The where the royal Irish Guards call home simple answer is that I cannot describe for 0900 for registration and uniform how I felt and the same goes for when I was inspection. We were then put into our presented with my Queens Scout sections for the day; Hampshire Network Award. The day itself is a wonderful where in section D. Before we were put experience and I would recommend Scouts into our sections, the Chief Scout talked working hard towards getting their QSA and to us all telling us that we should enjoy going on the parade because you will end up the day to the full. smiling all day and have the best time of The morning consisted of marching practice around the parade ground where we learnt how to march in time, turn to the right and the left, halt, eyes right and how to move from 3 columns to 2 columns and back again. When we were practising how to stand at the alert and at ease, Bear came up and talked to us while our section leader rolled his Necker and tied a friendship knot in it. Luckily for us, by the time the parade came around the sun had come out and it was a beautiful day. The Parade itself started at 1345 in the royal mews where we would march to the quadrangle for the inspection by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and the Chief Scout. Once we had marched past the saluting base we marched to St George’s chapel for the service. After the service we formed up into our sections again and then marched back to the royal mews. When we marched out of the chapel we marched in to Windsor and waiting for us were all the people

Network do Gang Show! Marie Smith, Gosport Sharks Network Leader The drum roll sounds and the house lights rise for the last time. The audience joins the cast to sing the national anthem and the curtain slowly closes followed by applause and cheers by all as they celebrate another great show. Cast members hug and there are murmurs of who is going to do the show again next year and when they are going to meet up next. Gosport Gang Show almost becomes an addiction for those involved. Often you hear someone say they are not returning next year yet when it comes to signing on in October there they are again. Gosport Gang Show’s allure may have something to do with the music, dance or costumes but for many it is the friendships and fun that goes on behind the scenes. Each year members of the Guiding and Scouting organisation in Gosport and Fareham sign up and audition to be in the show. This year saw record

Often Gang Shows are thought of as being for ‘youngsters’ but Network certainly have a key role to play both on and off stage and of course it’s tons of fun! Practical jokes and the joy of laughing at each other dressed in costume as well as trying not to fall over during the dances. It’s always a moment too to see the males in their oompah loompah make up and gorgeous eye liner. This year’s show saw the treat of the females dressed in nun costumes (of course many Network members are anything but!) and there were many memorable moments such as when Cookie flashed her knickers whilst messing up a lift- he he! Yet all of these are now memories as the cast recover and catch up on sleep while the production crew goes back to the drawing board thinking of what next year’s show will contain.

Kate Durbin – Waterlooville Black Sheep An annual Waterlooville District Scout and Explorer competition camp was this year blown away by the efforts of the district Network, Black Sheep! With no group leaders to step forward and take the reins for this popular camp, the Network volunteered to pick up, organise and run the event and, through doubtfulness of leaders and quite probably trepidation on the parts of the children (and rightly so!) we battled through and managed to pull off the best camp in years! Inflatable’s, BBQ, bomb base, air rifle shooting, It’s a Knockout!, disco and all manner of good things kept the children entertained while the lot of us kept busy setting up activities, refereeing the pushball (I’m sorry but how dangerous is that?!) and drinking tea (over 200 cups made over the weekend!) Naturally, there was a lot of work to do behind the scenes and the organisation never seemed to end but it all came out in the wash and, apart from the mud which was atrociously terribly messy the whole weekend was amazingly good fun and ran just about perfectly! Thanks muchly to our volunteers from Gosport, Fareham East and Basingstoke who came to help us out and, naturally, the black sheep, making us overall 16 strong at flag break on Saturday morning! Next stop…..EVO!

silent disco on the Saturday, where DJ’s Pete and Gary (from Eastleigh Network) played two channels of music for party-goers to tune into using wireless headphones. Explorers and leaders alike arrived in fancy dress, including Cinderella, a penguin, and even sonic the hedgehog! Definitely one of the funniest sights was Pegasus Network leader, Jon “Tall Paul” Rowsell dressed as dangermouse. Throughout the weekend, Portsmouth Network ran a cafe for the Explorers, selling copious amounts of chips, jacket potatoes, bacon sarnies and drinks, and generally keeping everyone well fed with sweets and ice creams. Once again it was another successful camp, where friendships were made, new skills developed, and Paul Shutt was made to dance....right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, trumpet!

Activities ran all day Saturday and ranged from space hoppers, to first aid as well as inflatables and helicopter piloting. Network members from across Hampshire were on hand to help man the bases, being left in charge of circus skills and slack lining. Of course in order for Network to undertake a leading role in running the circus skills base it was vitally important that we had enough experience and expertise in teaching these skills to the Explorers, so Friday evening was spent on a crash course spinning plates and having Census 2009 to 2010 space hopper races, as well as modelling balloons into dogs and Hampshire Scouting membership grows 905 giraffes (whoever said Network Lizzie Harvey19,561. from Rotherfield = 4.8%, now totalling Once again we didn’t know how to have fun!).
