SCP | Colemore by Matthew Hilton Matthew Hilton excels in upholstery design, his freehand approach and depth of understanding of the materials in play allow him to create refined sculptural pieces that have real strength of character. This piece has a modern attitude, but was inspired by the many examples of open armed armchair designs from the Victorian and Edwardian period. Hilton has utilised the traditional techniques available at the SCP specialist upholstery factory to create a design that has subtle curves and a striking silhouette. Made using sustainable materials at SCP’s specialist upholstery factory in Norfolk, England. The frame is made from hardwood ply and beech, with ash legs and arm support. The chair is upholstered using a combination of rubberised coconut hair, wool felt, needled wool and recycled foam. The back is webbed, sprung and elasticated, upholstered with rubberised coconut hair, wool felt and needled wool.

SCP | Winchester by David Weeks The Winchester sofa is a new take on a formal typology, with an upholstered frame separate from the seat and back cushions. New York based American designer David Weeks has created a modern look by the use of extended pleats on the seat and back to give the cushions their tension. With the addition of small unconventional details, Weeks has created a design of great elegance and style. His un-prescriptive approach to creating objects is a good fit for upholstery design, where the nature of the materials require a flexible and progressive mindset. Made at SCP’s specialist upholstery factory in Norfolk, England, Winchester is made from a beech frame, zig zag sprung seat base with an elasticated web back. The arms and top rail of the back have a wrap of plastizote and needled wool for increased comfort. The seat and back cushions are foam with a Dacron wrap and a quilted cover. The outside back is also quilted, while the legs are in beech.

Donna Wilson | Abstract Assembly After 16 years of working for the most part on small scale production pieces, Donna Wilson took a little time out to rediscover her creative roots and find a new direction for her work. After a period by the sea and under the sky, she has immersed herself in the world of materials, processes and colour, the outcome being a new body of work that is raw, experimental and refreshingly playful. Taking painting as a starting point, she has created new three dimensional objects in wood that use traditional joinery methods and vibrant combinations of colours.

Arflex Arflex was founded in 1947, when a group of three Pirelli technicians teamed up with the young architect Marco Zanuso to experiment with materials for the furniture industry. Their idea was simple – how could new materials and technologies be applied to the making of upholstery, to help modernise both the production of the pieces and the designs themselves.

Calico’s method embodies years of research in the various disciplines in paper marbling, which have spanned the globe. The arts of Suminagashi and Ebru, emanating from Japan and Turkey centuries ago are both evident in their inaugural collection. The expansion of traditional practices is what makes Calico Wallpaper truly unique. By drawing on the past, present and future, they create something entirely new.

The Flora Collection brings the essential feeling of being connected to nature indoors—like a breath of fresh air. Balancing realism with abstraction, this series of four color-ways melds the meticulous anatomical detail of botanical studies with the free forms of nature. With a framing suggestive of the microscopic view, the mural offers a glimpse of a small part of a larger ecosystem. For the Gobelin Room at Schloss Hollenegg, Charlap Hyman & Herrero has created a printed mural from hand painted artworks to clad both wall and ceiling. The wallcovering depicts the lush and verdant vines that spill down from covered walkways, staircases, and towers throughout the castle, teaming with a variety of insect life. By bringing this defining feature of the facade indoors, the designers distort the distinction between the decorated interior and the wilderness beyond, while referencing the presence of historical landscape wallpaper throughout the castle. Calico The Muse Collection is a collaboration between Calico Wallpaper and Faye Toogood that celebrates the diversity of womankind. The collection features a tableau of female faces that both complement and intermingle with one another. Hand painted by Faye Toogood, the composition depicts subjects with a rich array of features, poses, and expressions, all rendered with sweeping brushstrokes. We set this singular illustration against distinctive background colors to create a series of five colorways. The timeless spirit of the English landscape imbues the Woodlands Collection, created by Faye Toogood. An abstracted take on the rococo fashion of encasing an entire room in a scenic mural, the non-repeating panoramas were drawn and painted by hand before being digitally transferred onto hessian panels. The designs were inspired by Toogood’s childhood memories of rural England which she developed into three unique colorways: “Woodlands,” a graphic monochrome sketch of sylvan calm; “Fields,” a painterly evocation of a rural idyll in bold, rich colours; and “Moors,” which encapsulates the rugged uplands with broad horizontal strokes.

Jochen Holz Jochen Holz transforms prefabricated glass tubes into one-off glassware pieces using the lampworking technique. Glass is melted over a torch and gently blown, then shaped and fused together, creating a beautiful body of work that is both spontaneous and precise. Holz was initially trained in the highly technical world of lampworking, which produces glass that is most commonly used for scientific applications. After studying at the RCA, Holz has developed a meditative working practice in East London, where improvisation and controlled experimentation lead his creative output. The work he creates is innately human, capturing in form a specific moment in time.

The textile triptychs are hand-loomed in the Teixidors workshop using natural ecological merino wool, carefully washed to achieve a lightly felted and soft finish. Each piece consists of three woven quadrilaterals of subtly differing proportions and hues, sewn together into a long patchwork with fringed edging; the contrasting yet complementary colourways (including subtle ochre, neutral cream and a rich scarlet) are achieved by a combination of natural wool tones and regular and vegetable dyeing. The tactile qualities of the pieces are further enhanced with felt-like elements and Teixidors’ characteristic appliquéd cords, making each of these tripartite blankets into a domestic anthology of fabric textures.
