2020 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP GUNNER WIEBE DEFENDS HIS TITLE! Gunner Wiebe is the 2020 National Car Rental Southern California Assistant PGA Professional Champion after going the distance with a ten-under par, 134. Featuring the largest field in five years, 95 players competed in the 36-hole championship hosted in Beaumont at Oak Valley Golf Club. Round one leader, Kyle Mendoza, PGA, of The Farms Golf Club posted an opening round of seven-under, 65, to lead the morning wave. Wiebe, of Bel-Air Country Club, found himself three shots off the lead after opening with a steady four-under, 68. Turning up the heat in the afternoon, Wiebe rattled seven birdies for a second round of six-under, 66, to finish three shots clear of the field. “Today was really great, not having played for a while because of COVID, it feels really good to compete again, and to get this win,” said Wiebe after hoisting the perpetual trophy for the second time in as many years. The tournament low round goes to Thomas Chu, PGA, of San Diego Country Club after catching fire in round two, posting an eight-under, 64, for a two day total of six-under and a T-4 finish. The following three players will be joining Wiebe at the 44th PGA Assistant National Championship November 12-14, 2020 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
