Straight-Piping” Experience the Wonder of a Lake in the Desert

By Brian Hartman, #866 Scottsdale Police Department Crime Prevention Officer, Via Linda District

One of the latest trends in custom car modifications has arrived in Scottsdale. The modification usually involves removing portions of a car’s exhaust system and “tuning” the computer that regulates a car’s fuel combustion. This produces loud “pops” and flashes that fire like gunshots out of the vehicle’s tailpipe. This trend is called “Straight-Piping” and there are numerous examples on social media sites.

The “Straight-Piping” trend has generated numerous calls and complaints from alarmed Scottsdale residents who often mistake the loud sounds for gunfire. This is a challenge for law enforcement as calls involving the possible discharge of a firearm are one of the highest priority incidents and result in numerous Officers being dispatched to the area. This trend is taking Officers away from other areas and duties where they are needed.

There are possible legal ramifications for those modifications to include both criminal and civil violations:

ARS 13-2904.A2 Disorderly Conduct

ARS 28-955 Mufflers; noise and air pollution prevention; emissions control devices;

A. A motor vehicle shall be equipped at all times with a muffler that is in good working order and that is in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. B. A person shall not use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device on a motor vehicle on a highway. C. The engine and power mechanism or a motor vehicle shall be equipped and adjusted to prevent the escape of excessive fumes or smoke.
