Hampshire Network goes MAD in Essex! Members of Hampshire Network donned their new yellow “on tour” polo shirts for a weekend of activities and fun in Essex. Network members from Southampton, Romsey, Eastleigh and the New Forest joined forces to take part in the annual activity camp in Basildon. Network members gathered from far and wide to participate in a range of activities, including: zip wire, archery, inflatable’s, and crafts. Also popular was the swimming pool that was provided by members of Southampton Duck Network! This year’s evening theme was “prehistoric”, so several cavemen and a sabre toothed tiger later the Network were ready to party long into the night. The evening was made very special as all helped to celebrate New Forest North Pegasus Network Leader Tall Paul (aka Jon Rowsell) turning 23! The next morning Hampshire Hunts conjoined with some real northern people to take part in the highly contested “its a knockout” tournament. After nearly 2 hours of welly wanging, bungee running, and water filling we were announced as this year’s winning team, bringing home a lovely solid plastic trophy!

Steamers take ironing to the extreme! Charlotte Jones - Eastleigh/Chandlers Ford Steamers
Eastleigh/Chandlers Ford Steamers Network was out in force around Hampshire for a spot of extreme ironing one May evening. With the guys dressed in one of the members mum’s old clothes (and stunning they looked too!) we hit the road for photos in various places. This included in the middle of busy roundabouts, our District Commissioner David’s home, a visit to Network Commissioner Ray’s home, gate-crashing Fareham East District AGM (some +25 Adults found it amusing but generally that one didn’t go down too well, boring or what!), MacDonald’s and finally our much loved Trek Cart. With many car horns hooted and double takes by passersby, a great laugh was had by all! Just a little bit of silly fun, but there is an annual prize trophy to win!
Best Network Name? I Spy - Roving Reporter
Itchen Ka Boom! Network became famous back in February 2009 as their Network name appeared on the front cover of Scouting Magazine’s Network supplement with the statement “Who’s got the best Network name?”. Ever since then our intrepid reporters have been trying to track down the reason for the name and finally their toil paid off. Chairman Sam Weller, told us “It's not that interesting really! We were watching Madagascar and the little penguin kept saying Ka Boom. After the film we kept shouting Ka Boom randomly, then we had to come up with a Network name, we were still in a Ka Boom phase when we suggested that name. Most of our current Networks don’t know why we're called Ka Boom!”. Now there’s a reason to choose your Network name very very carefully. Ka Boom!
Duck Network takes to the water Sam Chapman - Southampton City Duck Network
In our normal tradition for investiture we headed off to the Isle of Wight. First investiture of the night came on the ferry over (we have to be over water) and was Tim Moff that was invested. Moff has been a member on and off for about a year and we thought it was about time we made it all official. He’s wearing my Duck shirt as it turns out he never got one…. And in fact still doesn’t. It’s on the ‘to do’ list. Next investiture of the night was Kaylee Gauntlet. As an Isle of Wight resident (Network is nothing if not flexible across
the boarders) Kaylee met us over there this presented us with the problem of where to invest her. With blinding improvisational skills we did it all on the East/West Cowes chain ferry, in front of a display of rubber ducks. Very fitting. Since Network doesn’t promote alcoholic drinking, we then went for an architectural tour of some of West Cowes finest public houses.
Barbarians BBQ in the rain Clare Webb - Portsmouth (City of) Barbarians Network
Sunday 10th May Hampshire’s Network members descended on Queen Elizabeth County Park Nr Petersfield for an early summertime BBQ. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side but that didn’t bother us, with food a plenty and lots of catching up to do it was a great opportunity to socialise with old friends and to make new ones as well. We even had a visit from a certain Network Commissioner, who we also learnt doesn’t read his NetNews. We caught him out about where the information about this BBQ appeared, hehe, so he won’t see this, haha ha. Many thanks to all those who came. It was great to see so many old (some a bit too old at +25! But nice to see them) and new faces (not all stayed for the photo) there and we hope to see you at an end of summer BBQ and next year as this event seems to becoming somewhat of a tradition.
Hampshire has a medi-Evo time! This year’s Evo was held over the rather wet bank holiday weekend in May, with a medieval theme and the opportunity for Network members to let their hair down. Network members from as far as Essex and Lancashire made the pilgrimage to Ferny Crofts campsite in the New Forest. Popular activities this year included the introduction of the Trek Cart competition to the weekend, which was fiercely contended by some of the fitter members of the Networks. Sunday afternoon saw members partake in a battle re-enactment in which sub camps had to protect their king, using cardboard weapons and shields. The evening entertainments included a silent disco, as well as party games, bandeoke, live music, and fancy dress.
- Inflatable fun - Trek cart race - Fancy dress - Battle reenactment
A great weekend was had by all, roll on InterNet 2011!
Are you interested in the way that Scouting is shaped in the future? Would you like the chance to tell the “oldies” exactly what you want from Scouting? Hampshire Scout Youth Council is a brand new initiative being set up by the County Commissioner, Adam Jollans, and is fully supported by a team of Network members. The council will be a space for young people in Hampshire aged 13-21 to have their say on what matters to them. The first meeting will be a camp, 2-3rd Oct at Ferny Crofts. There are limited places so please get in touch if you wish to take part or help run it! If you would like to be part of this exciting opportunity please contact: fiona.durrant@hotmail.com
New County Scout Network Co-Chairs! 5th July 2010, the County Scout Network Committee voted in two new Network Co-Chairs (is that Co-Chairmen or Co-Chairpersons!?) working together to develop the section and promote various opportunities to members is amongst other duties. Sam Chapman and Fi Durrant have taken on this role and are making a priority of visiting other Networks to offer support and build communication links.
