Phoenix Art Museum ( PhxArt ) is one of few institutions in the United States that continually collects, preserves, and exhibits works of fashion. The museum began collecting fashion in 1966, when Arizona Costume Institute ( ACI ) was founded to support the acquisition and preservation of garments and accessories of historical and aesthetic significance. Today, the PhxArt fashion collection houses more than 9,000 objects of women’s, men’s, and children’s dress spanning the 18th century through the present.
It is also home to three special archives, including the Geoffrey Beene Archive of more than 300 garments by the late designer gifted by Patsy Tarr;
the Emphatics Archive, featuring avantgarde fashions by Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, Thierry Mugler, and others; and the Ann Bonfoey Taylor Archive, featuring the extraordinary custom-couture wardrobe of the American socialite and tastemaker.
Arizona Costume Institute also provides support through events and fundraising efforts, including the annual ACI Holiday Luncheon, that support and deepen awareness of the Museum’s fashion exhibitions and education programs. ACI’s support of PhxArt’s fashion program depends on the enthusiasm of dedicated volunteers to help maintain and expand the collection.

Newport Beach
Sand, surf, and sophisticated charm: Newport Beach delights with California’s quintessential o erings and its own unique flair.
For a town so steeped in seafaring history and surfing tradition, Newport Beach didn’t get a particularly seaworthy start. Back in the 1830s, Newport Beach was known as Bolsa de San Joaquin, boasting 14,000 head of cattle, 3,000 horses, and zero boats. Shipping – and the first iteration of the town’s name – came in the 1870s as commercial shipping took o . In 1902, Newport added “Beach” to their moniker, which attracted tourists and Hollywood elite, including Shirley Temple, James Cagney, and John Wayne. At the same time, surfers were flocking to The Wedge, which is still world-famous today. Coastal charm met California glamor with an ample dose of surf culture.

Today, Newport Beach life still revolves around the water, boats – from commercial vessels to the quintessential Du y – reign in what’s the largest recreational harbor on the west coast; surfing is all but ubiquitous; and anglers still bring in a great fresh catch. But you’re as likely to find internationally renowned brands as you are a mom-and-pop sweet shop. To help you navigate both and direct you to local favorites, we’ve shared finds and activities for hitting the town (and waves) of Newport Beach and surrounding Orange County.
