PALM BEACH

FLORIDA

EditorsLetter

I am delighted to welcome you to the latest edition of The Scout Guide Palm Beach, celebrating 13 years of supporting the small business community! Over my past six years as editor alone, we have supported over 300 businesses and distributed hundreds of thousands of guides to our readers in Palm Beach County and around the country!

As I write this, our beloved state of Florida is recovering from two major hurricanes, both of which affected almost every county. The destruction and devastation will take years to restore, but one thing remains true: The great people of Florida are resilient and strong, we will repair, we will rebuild, and we will do it together! Our small business community in this state over 2.5 million small businesses strong makes up 99.8% of our economy in the sunshine state!

This guide celebrates these business leaders, artisans, entrepreneurs, and creatives behind the exceptional small businesses, organizations, and institutions in Palm Beach County. These people have taken risks, followed their passions, and in the end, made a commitment to supporting our community. It is my honor to be an advocate, ambassador, and cheerleader for the people and the places you’ll see in these pages. These are the individuals and families that make our town a remarkable place to live!

I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of our TSG members that appear on these pages. Thank you for being a part of this powerful collective network that supports and celebrates our small businesses, the people behind them, and our community at large! It is an honor to tell your stories, and I can’t wait to share more about you online throughout the coming year!

It is my hope that this book will inspire discovery. Browse it, display it, share it with family and friends, but most importantly, use it. Whether you are a visitor, newcomer, or longtime local, I hope that this guide helps you engage with people in Palm Beach on a deeper level, and in doing so, helps enhance your life and enjoy our community to the fullest!

See you around town!

CELEBRATING PALM BEACH'S 146TH SEASON

Although becoming a US State in 1845 opened up Florida for pioneering, most of the development in South Florida was delayed due to continued clashes with the remaining Seminoles and the US Civil War. After the war, South Florida became the last frontier for pioneering on the Eastern Seaboard of the US. By 1875, South Florida was experiencing a type of "Gold Rush" from affluent northerners who came here for adventure and especially for hunting in the pristine wilderness. Big game like the Florida panther, alligators and crocodiles were popular targets as well as all types of exotic birds for their valuable feathers. Elisha Dimick, Palm Beach's first mayor, expanded his home on the lake to accommodate an increasing number of visitors, establishing the Cocoanut Grove House in 1880 as South Florida's first public lodging establishment in the settlement which became known as "Palm Beach" because of the abundant coconut palms in the region. Henry Morrison Flagler, co - founder of Standard Oil, was a guest at the Cocoanut Grove House in 1893. Purportedly enchanted by the tropical vegetation, Flagler decided that Palm Beach was the perfect location to fulfill his vision to build one of America’s grandest Gilded Age hotels, the Hotel Royal Poinciana, which opened in 1894. Reported as the largest hotel in the world, the hotel had 1,700 employees and accommodations for 2,000 guests. Flagler completed the Florida East Coast Railway to West Palm Beach also in 1894 and the Hotel Royal Poinciana became the preeminent winter destination for the wealthy elite, solidifying what we now know as

“The Season”, which makes the 2024 / 25 Season Palm Beach’s 146th season!

In addition to the pristine nature, Palm Beach became known as a recreational destination. The Royal Poinciana and the Palm Beach Inn ( later The Breakers from 1901 ) featured electric lighting, running water, and central heating, which were revolutionary technological innovations at that time. These resorts were the earliest examples of the all - encompassing resort experience, including fine dining, transportation, and recreation such as swimming, fishing, sailing, yachting, bicycling, tennis and golf, setting new standards in the hospitality industry on an international level. The Breakers’ Ocean Course is the oldest golf course in the state of Florida.

Palm Beach’s mild subtropical climate attracted ailing, wealthy Northerners who came to Palm Beach to recuperate. In 1903, world renowned homeopathic medicine specialist Dr. James Munyon completed construction of the 21room Hotel Hygeia on what is now known as Munyon Island in the Lake Worth Lagoon where he offered his cure - all Munyon’s Paw - Paw, a grain aperitif crafted from papaya, Florida citrus, passion fruit and all natural botanicals. The hotel helped Palm Beach County become known as a health and re - habilitation destination.

As Palm Beach developed into the American Riviera, sports and competitive sporting events have attracted famous athletes, sports enthusiasts and visitors from around the world. Delray Beach built a world class tennis stadium in 1974 and continues to host the Delray Beach Open, an ATP World Tour Tournament. PGA Tournaments in Palm Beach County date back to the 1940s and in 1981, PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens opened and has continuously hosted major professional golf tournaments on the PGA Tour, such as the Cognizant Classic ( earlier Honda Classic ) , which are broadcast live internationally. Now there are approximately 145 golf courses in Palm Beach County, branded “The Golf Capital of Florida”. The Gulf Stream Polo Club opened in 1923 and Palm Beach County eventually became one of the most prominent equestrian destinations in the world after the establishment of the Palm Beach Polo Club and the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. Over the last century, Palm Beach County has hosted numerous major league baseball teams each year for their Spring training to the delight of fans. The National Croquet Center, the world’s largest dedicated croquet facility, is based in West Palm Beach. The Palm Beaches also became known as a culturally rich destination, with some of Florida's most significant cultural Institutions such as the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach and the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach to name just a few.

Other world class hotels and resorts opened to provide accommodations for the growing number of visitors to The Palm Beaches, such as the Bradley Hotel in 1924, The Brazilian Court in 1926, The Lido - Venice in 1926 ( eventually The Vineta & The Chesterfield ) , The Cloisters Inn in 1928 ( currently called The Boca Raton ) and the Colony Hotel Palm Beach in 1947 as examples of the most historic properties.

With over 9 million visitors a year and deep historical roots in the hospitality industry, Palm Beach County has become one of the most preferred vacation destinations in the world, offering visitors from all socioeconomic backgrounds a wide variety of world - class cultural, social, sporting and commercial venues, as well as miles of pristine, easily accessible beaches and beautiful nature.

This season the Richard & Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum is presenting its Grand Exhibition called  Wish You Were Here: Tourism in the Palm Beaches , which will explore the fascinating history of how Palm Beach County became one of the most desirable destinations in the world over the last 150 years. The highly anticipated exhibition runs from November 15 – June 28th, 2025.
