from your heart just to find Him and to simply dwell in the presence of Christ with joy, and not to think you can manipulate Him for gain—that’s when the full power of God comes to you and through you to others. (see John 17:3)
It is there where you find that doing the right thing—the things Jesus would have you do— increasingly becomes the passion of your life. Great marriages never happen by accident, but will thrive with a vision for Christ at its center, intentional effort and the right tools. God will provide you the vision. You can intentionally provide the effort. Let the Marriage Ministry give you the tools.

MEN
The
ALL–IN
Purpose of Life A
man’s ultimate purpose in this life and the life to come is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever (1 Corinthians 10:31). Thus, everything you do should reflect the love of Christ that has been given to you in exchange for your sins (2 Corinthians 5:21). As you do, you glorify God and receive the joy of the Lord in response. This joy is the reflection of God’s glory and empowers you to enjoy Him forever. Only through a saving relationship in Christ is God glorified and pleased to bless you with His joy (John. 15:11). The joy of the Lord is the “fruit” of your relationships so that God is glorified. The evidence of this is shown in the depth of your heart in your relationships. Meaningful relationships require heart-level connection. For example, the depths of your family connections are reflected in how you value each member’s “heart” and thus, his or her life. Jesus showed the ideal approach to life. He said to love God and love people (Matthew 22:36-40). This will only be possible through an ALL-IN commitment to Christ. An ALL-IN commitment to Christ produces an ALL-IN attitude to glorify God. As you keep the commandments to love, you abide in His love. His joy in you is the result! True love brings true joy. True joy is the fruit of the Spirit, which is found only in Christ. As He has gone heart-to-heart with you, whereby His grace led to your faith, do unto others as He has done unto you. Reach out rather than repel; connect rather than remain aloof or afraid. Remember, as you love one another you keep the commandment of Christ and thus glorify God and bless Him with the love of your very soul (Psalms 103:1)! This is why it can be said, “the joy of the Lord is our strength.” _____________________________________________________________
Take H-E-A-R-T as you glorify God in your relationships: Hear— listen well by taking the time to truly hear the other person. Encourage—Develop your skill in the art of giving hope. Affirm— Express your admiration/confidence for someone’s personal strengths or giftedness. Give affirmation graciously. Recognize— Show your awareness of someone’s accomplishments. Thankfulness— Simply say thank you & remember to include blessing. As you grow in your ability to connect heart-to-heart with others, you will be strengthening yourself in one of the most crucial components of your life, which is to love. This is key in order to bring glory to God in all that you do. This is the heart of a person whom God sends forth as His servant and disciple-maker! This is a person who is blessed by God in all his ways! (1 Peter 3:8-13)
A Passion for Art
“Art has always been my passion,” said Amy Whitehouse, one of Scottsdale Bible’s volunteer artists. Amy and her husband, Mark, and family have attended Scottsdale Bible for twelve years. You may have seen Amy painting during a service, viewed her many colorful pieces at one of our art shows, or watched her paint at one of our previous Good Friday services. While Amy is passionate about art, her lifestyle hasn’t always been focused on her creations. Amy did a lot of art as a child and majored in art history in college but then went on to receive a master’s degree in counseling. She continued a digression from art while raising her young children due to lack of time, space and resources. In her mid-forties, Amy took up painting once again and now passionately paints daily in addition to teaching students of all ages to express themselves through their paintbrushes. Amy believes art is truly a multifaceted gift from God: it offers communication, therapy, self-expression, celebration, worship, problem-solving and just plain fun. “I love to experiment with all kinds of media and styles, as well as bring out others’ inner artist,” Amy said. She resonates with author Madeleine L’Engle, who has stated that because we are made in our Creator’s image, we are created to create. Amy is grateful to offer artistic creations for Scottsdale Bible because it gives her an opportunity to share her love of art with others. Her heart’s desire is that through her work, she may help others know and worship the Eternal King.

Students Making a Difference! I
t all started when two students wanted more time to read their Bible before they started their day at school. Ryan Marks and Trace Smith took their Bibles to the library at Horizon High School. It didn’t take long for other students to catch on. Others showed up with their Bibles, and Pop-a-Squat with Jesus was started. Now, a year later Pop-a-Squat meets daily with often 30 or more students to read God’s word as well as pray and encourage each other. Ryan sees students becoming more vocal about their faith and recommitting their lives to a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ. Trace has become a light to his friends and is challenged to teach God’s word and encourage others to let their lights shine as well. The joy amongst the Horizon students is contagious and growing! A few months after Pop-a-Squat started, God prompted Savannah Callaway, a student at Desert Mountain High School, to start a Bible
study and prayer time at her school as well. Joined by Ryan Hubner, they launched Trustfall. Savannah has moved on to Horizon High School, so Ryan is now leading this daily Bible study and prayer time. Ryan sees his friends being empowered by God’s word and experiencing an abundance of joy. Chaparral High School started a group this school year led by David Verwer called Kickin it with JC. After getting a glimpse of the pain so many students were experiencing, David was challenged to make a difference in his school. David struggled with discouragement and pain his freshman year but has been changed by the reality of Jesus’ love for him. The strength and joy that God has given him is now behind the work that God is doing at yet another high school. Join us in praying that this movement continues in our schools as God is transforming lives and students are making a difference where it counts.
October—High School Ministry Mission Month It seems like we just returned home from our 2011 High School summer mission trips as the buzz of excitement is still evident. That excitement will carry us right into our next season of missions, our 2012 summer missions. Six teams traveled to Argentina, Costa Rica, Minnesota, Slovakia, Spain and Tanzania this past summer. We will head back to some of the same places next year as well as add some new trips. These trips offer an opportunity for students and leaders to experience the mission field firsthand. They are challenged and changed as they are taken out of their comfort zone to cultures they have never experienced. Their lives are often transformed as God works in and through them. The trips present opportunities to share the gospel, help with camps or VBX programs, do work projects, live in the homes
of natives and share the day-to-day happenings with them as well as support and love the missionaries that Scottsdale Bible Church support and the people God has called them to. The application and selection process for next summer’s mission trips will begin in October. Mission applications are available on-line at scottsdalebible.com/highschol. We will have more information about them at our parent/student mission meeting on Sunday, October 2, 3:30 pm in E105. Be sure to complete your application by Wednesday, November 2. If you have any questions, contact Carol Hubner in Student Ministry, 480.824.7280 or students@scottsdalebible.com

CHILDREN BUILDERS NEEDED! The mission of
Scottsdale Bible is
“Win,Build,Send.”
Specifically, it means we strive to win people to faith in Jesus Christ; build them up in their faith; then send them out to be “winners & builders” in their spheres of influence. This is also the mission of every Christian. One way for you to take part in God’s mission is by joining in as a children’s ministry volunteer. We need you to invest in children and to build them up in their faith. God can use your talents, your abilities, and your investment in time to build up children to grow in their faith so they will know Jesus as Lord and themselves be sent as witnesses to their friends, classmates and teammates. Teaching children comes naturally to many people who don’t think of themselves as teachers. If you are a grandparent who has taught your grandchildren Bible stories and if you enjoy being with children, you qualify!
We also encourage teaching teams of a mother and teen daughter, husband and wife, and even whole families who lead a class. When you serve with your children or families, it becomes a great way to instill the value of serving in God’s kingdom to your own children. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching children is that they are so easy to love and they are quick to love you in return. Teaching children about Jesus offers unexpected blessings. Hearing their unique perspectives on what they learn will bring you insight in your own relationship with Christ, and you will experience the joy of seeing the faith of the children grow as they learn. You will be enriched by the experience and you will be serving God by building up His kingdom. Immediate openings are available in AWANA and Sunday children’s programming for all ages. Please prayerfully consider joining in to help equip a new generation of Christ followers. If you are ready to help build children as a children’s ministry volunteer, contact the Church ministry office children@scottsdalebible.com or 480.834.7308.

Baptism Class
November 6th or 13th
11:15 am in room E201 Baptism is an important event in the life of every Christian. It is significant for the person being baptized, and it makes an impacti on the people who watch your baptism. If you are a follower of Jesus who has not been baptized, we encourage you to be baptized as an act of obedience to the Lord and an expression of your faith in him. We offer a one-session class so you can understand what baptism is, and is not, according to the Bible. This class is required for every person interested in baptism. Don’t miss this opportunity to understand baptism better, and to be baptized as a public showing of your trust in Jesus.
