UK BUSINESSES TO RECEIVE SUPPORT WITH ENERGY BILLS The UK government has announced the ‘Energy Bills Discount Scheme’ for UK businesses, charities and the public sector, ahead of the current scheme ending in March. From 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024, all eligible premises-based hair and beauty businesses that are currently paying more than £107 per MWh for gas and £302 per MWh for electricity, will see a discount of up to £6.97/MWh automatically applied to their gas bill and a discount of up to £19.61/MWh applied to their electricity bill. Customers do not need to apply for the discount. As with the current scheme, suppliers will automatically apply reductions to the bills of all eligible non-domestic customers. “There can be no debate that Victoria Brownlie businesses within the beauty industry are having a really difficult time at the moment with the price of energy, products, rents and supply chain costs increasing significantly in 2022,” comments Victoria Brownlie, chief policy officer at the British Beauty Council. “While we are grateful to receive some level of continued support post-March, it is disappointing that the government has not gone further at such a delicate time for our hair and beauty salons and retail businesses. We are continuing to push for discounts, grants and incentives across other areas of business. These include green grants and funding to implement energy efficiency measures, to help rebuild and futureproof the industry.” Richard Lambert, NHBF chief executive, adds: “Many will see the discount swallowed up in the first month or two of the energy price increases they are already facing. Our sector is locked in a fight for survival Richard Lambert through the cost of doing business crisis and with 20% of businesses saying that they are likely to downsize or close over the next few months, further support will be needed to ensure that this sector can continue to make its significant contribution to vibrant high streets and community wellbeing.” For more information, visit www.gov.uk

Nail NATION GLITTERBELS PARTNERS WITH IRISH DISTRIBUTOR, CREATIVE ACADEMY Staffordshire-based nail brand, Glitterbels, has appointed Dublin-based company, Creative Academy, to exclusively distribute the brand in Ireland. Glitterbels’ range of coloured and glitter acrylic powders, Hema Free Gel Polish, Brush-on Builder Gel, loose glitter and essential tools join the portfolio of professional nail brands that Creative Academy distributes. The company also offers a range of education options. “Glitterbels is so excited to be partnering with Creative Academy,” comments Elliott Maginnis, co-founder & owner of Glitterbels. “This opens up big opportunities for the brand and Irish customer base alike. “We feel confident that this will be a huge success and have exciting plans for the future with our new distributor. We cannot wait to pave the way forward with them by our side.” Karen O’Neill, director of Creative Academy, adds: “As a multi award-winning nail distribution and training company with over 25 years’ experience, we felt there was a gap in the Irish market for a contemporary, imaginative and vibrant nail range, which also has a pocket-friendly price point. “Nail clients are excited to be back in salons after the pandemic, and are definitely looking for something a bit ‘extra’. We’re delighted to have found that to offer our customers.” www.glitterbels.com / www.creativeacademy.ie

Beauty salons grow in number across UK high streets According to BBC’s data team, the number of beauty salons and tattoo parlours has grown on UK high streets, while the number of banks and department stores has fallen. A tool on BBC’s website allows users to check how their local high streets and shopping areas have changed since the beginning of the pandemic. London showed a 6.5% increase in beauty services, with Great Britain showing a 5.9% increase overall from 2020 to 2022. “There is definitely growth in certain sectors within the industry but that is not to say all are managing to recover post-Covid,” says Millie Kendall, CEO of the British Beauty Council. “Hair and beauty services have always had a strong position on our high streets, and individuals use personal care products daily; from toothpaste and deodorant to shampoo and lip balm. “Hairdressing has been in decline for some years now, as the sector is hit by tax burdens, huge energy bills, a changing model for staff and a recruitment crisis. This is resulting in a number of business closures. “The businesses that are doing well are often in the beauty, nail and barber sectors. Retail is finding it hard to recover and is having to shift nimbly to online commerce.” www.bbc.co.uk / www.britishbeautycouncil.com

Discover how DENITSA NEDELCHEVA’S career has blossomed & the concept behind the striking photo that features on this month’s front cover

M

ulti award-winning nail pro and judge, Denitsa Nedelcheva, was inspired by the beauty of her home country, Bulgaria, when conceptualising this month’s cover image. “Bulgaria is known for roses and rose oil, so I wanted to pay homage to this and show my love for my country through my work.” Denitsa was the make-up artist, nail stylist and model for the photo shoot, which took place in summer 2022. She chose clothing and accessories inspired by Bulgarian folklore and opted for shades of red and white to create a contrasting and impactful look. Denitsa’s creative talents first came to light in the industry in 2014, following completion of a higher education course in International Relations. She determined that her passion lay elsewhere and wanted to embark on a career in which she could use her imagination and express herself through art. Her first training course was with master nail stylist, Lara Morrano, and the talented pro has since gone on to educate and excel in international competitions, as both a judge and competitor. “I currently work from a base in Finland, conducting daily online trainings and consultations to help with preparation for participating in competitions. I use my experience to motivate the participants as their mentor, helping them to develop

and enjoy success. My goals are to continue organising international championships and to create my own range of nail products.” When asked about the nails featured in her rose-themed cover shoot, Denitsa revealed that they took a number of days to complete. She used gel to sculpt the extreme nail length, followed by airbrushing techniques to add colour, plasticine modelling gel to craft the roses, and gel for the rose hedge. “I really like the shape, decoration and length of the nails,” she smiles. “I felt a huge sense of satisfaction and elation when the nails were complete. The nails were created on tips and adhered onto my natural nails on the day of the photo shoot.” The nail stylist reveals that it was challenging to find a pose to showcase all nails effectively, in order for the full concept to be visible. “I think that the finished photos show what I love most – beauty, creativity and extreme nail forms,” she reveals. “I’m so happy that I found a way to express myself; through the creation of nail posters. The finished image perfectly expresses my original idea. “I’m extremely happy and proud that my work was chosen to be on the cover of the world’s largest magazine for the nail industry.”

Dame Vivienne Westwood 8 April 1941 – 29 December 2022

She was the pioneer of British punk fashion; famed for her statement-making collections, activism & eye for the unusual. Here, Scratch honours the iconic designer’s visions & showcases nail styles that rocked the runway for her brand

Credited for projecting modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream, Westwood’s provocative, printed slogans and thought-provoking images adorned her first range of t-shirts; a trend that continued throughout her collections. She paid tribute to history through her creations, adding a modern Vivienne-style twist, and looked to the future with a focus on climate change; using recycled products in her more recent collections to highlight a need for action.

With Tinie Tempah, London Men’s Fashion Week, AW17/18

Her designs represented a statement of her own values, and the three-time British Fashion Designer of the Year was honoured with a damehood in 2006. Her eccentricity extended to jewellery and accessories, and she collaborated largely with CND™ and Marian Newman to create looks that extended her values to fingertips.

“Dame Vivienne Westwood, the mother of punk and iconoclast who pushed the boundaries of fashion, activism and pop culture, carved her own path and never saw gender barriers. Vivienne Westwood was fascinated by cool, expressive nails – seeing them as tiny canvases designed to make a statement. She was the coolest and most timeless icon in fashion. I am so blessed to have known her and worked with her with CND™ backstage in Paris. Thank you to Marian Newman and her team for many years of working the Vivienne Westwood shows for CND™ in London and Paris. RIP amazing, rebellious icon!”

“RIP Dame Viv. It was an honour to have known you, to have worked on your shows for 12 years, and to have heard your passionate opinions on climate change and the global economy. An era has ended with the death of a legend.”

“It was a huge honour to work backstage on so many Vivienne Westwood fashion shows in London and Paris with Marian Newman. They were fabulously bonkers! Boundaries were pushed and creativity was allowed to run riot. The nail looks were always unique and had a Vivienne-style twist. Looks often went beyond just nails, with decoration on the fingers and hands, and there was always a story behind the person wearing them. “One particular nail creation that stands out for me is the finger puppets created for the AW17/18 presentation at London Men’s Fashion Week. I had been to the test with Marian the day before the show. Marian suggested we make puppets to match a particular fabric, so I raided my childrens’ arts and crafts drawer and created puppets by cutting the fingertips off vinyl gloves. The results captured a lot of attention and Vivienne stopped backstage to say how fabulous they were. She was a true icon; passionate about political causes, which was often reflected in what we created. I will very much miss the times that we shared with her.” Jennie Nippard, educator & session nail stylist

Cosmetic THE

Climate The Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association (CTPA) explores safety questions surrounding cosmetics & busts common myths BY CAROLINE RAINSFORD

Head of scientific & environmental services at The CTPA

REVEALED: THE MOST SEARCHED-FOR COSMETICS SAFETY QUESTIONS

I

n a previous article, I delved into the science behind nail polish ingredients with a lessthan-glossy reputation. There can be many reasons why cosmetic ingredients develop bad press. For example, it could be down to scientific study results that are taken out of context, the effects that a chemical can have when used in a different way, or even historical product performance problems associated with that substance.

Once opened, cosmetic products become exposed to dirt and microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts and moulds) that are found in the air, on our fingers and on brushes. Once they get into the product, these microorganisms can live and grow.

If a product has a limited shelf life (less than 30 months, or two and a half years), it is required to be labelled with a ‘best before’ date. You are unlikely to see a ‘best before’ date because It’s not just ingredients in nail products most products are formulated to that suffer from an image problem. ensure they have a long shelf life. Typing ‘Do cosmetics…’ into a search Therefore, you are more likely to see a ‘period engine reveals some popular fears about our after opening’ (PAO) symbol on the label. This everyday essentials by predicting what is likely to DID YOU KNOW? recommends the length of time a product be searched. DID YOU KNOW?

Saying that a cosmetic ‘contains known cancer-causing chemicals’ is like saying that chocolate contains a known cancer-causing chemical (furfural), or human breath contains formaldehyde. Just because a chemical might contribute to tumour formation in very high doses or when it is eaten, it does not mean it will have the same effect in small doses or applied to the nails or hair, for example. A safety assessment must ensure that the way it is used in cosmetics is safe. Do cosmetics cause cancer? I doubt you will be surprised that the answer to this question is ‘no.’ As cosmetic products are used in our daily routines, it is extremely important that great care is taken to ensure that their effects are purely positive, and that no harm is caused. Before a cosmetic product is allowed to be sold, an experienced and qualified safety assessor must review the product and its ingredients to check how it has been manufactured, who is likely to use it, how they’ll use it and how often. One part of this indepth process is carefully assessing the scientific information on carcinogenicity (cancer-causing potential) and making sure there is no chance that any of the ingredients can cause cancer when used in the cosmetic product. Sometimes, people ask whether the fact that cosmetic products are repeatedly used for many years will increase their risk of cancer. This is taken into account by the Lifetime Cancer Risk (LCR) calculation, which is part of the cosmetic ingredient safety assessment, and is used to ensure that we will not be more likely to develop cancer as a result of using a product.

Are cosmetic ingredients dangerous? Just as cosmetic ingredients don’t cause cancer, they are also not dangerous, because along with investigating cancer-causing potential, the safety assessment must look at a variety of other potentially harmful effects to ensure these won’t happen either. For example, that the products and its ingredients are safe for the skin, the eyes, the lungs (if it is breathed in), safe when exposed to UV light from the sun, are unlikely to cause allergy, and more.

Are cosmetics tested on animals? If cosmetics and their ingredients are safe, how is this proven without animal testing? Animal testing of cosmetic products and ingredients has been banned in the UK and Europe for many years. The animal testing ban means that all UK cosmetic and personal

care products are cruelty-free, regardless of whether the company informs you of this as part of its marketing. Far from conducting animal testing, the cosmetics industry supports the animal testing ban, and the UK and EU industry has invested over €70 million over the past 25 years in developing alternative methods, meaning that we are a global leader in the science of alternative safety testing. As well as working on the science behind the methods, the cosmetics industry places a priority on sharing these new approaches with other global regions, governments and industries to promote their use and acceptance, because this will reduce and ultimately help to end animal testing worldwide.

What about other parts of the world?

Although not all regions of the world have an animal testing ban in their cosmetics law, it does not necessarily mean that animal testing is taking place. The cosmetics industry and government partners are working closely with colleagues in different parts of the world to demonstrate methods of confirming product and ingredient safety without animal testing. In China, which is the only region with a mandatory animal testing requirement, there are now exemptions from this testing for most cosmetics, which is a very positive step.

“Cosmetic companies put their ingredients and products through years of development and assess them for safety before they are allowed anywhere near our shelves and bodies.” Which cosmetics don’t contain…? The real question here is: why do some products claim to be free from certain ingredients? Sometimes, ‘free from’ claims can be useful; for example, ‘free from alcohol’ on a mouthwash that will be used by children, or ‘free from animal-derived ingredients’ in a vegan product. However, there are also many examples of ‘free from’ claims that are unhelpful, and lead us to unnecessarily worry about the safety of certain ingredients. Under the cosmetics law, companies should not make claims that unfairly malign safe ingredients, and at CTPA we provide guidance and training to help companies understand when these types of claims are appropriate and when they are not.

Parabens A good example of an unhelpful ‘free from’ claim is parabens. Parabens are a family of chemicals, some of which are used as cosmetic preservatives. Preservatives protect against the growth of mould, bacteria and other nasties that can make products go off. The parabens story began in 2004 when a small scientific study was published, alleging a link between parabens and breast cancer. However, the study was soon discredited by other scientists; for example, the study reported finding parabens in samples of human breast tumour tissues, but it also found quantities of parabens in control samples that did not contain any tissue at all. It was an extremely small study of 20 breast tumour cases and did not include any normal tissue for comparison. Although parabens have been safely used as preservatives in cosmetics and food for over 50 years, the negative media attention as a result of the study damaged their reputation. To further prove that the parabens used in cosmetics are safe, they have all undergone assessment and are approved as safe by independent scientists. It’s fair to say that they are one of the most studied groups of cosmetic ingredients.

Cosmetics and their ingredients are safe! Cosmetic companies put their ingredients and products through years of development and assess them for safety before they are allowed anywhere near our shelves and bodies. Not only do companies do this because safety is their highest priority, but also because the UK has strict laws dedicated to cosmetics. The CTPA website and www.thefactsabout.co.uk provide more information on these topics. www.ctpa.org.uk

Barbie

Step 1 Paint Glitterbels Hema Free Gel Polish in Almond Crunch over the entire nail and cure, followed by a coat of Unbelievabel Gel in Feeling Natural. Once cured, buff to mattify the finish and use a pencil to sketch Barbie’s portrait.

3

Step 2 Paint the eye using Hema Free Gel Polish in White and Unbelievabel Gels in Blue Avenue and Blow Out, ensuring that you flash cure in between each colour application for 10 seconds. Use Unbelievabel Gel in The Coolest to paint a light ring around the eye. Outline its shape using Unbelievabel Gel shades, Black and Bold Babe.

4

Next, outline the nose and lines of the face using Unbelievabel Gel in Spicy, and the lips and teeth with Hema Free Gel Polish in White and Unbelievabel Gel in Unmissable. Paint Barbie’s hair using Unbelievabel Gel in Cream Cake and cure.

5

Step 3 Wipe away the pencil sketch with cleanser or an alcohol wipe. Place two dots of Unbelievabel Gel in Feeling Natural onto a nail palette, mixing one dot with Unbelievabel Gels, Spicy and Sweet Syrup. Mix the other dot with Unbelievabel Gel in Bare All and White Hema Free Gel Polish. Paint the contours of Barbie’s face using the darker mix and its highlights with the other, pulling the pigment into place with a nail art brush. Don’t cure until the blend is smooth.

6

Step 4 Use the blending method to build highlights and shadows on the face, particularly around the nose. Add Bold Babe and Sweet Syrup to the colour mix to darken the shade for the shadows as needed. Use Unbelievabel Gels in Affair, Unmissable and I Love You to add dimension to the lips and Unbelievabel Gel shade, Retro, to create the crease of the eyeshadow. Blend out with Unmissable mixed with No Wipe Top Coat, and use this same method to add colour to the cheeks. Cure. Step 1 Paint two coats of Hema Free Gel Polish in Peaches & Cream over the entire nail, curing between each coat. Apply No Wipe Top Coat, cure, then buff the nail. Draw the sketch of Ken on the nail with a pencil. Step 2 Add colour to the eye using Hema Free Gel Polish in White and Unbelievabel Gels in Black, Hug Me, Vivid Velvet and The Coolest, flash curing between each colour application to prevent bleeding. Use Unbelievabel Gel in Don’t Be Bitter for the lips, and a mix of Black and Sweet Syrup for the eyebrow. Cure and remove the visible areas of the sketch with an alcohol wipe.

Step 3 Create shadows on the face using the same method as in the Barbie design. Mix Unbelievabel Gels in Feeling Natural, Sweet Syrup, Spicy and Sass Pot, and use to paint contours. Cure when complete.

Step 2 Draw the character sketches as accurately as possible, and check that Mickey and Minnie line up when the nails are together.

Step 4 Add highlights by mixing Unbelievabel Gels in Feeling Natural, Zen and Cream Cake to create a yellow undertone, as Ken is more tanned than Barbie. Blend and add shadows where needed, flash curing the details until you are happy with the result.

Step 3 Use Unbelievabel Gel in Black to carefully outline the sketches of Mickey and Minnie, flash curing each line as you paint. Use the shade to fill in any black areas, such as the ears, the heads and Mickey’s chest, and cure. Wipe away the sketches using an alcohol wipe, then paint the characters’ faces with Hema Free Gel Polish in Almond Crunch and cure.

Step 5 Use Unbelievabel Gels in Don’t Be Bitter, Worth The Squeeze, Sweet Syrup and Spicy to paint the lips, flash curing between each shade. Apply the same method to the brow bone and nose, using the shadow and highlight mixes from previously in the step-byGlitterbels Hema step. Cure. Free Gel Polish in White £7.99 inc VAT www.glitterbels.com

Step 6 Add highlights to the eye and mouth using White Hema Free Gel Polish, and add lines of Sass Pot and Black to define Ken’s hair and strong eyebrow. Cure, then apply a coat of No Wipe Top Coat and cure to finish.

Tool talk

“For these designs, I used the Glitterbels Rainbow Fine Detailer Brushes,” shares Emma. “A good set of brushes makes a huge difference to the quality of your work, and I use this three-piece set for all my nail art needs.”

TOP TIP “When painting character portraits on nails, avoid using a black shade to create shadows on skin, as it will look grey when finished,” advises Emma.

Paint Minnie’s bow, dress and Mickey’s shorts with Unbelievabel Gel in Hot Shot and cure. Use Unbelievabel Gel in Sunny Side Up for Mickey’s shoe, and create the dots on Minnie’s bow and Mickey’s shorts and the white of the eyes using Hema Free Gel Polish in White. Cure. Step 4 Paint black dots on the eyes and sharpen any linework, flash curing once you’re satisfied with each detail. Once you are happy with the design, cure and apply No Wipe Top Coat. Cure to finish.

MAKING MOVES WITH

o V o n i M Immerse in competition tips & nail tales from master nail stylist, MINO VO…

The importance of rules & questions

E

very nail competition has its own set of rules, and rules can change from year to year. Ensuring that you read the rules and understand them perfectly is an imperative part of the competing process, whether you are new to competitions or a seasoned pro.

ABOUT MINO VO Mino Vo is ‘The Avant-Garde Nail Artist’, a multi award-winning nail aficionado with over 60 competition titles under his belt. An international educator, he travels the world teaching nail services and extreme shapes, and has developed a variety of nail tools to support his work and that of fellow nail pros. Mino runs a salon and academy in north London.

I created these Russian almond nails last month, as I was keen to work with some bright shades post-winter and change up my styling efforts.

Those who compete without reading the rules often lose points that can be easily kept. Some may also be disqualified. When I competed at Nailympia Canada, I lost five points because I did not have a bin next to my nail desk. I have also seen NailPro competitors submit Disney-themed artwork for the Flat Art category, when the rules clearly state that this is forbidden. As a result, their hard work was never judged and they were immediately disqualified. In additional to the general competition rules, each category will have its own rules and criteria. This is where you can learn the weighting of points and from which areas they can be gained. Rules detail what is expected from a competition. Some categories will have their own theme. For example, the theme for the Invent A Nail Shape category in the second edition of Nailympia Online was ‘colours of a peacock’. This allowed for imagination and creativity, and I created a dragon weapon nail, which I decorated in tones of blue, representing the theme.

50 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Other competitors took the theme literally, creating peacock-shaped nails. It can be easy to miss important information when competing, particularly if you are competing in multiple categories. Take your time when reading the rules and read them several times. During the Nailartfrance competition in Paris, I discovered that my stiletto nails were too long, as the maximum length specified in the rules was 5cm. I was so used to competiing in Nailympia competitions, which have a different length requirement, that I was not accustomed to the length restrictions for Nailartfrance. Score sheets are just as important as competition rules, as they reveal how the points are distributed. Even the most seasoned, successful competitors may not get a perfect score in nail competitions. Knowing how the scores are distributed can help you to decide whether you want to lose a couple of points in one area in order to focus on a different one, in which you can accrue more points. Score sheets help you to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Many new competitors run out of time on the competition floor, and file until the competition ends. Competitors should always allow for time to clean the nails and apply top coat or create a high shine. In my opinion, these tasks are straightforward to complete so you should be able to achieve the maximum points. Skipping these steps could cause a loss of 15-20 points.

Out & about I kicked off 2023 with a private training course with Annie Pham, before travelling to Le Lotus Nail Bar in Maidstone, Kent, to train over 20 team members. It was great to meet so many nail techs eager to grow their skills. The class was hosted by owner, Kim Ng, with Annie Pham, and each member of the team was very eager to learn. My next stop was Leeds, to visit master nail The Le Lotus Nail Bar team educator, Gosha Walczak. Gosha and I have been supporting each other since we first met a few years ago, and the visit allowed us to exchange knowledge and help each other grow.

Mino with Gosha Walczak

I also managed to squeeze in a trip to Berlin to see my mentor, Olena Oezman. I try to train with her at least four times a year and have so much respect for her and her skills. Each visit, we focus on a new area for growth and development, and I always return home with new knowledge and skills.

Team talk East London-based nail pro, Charisse Cassie of ChaRia’s Nails, has attended a number of my classes and has worked so hard to develop her skills. I have always admired her passion and artistic skills, and it is so inspiring to watch her grow. When I decided to create a team to compete in Nailympia London 2022, I invited Charisse to enrol, as I knew she would work hard and take the competition seriously. Entering in Division 2, she scooped a first place medal in the Invent a Nail Shape category, and three second place medals. I am also happy to announce that Charisse is joining my salon team, so that we can work closer together. Charisse Cassie

Nails by Miglena Fung, created in March 2022 on Mino’s three-day Avant-Garde nail course.

Coming up I created these three nails for the Joy Of Nails category, Nailympia Online – second edition, and was awarded first place in Division 3. To add to the excitement, CND™ co-founder, Jan Arnold, who was a category judge, revealed that she loved my work so much that she wanted to arrange a video call with me. It was a highlight of my competing career!

This month, I am teaching my signature three-day Avant-Garde nail course in London. This course aims to give students the knowledge they need to create their own special shapes in their own time. I will also be hosting classes for two very talented educators. The first is Monika Urantowka, a specialist in realism painting whose work hones a clean, smooth finish. Secondly, for my mentor, Olena Oezman, who will be teaching her combined manicure class and how to create a gothic almond with striking designs.

Step 1 Prep the nails and file to the desired shape and length using a 100/180-grit nail file. Remove excess cuticle and buff over the nails with a block file to take away the shine. Step 2 Spray Halo Prep & Scrub onto a lint-free pad and use it to scrub the nails. This will dehydrate the nail plate and remove any debris from the nail. Next, apply Halo Base Coat and cure for 30 seconds. Step 3 Apply a thin layer of Halo EasiBuild in a shade of your choice and cure for 60 seconds. I have chosen Dare2Bare in Peach for this nail style.

Step 4 When cured, apply a ‘slick’ coat of EasiBuild to the nail; a thin layer of gel that acts as a guide for the second coat of EasiBuild. Do not cure. Next, apply a coat of EasiBuild in a thicker layer. Allow the product to fall and gather at the tip then gently work it into the middle of the nail. Cure for 60 seconds. Step 5 Use Halo Prep & Scrub on a lint-free pad to wipe away the inhibition layer. Step 6 File over the nails using a 100/180-grit nail file to achieve a smooth, even finish.

“Bridal henna has been significant for centuries – and I have no doubt this will continue for years to come,” shares Pavan. “Its adornment signifies coming of age and the colour represents happiness, prosperity and good luck. The darker the henna, the more beauty associated with it – and urban myths are connected to henna’s colour, such as the intensity of the love from a husband or mother-in-law.” Pavan explains how bridal henna can make a great add-on to your treatment menu. “Not only is it important for brides, but also their bridesmaids and wedding guests. Guests don’t usually wear it as heavy, making henna a perfect treatment addition for a nail pro that doesn’t want to create intricate designs. For example, charge £25 for a 15 to 20-minute service. Nail styles and henna designs are a perfect marriage; nail pros will already have a steady hand, so henna is the perfect skill to enhance their creativity.” Pavan adds that it is an easy service to market: “All the work is in the application, as people love to look at beautiful things and henna is so beautiful! As soon as one person sees it, I am sure you’ll have a queue for henna appointments soon after,” she smiles.

IMPOSTOR SYNDROME: WHAT IS IT AND DO YOU HAVE IT?

H

owdy, nail bosses! Have you ever felt that you don’t deserve your success? That you’ll be ‘found out’ at any moment and revealed to be a fraud? You might want to grab your fake moustache, badly-fitting wig and trench coat for this one… Enter: ‘Impostor Syndrome’. Maybe you’ve felt like a fraud for entering a competition when you’ve only been doing nails for a year, when you’ve been in a training room with other techs, or when you have shown your lovely face on social media. But what is an impostor? The Cambridge Dictionary describes it as ‘a person who pretends to be someone else in order to deceive others’. Are you pretending to be a nail tech? That’s a bit of a weird flex – and a Netflix special waiting to happen. It’s also a big commitment to be reading Scratch, when you’re really three racoons in a trenchcoat, you impostor, you! Are you trying to deceive others? Hmm… how does one deceive people as a nail tech – besides the odd fib to clients about how much you love creating heart nails in February, even though you’re painting the thirtieth set that week? No, I don’t think you are an impostor, after all. But what causes the feeling in the first place? For me, there are two main culprits.

1

Social media

We tend to follow other people who do what we do, as this helps inspire us creatively. But the downside to this is that it’s easy to get a huge dollop of ‘comparison-itis’: constantly holding your work up against theirs, comparing your follower counts and engagement, and feeling deflated when they seem to be living the dream life, while yours feels lacking.

But remember, your business is built on your clients. YOUR clients. Usually ones who live within 10 miles or so. So that Insta-famous nail tech who lives five hours away, isn’t your competition at all. Your clients aren’t comparing you and them; they’re comparing you and the other nail techs in your town or city. Do those other techs do hand-painted nail art? Do they offer veganfriendly options? Do they provide free parking? Do they have an online booking system so clients can book at their convenience? Those are just some of the many things that may be important and valuable to YOUR client. Learn what these are, offer them and talk about them! This will set you apart from your competition, elevate your value in the minds of your clients, and get bums on seats. And guess what all of that does? Banishes the inner impostor.

2

Society

Many of us have grown up in a society that has praised us for being placid and agreeable people-pleasers. Maybe you were praised for an achievement, or had parents who were perfectionists or highly critical. No wonder you’re giving yourself a hard time and feeling out of place! A method that I use (and yes, this is something I feel from time to time) is to collate a folder of evidence. Every time you receive a nice review, a lovely text from a client, an award nomination or similar, grab a screenshot and add it to a folder on your phone. When you’re hit by Impostor Syndrome, look through this folder and remind yourself how great you are, and how much you deserve every bit of success you get, because you really do. It’s time to bin the fake moustache!

Joining the Scratch Stars Awards and Nailympia in Scratch’s competition portfolio, The World’s Star Nail Artist is an online contest, so you can participate for free from any country via your computer, tablet or mobile phone, and from the comfort of your nail desk. “Scratch is excited to further recognise incredible talent in the nail industry through The World’s Star Nail Artist contest,” comments Scratch’s managing editor, Helena Biggs. “The online entry and competing process means that we can widen our net further than ever, presenting an opportunity for nail artists worldwide to be recognised for their skill and creativity.

WHO CAN ENTER? Nail artists working anywhere in the world who attained a recognised nail qualification on or before 1 February 2022.

“Benefits include cash and product prizes, international acclaim and, importantly, the chance to challenge yourself with designs and explore new techniques with products. I am excited to see the designs that unfold from each challenge, to identify exceptional nail artists and unite pros worldwide through creativity.”

How it works

Following initial entry and the announcement of shortlisted nail artists, a preliminary task will whittle down entrants, who will then be tasked with a nail art challenge every fortnight. Eliminations will take place after each challenge, but those knocked out of the competition have the chance to re-join via a wildcard challenge. Sound exciting? It gets better… At the end of a the 10-week challenge period, a final three will remain, who will be invited to London for one last artistic task. They’ll receive tickets to the Scratch Stars Party on Sunday 23 July, and will each bag a cash prize of £1000s – with the winner scooping a trophy, a cover and column in Scratch, the title of The World’s Star Nail Artist 2023 and so much more!

PROTEIN

r e w o P s

eventy percent of Scratch readers surveyed welcome 10-20 clients a week to their nail desk, and each will have a different request for their finished mani, and a different natural nail condition. You may be presented with nails that break easily, are thin, peeling or damaged, or that simply need maintaining, and it’s important to choose products to alleviate or support such conditions for the health of the nail and longevity of applied coatings.

Step forward Protein Formula For Nails, a prescriptive nailcare brand that offers four effective brush-on products, packed with protein to support strong, healthy nails in as little as four weeks. The products are recommended to be used regularly as a base coat, and have been tested for 12 months in leading salons across the UK.

Why protein? “Proteins are made up of many building blocks, known as amino acids,” comments a spokesperson from Protein Formula For Nails. “The body needs dietary protein to supply amino acids for the growth and maintenance of cells and tissues. “Proteins and amino acids are essential for healing and repairing damaged tissue, including that of hair, skin and nails. They also increase cell turnover, which is the sloughing off of old skin/hair/nail cells to make room for new cells.” 68 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Are your clients’ natural nails seeking some TLC? Explore the results-driven treatment formulas that are powered by protein to support various nail needs

It also moisturises and increases the water content in the nail. Panthenol – pulls moisture into the nail plate to aid flexibility and growth. Hexanal – promotes the growth of strong, healthy nails, increases flexibility and helps the natural nail to heal. REBECCA HITCHON gets the scoop on high-tech launches, decodes hot topics & sources tech-savvy tips for your business

The metaverse & its role in beauty ‘Metaverse’ is a word that we’ve been hearing a lot recently, yet ask the average person to define it and they’ll likely struggle. A survey conducted last year by technology and marketing company, DEPT, found that only 16% of people aged between 18 and 60 in the US understand the term. ‘Metaverse’ was coined by American science-fiction writer, Neal Stephenson, in his 1992 book, Snow Crash, about a dystopian world where people escape into an alternate reality. Put simply, the metaverse is a shared, online, virtual environment. While Stephenson’s concept might have seemed futuristic then, it is increasingly becoming reality today – or virtual reality, owing to not just the gaming and entertainment sectors, but the beauty industry. From the way products can be learned about, tested and bought, to how brands and consumers communicate, the metaverse is here to stay. So, let’s explore some of its applications in the beauty sector...

Physical retail concepts have been diminishing in popularity for some time, due to the range of choice online and ease for shopping. While there are arguments for traditional shopping being the only way for consumers to try products before they buy, the metaverse is solving this pain point with virtual try-on features.

Instagram.com/lauramercier

Similarly, the environmental impact of running brick-and-mortar stores is diminished with metaverse shopping, as there is no need to power displays, consumers don’t need to travel, and product is manufactured based on visual merchandising rather than demand. Cosmetics brand, Laura Mercier, and skincare company, Dr. Barbara Sturm, each opened virtual stores in December last year. These offer interactive shopping experiences, with Mercier’s store, World of Beauty, taking users through three rooms. The first focuses on the brand’s signature ‘Flawless Face’ technique, guiding through the steps needed to achieve it and giving users access to a virtual shade finder. The second showcases curated product selections with a direct shortcut to purchase, while the last features a 3D collection unboxing.

Dr. Barbara Sturm’s spa-like virtual store features four rooms: a main hall, anti-ageing lab, next-gen microbiotic room and antiinflammatory area. Through the online experience, consumers can directly purchase products, learn about exclusive content and innovations from the brand, and even personalise the virtual space to suit their needs in order to receive personalised advice. Meanwhile, other beauty brands are launching products through the metaverse, such as NYX Professional Makeup, which unveiled its spring 2023 collection through a virtual experience in open world platform, Roblox. Named ‘House of NYX Professional Makeup’, the experience allows consumers to explore the collection and collect three limited-edition make-up looks for their in-game avatars. Early last year, cosmetics brand, Lottie London, adopted a similar concept, previewing its press-on nail collaboration with celebrity nail artist, Chaun Legend, in a venue in virtual world, Decentraland.

Online identities

NEWS BYTE

Last summer, cosmetics company, Clinique, launched a non-fungible token (NFT) make-up collection as part of campaign, #MetaverseLikeUs, aiming to inspire a more inclusive metaverse and spotlight underrepresented identities in the space. Featured on a collection of diverse female and non-binary avatars, the make-up looks were based on Clinique styles from three artists and could be purchased on the Clinique website, as well as used on consumers’ virtual reality avatars. More recently, make-up brand, Charlotte Tilbury, became the first company to offer a branded avatar function in its metaverse shop. In partnership with virtual store platform, Obsess, the technology allows consumers to personalise their avatar’s skin tone, facial features, make-up, body shape and clothing, as well as visit the shop in real-time with their friends’ avatars and interact with them, to create an online experience that is more like shopping in real life. However, avatars aren’t just important for consumers, as shown by personal care brand, Dermalogica, for example. In June last year, it launched ‘Natalia’, a digital human powered by the same technology used in the metaverse, to help teach professional skin therapists about skin science. Accessible through online videos and virtual reality simulations, Natalia accurately simulates skin conditions such as ageing, dehydration and sensitivity, as well as aesthetic treatment techniques.

L’Oréal has unveiled two technology prototypes: HAPTA, a computerised makeup applicator to meet the needs of the estimated 50 million people globally living with limited fine motor skills, and L’Oréal Brow Magic, an at-home electronic eyebrow make-up applicator. HAPTA’s levelling device is set to be piloted with L’Oréal-owned brand, Lancôme, this year – first using a lipstick applicator, before trialling other makeup applications. The smart hand-held device with customisable attachments is designed to give users confidence to precisely apply make-up and open difficult-to-open packaging, through an improved range of motion. Instagram.com/charlottetilbury

Instagram.com/clinique

With virtual spaces comes virtual people, or avatars, to create brand experiences and allow consumers to get involved. I must admit, this is an area I was pessimistic about before writing, because traditional virtual environments, such as in gaming, have showcased many unrealistic beauty standards. However, as the metaverse plays a more active role in the beauty industry, I’m pleased to see that standards are becoming more inclusive.

Expected to launch this year, L’Oréal Brow Magic allows beauty fanatics to apply a personalised eyebrow look at home, with AR technology first scanning the user’s face, before the desired brow shape, thickness and effect is selected. Once L’Oréal Brow Magic Primer is brushed through the eyebrows, the device’s printer should be moved across the eyebrows in a single, sweeping motion and a top coat applied to set the look.

Award-winning mobile nailist, CLARE WOODCOCK, shares top tips for making a success out of working on the move…

ABOUT CLARE WOODCOCK

Clare Woodcock is founder of The Nail Club, a mobile beauty business based in Sunbury upon Thames, Surrey. She began her nail industry journey in 2017, following 20 years in the music and entertainment sector as a senior PR manager and event producer. Clare trained with Gelish and has since expanded her nail and beauty knowledge with Bio Sculpture, Nouveau Lashes and HD Brows. Y

How to raise your profile

ou’ve got your business up and running, you have a handful of loyal clients and you feel confident in your work. Now, you just need to put yourself out there. But how?

Over the last few years, I have noticed an increase in the number of nail businesses that have opened. Thankfully, with the rise of nail content on TikTok and Instagram, the demand for techs has also grown, but with more competition, it is imperative to stand out from the crowd. There are a number of reasons why you may want to raise your profile. You might want to become a social media influencer or nail brand ambassador, or you might simply want a full diary. Either way, you have to put yourself out there. If you’re new to nails or working on a mobile basis, start with your local community, as that is where your core clients will come from. The most effective way to build your client base, and subsequently your profile, is through recommendations. Let’s face it: when you book a beauty treatment, you are more likely to choose what has been recommended – and this is what your clients will do. Consider setting up a website, as this allows potential clients to see who you are, the work you produce, and what other clients say about you.

People buy people

Let potential clients know who you are and what you offer via the following platforms: • Your website. Even if you have a one-page site with a photo of yourself, details of your experience and qualifications, values and pictures of your work, you are speaking to anyone who is interested in you. • Social media. Remember to populate this with posts about you, as well as your work. Admittedly, I am still building up the courage to post more face-to-camera content, but it is a valuable way to raise your profile. As a mobile nailist, it’s challenging to film nail work, as I can’t always carry a camera 72 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

tripod or lighting for filming, therefore it’s important to be creative in other ways. • Local press. Do you have a story to tell? The local press loves a feel-good community story, so think of ways to connect for a feature about you.

Enter competitions & awards

If you can write ‘award-winning’ in your title and on your social platforms and website, your business has an instant edge. Competitions are great for raising your profile and improving your skills. There are international competitions like Nailympia and The World’s Star Nail Artist, and challenges at trade events, such as the FNP nail competitions at Professional Beauty. Awards are brilliant for business, too. Obviously, the best (and only) awards for the UK&I nail industry is the Scratch Stars Awards, but it is also likely that there are local business awards you can enter. Every competition offers an opportunity for you to take a closer look at your business and identify areas for improvement. However, if you are required to pay a fee just to enter, you might want to investigate the competition’s legitimacy. Even if you don’t rank in a competition, do not be disheartened. We level up when we improve on what we have already built. If you become a finalist, promote this to your clients to raise your profile and showcase your success. And if you win, you could be writing a column in this magazine next year! With the Scratch Stars Awards 2023 open for entry, I’m going to see what I can improve upon so I can retain my title. Fingers crossed I’ll see you at the Scratch Stars Party in London on Sunday 23 July! Until next month,

Clare

Indigo Pearl Beauty

Location: Southend-on-Sea

Having worked as a mobile beauty therapist for seven years, Victoria Marston dreamed of creating a permanent setup at home. In 2020, she and her family moved to a new area, buying a house in Southend-on-Sea that boasted a large garden. This space afforded room for an ample salon environment, and as the timing of the move meant that Victoria had to rebuild her business post-Covid in an unfamiliar town, she decided to rebrand. Indigo Pearl Beauty opened in April 2022. “Indigo and Pearl are the names of my cats, and ‘Indigo Pearl Beauty’ represents my business as an holistic and beauty hybrid,” Victoria shares. She offers a range of natural nail services, as well as gel polish enhancements, builder gel, spa mani/pedis and IBX. “Some clients from my former area make the 80-mile round trip to have their nails done by me,” Victoria beams. “My clients tend to be mature ladies who have gone through, or are going through, some big life changes. Others have grown-up children and enjoy self-care, yet can feel intimidated by high street salon setups. These clients often need guidance or help to make the best of themselves in a one-on-one setting.” The décor at Indigo Pearl Beauty is reflective of the salon’s name, with hues of blush pink and deep indigo blue. “The pale pink is calming and welcoming, while the blue represents individuality and is bold and quirky. The furniture I have chosen is reminiscent of a vintage boudoir,” Victoria shares. “The furniture has been upcycled, and I have sought to create a sanctuary for my clients that also reflects my personality. My favourite part of the salon is my gel polish wall. It’s so happy and bright, so I call it the rainbow wall!” www.indigopearlbeauty.co.uk

Meraki

Location: Bulkington, Warwickshire

Gemma Hill qualified as a nail technician in 2016, engaging in extensive training with CJP Nail Systems, alongside one-to-one sessions with other nail technicians. Initially working in a salon that closed following lockdown, Gemma opened her own premises, Meraki, in October 2020. “It’s the scariest decision I’ve ever made, as the world was so unpredictable at the time, but since opening the salon, I’ve completed teacher training, written courses, and begun to offer courses,” Gemma beams. “My team has expanded to five employees; three nail technicians – myself, Paige and Niki, hairstylist, Emma, and beautician, Megan. “At Meraki, we offer L&P acrylic, builder gel and gel polish services for nails. Our most popular treatment is L&P enhancements, which is my favourite service to offer. We have spent two years building a salon in which everyone feels welcome. Meraki is a safe place, and our clients know that we are here for their highs and lows. One of our clients refers to us as ‘the best tonic’ and I think that sums us up perfectly. The team is proud to create a comforting atmosphere.” Gemma chose a blush pink hue as the key shade within the salon. “I added some floral accessories and wall prints to add contrast,” she reveals. “I think the décor attracts new clients, as many who walk past stop to look at the salon and pop in to enquire about services. My favourite part about Meraki is my supportive team members, who have supported the growth of my business.” /merakibulkington 78 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Multi award-winning nail pro, ELENA POPOVA, showcases how she creates a competitionfriendly French using L&P acrylic ABOUT ELENA POPOVA

Nail stylist, Elena Popova, has been lighting up the nail industry for 23 years, scooping multiple competition titles for her talents. She participated in the Guinness World Records competition for the fastest sculpted L&P acrylic nail, creating a French manicure on 10 nails in nine minutes, 39 seconds.

Elena’s creative concepts and nail work appeared on the front cover of the November 2022 edition of Scratch magazine, and she currently divides her time between running her salon and academy, Nail Future Pro, and educating and coaching her students for international championships. Her Nail Future Pro competition team has scooped over 1,500 medals worldwide and she travels across Europe to teach nail courses.

STAGE 1: PREPARATION

Prep the natural nails for L&P application and use pencil to mark the nail to identify the highest points of the smile line. Mark from the centre of the nail vertically down to the tip, then horizontally across from the ends of the smile line. File the free edge so that the shape of the nail is symmetrical either side of the central axis. The corners of the natural nail should be clean and dust-free.

STAGE 3: PERFECTING THE PINK STAGE 2: FORM APPLICATION

Competition nails tend to require either a straight or curved longitudinal arch. Adjust the form accordingly depending on the requirements. It should be set higher for a straight arch, and lower for a curved arch.

Dehydrate the nail plate and apply primer in a thin layer. Depending on the size of the nail enhancement, create the camouflage layer using one or two beads of your chosen pink shade. Create a smooth smile line using your brush to shape, ensuring the nail stays at a 90-degree angle.

The form should fit snugly under the natural nail and be narrower than the width of the natural nail, by the thickness of the future L&P product layer. The central line of the form should be a continuation of the central axis of the nail.

STAGE 4: PERFECTING THE WHITE

Place the white bead of product near the centre of the smile line. Work on the right and left sides in turn, spreading the white L&P product along the smile line and down the extension until the required length is achieved. Ensure the end shape is rectangular, with a straight free edge and sidewalls.

STAGE 5: FINISH FILING

Refine the enhancement by filing; straight at the tip and down the sidewalls, removing any excess volume. File across the surface of the enhancement using short, continuous movements. Buff and shine the surface of the nail to finish.

How to accommodate deaf clients in the nail space

Award-winning nail tech, KATIE BARNES, explores how the nail sector can better accommodate clients that are deaf or hard of hearing Katie Barnes

When it comes to hearing loss, not everyone has the same experience. There are various levels within the deaf community and, when treating a client who is hard of hearing, it is important to ascertain such levels in order to provide a comfortable, considered salon experience. The levels are usually described as mild, moderate, severe and profound. Those who experience mild and sometimes moderate hearing loss can often hear, but may need amplification such as hearing aids or a cochlear implant. However, clients with severe and profound hearing loss may not have any speech or hearing at all and will need other types of support, as hearing aids and cochlear implants are not useful for them. It is in these situations that British Sign Language (BSL) is required to communicate, as well as lip reading and gestures. Here’s how to make your nail space more inclusive to the deaf community…

82 SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK

“The deaf community is very visual and tends to notice more than hearing people.”

INDUSTRYINCLUSIVITY

Nail pros Charlene recommends using a notepad and pen or texting to communicate with a deaf client, as this can prevent feelings of alienation during a service. It can be helpful to have pre-made cards or text to inform them of the treatment process along with instructions for when you may wish for them to do something. For example, ‘when I tap your hand, place it in the lamp until the light turns off’.

Educators

Nail tech & educator, Charlene Henningham, is mum to Amani, who has been deaf since birth. Her belief is that directly advertising nail courses to the deaf and hard of hearing community will make them more accessible. “The deaf community is very visual and tends to notice more than hearing people,” Charlene Henningham advises Charlene. “Therefore, having eye-catching, bold imagery can be appealing to the deaf community.” Charlene also suggests having access to interpreters for deaf students so they can learn effectively. “While some educators may know basic BSL, it’s often not enough. Promote small groups or one-to-one classes with an interpreter so the student can ask questions comfortably. It is also beneficial to film classes so the student can watch them back.”

These instructions can be sent before the appointment in order to calm any nerves. If any changes occur during the service, take the time to explain them, because it can be nerve-racking for the client to wonder whether you are talking to them or someone else. Plenty of written communication is key, so booking additional time to ensure this can be beneficial. Reduce any background noise for those that are hard of hearing and make sure you are not seated with your back to the light (like a window) as this makes it harder for someone to lip read and read facial expressions. As nail techs need to look down for most of the service, it is important to explain this to the client prior to the start of the appointment. Also, ensure you explain any expected sensations, feelings or procedures in full before starting, so there is no element of surprise. If your client wears hearing aids, sounds may be louder to them so it is important to discuss any loud noises that may occur during the service.

In a classroom environment, talking slowly and clearly is important as some deaf and hard of hearing students can lip read if the lip pattern is clear. Try not to touch your face or have hair obstructing your face, as your expressions will help students to understand what you are saying. As well as the learning itself, basic safety elements should be considered, such as fire exits having a flashing light to signal an emergency. “Plans need to be put in place before the student steps foot into the classroom,” adds Lecenté educator, Dominique Sharpe. “Educators need to be in contact with their students prior to Dominique Sharpe the course commencing to find out if any additional support is needed, so that the student gets the full benefits from their learning. “Secondly, the acoustics of the classroom should be checked, and sitting the student close to the front will be helpful. Providing the course information in a hard copy or electronic format with subtitles for audio presentations will make the course more accessible. “Online education can be more accessible to hard of hearing students, as modules can be worked through at their own pace. It is essential to ensure that subtitles and captions are used in all video modules. If using YouTube as the hosting platform, you can add these to your videos with ease for the learner to turn on if they wish.”

Nail brands

As a business, it is important to offer varied communication methods such as email, web chat, WhatsApp or SMS for the deaf community so you can discuss questions or concerns with ease. If you offer tutorials, how-to guides and video reviews on your website or social media, add subtitles and closed captions. >> SCRATCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK 83

INDUSTRYINCLUSIVITY

Social media When posting videos on social media such as reels, tutorials or stories, always use subtitles and closed captions. Not only does this make these videos inclusive to the deaf community, but 80% of users watch videos without audio, so it clearly explains to all watchers what is happening in the video without the need for sound. When using Instagram and adding captions and text, focus on the middle square. The area around this central square is often covered by other elements from the platform so can subsequently make the caption difficult to read. To make your social media channels more inclusive, Charlene recommends learning the basics of BSL and recording a video using sign language, or explaining you cater to the deaf community by using subtitles or closed captions. Pin this to the top of your page. She also recommends using the hashtag #deafpride to help hard of hearing people identify salons accessible to them.

GREEN WAYS to spruce up your salon

Explore how to nail sustainable salon design, as REBECCA HITCHON sources tips, tricks & product picks for your setup Whether you’re opening a premises or the time has come to update and revamp your surroundings, decorating and furnishing a nail space can be a daunting task. As well as being a costly expenditure to get right for you, your team members and clients, it can also take its toll on the planet if your choices are not considered. From how you power the space to its aesthetic finishing touches, there are ways to be green – following the 3 Rs of sustainable living: reduce, reuse, recycle.

REDUCE

As we tackle a cost-of-living crisis, energy-saving ideas that may not have been previously considered are becoming increasingly important. Interior design is one of those aspects that can reduce the energy use of your business, as well as decrease pollution and conserve natural resources.

Jess Rigg

“Incorporating insulation and renewable energy sources, like solar panels, heat pumps and grey water recyclers for appliance wastewater, are great ways to reduce energy use – and what you do use will be from more sustainable sources,” explains Jess Rigg, project manager at Green Salon Collective, the authority on hair & beauty salon sustainability. “Lighting your salon with LED lights is beneficial, whether through a simple bulb switch or funky strip lights of various colours. You can also install motion sensor lighting and tap flow controllers, to ensure that only required amounts of energy are used.”

Majestic Towels Disposable Pedicure/Manicure Towels (100 pc) £12.60 + VAT www.majestictowels.co.uk

“While manicure/pedicure towels are essential for nail technicians, the type used can make a huge difference to both the aesthetics and energy usage of a salon,” adds Abbas Vawda, managing director of Majestic Towels Ltd. “Lightweight, disposable towels can be stored in compact spaces, with modern manufacturing Abbas Vawda techniques making many biodegradable and recyclable,” he says, stressing that it is important to check this with suppliers. “Most importantly, as a disposable option, there are zero laundering and resulting energy costs.” He notes that the same is true for wipeable rather than fabric-covered hand cushions for manicures.

One area to also consider in terms of reduction is paper. Consider how you can cut back on its use in the salon for design purposes, such as consultation forms or marketing materials. Can you opt for digital options? Audrey Krako of eco-friendly nail business, Manikur Brighton, advises that if you feel print materials are necessary, source them from a printing business that uses sustainable inks and papers, making sure it is local to you to reduce carbon emissions. REUSE

Being environmentally conscious in your design process doesn’t have to mean being untrendy – in fact, buying secondhand and upcycling has never been so fashionable. “Buying secondhand furniture can be so rewarding, as you can stumble across feature pieces for your space and it’s also cost effective,” shares Audrey Krako, who reveals that when sprucing up her nail studio, she sourced a preloved chair for clients. “It’s worth investing in good quality furniture that will last and can be refurbished if needed,” she advises. The nail tech adds that if not buying secondhand, shopping for accessories made from sustainable materials is beneficial. “For example, cotton pad holders made from recycled wood, biodegradable bin bags and couch rolls produced from recycled paper are easy ways to make your salon more planetfriendly. I’m also exploring the idea of ditching plastic nail colour swatches for wooden ones.” Jess Rigg agrees, adding: “If you are unable to use reclaimed materials in your salon, aim for sustainably sourced ones, such as FSC certified wood, cork or recycled plastic.”

TECH TALK Caoimhe Naunton of Somerset-based nail business, NU:A, reveals how she used sustainable methods to design her salon space... “My studio building was bought secondhand locally, and was repaired and rebuilt by my husband and father- in-law,” shares Caoimhe. “The furniture and soft Caoimhe Naunton furnishings are either secondhand, repurposed or vintage. I also hand-made some furnishings myself, meaning that the only items I have bought brand new are my lamp, saddle stool and manicure trolley.” The manicurist tells Scratch that Facebook Marketplace and eBay are great platforms to use to find secondhand furniture to upcycle. “Another interiors trick is to ‘shop your home’,” she adds. “Have a look around your house – are there items that you no longer need and could reuse in your salon? For example, a picture, some cushions or a potted plant. “At this crucial time in the ongoing struggle against climate change, every difference we can make matters,” continues Caoimhe. “A shift in mindset from ‘out with the old, in with the new’ is vital if we are to encourage a ‘repair, reuse, recycle’ ethos in this industry and beyond.”

RECYCLE You may be surprised at the recycled products available to you when decorating your nail space. For example, Jess Riggs reveals that recycled paints that have been re-mixed are easy to source, as are non-toxic paints that are phosphate-free and low in volatile organic compounds (VOC), which are harmful to the environment.

Brand spotlight Scratch learns about Relic Plastic, a Morecambe-based manufacturer of 100% recycled plastic products that could benefit your salon aesthetic and retail offerings... “At Relic Plastic, we do our best to divert plastic that isn’t recycled locally: plastic that would otherwise end up in landfill or incinerated,” reveals Kiki Callihan, co-director at the brand. “We’ve brought the entire recycling process under one roof: collecting, sorting, shredding, mixing, melting and injecting a material that would have no value once Kiki Callihan thrown in the kerbside bin. The result is a range of unique products that are visually stunning, environmentally positive, and that provide fair wages to our small team. “We work with local individuals to collect post-consumer plastic, like bottle tops and DVD cases, and businesses to take plastic that they would otherwise throw in the skip, in an effort to give it a longer life,” continues Kiki. Paws for

thought Nail pros share the positive aspects of allowing pets into their salon space & points to note before doing the same REBECCA HITCHON REPORTS The UK is a nation of pet lovers: more than half of households owned at least one pet in 2021/2022, according to data company, Statista. While not everyone shares this same appreciation for furry friends – especially in the nail space, tapping into this large demographic can help reap huge rewards for your business. For those who worry about leaving pets on their own, or simply love having them by their side, making your nail business pet-friendly can help you to reach clients that may not have visited previously. This not only provides a point of difference for your brand, but heart-warming imagery for marketing materials. Plus, in an environment where self-care is the focus, the presence of pets has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety and boost self-confidence. That being said, it is important to gauge whether allowing pets into your nail salon will sit well with the majority of employees and clients. Note that whatever your stance on pets in the salon, assistance animals should be welcomed into the space. In a poll on Scratch’s Instagram story, 59% of you said that you do not think pets should be allowed in nail salons. The main reasons stated were hygiene, allergies to pets, phobias of animals, misbehaving or distracting pets, and the safety and wellbeing of the animals. Knowing your team and client base and their attitudes towards animals is crucial when evaluating whether pets in the salon would benefit your business – or be a source of stress and a potential reason for staff and clients to leave. Scratch shares viewpoints from owners of nail businesses that have decided to allow pets into their spaces. Here, they share their reasoning, the benefits, and rules they’ve put in place to ensure this works for their brand, clients and the animals.

Loretta Walker of The Nail & Beauty Lounge, Stourbridge “My dog, Tyson, has no eyes due to an eye disease. It created a challenge when my husband had to go on site visits for work and needed to leave him on his own in the house for a few hours,” shares Loretta Walker, OPI educator & owner of The Nail & Beauty Lounge, Stourbridge. “It was a huge decision to bring Tyson into the salon, as I wasn’t sure how he or clients would react. I did some test days with him when business was quiet and gave him his bed and a few toys, and he was very relaxed.” Although Loretta reveals that clients love Tyson just as much as he loves being there, she does notify them when he is in the salon and checks that those visiting that day are comfortable around dogs. “It’s great having a pet-friendly salon, but their presence must not cause disruption to clients or their treatments.” she notes. “If you have a pet in the salon, you must clean and sanitise more regularly than usual, and allow adequate time in your day to walk your pet and allow for toilet breaks.” Since bringing Tyson into the salon, Loretta now has clients that bring their own dogs to appointments. When deciding on whether this will work, the nail tech asks about the dog’s size, if they are well-behaved and requests for a bed, blanket, toys and treats to be brought in so the pet settles and is quiet.

“It’s great having a pet-friendly salon, but their presence must not cause disruption to clients or their treatments.”

Heather Errington of Nails By Heather, Teesside Olive, a French bulldog owned by The GelBottle Inc brand ambassador & owner of Nails By Heather, Heather Errington, comes to the salon with her every day. “I’m sure that’s why many of my clients visit: for Olive,” she laughs. “Personally, I believe that having pets in the salon helps create a friendly, calming and loving environment. But nail pros should be particularly aware that nothing can be left lying around. Our four-legged friends need a safe, clean space where dangerous items can’t be chewed or eaten.”

“As a dog lover, I am more than happy to allow a well-behaved dog into my salon, as I know that petting an animal is like giving a human a hug; it relieves stress, lowers anxiety and the sense of unconditional love is good for the soul,” comments Michelle Clancy, Lecenté educator & owner of Michelle Clancy Nail Artist. “However, I don’t advertise or encourage clients to bring their pets to appointments, because they can be distracting and may feel overwhelmed in an environment that they’re unfamiliar with. If a client is confident that they can control their pet and it will settle quickly, I’m happy to try an appointment with their pet in tow.” Michelle’s own well-behaved labrador usually meets and greets clients, but the nail tech knows not everyone is an animal fan. “I make sure that any new clients know on booking that I have a dog who they’d be likely to meet,” she shares. “I ask whether they’re comfortable with that and ensure they know I’m not offended if they’d prefer to visit an animal-free environment. The client must be your priority and feel comfortable the moment they step through the salon door.” Similarly, Michelle stresses that it is fine to not allow a client’s pet into the salon, as it is your business and you set the rules. But if you do, she recommends sweeping and mopping the floor well, opening windows for ventilation and cleaning all surfaces down once the animal has left.

Ruth Munro of Little Blank Spaces, Inverness Magpie Beauty educator & owner of Little Blank Spaces, Ruth Munro, brought her puppy, Stella, into the salon with her every day for the first four months of ownership. “It was a huge advantage for myself and my clients, as it meant they could keep their regular appointment times. Puppies need to be let out very frequently and by keeping Stella in the salon with me, I was able to take her out between appointments, meaning I didn’t disrupt clients’ treatment times.” Although the nail tech used to bring her own pet into the salon, she has a no pet policy for her clients. “You need to be aware at all times when there are animals in the salon, as they can very easily get into trouble without anyone noticing,” she explains. The nail tech adds that pets need to feel comfortable, safe and relaxed in a salon environment, but many become very territorial. “If your client was to bring their pet along and you already had a pet in the space, I would recommend that the animals meet in an open outdoor area beforehand,” she advises. By making clients aware of your pet situation prior to booking, preparations like this can be made, she notes.

Shian Paul of Shian Nails, Dalston

“My daschund pup, Pudding, comes to work with me almost every day and is known as the salon’s receptionist, doorbell and mascot,” shares Shian Paul, founder of Shian Nails. “I don’t have a formal pet policy in place, but I allow other dogs in the salon if they are wellbehaved, as Pudding enjoys canine company. I don’t mind other pets being off the lead so the dogs can play together, but if they get too overexcited, I will ask their owners to put them back on a lead and keep them close. “I think you should be very clear about what is acceptable behaviour from your clients’ pets when you allow them into the salon,” Shian continues. “You might have to have some difficult conversations about the animals being a little naughty or barking too much, but otherwise you can’t allow them back into your space.” The nail tech is conscious about Pudding’s comfort, particularly around clients who may wish to pet or cuddle her, and vice versa. “I ask each client if they are fine with Pudding jumping up on their lap, as she is particularly fond of snuggling down on clients’ laps during pedicures,” smiles Shian. Scheduling time for walks and toilet breaks for Pudding is also crucial, she adds.

Fran Bholah of The Nail Room, Southampton Fran Bholah owns four daschund dogs, and she often allows them into her home salon, The Nail Room, to elevate clients’ treatment experiences. “I don’t have a pet policy, as many of my clients will request for my dogs to be in the salon so they can cuddle them,” she comments. “The sausage dogs create a lovely, welcoming atmosphere and have a calming effect on clients. I joke that I need to check clients’ pockets on the way out, as many want to take them home!”

Instagram.com/fran_nailbar

Fran reveals that the dogs in the salon can be the highlight of clients’ appointments, but admits that she is careful to ensure this works for both the animals and clients. “I only allow my pets into the salon if the client is completely comfortable with dogs. I understand that four little sausage dogs in the space can be overwhelming. If a client does seem overwhelmed, the dogs will be taken out of the salon and sometimes brought in one at a time,” she says. “Similarly, I ensure the dogs are as comfortable as possible. I make it very clear that they must be respected – especially if they are sitting quietly on their beds in their ‘safe zone’.”

Katarzyna Kempa of Kasia Kate Nails, Coatbridge “I allow pets in my salon, as animals have a lot of positive energy, which makes my clients and I feel happy,” shares Katarzyna Kempa of Kasia Kate Nails. “I set rules for clients who wish to bring their pet to an appointment: the animal must be well-behaved, not make much noise and be clean and fragrant. I also advise owners to take their pets for a walk before visiting, so that the dogs do not get too excited or overwhelmed in the salon.”

Before allowing pets into your salon...

üDo you have enough space to accommodate clients and pets? ü Is your salon secure for pets, i.e. is there any way they could run away or be hurt by your tools, nail chemicals or plants, Learn which plants are which can be poisonous to pets? dangerous for pets by scanning here

üAre you ready to be strict about sanitisation? There are no laws against your business being pet-friendly, but it is imperative that you meet hygiene standards by cleaning the space as often as possible. Animals should be kept away from any food preparation areas, and you must ensure there is no risk of drink contamination. üHave you informed clients of the change directly? Make sure they are aware as soon as possible, so that they can prepare. Don’t rely on them to see a social media update – and the same applies for new clients.

üAre you prepared to tackle any problematic incidents that may occur, such as pets not getting on, a client or pet becoming frightened, or running over appointment times because of pets being distracting? Legally, it is the owner who is obliged to ensure their pet doesn’t cause problems, so it is important to make them aware that they are responsible for them at all times. Setting rules such as the pet being toilet trained, well-behaved, vaccinated, free from fleas and clean is important.

BABTAC on… pets in the salon

“The British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (BABTAC) provides professional and public liability insurance for therapists carrying out treatments,” shares Lesley Blair, CEO & chair of BABTAC. “We advise all therapists to conduct a thorough risk assessment before carrying out treatments, to consider any possible safety risks in the salon or treatment room. Pets could potentially be an issue in terms of hygiene and allergies in the salon, as well as a trip hazard. We recommend therapists check their specific policy wording.” www.babtac.com

Actress, Jennifer Coolidge, received a rapturous applause when she accepted the award for Best Supporting Actress in a TV/Limited Series at the 80th Golden Globes, for her role in The White Lotus. US manicurist, Vanessa Sanchez McCullough (@nailzbyvee) was behind Coolidge’s nail style for the event, and used CND Plexigel™, Future Forms and Shellac™ in Black Pool, followed by Duraforce™ Top Coat and SolarOil™. “Jennifer wore a black dress with a lot of shimmer, so I wanted to contrast the shimmer with a gold embellishment that didn’t compete with it,” reveals Vanessa. “The gold triangle was the perfect touch. The length of her nails and positioning of the triangle helped to elongate her hands.”

The internet was divided back in 2015 over the colour of a dress, and a similar debate has sparked about the colour of a nail shade. A nail client shared a snap from @shuga.studio’s Instagram on a Facebook group, and social media users were divided on whether the nails were a white or blue shade. Scratch ran a poll on its Insta story to settle the debate, with 57% of respondents answering that they saw the shade as blue, rather than white. What do you see?

Many people visualise dreams with the hope of making them a reality, and now manicures are being used to manifest goals. A number of clients have been choosing a nail hue depending on their hopes and wishes. Based on colour magic, here’s what each shade supposedly represents: Coral – passion and optimism. Red – creativity and power. Pink – romance and love. Purple – wisdom and independence. Blue – freedom and imagination. Black – protection and elegance. White – open mindedness and purity. Yellow – happiness and courage. Green – growth and rebirth. Orange – expression and joy. Grey – balance and peace. Gold – success and generosity. Silver – grace and glamour. Brown – security and reliability.
