Nail NATION REVEALED: The most lucrative UK cities for a beauty career Permanent make-up & microblading training provider, K.B Pro, has released the results of its Beauty Career Index. The Index analysed a number of UK cities to determine which locations are most profitable for a beauty career, which are best for education, and which have the biggest appetite for treatments. K.B Pro analysed average salary reports, as well as spending on beauty services and the popularity of treatments on social media, to find the most profitable UK city to have a career in beauty. This location is revealed as Liverpool, closely followed by Leeds, and then London. While hairdressing is the highest earning beauty career in the three cities, with data showing huge demand for this sector, the study reveals that being a nail technician or aesthetician are also profitable professions in Leeds in particular, with clients spending on average over £600 on both treatments annually. Being a lash technician or cosmetic aesthetician in London are also lucrative career choices, the Index reveals. Based on ratings in the analysed cities, London takes the top spot as the best UK location to begin a beauty career. The UK capital is home to 71 schools scoring a rating of 4.5* and above on Google. Glasgow is second in this category, with 53 schools with a 4.5* and above rating, followed by Manchester: the third best city to study and qualify in the beauty industry, with 48 schools rated 4.5* and above. www.kbpro.com

MEN INCREASE SPENDING ON HEALTH AND BEAUTY PRODUCTS Research by software company, Voyado, has analysed buying trends for 2022, finding that men aged 18-25 increased their spending on health and beauty products and treatments. The Voyado Shopping Index, which provides shopping behaviour analysis and insight from the UK and Nordics, shows that consumers bought more but spent less in 2022. Despite an increase in shopping frequency in the health and beauty market, the number of products bought per transaction decreased among consumers aged 18-25 and 45 and over. The only demographic to increase spending was men aged 18-25. The Index also reports a strong rise in customer returns, particularly among women. On average, returns increased by 13% across all categories tracked: health & beauty, sports & fashion, DIY & home improvement, and electronics. Per Akerberg, chief executive of Voyado, comments: “What has impacted shopping behaviour in the past 12 months is primarily the economic situation; it has caused a decline in overall consumer spending, and brands are under pressure to adjust Per Akerberg to post-Covid shopping behaviour. “I think customers’ hunt for a bargain is going to drive more traffic online – it’s far easier to shop around and compare prices on the internet, compared to in-store. We will likely see brands try to foster deeper connections with customers through live shopping and social commerce.” www.voyado.com

Shared Beauty Secrets founder scoops Great British Entrepreneur of the Year title Beauty industry businesswoman, Clare Anderson, has been named Great British Entrepreneur of the Year in the south east. Clare was recognised for her contributions to the beauty and wellbeing industry at a gala dinner at the five-star Grosvenor House Hotel in Westminster, London. In 2009, the mother of one introduced the Lava Shells massage to the UK & Ireland. Her first account was Bali Leha spa on Sir Richard Branson’s private Necker Island in the Caribbean, and her self-heating shells are now used in over 2,000 spas. Bike ride raises over £7k for Hair & Beauty Charity A team of 14 riders took part in the Hair & Beauty Charity Bike Ride in the valley of Lake Garda, which raised £7,265 to support hair & beauty professionals in need. The event returned for the first time since 2019, when teams travelled to Girona, Spain. The group took rides of varying difficulties, from gentle routes to full-on adventures into the foothills and beyond, all set against a picturesque backdrop. The riders: • Brian Thomson (Leslie Hairdressing) • Anne Veck (Anne Veck Salon) • Jeff Goodwin (Jeff Goodwin Hair) • Andy Mercer (HB Collective and Great Lengths Hair Extensions) • Victor Pajak (Headquarters) • Kate Preston and Ian Chisham (Kate Preston Salons) • Arianna Botti (L’Oreal Professional Products Division) • Mariya Tsvetkova (Hair by Mariya) • Julie and Andrew Mercer (Julie Mercer Beauty Therapy). This was the fifth Hair & Beauty Charity Bike Ride to be organised by Headquarters’ Victor Pajak, who comments: “Thank you to everyone who took part in 2022’s Hair & Beauty Charity Bike Ride and to everyone who supported riders on their fundraising journey. “It was a tough ride at times and I’m so proud of every rider who took part, and that we raised over £7,000 that will help the charity continue doing the great work that it does; supporting people in our industry when they need it most.” www.hairandbeautycharity.org

GOOGLE SHARES 2022’S MOST SEARCHED-FOR NAIL TRENDS Google’s Year in Search report 2022 details the terms searched for most by US-based users of the search engine. The report focuses on growth, rather than overall search volume, with findings based on searches that saw a spike in traffic over the year, compared to 2021. It found the most searched nail terms of 2022 to be: • Hailey Bieber nails. • Red nail theory. • Milky nails. • Half moon nails. • Chrome nails. • Pink coffin nails. • Euphoria nails. • Chocolate glazed donut nails. • Mardi gras nails. • Pink French tip nails. TikTok is a clear influence on the search terms, with the ‘red nail theory’ – the concept that wearing red on nails helps to attract more attention – hailing from the platform. Hailey Bieber’s nail tech, Zola Ganzorigt, also influenced trends, with the ‘glazed donut’ designs she created for the model helping the style to go viral. But she’s not the only tech influencing nail-related searches, as thanks to celebrity nail artist, Natalie Minerva, TV show, Euphoria‘s nail looks saw a spike in searches in 2022. www.about.google

anuary is generally a ‘blue’ month: the fun of the festive period is over, the winter days are cold and short, and Blue Monday takes place, considered the saddest day of the year. But the colour’s use on our cover promotes purely positive feelings. “The photo shoot was inspired by nature, and I chose butterflies as a key theme because they symbolise optimism, transformation and freedom,” reveals Agnieszka Landoch, the Southampton-based nail stylist behind the enchanting enhancements. Conceptualised in spring last year, the nail look offers a sense of hope and happiness: qualities that radiate from Agnieszka as she talks to Scratch. The nail artist & educator joined the industry 10 years ago, after overcoming cancer and seeking a career that would fill her days with joy and suit her using a wheelchair. “I Agnieszka Landoch asked my sister what I should do, and she suggested nails,” she explains. “She knew I had always enjoyed styling my own nails and proposed that I use my skills to provide a service.” From this, Agnieszka invested in the required equipment and training, spending time mastering different styles and designs until she could establish her own business. “I realised I was a talented nail artist, and this is what I am meant to do and love. Also, one of my dreams has always been to work within the 18 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

by competing across the globe. But my biggest goal is to open a training academy in Southampton.” The nail stylist juggles competition work, tekking, educating and running online shop, Nail Empire, through which she sells Victoria Boro Cosmetics nail products. While she admits the long hours have proved a struggle, she says that it has been worthwhile, as she boasts 25 competition cups, two crowns and two nail Grand Prix titles, alongside a loyal client base. She also receives orders for her online shop from all over the world.

psychology field and this has partly been fulfilled, as I am like a therapist to my clients, who talk to me about their problems,” she says.

With such an illustrious portfolio, it’s surprising that until this Scratch cover, the talented nail pro hadn’t used her skills to create images of this nature. “This was my first poster shoot, so as well as being exciting, it was demanding and didn’t always go to plan – but I never gave up,” she admits. “The hard work truly paid off and when I saw the final images, all I could say was ‘wow’. Then, when I learned that the work had been chosen for the cover of Scratch, l felt truly proud and grateful. This is my biggest accomplishment in the nail industry.”

“This was my first ever poster shoot, so as well as being exciting, it was demanding and didn’t always go to plan – but I never gave up.”

COVERSTORY

“The photo shoot was inspired by nature, and I chose butterflies as a key theme because they symbolise optimism, transformation and freedom.”

Initially planning to sculpt one nail to be photographed, Agnieszka became so engrossed in the concept that she decided to create five extreme nails for a mesmerising result. Her photo shoot team consisted of photographer, Barbara Flyte, and good friend and artistic make-up specialist, Mariola Mamak-Rowinska, who also offered to be the model. Mariola’s combined role allowed Agnieszka to solely focus on the nails before the five-hour shoot, during which she built and extended using gel and painted using acrylic paint, following a template she had drawn for each nail. “I carefully stuck every sequin and bead onto the nails by hand, curing for 45 seconds,” she reveals. These match the glittery background of the image, which is used to depict a starry night. “Despite this intricate embellishment work, the most stressful part of the process was ensuring that the enhancements sat correctly on the nail. They are long and thin, so I had to make sure they would not snap,” she explains. So, did the photo shoot spark a passion for styling cover-worthy nails? Agnieszka shares that not long after creating this image, her nail creations were back in front of the camera for a similar project – and her sights are set on taking part in more going forward. With her undeniable talent, dedication and passion for the craft, we cannot wait to see what she creates next.

TECHTALK Name: Kay Kirsop Role: Nail tech & Louella Belle brand ambassador Location: Hertfordshire, UK @kaycoopernails “My 2023 resolution is to set up a home salon after 12 years as a mobile tech. I suffer from fibromyalgia, so travelling for work is starting to take its toll. I love my mobile client base and a lot of them are unable to visit salons, therefore I will be cutting down mobile appointments to one or two days a week so I can continue to see my loyal clients, many of whom have been with me for the best part of a decade. The rest of my clients are able, and are looking forward to attending their appointments at my home salon when it is completed.”

Name: Alanya Jennings Role: Nail tech & CutieOils brand ambassador Location: Nottinghamshire, UK @beautybyalanya_x “My New Year’s resolution is to support those who are starting their career in the beauty industry. I plan to visit my local college as a guest speaker and work closely with my apprentice to help her achieve her qualifications and increase her confidence in offering treatments. I really hope to inspire more people to join the beauty industry.”

Name: Melanie Garlick Role: Nail technician Location: North Lincolnshire, UK @cruelty_free_clawz “I plan to enter competitions including the Scratch Stars Awards and Nailympia, and I am also keen to attend Nail Safari, as it is a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and network with fellow members of the industry. I’ve made so many wonderful friends in the nail world who I’ve never met in real life, and 2023 is the year to change this! I am also really looking forward to expanding my brand, Cruelty Free Clawz. I am planning on bringing another artist into the Clawz family to enable more television opportunities to be undertaken.”

Name: Fran Humphrey Role: Nail technician Location: North Lincolnshire, UK @gels_by_fran “This year, I plan to enhance my knowledge through further training. This year, I’ll be completing the Essential Nail Professional Diploma from Nail Knowledge, which has a wealth of timely information from industry professionals.”

Name: Natacha Botting Role: Nail technician Location: Swindon, UK @tres_belle_by_natacha “I would like to put more focus into my session work over the next 12 months. Last year, I worked on some incredible campaigns with brands including Charlotte Tilbury and H&M. In turn, I would like to manage my diary better so I can incorporate both private clients and session work. I would also like to work towards achieving awards in 2023. The top of my list is the Scratch Stars Awards. It would be the ultimate dream to win a Scratch Star.”

Name: Dani Bailey Role: Nail tech & OPI NailBoss Location: Bridgend, South Wales @danibaileynailartist “My New Year’s resolution is to get out of my comfort zone. Since attending Nail Safari last November, I have realised how much more there is to learn and explore in the nail world. I was privy to new techniques, so want to keep trying different things. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when working alone! I have a few training courses lined up, which I’m really excited about, as well as nail events in the UK and abroad. I’m also signing up for Nail Safari again and I can’t wait to see my friends at the Scratch Stars Awards party in July.”

Name: Aimee Hamilton Role: Nail tech & brand ambassador for Nail Order & Sissi Location: Glasgow, Scotland @thelacquerlassie “My New Year’s nail resolution is to finally become an educator and to offer high quality training and continued support to students. Offering free workshops will help boost their selfconfidence and build a successful business.”

Name: Ruth Munro Role: Educator Location: Culloden, Inverness, Scotland @littleblankspaces “I aim to change my working hours to fit around the lifestyle I want to live. I’ve always worked at least three evenings past 9pm and most weekends. This year, I will be reducing these unsociable hours and will prioritise creating content, scheduling time in my working hours to achieve this. I hope for a better work/life balance.”

Name: Sarah Hartley Role: Founder of Blossom Tree Social Location: York @blossomtreesocial “One of my goals this year is to take care of myself more and do what I love most. Global colour authority, Pantone, has unveiled ‘Viva Magenta’ as its Colour of the Year 2023. HELENA BIGGS explores the shade’s connotations…

P

antone, the world-renowned source of colour expertise, has unveiled PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta as its Colour of the Year 2023.

Every year for 24 years, the chosen shade has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, beauty, home furnishing and industrial design. Viva Magenta is described by the institute as ‘brave and fearless, a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes optimism and joy. Powerful and empowering, it is an animated red that encourages experimentation and self-expression without restraint; an electrifying, boundary-less shade that is manifestly ‘out there’ and is a stand-out statement.’ Channel this expression in your nail and beauty offerings this year with a striking overlay or subtle nall artistry, or through lipstick and eyeshadow offerings. To determine the Pantone Colour of the Year, the institute’s colour experts are influenced by the entertainment industry, art collections and new artists, as well as fashion, design and popular travel destinations. Influences may also stem from technology, materials, textures, social media and sporting events that capture worldwide attention. This year’s shade is rooted in nature and demonstrates strength in an unconventional time. “As virtual worlds become a more prominent part of our daily lives, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family, as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known. “Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking

the forces of nature, it galvanises our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, adds: “The last few years have been transformative in many ways, in terms of people’s sense of self, and the way wellbeing, priorities and identity are thought about. As a result, space has been created where we are free to explore and be accepted for exactly who we feel we are, whether it be in a cybernetic universe, a conventional space, or a magical blend of both.” Pressman notes the ‘audacious, witty and inclusive’ Viva Magenta shade to be one that encourages experimentation and the exploration of new possibilities.

The Magentaverse Pantone worked with creative company, Huge, on a design experiment to explore the relationship and tensions between new technology and human creativity. The team has created the visual manifestation of Viva Magenta using AI generative tool, Midjourney, incorporating the messages and ideas embodied by the hue to curate an immersive world – the ‘Magentaverse’. This examines the connections between nature and technology. The Magentaverse has led to a collaboration with tech-driven company, Artechouse, on an immersive exhibition in Miami, which features colour explorations inspired by NASA and Pantone partners, Motorola, Lenovo, Spoonflower and more. “Leveraging the power of technology and Pantone’s expertise in colour to curate a new interpretation of the Pantone Colour of the Year, we created the Magentaverse,” continues Pressman. “This is an unexpected and exciting colour universe we look forward to sharing with the world.”

Do you struggle to find time to eat, drink or keep energy levels high while at work? Techs serve up nutritional tips to support from the inside out REBECCA HITCHON REPORTS

Do s & dо ts: Eating

Where does nutrition rank in your list of business priorities? When juggling the many responsibilities of a nail pro, it can often take a back seat. In a client-focused role, easy options may prevail, such as buying a quick lunch from a local shop or worse, skipping a meal to get through your busy work schedule. However, what’s important for you and your business is to consider how to use food and drink to boost energy, concentration and wellbeing.

The importance of nutrition

“For years, I skipped meals and survived on coffee and junk food in the salon,” reveals Ruth Munro, Magpie Beauty educator & owner of Little Blank Spaces, Inverness. “I didn’t prepare my food in advance, so processed food was the only option. I would find myself feeling sluggish and tired by the afternoon, then would be exhausted and irritated by the end of each shift.” Since making a Ruth Munro resolution to eat more healthily and drink more water at work, Ruth tells Scratch that she feels better physically and mentally, with more energy and a better mood, while also saving money.

Elissa Newton

“It is imperative that all members of a team are given adequate breaks to eat a proper lunch, as this is law to follow,” adds Elissa Newton, Lecenté educator & owner of Derry salon, The Nail Lady. “If staff members’ days are tightly packed with clients, causing them to miss their lunch break, this can result in negative feelings and poor work performance.”

But where should you begin with bettering eating and drinking habits in the workplace? Scratch chats to techs who reveal their top tips, and sources products to help you on your nutritional journey…

ü

Do

Store healthy snacks in your salon or kitbag, in case you or your colleagues’ lunch breaks get delayed or shortened. Elissa Newton recommends protein or nut bars, quick oats, rice cakes and fruit as a valuable source of energy.

ü

Eat breakfast to replenish your energy levels for the day ahead and start on the right note. “A nutritional breakfast is key; something healthy and filling will keep you going until lunchtime, for example I usually eat strawberries, granola and yogurt,” says Learnah Starbuck, The GelBottle Inc brand ambassador & owner of Nottingham Learnah Starbuck salon, Polished By Learnah Starbuck.

û

Don t

Opt for ready-to-eat, processed foods like instant noodles or soups, to avoid high levels of salt and feelings of sluggishness. “Healthy homemade food, with plenty of vegetables, provides me with the most energy throughout Homemade risotto, soup and my shifts,” says Ruth Munro. salad dishes by Ruth Munro, ready to take into the salon.

Get organised

Being nutritional requires preparation – from the food you buy, to scheduling time to make meals and allowing breaks to eat. But while these may seem like yet more tasks to add to your to-do list, they won’t feel that way if properly planned into your day.

Product pick

Use a bottle of water with a straw, preferably a 2-litre size, to reach your recommended daily intake. Both Learnah Starbuck and Sophie Donaldson, Georgie Smedley Group ambassador & owner of Sophie’s Cosy Corner in Kent, recommend this. “The bottle is safe to have at the nail desk as it doesn’t get contaminated with dust from filing,” explains Learnah. “The straw means I can sip quickly, without getting distracted from a design or Sophie Donaldson conversation,” adds Sophie.

“I never used to allocate time for lunch; I would just grab what I could throughout the day when I had a spare 10 minutes. But now I book a proper break every day using my booking system, and I couldn’t go without this time to rest and restore my energy levels for the afternoon,” says Learnah Starbuck.

ü

û

Sip water regularly throughout the working day, using moments in between steps of a nail design as an opportune moment for this. “The dust and vapours from treatments can be dehydrating,” comments Elissa Newton. “Herbal teas, as well as water, are great, as you’re more aware that they’re cooling down, so you drink faster and hydrate quicker,” she adds.

Don t

Opt for sugary drinks for energy boosts. “They give an instant buzz of energy, but don’t maintain hydration and can make you feel lethargic later in the day,” reveals Bryony Howell, The GelBottle Inc ambassador & owner of Shropshire studio, Gels By Bry. “In the past, I have suffered from a sore throat due to talking to clients without drinking water in between. Conversation is such a huge Bryony Howell part of the job, but when I’m dehydrated and lethargic, I find it more challenging to chat to clients and provide them with the best all-round experience.”

û

Substitute water for caffeine. Ruth Munro tells Scratch that she feels better since reducing the number of caffeinated drinks she has to two per day, and drinking more water. The general advice for healthy adults is to drink no more than 400mg of caffeine per day, to lessen side effects such as fatigue, irritability, anxiety and health issues like heart and stomach problems. Ideally, up to 200mg daily is best to reduce any risk: the equivalent of two eight-ounce cups of coffee, five eight-ounce cups of green tea, or four cans of Diet Coke.

“A nutritional breakfast is key; something healthy and filling will keep you going until lunchtime.” Learnah Starbuck

The Beauty Boss Planner £14.95 + VAT via www.thebeautybossacademy.co.uk This planner features a ‘Balance Boss’ section to encourage nail and beauty pros to take time for themselves, so that they can perform their role at their best. It helps to track water intake, and whether a healthy lunch has been eaten in between clients.

My Nail Planner by Celina Rydén £50 + VAT www.homeofnailart.com Renowned nail artist & educator, Celina Rydén, created this planner to encourage nail techs to practice self-care. It includes pages to note lunches, energy levels and how much water has been drunk during the day.

Advice for on-the-go

For mobile techs who may lack the facilities to heat up or prepare a meal in their working day, a flask for homemade soups and smoothies is a great way to enjoy healthy, energy-boosting and tasty food around their schedule. Nutrient-dense foods offer vital vitamins and minerals, are low in calories but make you feel fuller for longer – an ideal source of fuel for mobile pros. Some examples include fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, fish, poultry, nuts and whole grains.

Health & safety point s

While taking sufficient food breaks is one of the first steps to being more nutritional, this cannot happen without being aware of the health & safety considerations involved. “Always ensure you have dusted down and washed hands prior to consuming food in the salon environment,” advises Elissa Newton. “If there is not a staff section, opt to sit as far away from the working area as possible, to promote good hygiene in nail treatments and because vapours in the air from nail processes can be absorbed by food and drinks.” Elissa doesn’t offer foods such as biscuits to clients while at the nail desk; instead opting for wrapped chocolate for special occasions. She also provides clients with covers for their drinks mugs to avoid them consuming dust after excessive filing or E-filing processes.

By the age of 12, Nathan was experimenting with their own nail styles as an outlet for their identity and gender exploration. After trying a number of vocations, admitting that the nail industry ‘was the only industry to keep me interested’, Nathan moved to Bristol and was offered the opportunity to enrol on a fully funded nail course, before launching successful home nail studio, Buff Bar Bristol.

Marginalised people are often underrepresented, not heard, seen or referenced, yet can make an incredible contribution to an industry’s history, culture and value. I was keen to use my experience to help others and ignite conversations surrounding industry inclusion, so launched IYH – an initiative which has been, and always will be, led by the people that need it.”

The premise IYH is creating a pipeline of diverse talent by offering a oneyear training course, with support from a number of industry brands and organisations. “IYH provides connections to receive industry recognised qualifications, and offers its own education, resources, equipment, networking events and mentoring schemes so its mentees can start their own nail art business,” Nathan reveals. “On successful completion, the trainees will 34 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

However, I cannot understand the full complexities and nuances of all marginalised people,” they reveal. “I need to constantly learn and conduct research to ensure my work is relevant and successful.” Nathan spends much of their time engaging with industry partners and exploring ways they can support the project and its mentees. “I work alongside a fundraiser and business consultant to find suitable funding and to write funding bids,” they share. “This person has also helped me sketch an initial business plan and create a safeguarding policy. On a daily basis, I work on the programme structure, partnerships, mentee outreach, research and development, social media management and more. Enrolled on the IYH pilot programme are Nicola (‘Ginger’) and Marcia (‘Jiggz’). Friends for almost two decades, the duo met as colleagues, and share a dream of launching a business together; an inclusive space for nail services. “We are both committed to welcoming people from all walks of life, and to accommodate them and their needs as much as possible,” explains Nicola, who is neurodivergent and wishes to work in a calm, mindful space that is judgement-free. “We had an idea of what we wanted to achieve from our Jiggz&Ginger nail business, but were unsure how to make it happen, which is where IYH stepped in.” Nicola and Marcia initially contacted Nathan via Instagram, and they offered support and the opportunity to be part of the IYH pilot. “I currently work for a large chain grocery store where I feel really underappreciated, unheard and that I am just a number,” shares Marcia. “Through IYH, I am realising my potential, discovering things about myself and learning so much. I finally feel that I am valued, have a voice and the power to do so much.”

“IYH supports me where I find obstacles, and has introduced me to new methods to overcome my difficulties,” adds Nicola. “The programme has made me feel worthy, included, and part of a tailor-made experience, as one size definitely does not fit all.” The duo has been working on a studio space for Jiggz&Ginger; laying flooring, building their own nail desks and designing an aesthetic, which they both deem as ‘so rewarding’. “The programme has had such a positive effect, personally and professionally,” shares Marcia. “I am learning new things about myself, and my family can see that I am happier than ever. Nathan throws me in at the deep end but guides me so well, which is a great way for me to learn.” “Being part of the IYH project has enabled me to believe I can achieve anything,” adds Nicola. “It has reduced my self-doubt and fears concerning lack of financial support, time management and decision making. Marcia and I feel blessed and grateful to be a part of IYH and hope to pass its generosity on in the future.”

HOW TO PRICE YOUR SERVICES TO MAKE PROFIT

appy New Year, nail bosses! As January is a time for reflection and new beginnings, I’d like to invite you to reconnect with the long-term goals of your business.

Did you dream of freedom and flexibility, with a four-day week and a fancy car on the drive? What’s the reality saying? Did you have the annual post-Christmas week in bed, worrying about the monthly bills? Is the four-day week looking more like six? Does a lunch break sound like a distant fantasy? Your day-to-day reality is a mirror of your business numbers. If you’re not charging your clients enough, you’ll always feel stuck on a hamster wheel. You’ll find it hard to say no, and the wellintended boundaries around what hours you work will disappear, because you won’t be able to turn down the extra money.

“Ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to pricing. In fact, it’s That will have a ripple effect on personal life, because the a one-way ticket to burnout, feeling your little time you have left will be undervalued and building resentment spent chasing your tail, trying to catch up on life admin, for your clients, the industry, and even resting and eating a decent yourself. The sooner you focus your meal – if you’re lucky. might be thinking, ‘this is attention on the numbers, the allYoua bit doom and gloom for the new year’, but that’s not my sooner your reality will intention. I want you to understand that pricing is so much change for the better.” more than just the www.bossyoursalon.com /bossyoursalon @bossyoursalon 36 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

numbers on your website. It has a very real impact on your life, both now and in the future. But the good news is, this is all in your control, and it’s easier than you think.

Here are some pointers to get you going, starting with what not to do… • Get your head out of the sand Ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to pricing. In fact, it’s a one-way ticket to burnout, feeling undervalued and building resentment for your clients, the industry, and even yourself. The sooner you focus your attention on the numbers, the sooner your reality will change for the better. • Don’t do ‘the done thing’ I’ve taught around 13,000 people about pricing, and when I first surveyed them about how they calculated their prices, an eye-watering 80% said they’d copied their competitors, or pulled them out of thin air. I get it, as I did exactly the same when I started out. I figured that I didn’t want to be the cheapest, but surely if I plonked myself somewhere just above that, then I’d have a steady queue of clients banging my door down. Spoiler alert: it didn’t happen. • Give yourself some grace No one taught you this. Or even worse, someone from a brand handed you a ‘recommended pricing’ sheet, or an educator told you to do some ‘competitor research’, and you probably did your best with the (less than ideal) information you were given. Instead of feeling daft or kicking yourself for not magically knowing business or pricing strategy, give yourself a break and chalk the past up to experience. So that’s what not to do, but where do you go next? I run a free online masterclass called, ‘How To Overcome The 5 Most Common Pricing Mistakes’. It’ll change the way you think about pricing forever. Oh, and it’s completely free and there’s no camera on, so you can rock up in your new Christmas PJs if you fancy. Check out upcoming sessions and register via www.bossyoursalon.com/masterclass. And when you’re ready to dive in and perfect your nail prices so that they’re profitable and personalised to you (and not Sue down the road), check out my pricing calculator, Boss Your Profits, at: www.bossyoursalon.com/bossyourprofits Happy pricing!

Step 1 Choose three blue gel polish shades of various intensities, and paint the lightest one over the entire nail. Cure, then choose the slightly darker shade and use a fine liner brush to paint wavy lines from the cuticle area towards the centre of the nail. Cure, then repeat with the darkest blue shade and cure again. Next, use a dark grey gel polish with a fine liner brush to paint the outline of Flounder. I use grey, and not black, so that I can manipulate the shape and lines as I add colour. Step 2 Add colour to the body of Flounder using yellow and dark blue gel polish shades. Cure between each colour application to prevent the shades from running into one another. Step 3 Use a white gel polish shade and fine liner brush to add depth to the design. Blend any harsh lines using a shading brush, and cure when you are happy with the result. Step 4 Outline the shape and features of Flounder using a dark grey or black gel polish shade and fine liner brush. Cure, then apply a top coat of choice and cure to finish.

Step 3 I chose a nude gel polish shade for the skin tones, a dark brown for Eric’s hair, a warm red for Ariel’s hair and a light blue for their clothing. Paint within the lines, curing between each colour application to prevent the colours from bleeding. Step 4 Using a white gel paint and nail art brush, create eye and mouth shapes on each character and cure. Step 5 Apply your chosen eye colour (I used blue) and cure, before outlining the facial features using a dark grey or black gel polish and fine liner brush. Cure. Step 6 Add highlights to the characters using a white gel paint. I envisaged the light being above the characters, so added highlights to their hair. Smooth out harsh lines using a shading brush. Cure, then apply top coat and cure to finish.

Bubbles Step 1 Dilute a deep blue gel polish shade with a clear gel polish and apply one coat to the nail. Do not cure. Step 2 Decant a small amount of clear gel polish onto a nail art palette and use a dotting tool to apply onto the uncured blue base in dots of various sizes. A bubble effect will start to appear. Cure once you are happy with the look. If desired, use a white gel paint with a fine liner brush to add highlights to the bubbles.

Choice matters Are you choosing the right gel product to suit your client’s nail needs? Take a look at key gel types & their benefits in Scratch’s handy roundup…

W

hether your client is seeking a sculpted, salonstyle enhancement, extreme nail look or simply a hard-wearing overlay, the gel system has properties to suit. Boasting a thicker viscosity than gel polish, the potted formula that is applied with a separate brush is often referred to as ‘hard gel’, owing to its strong, hard nail finish. Many gels require file-off removal, but infills are most desirable and save time at the nail desk. But how do you choose a gel to suit your client’s nail needs? “I determine what gel type is suited to a client via a thorough assessment of their nails, and by asking the client questions about their habits and nail type,” comments Halo Platinum VIP, Lucy Mold of @nblnailsbylucy. “I will ask if the natural nails break easily, and will determine whether the nails are brittle, ridged or weak.” There are several considerations to make when deciding what gel to use on a client’s nails. “So much of what we do as nail techs is situational, so it is good practice to carry out a consultation with the client about their nails before starting the service,” agrees En Vogue educator, Mary Ellon Balance of @creative.ballance.inc. “The gel you choose depends on their natural nail condition or the length of nail they desire, and whether they want to grow their natural nails or wish for instant length. “Other things to consider when determining what to use on your client is what they do for a living, how often they can book in for maintenance, and if they have medical conditions that could interfere with the nail enhancement, such as psoriasis, auto-immune issues or allergies.” “I find that hard gel is more suited to longer nails or clients who have a very hands-on job and need extra strength,” shares The GelBottle brand ambassador, Learnah Starbuck of @polishedbylearnahstarbuck. “Hard gel is ideal for clients who want to extend their nail length and infill longer nails to allow for Learnah Starbuck super-strong enhancements. I love that it is so strong and I can create extra length with a perfect structure.”

TECH TALK

“I use hard gels with varying degrees of viscosity throughout my nail services. I choose self-levelling hard gels for infills, because if the prep is properly done, it can save time when finish filing,” comments En Vogue educator, Mary Ellon Ballance. “I tend to use modelling gels for full sets, because I like to take my time and work the gel to create a proper structure, rather than worrying about product flooding the cuticle. The pliability of the client’s natural nail will often determine the viscosity of the gel that is chosen, so that the client benefits from a durable nail enhancement with a natural feel.”

42 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

“Hard gel is suited to clients who seek a long nail, but have brittle or damaged natural nails. Gel is strong and will last well on these nail types,” comments Justyna Pryke, gel specialist & owner of Indulge Nails & Beauty, Leeds.

I felt extremely honoured to teach at the same campus as people I admire, such as Gabo Kovacs. During my time in Toulouse, I was interviewed for a French newspaper and TV channel. Following my time in France, I flew to Athens, Greece to teach a three-day course at Infinity Nail Academy, hosted by Giota Dempegioti and Giota Iliopoulou. The trip was a huge source of inspiration and I met such talented nail professionals, including Aleksia Duros, who created this colourful nail design after my seminar

Teaching in France

From Greece, I rushed back to the UK to teach at Nail Safari. Alongside me on the education line-up was my teacher, Barbara Újvári, and her sister, Krisztina Újvári, as well as Kirsty Meakin, Hazel Dixon, and my mentor, Olena Oezman. Nail Safari was a beautiful event, hosted by Alex Fox, Marian Newman, Jennie Nippard and Catriona Leith. After it ended, I returned to London to teach my last Avant-Garde Nail course in London for 2022.

Next steps This year, I will be travelling across the globe to teach my Avant-Garde nail class and some new courses. I have plans to travel to 12 countries so far; Italy, Spain, France, UK, America, Poland, Hungary, Ireland, Guatemala, Portugal, Australia and Greece. I love that I am given so many opportunities to spread my knowledge and help shape the next generation of nail artists.

Team talk

At the beginning of 2022, I put together a competition team, and I trained them to compete in most categories at Nailympia London last October.

Annie Pham

Mino’s team at Nailympia London

Team member, Annie Pham, achieved both the Winner of Winners and UK Top Tech cups in Division 2. Annie is one of the kindest people I have ever met, with such a pure heart, and she is loved by everyone she meets. We met at Nail Safari in 2021 and after the event, she enrolled on one of my training courses.

Annie reminds me of myself. She is so dedicated to her work and practices for many hours – often well into the night! I saw her passion from early on and have recently appointed her as my first educator under the Mino Vo London brand. She assisted me at Nail Safari 2022 and will be travelling with me to classes in various countries this year. We are working on some classes for Annie to offer, and I know her passion and talent will take her very far in this industry.

I have decided to take some time off from competing, in order to deliver the best training courses that I can. I find it so rewarding to train techs who go on to achieve greatness in competitions, and I will continue to encourage my team to compete, as it helps with focus and upskilling.

Boo Does Nails

Location: Digbeth, Birmingham During lockdown, Beckie Jones made the bold decision to open her own nail art studio when restrictions eased. “It was a risk I needed to take, as I was looking to carve out a space in which I could be free to do what I wanted, and an area for other pros to do the same.” Beckie qualified in nail techniques in 2017 and is proud to offer gel polish services, Aprés Gel X Extensions and luxury pedis from her ‘inclusive, safe space’. She works full-time, running the salon and tending to the needs of clients, and is joined by self-employed nail techs, Grace and Millie. Describing her style as ‘eclectic, cutesy, detailed and quirky’, Beckie’s nail space is bright and inviting, with plenty of Instagrammable features. “It’s hard to pinpoint a theme for my salon,” she smiles. “It’s a mish-mash of various styles and eras. The colour scheme takes inspiration from the 1970s, some of the furniture is mid-century and the other elements are quirky or modern. I’ve worked hard to curate a space win which everybody can feel relaxed and welcome. Peach is such a happy colour and its use on the walls is the first thing people notice when they visit. I feel very fortunate to work at Boo Does Nails every day, to show it to the world, and receive happy vibes in return.” The salon’s colour scheme was inspired by one of Beckie’s nail creations. “I didn’t really have a plan for the nails I was creating, so grabbed the colours I was drawn to and fell in love with the combination. In the salon, I also knew I wanted a rainbow arch feature with shelves underneath it and lots of plants and prints.” Ever-creative, Beckie hopes to teach small workshops and support fellow nail techs on their nail styling journey, while creating fun and detailed nails on a part-time basis. @boodoesnails

Nailed On Location: Wrexham, North Wales Brittany Bevan was offering make-up services from her home salon before she decided to expand her treatment menu and train in nail services in 2019. She is adept in L&P enhancements, builder gel, gel polish and full cover tip application, as well as hand-painted artistry, which she offers from her bright salon space. “My décor is representative of my creativity,” Brittany explains. “I wanted it to reflect a fun feel, contrasted with black elements. My theme is ‘anything goes’ to match the quirky, mismatched style of my salon. The accessories are great conversation starters and the environment reflects how creative I am, and what clients can expect from my nail work.” Brittany’s brand of choice is Dalí Artistic, and she reveals that the majority of her clients book appointments with her due to her nail art skills. “Clients love that I can paint whatever they like on their nails,” she shares. “Nothing is too much trouble. Everyone is unique in their own way, and I pride myself on my personality and the ability to be a friendly face on a hard day for some of my clients.” The thoughtful tech works alone from her salon, but is keen to add a treatment room tailored to individuals who suffer with sensory overload or anxiety. “I would also love to open an academy to train budding nail techs, offering in-depth courses to support their journey.” /nailed0n 52 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

EDUCATIONEVENT

CLAW T

The third edition of Nail Safari combined education sessions from big industry names with a sprinkle of animal magic at Shepreth Wildlife Park in Herts. ALEX FOX reveals all…

he third Nail Safari education event, hosted 21-25 November 2022, was a resounding success and gave much more than expected to both organisers and the ‘nail rangers’ in attendance. “It was one of the best experiences of my life,” enthuses Danielle Brindley, who joined the Tiger Team, headed by nail educator, Catriona Leith of The Nail Studio Cambridge, and won the Winner of Winners trophy at the closing awards. “I came back to work with a renewed excitement about nails and a greater amount of knowledge. The experience has helped me professionally, Alex Fox personally and creatively, and the networking opportunity was fantastic. My cheeks are still hurting from the laughs, and I’m pining for my Nail Safari friends, so much so that I’m still wearing the apron!

“I was terrified at the start of the week, but by day five I didn’t want to go home. I would advise anybody who has the opportunity to go, even for a day, to jump at the chance. But I’m telling you, you’ll get a dose of FOMO if you don’t stay for the whole week!

Danielle Brindley

As a mum and wife, I struggle to find time for myself, and although the Nail Safari experience involved a lot of hard work, it was like I pressed a reboot button on myself, which has resulted in many positive changes.”

The challenges of the economic climate meant that, for the first time in three seasons, one, two, three and five-day attendance packages were offered. This supported nail artists who could not leave children or their businesses for five days. An outstanding lineup of educators, all award-winning, visited across the week and meant that delegates had high expectations. The event did not disappoint, as each educator delivered

their class in their own style and flavour, while presenting many ‘aha’ moments to the room. Delegates were split into three teams, each represented by a different colour and led by one of the organisers. They competed for paw points throughout the event, given out by educators and organisers for achievements. Team Tiger, in orange, was led by Catriona Leith, Team Tamarin in blue led by Jennie Nippard, and Team Red Wolf in red led by Alex Fox. Nail Safari co-founder, Marian Newman BEM, offered science notes in two Q&A sessions, a ribbon hunt gave the techs a quick run around the zoo to clear their minds, and every lunch break afforded enough time to wander the zoo to gain inspiration. “Nail Safari is such a unique experience,” Marian shares. “A group of nail pros of differing skillsets, from a newbie who may be a bit intimidated to a skilled veteran educator, all come together to share and talk ‘nails’ all day, every day. Each day started with a walk through the zoo, with various animals taking a healthy interest in the passing nail kits and techs. Unique skills were presented by each teacher and everyone was keen to help, support and share tips with one another.

“To anyone thinking they haven’t been in the industry long enough, they’re too old or it’s too far, I’ve been qualified for 18 months, am 64 years old and travelled 16,500kms, from Queensland, Australia, to be at this year’s Nail Safari. It was worth every penny. Whatever you do and wherever you do it, if it’s nail-related you need to attend Nail Safari! Apart from the obvious enhancement of skills, I have enjoyed networking and my confidence has grown.” Clare Kirby, nail ranger 54 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

WHY NAIL SAFARI? • • • • • • • • •

Presents like-minded people who love nails. Community feel. Learn in a safe & fun environment. Meet top class nail experts. Share your story. Network & make friends. Immerse in nail techniques. Stretch your skills & learn new ones. Great environment for wellbeing.

“With troubling times upon us, it was electric to be part of such a positive, energetic week of fun, education, networking and bonding. This is far more than a week of ‘just nail education’. I think for all involved, we can truly say it’s a powerful week of comraderie, friendship-building and tackling different issues that may be suffered both at and away from the nail desk. One big thing I’ve taken away from this event is that no matter who you are or what walk of life you come from, this is an empowering week that brings a group of talented, driven and motivated people together. And what is really special, is that we got to experience this in the amazing, peaceful surroundings of Shepreth Wildlife Park. Highlights for me were the ‘circle of love’ sessions, which enabled team leaders to learn about the rangers. It was lovely to hear stories about what brought them to Nail Safari and how they have overcome challenges. I’m so excited to see what next year will bring.” Catriona Leith, team leader “Shepreth Wildlife Park, which is heavily focused on conservation and education, embraces Nail Safari being hosted there as it supports its purposeful work. For five-day attendees, animal experiences such as feeding meerkats, baby capybara or getting a high five from a red panda, make this event stand out from any other nail education on the planet. It really is a remarkable week with the biggest ‘feelgood’ factor ever!” Keen to share the power that is generated from the event, co-founder, Jennie Nippard, relays: “It’s hard to describe how incredible Nail Safari is. It is a wild week, jampacked with high levels of education, in the most beautiful setting. It brings an opportunity for nail techs to come together and share their passion for the nail industry. “Although we work with people day in and day out, being a nail tech can sometimes be isolating, so it’s an incredible opportunity for people to get together and share their experiences and learning journey. When that much passion and dedication is unleashed in one room, nothing short of magic follows. To walk into your classroom past lemurs, tigers, monkeys and coatis is an inspirational start to any day of learning. “We are incredibly lucky to have such talented, multi awardwinning educators delivering the classes and we watch them bring out the best in each and every person. Nail Safari is truly about sharing love. It’s not competitive; it’s simply about learning, building each other up and becoming the best you can be. Everybody is welcome, regardless of brands you work with. I’m so proud to be part of this event, as it just keeps getting better and better. To see such an incredible experience develop and evolve over the years is really wonderful. To think that it started out as a jovial conversation on Alex’s 50th birthday, we have now, four years later, seen this

event powerfully change lives for the better. I feel so lucky to be part of this little piece of magic. Thank you to the Nail Safari team, to all the educators and to the rangers who came with open minds and hearts, and left having shared and grown as people and as nail professionals.” The magic and evolution of Nail Safari has become an intrigue to those who have supported it through its social media posts. “I’m so happy to be part of a new wave of learning and development for the nail industry,” enthuses co-founder, Alex Fox. “I love to see nail skills stretched with new techniques and ideas shared. However, most of all, I’m rewarded most by Nail Safari’s ability to build up confidence alongside learning. Friendship and support is what most of us quietly ache for in our lives, and Nail Safari delivers this in abundance. All of us left happy, fulfilled and refreshed. This is a learning experience like no other and one I hope continues to bring fresh and exciting education to the nail industry with its sprinkles of love.”

“It was an absolute honour to meet and be educated by talented, world champion educators. I have been in the industry for over 20 years and there is no other opportunity that compares to this intense week of education. The friends I’ve made will be for life, and every one of them was helpful, supportive, friendly and forthcoming with advice. It was a pleasure to be in the company of everyone who attended.” Heather Maybin, nail ranger SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK 55

DAY 1

8.30am – Arrival & welcome from Alex Fox 10am – Rebecca Isaac, Scratch Stars Hall of Fame One Stroke Artist – The Wild Side of One Stroke Rebecca guided the group through how to mix and apply gel paints in the creation of a parrot and tropical flower scene across four nail tips. During the class, a parrot was completed, then the flower demo was watched and delegates were invited to complete the design in the evening as homework. This homework was then sent to Rebecca to assess, and she gave points towards prizes. 2pm – Kirsty Meakin, globally renowned nail artist – 3D Flower Illusion With the 3D flower trending all over Instagram and TikTok of late, Kirsty chose to show how she creates this nail style on a tip. Using the reverse technique, Kirsty walked the class through the stages of creating the initial rose, before layering around it with clear gel and various shades of pink to give it depth and movement.

“I’m so grateful for what I learned and impressed with everything and everyone who shared their expertise. Big thanks to the Nail Safari team, who made my dream come true. I love you all and will definitely sign up again.” Anya Nguyen, nail ranger

DAY 2

An intense day of learning, Olena delivered a wealth of expert ideas to elevate a nail tech’s work and competition career.

“The experience is like a rollercoaster; it shakes you about, turns you upside down and challenges your stamina, but it’s exhilarating and it changes you. The Dani who came out of Nail Safari is not the same one who went in. I found a new family, a renewed love for nails and a thirst for more knowledge.” Dani Bailey, nail ranger

DAY 3

10am-1pm & 2-5pm – Mino Vo, Nailympia Winner of Winners Champion & highly decorated medallist – Avant-Garde Extreme Nail Mino was invited to deliver his class on extreme nail styling in Avant-Garde nail shapes. Bringing his gentle demeanour into the classroom was a refreshing element and coupled with his positive energy, Mino commanded the room with ease. With the support of nail ranger, Annie Pham, Mino guided delegates through the stages of creating an extreme nail. The day flew by and so Mino requested that the nails were decorated for that evening’s homework.

EDUCATIONEVENT

DAY 4

9.30am-12.30pm – Andreea Simona Ignat, Nailympia Top UK Tech Div 3 winner – 3D Plasteline Roses The Thursday morning session was presented by Andreea, who took the opportunity to demonstrate how to create lifelike roses on the end of an orangewood stick with plasteline. Taking the class carefully through the steps of this mixed media art form, Andreea had everyone building roses in various colours. Bringing clever tips to the table, Andreea showed how to make the roses look realistic, with a few smart moves and the right brush. “When Alex asked me in 2021 to teach at the second edition, I was delighted and scared, as I had to talk to a big group of people and I knew it would be hard, but I did it,” shares Andreea. “In 2022, at the third event, I was amazed how many techs came for a second time to see me teach, this time creating 3D plasteline roses. Nail Safari is definitely a ‘must try’ experience, especially when you get to see amazing nail educators and the beautiful animals living at the zoo.” 2-5pm – Hazel Dixon, multiple Scratch Stars & Nailympia winner – Character Art with Gel Paints Hazel chose the parrot, Nico, from animated film Rio, to paint across a nail tip. Using her well-structured process of breaking up the nail into a grid, Hazel taught each stage of creation, from building up to design to completion of the character.

“I had the most amazing week of education with wonderful people. I knew no one, and have now made friends for life. Nail Safari is a safe, positive, happy space. I have gained confidence in my abilities as a nail tech and learned so much. Seeing the animals at the zoo was as amazing as the education! Thank you Nail Safari... roll on 2023!” Laura McInulty, nail ranger

DAY 5 9.30am-12noon – Krisztina Újvári – Winter Landscape Scene Krisztina took the first class and showcased a snow scene to celebrate the festive season. This demo brought to life a beautiful textured cottage in the snow with shading details, fine line work, ombrés, highlighting and texturising, to give the nails a 3D appearance. What looked to be a simple scene was taken to a whole to a new level of styling, thanks to her fine and advanced art techniques. 12.30-3pm – Barbara Újvári – Reverse Dual Tip Technique Barbara took to the nail desk for the last training session of the day, and closed the event with a strong and accomplished class overflowing with advanced techniques. The rangers were shown how to extend the nail and add a crisp smile line with a glitter ombré tip on a Russian almond nail. After the class wrapped up, nail rangers were invited to wander the zoo in order to find team coloured ribbons that had been hung from the trees. This treasure hunt is a fun, team-building exercise. Team Tamarin was awarded with neon wigs for a runway show, which would close Nail Safari late on the final afternoon. This presented an opportunity for the teams to wear the nails they’d fashioned throughout the week and to have some fun together.

Award-winning mobile nailist, CLARE WOODCOCK, shares top tips for making a success out of working on the move…

WINNER

ABOUT CLARE WOODCOCK

Clare Woodcock is founder of The Nail Club, a mobile beauty business based in Sunbury upon Thames, Surrey. She began her nail industry journey in 2017, following 20 years in the music and entertainment sector as a senior PR manager and event producer. Clare trained with Gelish and has since expanded her nail and beauty knowledge with Bio Sculpture, Nouveau Lashes and HD Brows. She was awarded gold at the British Hair & Beauty Awards 2021 for Mobile Therapist of the Year, and scooped the Scratch Stars Mobile Nailist of the Year title in 2022. Clare also works as director of communications for the Federation of Nail Professionals (FNP).

Starting out: practical pointers for mobile nail pros

D

you want to make the move to working as a mobile nail pro, but you’re not sure how? As the reigning Scratch Stars Mobile Nailist of the Year, let me help you…

You may have heard salon or studio-based techs admitting that they tried working mobile but found it too hard, or that it was a challenge to carry a kit around. However, there are many benefits to working on a mobile basis, such as varied workdays, flexible hours and, importantly, you see sunlight, get fresh air and can blast your favourite music or listen to inspiring podcasts on your journeys to and from clients. In many instances, you build great bonds with your clients as they welcome you into their homes. There has been an increase in flexible working since the pandemic, and home services have become more convenient for the working professional. They can enjoy a pedicure while on a Zoom meeting – and their colleagues don’t even have to know! But there are some practical points to note before you start working on a mobile basis. Consider what your selling point is. Are you aiming to offer speedy or luxurious services to your clients? Can you carry out your treatments safely within a client’s house? For instance, if you offer L&P acrylic enhancements, do you need a dust extractor and good ventilation? How will you sanitise your tools? It’s imperative to comply with health, safety and hygiene protocols to ensure you stick to the high standards that our industry relies upon. This will help you to evaluate how you transport your kit and what you need to take with you. Whatever your selling point, you will need a good quality, practical kit bag. I use a Zuca bag, which is sturdy, flexible and not too bulky. You need to make sure you can transport and manoeuvre your kit without causing strain or injury, so assess how far you will need to

58 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

carry it each day, and whether you will be offering treatments in places where there may be stairs or limited parking.

Business matters

It is important to think of your mobile work as a business, rather than a hobby. Don’t de-value yourself because you don’t have a premises. You are a professional who has completed training, earned a qualification and is insured, and so you must think as a businessperson. Things to do: • Create a business name and register with HMRC for self assessment tax. • Set your prices. Think about the products you are using and the amount you spend running your business. How far will you travel and how much will it cost? Note how much you wish to earn per hour, and add that onto your business costs and cost per service. Think about how long it takes you to drive to your clients, set up and pack down, and factor that time into your prices. Charge your worth. • Insure your kit. Check whether your car insurance will cover business claims. • Consider how you will keep yourself safe. Will you only work in certain postcode areas? Will someone know where you are at all times? • Decide whether you want to wear a uniform or what your ‘look’ might be. I opt for a smart-casual look and usually wear black. • Create a website and/or good online profile and get an online booking system in place. • Assess if your business reflects your image and what you want to achieve. Until next month,

Clare

Diary of a distributor LAYLA TOURH, UK distributor of Entity products, shares tales from a trip to the Dominican Republic for an education & networking event

P

unta Cana called for global representatives of the Entity Beauty brand, as the glamorous destination on the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic was the setting for a three-day education and distribution conference.

Designed to inform attendees about upcoming Entity products, as well as polish up techniques and network with likeminded individuals, the UK saw representation from Layla Tourh, founder of The Creative Beauty Group, distributor of Entity in the UK. She jetted out of beachy Bournemouth to the sandy shores of Punta Cana, and shares her diary from the event, which ran from 30 November to 2 December 2022…

Today’s the day Entity representatives, comprising world class educators and master distributors, gathered at the Hard Rock Hotel to indulge in education and work towards re-certification. I was so excited to meet fellow distributors of Entity Beauty from all over the world, and knew it would be great to witness innovative product launches. Best of all, the event took place in a destination that boasts 29-degree heat and glorious sunshine.

I’ll meet you at the pool! Ahead of the event, we were sent the agenda which was packed full of demonstrations, assessments and exciting announcements to look forward to. However, before delegates could perfect their skills and learn new ones, everyone was invited to attend a welcome meeting beside the pool. Not everyone was able to attend this optional event due to flying schedules, but I loved catching up with familiar faces and getting to know people in person, rather than via a social media platform. We were each given a branded tote bag, and inside it was a white t-shirt with a brightly coloured Punta Cana logo printed on it. Also inside the bag was a drinking cup, which I took to the pool with me when I could, and a notebook for the event.

oloured or artistic nails are often described as accessories; completing and complementing an ensemble. But now, the tables have turned and it’s nails that have inspired a series of accessories by Kirsty Meakin, in collaboration with Hartlepool-based goldsmith, Mark Lloyd. “Once they’re gone, they’re gone,” shares Mark. “We may make more, or we may make something else!” The pieces were oxidised to enhance the look of the product and hallmarked by the Goldsmiths Hall assay office in London. “Kirsty and I wanted to ensure that the products were handcrafted using precious metal. Our goal was to offer a premium product.”

The Kirsty Meakin X Mark Lloyd collection came about after Kirsty’s business partner and friend, Adam Bouabda, worked with Mark on a bespoke pair of earrings to gift to the nail artist on her birthday. He requested that they were created in the shape of the gel polish bottles from Kirsty’s own range of branded products. Their creation led to excitement from Kirsty’s social media followers, and the idea to launch a jewellery collection was born.

“My favourite part of this collaboration has been watching Mark handcraft the individual pieces, and witnessing the transformation of raw materials into amazing products,” reveals Kirsty. “I love the creative process of any kind of artwork and it has been fascinating to see our ideas come to life.

“As soon as I met Kirsty, I thought she was a brilliant person to collaborate with,” comments Mark Lloyd. “She is full of enthusiasm for what she does, which has made the partnership very exciting.”

Natural nail specialist & mother of two, Sophia Stanley, reveals her child-friendly nail space & why adding a play area has enticed a greater clientele CALLIE ILEY REPORTS

ffectionately titled ‘Mama Mani Nails’, Sophia Stanley’s business operates from her home in Walsall, with a focus on services that can be enjoyed by clients while their children are occupied.

Sophia attained her nail qualification in summer 2021, after the birth of her second child, and was keen to start a business that would offer avenues for communication. “I was diagnosed with post-natal depression after the birth of my first child, and had to leave my job,” she shares. “This made me feel isolated and cut off from the world, so I set up my nail business as it afforded flexibility, and because I was seeking some company.” Mama Mani Nails offers gel polish mani and pedis, builder gel services, spa pedicures and facials. The home setup allows Sophia to work around the needs of her toddlers, and be accommodating to clients with similar needs. “Many clients value the personal service they receive, as social anxiety has prevented them from visiting busy salon spaces,” she reveals. “Some of my clients have expressed that they love having their treatments in a family home, as it is cosy and feels as if they’re visiting a friend.”

The home space features a nail desk, treatment bed and play area for children. Sophia Stanley “Having a child-friendly space wasn’t a decision I made consciously,” Sophia continues. “I’m a mum, I just did it! I’m very family-focused so wanted a safe place for clients to visit, eliminating the need to find childcare. “Being a parent can be incredibly lonely for some, so I provide a welcoming space for a chat and treatment. I have all the provisions of a client’s own home available; there are toys, streaming services, two toddlers to play with, and if a client’s child needs nappies, wipes, snacks or juice, then I have plenty!

“Routine “I’ve had clients who were unaware of my is imperative to setup, asking if they can make a child-friendly child-friendly rearrange their appointment due to issues, and they have been business work. Some days childcare thrilled when I say that they can bring are harder than others, their chlldren along,” Sophia beams. “Children can’t be paused, so as and while I offer a parents we schedule our lives around them and their needs. Being able to variety of appointment bring them to Mama Mani Nails to play times, my children can help ease a parent’s day.” come first.” Sophia acknowledges that offering child-friendly

appointments doesn’t suit every tech. “Some days can be very stressful, as my children want my full attention. They have temper tantrums, as do my clients’ children, so it can get loud. There are always toys and crumbs to clean up after, on top of the usual post-appointment clean-up routine,” she shares. “However, it works for my clients and I, and if you’ve got the space, time and patience, then I’d recommend child-friendly appointments as it has allowed so many of my clients to practice selfcare regularly. “Routine is imperative to make a childfriendly business work. Some days are harder than others, and while I offer a variety of appointment times, my children come first –

and they can be very unpredictable! I’m lucky that most of my clients are either parents or retired, so they understand and are flexible,” Sophia notes. “My husband has been so supportive and is a very hands-on parent, which makes my work life a lot easier. I’m so grateful to him and the clients who have supported me so far.” Looking to the future, Sophia would like to upgrade her workspace and further promote the child-friendly salon concept. “My clients deserve something special and I love being able to provide a great salon experience for them to enjoy.” /mamamaninails

“Having a child-friendly space wasn’t a decision I made consciously. I’m a mum, I just did it! I’m very family-focused so wanted a safe place for clients to visit, eliminating the ee to fi c c re.” CLIENT TALK

Becky Louise is a mother of two and a regular client of Mama Mani Nails. She comments: “Sophia is so friendly and welcoming, and I love that she offers appointments from the comfort of her home, as it makes the experience relaxing and enjoyable. Most importantly, I don’t have to worry about childcare, as children are welcomed. “My daughters love coming to my nail appointments, as they enjoy playing with the vast range of toys and with Sophia’s children.” Fellow client, Rosie Clarke, agrees. “I love being able to take my daughter with me when I get my nails done. When we’re there, she gets to play with Sophia’s children and it’s something she really looks forward to. While she plays, I get to enjoy being pampered!”

INSURANCE POINTER

Jackie Randall, office manager at Lion Insurance Consultants, comments: “Liability insurance may not cover unattended children, but this varies with each insurer. However, Public Liability Insurance would cover a client or their child being injured in the salon space.

“Salon equipment could be covered under a salon policy, if the relevant section has been selected. Salons should consider if they can provide a safe environment for a child, especially if left unattended while the treatment is being carried out.”

Danny NY MANCHIP Scratch chats to DAN Exeter, about of Beau’s Beauty Box, rds win, career his Scratch Stars Awa nail industry… journey & love for the

Who – Danny Manchip of Beau’s Beauty Box What – Scratch Stars Home Salon of the Year 2022 award winner & Magpie Beauty brand partner Where – Exeter, Devon Why – A talented and personable home salon owner & nail stylist

What sparked your interest in nails? I worked in retail for 12 years and as I approached my 30th birthday, I re-evaluated my career choice. I’m a creative person and wanted to do a job that reflected this. I have followed Magpie Beauty educator, Sophie Hudd, on social media since she started her nail career. We were friends before she entered the nail world and I’ve watched her profile and skills grow. It was through watching her journey that I fell in love with the nail craft, and I reached out to Sophie to enquire about training. I booked my first nail course with her, and the rest is history!

WINNER

What are your career highlights to date? Moving to self-employment in July 2021 was the best decision I have made, and many highlights have involved featuring in Scratch magazine. Scratch is a big deal and I am grateful to have been featured multiple times. Winning the Scratch Stars Award for Home Nail Salon of the Year 2022 was an incredible feeling that I will never forget. Tell us about your home salon… I converted a small bedroom in my house into a nail studio. It is warm and inviting, and as I am a very organised person, all my nail products are in perfect order. Nothing is out of reach when I need it and my clients can see all the shades I offer.

What do you love about working in the nail industry? Being creative! I also enjoy working for myself and building my business, as it is so rewarding. I love the people I have met in the industry and tending to the nails of different clients. I’m a chatterbox, and love that my clients enjoy chatting with me. Who inspires you in the nail industry? Magpie Beauty educators, Sophie Hudd and Amanda Byrne, and the company MD, Sarah Shakespeare. Also Chantelle Vermont, co-founder of Clawgasmic, and new nail technicians who are passionate and eager to learn.

“I love the people I have met in the industry and tending to the nails of different clients.” 68 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

BOYZONE

What are your favourite products? Gel paints, as I do a lot of hand-painted nail art, as well as Magpie Beauty’s E-file and Give Me Strength structure gel. Why did you enter the Scratch Stars Awards? I listened to Scratch’s managing editor, Helena Biggs, on a Clawgasmic podcast episode, and she was encouraging people to seize the opportunity to enter, so I did! I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and experience more of the nail industry and the people within it. What does it mean to you to win a Scratch Stars Award? Winning a Scratch Star has really boosted my confidence. It means that what I am doing and how I am working has been recognised as the best in its category. The award has made me believe in myself more, as this industry can make you cast doubt upon yourself sometimes, because there is so much talent within it. There are very high standards to contend with, but there is space for everyone.

“Winning a Scratch Star has really boosted my confidence. It means that what I am doing and how I am working has been recognised as the best in its category.” What advice do you have for techs who wish to compete? It doesn’t matter if you don’t win, because you will still gain so much experience throughout the process. The only person who will stop you doing something is you.

What has been key to your success? I really do believe a big part of it is me, as I have stayed true to myself and my ethos. People can see my passion and kindness, and that I am willing to learn. Also, my retail experience has helped with the marketing and business areas of my role. What are your hopes for your future in nails? I’d love to own a chain of salons that offer a safe space for people from all walks of life. I want to try my hand at educating, as I’m so passionate about the industry and believe standards need to be raised. I would also like to create products that offer solutions to problems, and work towards a more sustainable industry. /beaus-beauty-box

ourteen competition categories across two days, with 114 nail artists taking 355 seats, is no mean feat. But it was the reality that dominated the Reforma district of Mexico City for Nailympia Mexico, 3-4 December 2022.

Five competitions were handed in for judging on the first morning, and the rest were live on the competition arena, which meant it was a tough schedule. However, competitors stepped up to the plate with just 15-minute restroom breaks between competitions. Eight countries were represented at the event, with entries from Chile, Argentina, Ireland, Poland, USA, Serbia, Mexico and Brazil. Organiser, Dafne Fernandez, whose love of nails and competition is apparent, took the Nailympia concept and set it alight for two days. The atmosphere was electric and, as if time stood still, everyone was living their nail dream in unison. It was true community working its magic and the idea of an international nail family was very real. If ever I observed an industry shift, it was during Nailympia Mexico. There is a change in the air in that part of the world and it is being pioneered by Dafne, her vision and her team. In my role as global director of Nailympia Competitions, I got to watch the region’s thirst for nail unity, competition, innovation and education blossom and pollinate, as we all immersed ourselves in nails. I cannot wait to experience this in 2023 and to feel that energy once more. It has made me so excited for the first two Nailympia competitions for 2023 in Düsseldorf, Germany and at Premiere Anaheim, USA. Together, in its respective locations, Nailympia is making a change; it’s driving skills, confidence and unity. Dafne concludes, “Nailympia Mexico has changed the lives of so many people, including me. As the host, I believe in challenges, effort, hard work and exceeding expectations, which Nailympia brings and more to everyone involved. During the twoday event, emotions were running high, with passion and perseverance that you could feel in the air as you went onto the arena. It’s amazing and funny to think that people believe doing nails is easy until they see what is produced on the competition floor. “It’s impressive to showcase how perfect and beautiful nails can be when crafted by competitors. I hear so many people celebrating the fact that their nail tech is competing in the ‘Olympics’ – and yes, Nailympia is the Olympics of nails! To see techs travelling around the world to participate is proof of the commitment not only to themselves, but to their students, business, clients and skills. Putting their heart and soul into competing is inspirational to observe and one of the things I love most about Nailympia Competitions.

ABOUT NOVALASH

NovaLash was established in the USA in 2004 by CEO, Sophy Ward, to provide safe and long-lasting eyelash extensions.

“With 19 years of experience, plus its investment in research and development, NovaLash has created a complete system that is proven to help lash Lauren Nesbit artists succeed in the industry,” shares Lauren Nesbit, business manager for NovaLash UK. “This system is a combination of physician-developed training, biocompatible techniques, patented flexible adhesives and safetytested products.” There are NovaLash certified artists in over 40 countries.

NovaLash Classic training is ideal for beginners and experienced lash artists wanting to learn NovaLash techniques. “Pre-requisites are steady hands and good eyesight,” says Lauren Nesbit. “Students will also need a treatment bed and lamp to carry out the required practice after class.

“Once they register, students will be provided with a training kit and manual. On the training day, the educator will teach the science behind the service, as well as how to provide safe, healthy and long-lasting lash extensions. The second half of the class is hands-on work, supervised by the educator.” Also available is the Classic Conversion course, and American Volume and London Volume courses for experienced lash artists.

WHY TRAIN? “Nail artists make great lash artists,” Lauren comments. “The skills that nail artists possess are many of the same skills that lash artists need; precision hand skills, patience, excellent vision and attention to detail. Clients who keep regular nail appointments can tie them in with their lash appointments.”

LOCATIONS There are six educators in the UK; Angelika Borsuk (Cornwall), Zoe Nichols (London and Bournemouth), Sophie Doughty (Felixstowe, Suffolk), Kate Baxter and Zoe McIntyre (Inverness), and Lindsay Chambers (Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow). Students can train in-person at one of these locations, or online. Bespoke, on-site training can also be offered for large groups.

READER OFFER! Register for training by 31 January 2023 and quote ‘Scratch’ to get £100 off the cost of a NovaLash course.

DURATION

Training is one day, with case studies required after this day. “Students are required to submit case studies to their trainer after class,” reveals Lauren. “Once these case studies have been completed, the student is NovaLash Certified, but there is usually a period of practice hours required prior to being ready to launch their services.” Beginners can return for an additional day of training at no extra cost, if they book it within 90 days of their original class.

ASSESSMENT Once the standard for NovaLash extensions is met, students will receive NovaLash certification. The courses are accredited and insured by Balens Insurance and after-class support is available for students via their trainer. “They can contact NovaLash by phone or email with any technical questions,” Lauren adds.

COST NovaLash’s Classic Training is £825 + VAT plus shipping, which includes a training manual and products. Alternatively, if a professional already offers lash extensions but would like to become NovaLash Certified, the Classic Conversion course is £390 + VAT plus shipping.

MET Explore the partnership between a nail polish brand & talented tech in honour of an exciting exhibition at New York’s Met Museum HELENA BIGGS REPORTS

J

ess Hannah has a flair for timelessness. The designer and maker of fine jewellery creates pieces for ‘living in and living with’; pieces that wearers can experience and enjoy, and that ignite conversation. Keen to extend these feelings to fingertips, she added a nail polish line to the J. Hannah portfolio, which attracted attention from The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art (‘The Met’); the largest art museum in the Americas. “Fine jewellery and nail polish go hand in hand,” Jess smiles. “Nail polish is the perfect accompaniment to a set of rings, and the two naturally flatter one another. Both jewellery and nail polish can make the everyday feel more luxe.” The Met approached Jess to create a nail polish set for its shop, inspired by The Costume Institute’s 2020 exhibition, About Time. “This theme felt close to home as it’s one that is ingrained in our brand ethos,” Jess explains. “We created a blurred timeline of fashion history in response, exploring the prompt with a toolkit of palettes, textures and symbols. “For that collaboration, I still looked to jewellery as both variable and constant,

The three lacquer shades are inspired by the luxurious colour palettes within the exhibition, including the jewel tones in Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger’s portrait of Welsh heiress, Ellen Maurice (1597). These richly pigmented and opulent polishes are titled Bijoux, Relic and Velour; two new shades and a relaunch of a J. Hannah favourite.

Concept to creation paying attention to the elements that evoked particular moments in time, and the elements that have been continuous. The five nail polish colours created were informed by this thought process and a black and white theme. This was all re-envisioned through the J. Hannah lens.” A second collaboration followed in October 2021, in line with the museum’s Surrealism Beyond Borders exhibition. The most recent polish launch, The Tudor Courts trio set, marks the third between J. Hannah and The Met, in celebration of The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England, an exhibition running until 8 January.

The Met gave Jess and her team room to explore when perfecting the hues. Bijou and Velour were inspired by Tudor red (the court colour) and the rich greens of natural mineral and vegetable pigments from that time. Relic, a golden yellow, was reintroduced as a representation of the gilded aspects of the Tudor age. “For The Tudor Courts trio, we were particularly drawn to the period’s tradition of miniatures,” Jess reveals. “These were tiny paintings that people would carry, often in lockets, to show others. We likened the idea of these tiny canvases and court miniature painters, to the handiwork adorned on nails.”

CREATIVECOLLABORATION

“We are happy to introduce the possibilities of nail art to a Met-goer, who may not have considered nail art as an artistic medium.” The team called upon talented LA-based nail pro, Tahvya Krok of @nailedbytav, to hand-paint recreations of the artworks showing at The Met’s Tudors exhibition. “Tahvya really understood the assignment,” Jess shares. “We believe her work exhibited the tradition of the tiny Tudor court paintings, and it was great to see how receptive The Met audience was to the nails as art. It is great to cross industries in this way, and we are happy to introduce the possibilities of nail art to a Met-goer, who may not have considered nail art as an artistic medium. “I love that elements of the nail style unveil the studious aura of the early illuminated manuscripts from the Tudor period,” Jess continues. “The text and charts that Tahvya has created are unexpected, and not what you would typically see in the nail art world. We felt that this finely mirrored our own refined approach to polish. The work is so detailed and impressive and, regardless of being on a nail, is undeniably to work of an artist.”

Polished perfection “We love that The Met is a wellspring of influences; it makes collaboration feel

immediate. Before the partnership began, The Met had been a source of inspiration for me on trips to New York,” Jess shares. “Many of the J. Hannah polish shades are inspired by artists’ palettes, or the aesthetic world of an artist; colours such as Ghost Ranch and Blue Nudes make direct nods to Georgia O’Keefe, Ives Klein and Henri Matisse. We are also inspired by the jewellery pieces housed by The Met, and love that working with the museum feels limitless. “Above all, we truly adore collaborating with an institution that is both dedicated to the lineage of canonised works, while simultaneously championing and supporting emerging designers. We hope to continue collaborations with both The Met and @nailedbytav, and love that a small bottle can unlock an artistic world to share with others.” The J. Handiwork with Expand your business offerings & discover how to extend artistry from fingertips to hands with advice from henna artists CALLIE ILEY REPORTS

What is henna?

Henna is a plant-based dye that stains the skin and is used to create temporary body art. After henna stains reach their peak colour, they gradually wear through exfoliation, and typically last for up to three weeks. The practice is over 5,000 years old, with origins in the Middle East, India, Africa and Egypt, where henna grew naturally. Traditionally seen as a sign of luck, as well as beauty, henna is used at weddings and on religious holidays, but its decadence has seen its popularity grow in a number of cultures. The name ‘henna’ is used in other dyes for the skin and hair, such as black henna and neutral henna, neither of which are derivatives from the henna plant. While traditional styles are ever-apparent, henna has adapted and changed to suit the modern consumer. Traditional henna that stains the skin for weeks at a time is available, alongside henna that lasts for only 24 hours. It can also be purchased in a range of colours, to allow for further creative freedom when it comes to achieving desired looks.

Making fingertips look beautiful is a huge part of a nail tech’s job, so offering a service that extends this beauty up to the hands is a great add-on to consider. The wear time (up to three weeks) of traditional henna coincides with the typical wear time of nail enhancements, so the two services can work hand in hand. Here, two henna artists share their henna journeys and reveal what the artform means to them…

Pavandeep Ahluwalia Dhanjal BEM of Pavan Beauty, London Pavandeep Ahluwalia Dhanjal, beauty entrepreneur & CEO of Pavan Henna Bar, started experimenting with henna at 15 years old, when she picked up a cone at a henna party and created a design. Her family loved the result, so she began painting designs for them, sparking her passion further. “I took a course and knew from then that I wanted to be the best at the skill, so I pursued a career in henna,” she reveals. Pavan offers henna services from Pavan Henna Bar, London, offering traditional brown henna, coloured henna, and an alternative to black henna; jagua henna, which is Pavan Henna Bar’s most soughtafter service. “I started my Henna Bar to make henna services accessible to all. I was frequently asked by people where they could get henna, and it appeared that it was only if you were invited to an Indian function, or had a relative that knew how to do it. I wanted to offer a professional service that everyone could enjoy.”

After the success of the Henna Bar, Pavan launched her retail line, available via department store, Selfridges. “I wanted to offer my own henna products that are safe, reliable and for everyone. Henna is so beautiful, and I would like to share it with the world. “Henna represents prosperity, happiness, good fortune, love, new beginnings and luck. This has been instilled in me from a young age, and I feel as if wearing henna gives me superpowers! It’s like my good luck charm,” Pavan smiles. “I love its diversity – anyone and everyone can wear it, and it looks good on every person. Henna is so creative, eyecatching and like a lipstick or nail design, it can change the entire look of an outfit. “It is also an easy to sell, add-on service, which complements nail treatments so well and looks like jewellery painted on the skin. Henna cones are easy to use and store, and I recommend charging £25 for a design that takes around 25 minutes. “Like nail art, there are so many styles you can achieve using a henna cone,” she notes. “You can create shading, thick and bold lines, or thin and intricate designs. They’re each created by the amount of pressure you apply to the henna cone.”

Training tips Pavan offers a one-day course in henna application, which includes a discount on products and a guarantee that participants will be able to use a henna cone within the first hour of the session. “It’s important to know the background of henna, the materials used, and how it is made, so that you can give clients an insight into the beauty of the regime that is centuries old.” For more information about products and training, visit www.pavanonline.com /pavanbeautyhenna @pavanbeauty

Karuna Bilimoria Halai of Karuna Bilimoria Henna & Nails, North West London London-based nail tech & henna artist, Karuna Bilimoria Halai, first experimented with henna in 2000. “My grandmother loved henna. One year, my grandparents visited from India, and she asked me to apply henna for her. I hated the look and smell of it, so I refused. She persuaded me otherwise and showed me how to paint a paisley pattern,” Karuna explains. “I loved it and have been working with henna ever since. I enjoy the challenge of applying the paste carefully and neatly. “Every time I apply henna, I think of my grandmother, even now she has passed. It helps me to feel close to her and I imagine her watching me and saying, ‘I’m next’, with her hands extended out to me.” Karuna trained in nails with OPI in 2009. “I was fascinated with nails from a young age. I used to stop and peer into nail salons because I wanted to watch the nail techs work all day! I love how enhancements can transform and extend the nail.” Karuna tends to provide henna and nail services within the Asian wedding industry. “Being able to do both nails and henna for a bride means they can save time looking for two 84 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

separate artists, and don’t have to book two separate appointments. I honestly can’t think of any drawback, apart from the long hours. During wedding season, it can affect the time I spend with my family, so I always try to create a balance and ensure I don’t book too many appointments. “For me, henna helps me to express my creativity. Art is subjective, and with henna, you can create whatever you like. Whether thin, thick, curly or straight lines, there are no rules surrounding how to express your creativity with the artform. You can also use henna patterns for other projects, for example I create henna-inspired candle holders and decorations, and most of my nail art is henna-inspired, too!”

Key skills

“For both henna application and nail design, you need to have a steady hand and be precise. You must ensure that the canvas is clean and prepared properly,” Karuna acknowledges. “Henna can be less forgiving, as if you make a mistake, you can wipe it off, however it will still stain the skin. “My advice to techs considering offering henna alongside nail services would be to ensure that you use 100% natural henna. I supply natural henna to those who don’t wish to mix their own. Secondly, invest in your craft, be it through time to practice or financially, by enrolling on a training course. Avoid offering the service solely for the money. Although it can be economically rewarding, if you don’t have a passion for the craft then it will show in your work and to your clients.”

Managing Employee Bereavement

Employment law specialist, TINA CHANDER, shares obligations & points to consider if an employee loses a loved one…

ABOUT TINA CHANDER

A

Tina Chander is head of employment law at Midlands law firm, Wright Hassall, and deals with contentious and non-contentious employment law issues. She acts on behalf of a variety of businesses, from small setups to large national and international corporates. Tina advises on a variety of employment law matters, including all aspects of employment tribunal proceedings and appeals.

s an employer, you may have to navigate a situation where a member of your team loses a loved one. Finding the ideal balance between safeguarding a worker’s mental health and maintaining business operations can be difficult at times like these. But what obligations under the law do employers have in such circumstances?

Bereavement law Matters surrounding bereavement or compassionate leave are not specifically defined within UK employment law (outside of statutory parental bereavement leave). However, in order to manage emergencies involving ‘dependents’, such as a spouse, civil partner, child, parent, or anyone else who depends on their physical care, employees do have the right to take ‘a reasonable period of time’ off work, according to the Employment Rights Act 1996. The term ‘reasonable’ is not defined by law unless it is included in a contract of employment or separate policy, yet it is typically thought to be between two and five days. However, each situation should be examined individually, taking into account the nature of the employee’s relationship to the deceased, as well as the circumstances surrounding their death. Employees wanting time off above what is agreed should request it as soon as is practicable. Often, extended bereavement leave will be unpaid and permitted at the employer’s discretion. Nevertheless, employers should be mindful of their legal responsibility to protect an employee’s wellbeing under The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999. This means not pushing the return to work where mental health is a factor. However, if a prolonged absence is due to depression or anxiety resulting from the bereavement, a fit note should be provided, as the employee could be entitled to sickness pay. Employers are responsible for preventing unfair treatment of workers on bereavement leave. The bereaved must be afforded the same opportunities for advancement or training, and they cannot be let go for being physically absent. An employee may have a case for a tribunal claim if they feel they were marginalised as a result of their absence. Religious beliefs and customs must also be accommodated when contemplating leave length. For example, under the Equality Act 2010, refusing an employee sufficient time to perform religious mourning rituals could be considered indirect discrimination. 86 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Parental bereavement Parents or primary caregivers who have lost a child under the age of 18 are handled differently under UK law. According to the Parental Bereavement (Leave & Pay) Act, those affected are entitled to two weeks of parental bereavement leave and/or statutory parental bereavement pay. Employees who have worked for at least 26 weeks prior to their bereavement are eligible for statutory bereavement pay, which is equal to £156.66 a week or 90% of their average weekly earnings (whichever is lowest). Two weeks of unpaid parental bereavement leave are available to those who have not met this service requirement. The law also safeguards the rights of employees who suffer a stillbirth after 24 weeks of pregnancy, by granting them 52 weeks of maternity leave and pay. All the employee’s standard employment rights are protected throughout this time, including their rights to pay rises and to accrue annual leave.

Bereavement policies Some businesses will have a special bereavement policy, since it can eliminate the need for wrangling during a difficult time. Such policies should make clear: • How the time off will be handled. • How much time off is reasonable to expect. • What will be paid to the employee during bereavement leave. • Procedures for reporting a bereavement. • The employer’s position if the deceased is not considered a ‘dependant’ under the Employment Act. • How the return to work will be handled.

Return to work Be aware that a loss may result in significant changes to someone’s personal situation, such as a shift in childcare requirements or increased financial hardship. In order to manage their new circumstances, employees might need to change their workload or duties. The ideal way to manage this is always to remain agile. This can entail recommending part-time hours, flexible or hybrid working arrangements, or a gradual return to tasks. After returning to work, schedule regular one-to-one meetings to track progress. This will guarantee that any concerns are brought to light as they arise. In order to avoid unfairly affecting a person’s career history, bereavement should also be taken into account while conducting performance appraisals. Empathy is essential for handling a worker’s mourning period. The most practical method to demonstrate your support is to treat others as you would like to be treated if the tables were turned. The creation of a secure and supportive workplace for the bereaved will assist to ensure their continued involvement, loyalty and integration into the team. www.wrighthassall.co.uk

REBECCA HITCHON gets the scoop on high-tech launches, decodes hot topics & sources tech-savvy tips for your business

Handy tools to help grow your business What are your business ambitions for the new year? I can imagine that growing your brand is one, so you can watch it flourish and become a force to be reckoned with. But how can you make 2023 the year it happens? Here are two exciting digital tools that could help…

Kaikura Running a successful business is about more than technical skills: it involves personal development and a positive mindset. This helps you to be the best version of yourself, so your business can function at its best, too, and this is where Kaikura can support. The app has been specifically created for hair and beauty professionals; from apprentices to salon owners, to help you identify and achieve personal goals on a short and long-term basis. The brainchild of Steph Stevenson, former National Hair & Beauty Federation board member & owner of the award-winning HNB Salon & Spa in Poole, Kaikura is designed to be a ‘mentor Steph Stevenson in your pocket’. Inspired by a conversation she had with members of her local council, who highlighted the high number of salons making incomplete claims for the Additional Restrictions Grant during lockdown, Steph was awarded funding through Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council to create a personal and business growth industry programme. Due to this, pros in these locations can receive Kaikura for free for one year.

“Most hair and beauty professionals are constantly updating their technical skills, and while they also want to improve their business knowledge, coaching or mentoring courses can be expensive and require significant time commitments. This makes them accessible to about 5% of the industry,” explains Steph. “Kaikura is designed for everybody, filling a huge gap in the sector and supporting improved employability.” The app provides tasks to boost your business skills and confidence, with animation technology allowing for new tasks and topics, such as relevant industry issues, to regularly be added, ensuring continual development. Subscribers can also access a mentor for bespoke guidance, as well as breakout rooms for discussions with other professionals. Download Kaikura on the App Store or Google Play, or access it on the web via www.kaikura.io. The tool is free for three days, before costing £9.99 per month. Pros in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole areas will see their fee set to £0 when signing up on the website. /kaikuraofficial @kaikuraofficial

NEWS BYTE Instagram has introduced an in-app scheduling tool, allowing users to schedule content, including carousel posts and reels, up to 75 days in advance. The platform previously required external software to complete such functions. The feature is available under ‘Advanced settings’ when preparing to share a grid post, and scheduled posts can be edited via the menu at the top right of the profile page. Currently, the tool does not allow for product tagging, collaborative or sponsored posts, fundraisers or cross-posting to Facebook . 88 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

As a small business, you may be envious of the budget, time and tools that larger companies have to support business success. You might feel that you are already juggling enough responsibilities to consider how to grow your brand. Welcome Balloonary, a tool for small business owners, solopreneurs and side hustlers that harnesses the methods used by big companies to create, launch and manage impactful digital ads. “There’s a common misconception that digital advertising is only for the big players, but even the smallest business can benefit from getting noticed by the right audience online,” reveals Brice Dondelinger, co-founder of Balloonary. “We’ve made it our mission to empower founders and make digital advertising accessible for everyone, by building a fast and simple tool for creating and launching online ads, with zero marketing experience required.”

TECH TALKING POINT: Whaling

Three steps are required to get started: 1. Generate Balloonary’s AI technology scans your website, learns about your company and creates ready-to-launch custom ads using your brand colours, imagery from your site and across the web, plus a range of advert text written for you to choose from. 2. Adjust Customise the ad to your exact preference using the tool’s drag and drop interface, and tweak text and imagery until your ad is exactly as you wish.

Ads can be run on Facebook, Instagram and Google but managed via one platform, allowing you to easily track, analyse and compare digital advertising campaigns, with support from the Balloonary team should you need it.

@balloonarycom

As the name suggests, ‘whaling’ targets much higherprofile figures than a phishing attack, to access sensitive, often financial, information. Cyber criminals will carry out thorough research into a company, its employees and their communication styles so that they can authentically pose as senior figures, deceiving others in the organisation.

NEWS BYTE Facebook.com/balloonary

/balloonary

In my November column, I discussed how to protect your business from cyber attacks. Phishing is one form of cyber crime I mentioned: fake emails or texts that attempt to gain private data. However, there’s a sophisticated, more believable form of phishing that is increasingly affecting businesses.

If you’re unsure about communication from a member of staff, directly talk to the person who it claims to be from. Cyber criminals will often use minor differences in email names, such as missing or added full stops, as well as claims of urgency and excuses not to speak over the phone.

3. Launch Precisely target clients for maximum success, receive a forecast from Balloonary which shows the results you can expect, and make your ad live to drive sales and boost traffic to your website.

Visit www.balloonary.com to get started from £8 per month. Plus (£25 per month) and Premium (£49 per month) subscriptions are also available, allowing for additional active adverts and more flexibility in how they are run.

How to support clients & employees Explore how to accommodate the needs of those impacted by the menopause on both sides of the nail desk

It’s a stage that will impact most women during their lifetime, yet the menopause is still a largely taboo subject. With little research and dialogue surrounding menopause, it can be challenging to support the needs of those experiencing its effects. However, things are slowly changing, so we’ve highlighted brands making the discourse around menopause more open and optimistic, in the nail space and beyond.

REBECCA HITCHON REPORTS

s

Employees Menopausal women might be the fastest growing demographic in the workforce, according to a study published in journal, BMC Women’s Health. However, 90% of female employees say their workplace offers no support to those suffering. “The first steps towards changing this are understanding your rights in the workplace, then having courage to talk about the menopause,” explains skincare & wellbeing specialist, Jennifer Young, who founded The Menopause Plus platform (TheMenopausePlus.com) to support understanding of the menopause. “If somebody is struggling at work because of Jennifer Young its effects, they need to disclose this in order to receive help. Once armed with this knowledge, employers have a duty to support, for example by appointing menopause ambassadors and providing them with training.” The same applies for self-employed techs; you have a duty of care to yourself, so your health should always come first.

Tech talk

Emma Brock, OPI Nail Boss, shares her story of experiencing the menopause at the age of 25, and how she has coped in the workplace...

“I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) at 25. The worst symptom for me over the years has been brain fog, as I’ve felt stupid when forgetting what a client has said and having to ask the same question repeatedly,” Emma tells Scratch. “If you have an employee who is suffering or if it is you who is suffering, remember that while it is challenging, you can find methods that will support your needs.” Examples of this include making sure that layers can be worn as uniform, ready to remove during hot flushes. Emma also recommends providing equipment to jot down notes, so things that are easily forgotten can be remembered. “I’ve found that if you are open about your situation, clients are understanding, and many appreciate what you’re going through. They often share their own experiences, which turns the appointment into a great therapy session. Similarly, if an employee is struggling, it’s key to be understanding. Remember, everyone goes through the menopause differently and has different needs.” @emmab_opinailboss If early menopause has affected you, an employee or client, Emma recommends visiting www.daisynetwork.org

Did you know? In November 2022, the University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust launched a menopause passport for employees – the first launch of its kind in the NHS. The pass, which was founded by UHB nurse, Wendy Madden, can be used to fast-track help and request adjustments to the workplace environment, such as a lighter uniform or change to working patterns. “I wanted to use my experience of the menopause to ensure that women can talk openly and get the support they need,” comments Wendy. “I was 45 when my symptoms started; at first mood swings and irregular periods, but they soon progressed to anxiety, brain fog and forgetfulness, and some days I struggled to string a sentence together. Coming to work was a real struggle and when I got home, I was so tired I would go straight to bed. “I thought all women went through the same thing, so didn’t tell anybody. It wasn’t until my symptoms were so bad that I felt I had no quality of life, that I got help from my doctor. But I was still missing someone to talk to. Not long afterwards, I became chair of the trust’s Women’s Staff Network and began work on the passport.” Through the network, Wendy has helped to establish staff Q&A sessions with a menopause expert, a support group and a community of menopause champions. 90 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Clients Jennifer Young’s The Menopause Plus platform is packed with information to support understanding of the menopause and how to deal with its physical and emotional effects. Her experience working with women going through the menopause, naturally and because of cancer treatment, inspired her to not only create the platform, but also a series of hormonal balancing treatments and skincare products. “Jennifer Young Training offers accredited qualifications for facial and body treatments, which use acupressure to harness the power of acupuncture – a practice that has been proven to help relieve the impact of menopause,” reveals Jennifer. “Through research, we identified 11 symptom groups, such as sleep disturbance, low mood and libido issues, and linked these to specific acupressure points. The 11 points are covered throughout treatments, then at the end, we apply an acupressure plaster onto the point that links to the client’s greatest concern, to keep pressure up. “Clients learn where this point is and receive a lifestyle card for this symptom. This includes a QR code to a page on our website, which shows where the point is so that they can manually stimulate it or put a plaster on it at home.” Jennifer Young Training also offers menopause coaching and mentoring qualifications, designed to help you guide clients through this change with effective and personalised strategies. Specially formulated for women experiencing the menopause, The Menopause Plus skincare range from Jennifer Young utilises plant-based phytoestrogen. This acts like oestrogen, replacing its declining levels experienced during the menopause with another natural substance.

As well as being used in the treatments created by Jennifer for menopausal clients, these products are ideal items to retail or gift to yourself and employees.

Salon spotlight Fran Bholah, owner of The Nail Room in Southampton, tells Scratch how she uses her own experience to accommodate the needs of menopausal clients... “From chatting to perimenopausal and menopausal clients throughout their appointments, it has become clear to me how symptoms like hot flushes are very uncomfortable to experience in some salon spaces,” says Fran. “Catering to their needs is personally important to me, as I understand their feelings from my own experience of the perimenopause. Therefore, I always strive to provide a comfortable space, where clients know there will be no judgement should they feel the need to cool off or remove a jumper – I even provide them with a fan if they need it!” Fran sees appointments as an opportunity to share experiences. “I believe that offering a space in which clients feel they can openly express their feelings, as well as taking time to understand menopausal issues that they face, can dramatically improve the quality of care. Honesty and gentle humour can help to start these conversations.” Her top tip for adapting nail treatments to menopausal clients is to prioritise hydration. “The nails of these women can often become dry, so using creams or oils during treatments is necessary. Also important is avoiding too many drying chemicals, such as acetone, and giving homecare advice to keep nails and skin in good condition,” she shares. /franyournailsonly

Students included Scratch Star winner, Kayley Cairns, INK London educator, Agnes Dullo, and winner of Next Top Nail Artist 2022, Nicola Sawyer, who were eager to develop their skills and explore new techniques revealed by the the talented duo.

About Barbara & Krisztina Újvári Hungarian twins, Barbara and Krisztina, are respected and renowned international nail artists and educators. They offer online and in-person workshops all over the world, specialising in artistic styles. Creativity has always flowed through their veins, and a love for painting led them to discover nail art and choose nails as a career. Barbara began her nail journey in 2004 and enjoys trying out new skills and techniques, as well as expanding her knowledge. Her education career began with Crystal Nails in Hungary. Krisztina graduated from university as a horticulturist, but journeyed into the nail industry, and believes that nail styling is the perfect outlet for her creativity.

“We love London and have many students and followers from the UK, so it was a long-time dream to come and teach in the city,” reveals Barbara. When explaining the structure of the four-day bootcamp, Krisztina revealed that she spent two days teaching techniques, while Barbara focused on nail art. “I started with ’Winter Landscape’, one of my favourite techniques for this season,” comments Barbara. “The second day

was tough, as we practiced realistic face painting. I was very excited as I usually teach it on a private level, but the group session went very well.” “My first course day covered combined salon techniques, which included the no file technique with polyacryl and gel, as well as creating a baby boomer and a French on practical salon shapes,” adds Krisztina. “The second day explored extreme shapes with effects and how to create a double smile line on Russian Almond and Marilyn shapes.” The atmosphere in the training room was very friendly, with pros willing each other on and eager to make the most of the opportunity to learn from industry experts. “We really enjoyed meeting our students. We were already familiar with some via online courses, but it was great to finally meet them in person. It was also very fulfilling to see the delegates grow professionally over the four days,” says Krisztina. “We got very positive feedback from our students and this makes us so happy. We really hope they will be able to profit from the skills they have acquired,” adds Barbara. The pair plan to visit London in May 2023 with their colleague, Anita Podoba, for a three-day course. /UBNSnails @ujvaribarbara & @ujvari_krisztina

Here are some of the nail looks created by the students over the four-day bootcamp…

“I’ve followed the work of Barbara and Krisztina for a number of years, and because they are not from the UK, I had planned to do some online training with them. In July, I saw the advert for their four-day bootcamp in London, so seized the opportunity to train with them in person. “I largely use L&P acrylic so the bootcamp afforded me time to build my skills with the gel system. I learned how to work with different types of gel, and was refreshed on form fitting for different nail shapes and how to create them. I’ve always found the names of different shapes confusing, so the exploration of shapes was a great lesson. I also learned some techniques to make my art painting cleaner and smoother on a tiny canvas.

Agnes Dullo

“Barbara and Krisztina are great educators. They are very thorough and check in regularly to correct anything that isn’t quite right. Their style is a great balance of giving credit where it is due and describing which areas need improvement. “The bootcamp allowed me to spend time with different faces from the industry and learn new things. It offered a change from everyday salon work, and spending time on advanced techniques was really satisfying.”

DOLPHIN SKIN IS IN!

According to market research company, The NPD Group, sales of prestige beauty products associated with the TikTok trend ‘dolphin skin’ reported doubledigit growth from January to the end of October 2022, compared to the same period in 2021. The ‘dolphin skin’ concept refers to skin with a smooth, radiant and luminous complexion. The #dolphinskin hashtag has been viewed over 2.8 million times on the platform.

According to Instagram’s 2023 Trend Report , Gen-Z consumers are likely to use make-up to express their personality moving forward, rather than to augment a feeling of beauty. In addition, two out of three Gen-Z shoppers plan to buy skincare or beauty products that protect against extreme weather and sun. Rising air pollution and a focus on UV rays is reportedly leading to an increasing number of searches for climate-proof products.
